MORE BUICK ORIGINAL LITERATURE -

One of the least expensive manuals to find for any of the 1984 through 1987 Turbo Regals is the "Body By Fisher Service Manual." Fisher relates to the famous "coach" logo that appears on your door sills. Today Fisher has virtually been dropped from the entire GM line up as a visible logo.

What is nice about these manuals (which run about 1 inch thick) is they give great detail into anything related to the body of your car and how to fix it or adjust it. If it's body related, it's covered in this book. This even includes the door windows, T-Tops, astroroof, etc.

It's unusual, but we can still buy the 1987 Body Service Manual from the source that supplies GM today. Our Part #7196 the price is $31.95. This is not a reprint, but the original over 1" thick bound book. I'm sure at some point their supply will be depleted.

Here is a link to the Part #7196 GM Body Service Manual -
http://www.kirbanperformance.com/product/442/GM+Original+1987+General+Motors+BODY+SERVICE+MANUAL+for+Passenger+Cars+%237196.html

Each year GM did several Service Manuals.

Meaning not all the various GM models are covered in the one book. For example, the 1984 and 1985 Body Service Manuals, if you are seeking either of those years be sure it specifically lists the G body body-style on the front. The 1986 and 1987 does cover the G body, but only for the Buick-Oldsmobile-Cadillac models. I assume another one exists for the Chevrolet and Pontiac models since their logo is not on the cover of the 1986 or the 1987 Body By Fisher Service Manuals.

PHOTO 1 - The photo on the left shows a used 1986 General Motors Body Service Manual for passenger cars. You can see the logos for the three car lines on the cover. This is very similar to the 1987 Body Service Manual we currently sell. Actually, if you own a 1986, the specs would not be much different between the two years. The photo on the right shows one of the pages from the first section entitled, "General Information 1-17." Figure 39 shows 21 "Special Body Tools." "Figure 39 shows the special body tools that are recommended as aids in servicing the various body components. Equivalent tools may be substituted." I'm sure Richard Clark has the entire set. While some substitutions can be made, some of these tools are unique, such as number 20 "Door Hinge Wrench" and number 21 "Sun Roof Adjusting Tool." Number 16 "Head Restraint Removal Tool" is designed to slip down behind the headrest on the bucket seat, so you can remove the headrest. A flat metal ruler or similar tool can be used instead.

We will highlight more features that are covered in the Body Shop Manual in the weeks to come.

These manuals can be quite useful and usually can be bought rather cheap compared to other related manuals.

It's weird, but the small 1987 Regal original Owners Manual brings far more money than the Body Service Manual!

Recently Eileen came across some photos in her computer that I had taken at Molly's office in California in 2003.

PHOTO 2 - I took these photos of some of the pictures on the walls in at the Molly Designs studio in California in 2003, so the angle of the photos makes them slightly distorted. These are some of Molly's graphic designs on the actual tractor/trailers. Starting from the top: Chevrolet, Yamaha Factory Racing U.S. Team, Toyota Motorsports, and Mazda. These are just a few of his impressive design work.

PHOTO 3 - I took these photos at a local 41st Annual Cavalcade of Corvettes show. What makes this top photo unusual is that it shows an un-restored 1961 Corvette. This car is all original with a few period correct upgrades that today are worth a small fortune. The lower left photo shows one of Hurst wheels with the optional spinner, which is on this 1961 Corvette. What is unique about this is the fact I never found this application for the wheels on a Corvette in any of the Hurst catalogs. The lower right photo shows another reason the value of this car is quite high, even in this un-restored condition. The car is an original fuel injection car!

In talking to the owner, he bought the car when he saw it sitting at a gas station back in 1965. He has simply maintained it since then. The color is also one of the rarest colors on Corvette back in 1961.

I remember back around 1969-1970, I bought a 1957 Corvette with the hopes of restoring it. Back then I paid I think around $700 for the car.

Original cars are great to look at and research as they can be a tremendous aid for a restoration project. Also, as I am sure you have heard the saying, "a car can only be original once." While this car is far from show quality, it is remarkable that the owner has taken the least traveled route since buying it over 45 years ago, especially for such a desirable car.

I bring this up because I have been asked to judge the "Original Turbo Regal" class at the upcoming Buick Performance Group event at the end of this month in Ohio. Richard Clark will be assisting me as well. Richard probably has the equipment to test the air in the original tires to determine if the air is 1980s air! He is also working on a hand-held device that will measure the original new car smell in the original cars also. (I am kidding, but who knows for sure?)

We consider it an the honor to be asked to judge this event. Many of you realize we have the background and appreciation for these cars. In the past, Richard and I have offered our expertise at the GS Nationals when questions came up in that class.

Last week we showed a late 1940s Dodge with a wide array of toys and related period-correct items that were featured with the car at a show.

At another car show I spotted this Cadillac Hearse. This car owner has gone all out in making a complete display.

PHOTO 4 - The top and bottom left photos show the overall view from the front and side with his Cadillac Hearse display. They named it "Cadraculac." The front license late reads, "Don't wait for the hearse to take you to church." The top right photo shows a back view with a character that could serve as the "driver." The lower right photos are looking inside the Caddy Hearse with another display of model cars and autographed items.

I have a relative who is a funeral director, and I remember when I would see him at various family reunion events he was always solemn in nature. We also have a longtime friend who is a funeral director. When he was a teenager, he actually convinced his Dad to buy or rather tricked his Dad into getting a 1961 Chevrolet wagon with the 409 engine to use in the business. Naturally, it was black! Imagine how rare an original 409 station wagon would be restored today!

Speaking of funeral directors and hearses - you seldom, if ever, see an ad in a newspaper for hiring a funeral director. It's one of those rare jobs that usually get passed down from generation to generation. If you did see an ad, I would think it would read something like this:

"Wanted. Mature individual. Must have wide array of dark suits. Laughter is prohibited. Must be able to tolerate smells. Must be available any hour of the night or day. Must be able to handle huge doses of sadness on a daily basis."

A true one-owner car with all the paperwork and 100% original. Paint is all original but faded. Will need four tires, bumper fillers and a battery. Black T-Types are extremely rare. MOVIE AND CARS -

I read somewhere that in recent times the movies with a high focus on cars have done really well in the movie theatre. "The Fast and Furious" series and now "Cars 1" and "Cars 2" are just two recent examples.

Last week my granddaughter needed a ride to the movie theatre to see the movie "Super 8" with her girlfriends. I told her I wouldn't sit with them, so she would not be embarrassed.

That night at our local theatre they were having a write-in auction for the Cars 2 promotional vinyl banners that hung in their lobby. If you have seen them, you know these are very distinctive. They are full color, about 10 feet tall, and maybe 2-3 feet wide.

The only other time I did a write-in bid on an auction, I won. So, I was feeling lucky when I wrote down a figure that I was confident was going to be the highest. I also spoke to the assistant manager and told her I would also be interested in buying a second banner if I won the auction.

I did get a call at the end of the auction, and my bid was like twice as high as the next closest one. So, I told her to see if she could round up another one at the same price, fortunately she was able to get me one more. Now I will have three of them, I just can't get them until the movie is no longer playing in their main auditorium. Years from now, they could be quite valuable. If you have a tall enough wall, this is the perfect thing to hang in your garage or pole building. It's not likely your wife would let you hang it in your living room. I may sell one of them once I get them. I am told not every movie theatre got these banners, so they may be tough to find, let alone buy.

NOTE ABOUT PHOTOS ON THE WEBSITE -

We have heard from a couple people that have viewed the photos on the website. Because these have to be low-resolution photos to work on the Inner Circle segments on the website, any photos of text don't appear clear when enlarged. This is a problem when you are trying to see numbers, such as those on the VIN labels or pages from Options booklet. Also, because of photo reproduction and computer screen variations, the colors may not be true to the actual product or photo.

If you would like to have us email you any photo at the higher resolution for viewing, just email us and we will email them to you. Be sure to be specific on which pictures you want to see - Reference Inner Circle date and photo number 1, 2, 3 or 4 - denniskirban@yahoo.com.
