Greetings Turbo Regal Inner Circle Members - 03-23-2011

MORE INFORMATION ABOUT DATE CODES -

In my opinion, there are three critical pieces of information that you need to make sure is present on the potential Turbo Regal you may be looking at to buy.

First in importance, is the metal VIN tag by the base of the windshield that has the 17-digit VIN number. The next order of importance would be the corresponding Trunk ID label, which also lists the matching 17-digit VIN number and lists all the features and options associated with the car. The next important "tag" would be the metal body trim plate, which is secured by two screws up by the top area of the cowl on the driver's side.

Another decal, would be one of the two paper decals on your driver's door jamb since the one lists the month and year of production of your car. I do not place the same high value on these as I do the three I mentioned above. In other words, if this decal was missing or not readable and everything else was correct, it would not hinder me from buying the car. It would not be a deal breaker. This is my opinion only.

Over the years, it is the two paper decals on the door jamb area that may either be gone or no longer readable due to a poor repaint or using the wrong solution to clean the door jamb area.

In an earlier issue under Information About Date Codes, we briefly touched on the fact the wheels carried a date code, which was stamped in the area of the rim where the bead hides it.

PHOTO 1 - This is an original 1987 T rim that we recently removed and sold from a 1987 Turbo-T. You can clearly see a date code that has been stamped in the rim area, "INSP. #2 FEB 06 1987."

As many of you know, we have been taking drivetrains down to Richard Clark's every 6 to 8 weeks once we have dismantled parts cars. With the current one loaded on our trailer, we can clearly show a few areas that contain critical codes of interest.

PHOTO 2 - This drivetrain happens to be from a 1987 Turbo engine and transmission. The top photo shows the small yellow metal tag on the transmission indicating it is the correct transmission for 1987, known by the 3-letter code "BR F." This metal tag is usually covered in oil from a rear main leak or oil filter adapter leak in neglected situations! This will be on the passenger's side, back by the tail shaft. Its attached by one single rivet and measures 2 inches wide by 1-1/2 inches tall. The lower photo shows a machine flat surface located on the driver's side where the transmission pan meets the actual housing, towards the back of the same transmission. On this machined surface GM stamped the portion of the VIN number. This would be the last six digits and may include the two-letter code prior to the last six digits. This is hardly readable on this example, highlighted with the red arrow. Some of you may not realize the transmission also had the matching VIN number to the car.

PHOTO 3 - Most of us realize the engine block is matched to the VIN number of your car. The sequence of the VIN number is the last six digits. In other words, the last six digits that directly follow the last letter code. These last six digits should match the last six digits of the 17-digit VIN number found on the dash.

Although it may not be readable in this photo, this stamped six-digit code is on a machined surface vertical to the ground on the driver's side where the bell housing bolts up to the engine block. Although it's hard to see, we have highlighted this code with the red arrow.

This machined area is about 3/4 inch wide by 3 inches long. It is virtually impossible to see unless the car is on a lift and you can shine a flashlight into that confined space.

Where this number probably means the most is for any GNX owner, to be sure to have the correct block in their car. Whenever I bought a GNX to resell, I used a pencil and paper to make a shading/tracing of the stamping. You might want to do this with your car. This gives you physical proof that the block matches to the VIN number on the car. Equally important on a GNX would be to make sure the VIN number also matches with the transmission. As many of you are aware, the GNX had different calibrations in the transmission.

PHOTO 4 - We show another page from our 1987 Parts Identification and Inspection Guide. In this case, it is showing the Delco Heater Blower Motor. A long stamped number appears on the top edge by one of the mounting bolts. The last digit is the year and the three prior digits are the day of the year. I was able to check the part on my car and it reads, "114 7" - this means the 114th day for 1987. This makes sense since our 1987 Turbo-T was produced in May of 1987. The 114th day would have fallen in April of that year.

NOTE ABOUT PHOTOS ON THE WEBSITE -

We have heard from a couple people that have viewed the photos on the website. Because these have to be low-resolution photos to work on the Inner Circle segments on the website, any photos of text don't appear clear when enlarged. This is a problem when you are trying to see numbers, such as those on the VIN labels or pages from Options booklet. Also, because of photo reproduction and computer screen variations, the colors may not be true to the actual product or photo.

If you would like to have us email you any photo at the higher resolution for viewing, just email us and we will email them to you. Be sure to be specific on which pictures you want to see - Reference Inner Circle date and photo number 1, 2, 3 or 4 - denniskirban@yahoo.com

The Buick Performance Group event will feature the Turbo Buick "step children" the T-Types and Pontiac's unclaimed child the Turbo Trans Am. The event is at National Trail Raceway in Hebron, Ohio.

They have secured Scott Kelly to attend, as well as Denny Manner, Joe Guzek, Dave Roland, Ron Yuile. Denny has also contacted Tom Wallace in hopes that he will attend. The people mentioned have also contacted other retired Buick Engineers, including Mike Doble to have them attend. There will be displays and "tech" talks, so it should be very informative. I don't think there has ever been that many Turbo G-body Engineers in one place at one time. This is one event you do not want to miss this summer!
