Greetings Turbo Regal Inner Circle Members - 05-18-2011
REPORT FROM THE 2011 TurboBuick.com NATIONALS -
What a great week!
Special thanks to Richard, Clint, and Shane, for all their work making it a great event. Also thanks to ZDDPlus™ for sponsoring this event.
Even with rain threatening part of the week, the turnout for the first 2 days at Richard's shop was great. First timers were in awe seeing so many Turbo Regal parts and test equipment in one location. You could count over 50 complete turbo engines on the shelves in the one building alone!
It is safe to say, outside of GM, the largest 1986-1987 Turbo Buick collection resides in Burlington, North Carolina.
Richard's dyno was going almost constantly, Richard was testing brake units, flushing injectors, and testing mass air flow sensors for several of those that brought them.
These cars not only have a distinction for being fast, but they also break a lot! Richard was at his shop every night well past midnight working on cars for people. That kind of devotion is hard to comprehend for some people, since he doesn't charge any one!
Between all the special invited guests, the amount of Turbo Buick knowledge in one place would be hard to surpass.
One of the surprised guests was Richard Lasseter of the GSCA from Georgia.
Ron Joseph was also present.
Lawrence Conley, who for many years was the top gun with his well-known Turbo Regal "Tweaked" racecar, was there every day. He gave a very interesting talk.
None of these 3 guests had ever been to Richard's shop before.
I am sure the TurboBuick.com forum will be posting many photos of the event and we will be sending our photos in to them as well to post as well.
We had over 20 raffle items that were given out at the luncheon, all donated by the various vendors. I kept the crowd amused during the luncheon by asking a lot of Turbo Buick trivia questions.
I don't know how Richard does it... staying late every night, then getting there every morning, sometimes before Clint, Shane and me!
Besides Jill, his faithful Jack Russell companion, three other stray dogs have now made the Richard Clark location their "home away from home." Richard keeps a stockpile of treats and dog food for them. Seems like no Turbo Buick owner is ever turned away, nor is any dog.
It seems the threat of rain may have put a dent in the attendance of racers for Friday and Saturday's program at Piedmont Dragway. Fortunately, the weather held out so the racers could run.
Several big guns were there, including Don Cruz out of Florida.
Cal Hartline was busy keeping many of the cars in tune. Cal was also one of the key speakers.
The 2011 TurboBuick.com Nationals was a great success. Richard, Shane, Clint and ZDDPlus™ have made this a nice event to attend.
I contacted Clint and he has confirmed that Don Cruz out of Florida had the fastest clocked times of 5.30 seconds at over 130 mph in the 1/8th mile Piedmont dragstrip. Congrats to Don and his crew!
Interesting side note - In reading Don Garlits' book, he was the very first to hit 200 mph with his top fuel dragster in the 1/8th mile! So, when you head off to work tomorrow, look at your odometer and mark off 1/8th mile and then picture accelerating to 130 mph or 200 mph in that short distance.
Pete Hoffman and myself got to Richard's shop Monday night so we could help Richard prepare for the event that started on Wednesday.
The photos this week show some of Richard's shop prior to the event.
PHOTO 1 - This top photo shows just a small portion of the various completed turbo engines in one of his buildings. Most of them belong to him, and some belong to customers. The lower photo shows two real GNXs in his collection. Richard has had the GNX on the top of the lift for a long time and it has less than 10 actual miles. The GNX on the floor (only portionally visible in this photo) belonged to the CEO of ASC. ASC, as many of you know, did the GNX conversions originally. This one does have the astroroof. This car was part of ASC auctions several years ago.
PHOTO 2 - Shows an extremely nice street rod pickup truck that Cal Hartline had arranged to tune and dyno for the owner while he was at Richard's. According to Cal, this person also owns another truck that the owner had chrome-plated the engine block! The top left photo shows the engine compartment and the top right photo is looking in the bed area of this truck. It has a plexiglass floor and you can see the rear end set up.
PHOTO 3 - Most of us may be lucky enough to have one decent size toolbox in their garage. But we were in toolbox heaven at Richard's. In the top photos you can see two 15'-20' long sections of multiple toolboxes in one of the buildings. Need a toolbox you can move around? The lower photo shows one on wheels, which is similar to what they use at racetracks. You could probably buy a nice original Grand National for what this rolling toolbox costs when it was empty!
PHOTO 4 - Prior to the event, Richard was breaking in a freshly rebuilt turbo engine, as seen in the top photo. The lower photo shows just a very small section of some of the floor-to-ceiling metal shelves arranged neatly with Grand National parts. Richard just doesn't just have duplicates of parts, but double digits and beyond of parts. I think Richard is closing in on having more Grand National parts than GM has for these cars, since very little is still available from GM.
MORE TO COME NEXT WEEK.

GREAT NEWS - FOR THIS WEEK'S BUICK EVENT AT NORWALK -
I just talked to Pete Serio, better known in the turbo world as the "window rattle guy." He plans to meet me at the car show this Saturday and will be there all day. He can answer any questions you may have related to the window problems. We look forward to seeing you there.
NOTE ABOUT PHOTOS ON THE WEBSITE -
We have heard from a couple people that have viewed the photos on the website. Because these have to be low-resolution photos to work on the Inner Circle segments on the website, any photos of text don't appear clear when enlarged. This is a problem when you are trying to see numbers, such as those on the VIN labels or pages from Options booklet. Also, because of photo reproduction and computer screen variations, the colors may not be true to the actual product or photo.
If you would like to have us email you any photo at the higher resolution for viewing, just email us and we will email them to you. Be sure to be specific on which pictures you want to see - Reference Inner Circle date and photo number 1, 2, 3 or 4 - email@example.com
ALWAYS IN A BUYING POSITION WORKS -
Got any turbo parts you are not using? Why not cash them in for parts you need with a Letter of Credit. Simply email me a list - firstname.lastname@example.org
Also, we are still buying dead or partially dead 1984-1987 Turbo Regals under $4,000 that are within 250 to 350 miles of our location.

2011 BUICK PERFORMANCE GROUP - JULY 29th - 31st, 2011 - HEBRON, OHIO -
The Buick Performance Group event will feature the Turbo Buick "step children" the T-Types and Pontiac's unclaimed child the Turbo Trans Am. The event is at National Trail Raceway in Hebron, Ohio.
They have secured Scott Kelly to attend, as well as Denny Manner, Joe Guzek, Dave Roland, Ron Yuile. Denny has also contacted Tom Wallace in hopes that he will attend. The people mentioned have also contacted other retired Buick Engineers, including Mike Doble to have them attend. There will be displays and "tech" talks, so it should be very informative. I don't think there has ever been that many Turbo G-body Engineers in one place at one time. This is one event you do not want to miss this summer!
Information for the Event can be found here -
