Greetings Turbo Regal Inner Circle Members - 09-07-2011

DATE CODED GM PARTS -

Earlier this spring, especially in the 2-16, 3-9, 3-16, 3-23, and 3-30 Inner Circle issues, we wrote about various parts on your Turbo Regal that were date coded when your car was built.

We recently purchased a pair of brand new in the GM box 1986-1987 Grand National wheels. Like many of the parts they are also date coded. Because the code is on the back of the rims, years of dirt and rust in most cases have probably made it impossible to read the date code.

PHOTO 1 - Show the front side of this brand new Grand National wheel. The second photo shows the backside with a close up of the actual date code. It appears the complete line reads, "51391 15 x 7 JJ MADE IN THE U.S.A. DOT-T MW-1 11 20 87 C LINE 1" The date designation is 11 20 87 for November 20, 1987. The 15 x 7, of course, is the size and the "JJ" code after that refers to the style wheel. Of course, the words "Made in the U.S.A." is nice to see. As for the other references, I have no idea what they mean.

According to my GM price book dated December 1, 1987 this Grand National wheel retailed for $264 each back in 1987. Unfortunately, in my March 1, 2001 GM Price Book, the part number no longer appears. So, I don't know what year the 1986-1987 Grand National wheel was no longer available from GM. I also do not know what the last retail price would have been on the 1986-1987 Grand National wheel. I do not have any GM Price books between the 1987 and 2001.

PHOTO 2 - Shows the new 2012 Collector Car Price Guide, available from Krause Publications. This is the only resource with pricing that goes back to 1901. It contains more than 250,000 accurate price listings for cars of all eras. It features the 1 to 6 condition grading placing values on all conditions from parts cars to show cars. The guide has over 750 pages. If you would like to order a copy, it's item #W3591 and the price is $21.99. Call - 800-258-0929 or go to their website - www.shopoldcarsweekly.com

In looking at the Turbo Regal values and the fact that Fall is approaching, I think the values are a little on the strong side compared to what many of these cars bring today. It does show a listing for the rare 1986 LeSabre Grand National.

One of the top value cars in the book is a 1957 BMW 507 roadster. If you have one of these tucked away in showroom condition, it is valued at $828,000. (My neighbor had one when I was a teenager and he would sometimes lend it to me). Since the book says 2012, we can only hope that the values increase next Spring and the economy and job market also spike upward! Meantime. having gold on hand seems to be the hot ticket.

PHOTO 3 - Special thanks to Wade Shackleton for sending us these photos from our Kirban Reunion Event last month at our house. We show 6 photos of various Buicks throughout the properties.

PHOTO 4 - Since we are now offering reproduction Window Stickers (see next section,) we show a photo of my original window sticker for our 1987 Turbo-T on the left. It was originally sold new in Erie, Pennsylvania. The photo on the right shows the reproduction of the same window sticker. You can see that Triple A Enterprises has been able to duplicate the unusual typestyle GM used back then. The ramp code information is found in the lower right of the window sticker, which we have indicated with an arrow. Basically, it's a weird looking two-letter code. If you do not provide the Vehicle Invoice for your car, this area would remain blank on your reproduction window sticker. This would also hold true where the original selling dealership name would be printed, unless you provide one to print in this area at the top. NOTE - We put a black line through the VIN #.

NEWS ON THE REPRODUCTION BUICK WINDOW STICKERS -

We are now able to offer our customers a custom-made reproduction window sticker for any other 1986-1987 Turbo Buicks. We will also be able to offer reproduction window stickers for the 1962-1970 Buicks, the 1988-1994 Buicks, and the GNX models. This information is not yet on our website.

As mentioned before, if you have a copy of your vehicle invoice, that will enable our source to give you all the information needed to make your reproduction window sticker complete. Without that information found on your vehicle invoice, he won't be able to determine the original selling dealership, the order number of your car and the ramp code which refers to what transport area your car went to.

In some cases, if you do not have your vehicle invoice, you may have something in your glove box that provides the information on the original selling dealership, which would be an important factor to have on your reproduction window sticker.

Since this is not yet on our website, you must contact our office to order your reproduction window sticker.

Below are our part numbers and descriptions of the services we offer concerning your 1986-1987 Turbo Regal. This can all be done by email or fax to our office. Our fax number is 215-766-1615. Or email to - sales@kirbanperformance.com. Be sure to put in the subject line "Window Sticker." Allow 10 days to 2 weeks for first class shipping.

Here is some background information on window stickers and what we require to make your reproduction window sticker as accurate as possible.

BUICK Custom-made REPRODUCTION WINDOW STICKERS -

The most important piece of paper you can have with your car is the original window sticker, which gives all the important "history" of your Buick. It is also something that most buyers want when they purchase an original car. If yours is missing or damaged, we can have a reproduction made specifically for your vehicle.

It may also be called a "Monroney Label," named after the Senator Mike Monroney, who originally proposed the law requiring a window sticker be attached to every new vehicle sold in the United States. This law was passed in 1958, so beginning with the 1959 model year every U.S. produced car had to have this label with each new car for the consumer to see. The bill required an automobile manufacturer to attach a label to the window of each new vehicle. This label would show the MSRP (Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price,) all standard equipment, all optional equipment and their prices, destination and delivery charges, federal, state, and local taxes, and prep charges. It may also show the average fuel economy. This allows a consumer to walk into an automobile dealership and find an itemized, accurate price tag on every new vehicle.

In the beginning, these were very basic, listing the dealer information and optional equipment. Beginning in 1962, salesmen used it as a sales tool as companies started to list standard items as well.

If you have a show car, having a window sticker is a definite asset to the value as it verifies all the options and dealer information from when the car was new.

These reproduction window stickers are all done by Triple A Enterprises. This company has been doing them since 1979, starting with the Corvette market and expanding to the other GM vehicles. He has appointed our company to handle all the Buick requests for window stickers.

The 1986-1987 Buick window stickers were only done in black and white, whereas Buicks had color in the background most of the other years.

Most of the information to make a reproduction window sticker for the 1984-1987 Buicks can be found on your Service Parts Identification (SPI) label found attached to the inside trunk lid. This is also known as the "Trunk ID" label.

If your SPI label is missing, send us a complete list of all your factory options. With that information, we can list them in the correct order, with the correct ID codes, and correct manufacturer's suggested retail delivered price for the optional equipment installed on this vehicle by manufacturer. Be sure to list ALL the options, since this information is important for an accurate window sticker, which may also help when placing a value on your car.

However, that information alone from your SPI Label will not give you all the information needed to make your copy of your window sticker complete. The SPI label will not tell you the original selling GM dealership, the order number, nor the ramp code. In order to get this additional information, go to the GM Archives website - www.gmmediaarchive.com. Their fee is $50 and, in most cases, they can provide you with a copy of the vehicle invoice. It is from that vehicle invoice that the original ship to GM dealership and location can be determined, the order number of your car, and the ramp code. The ramp code was the system to determine what transport area the car went to at the time.

If you do not provide a copy of the vehicle invoice, these particular facts will not appear on your copy of the window sticker. However, in some cases, you may know the name of the selling dealership (ship to dealership,) and their city and state in other paperwork found in your glove box. You can note it to us when you order.

NOTE Regarding the 1987 Grand Nationals - The Grand National originally was an option under the "WE2" code on the window sticker. However, when they decided to produce an additional 10,000 Grand Nationals, those 10,000 were titled as a "Grand National" rather than a 1987 Regal 2 DR Coupe and those would not show a "WE2" under factory options on the window sticker.

For a 1987 Grand National, your car's built date will determine how your window sticker will read. It will either be as a WE2 option or titled as a 1987 Grand National.

We offer various options. You can purchase 1 window sticker for the special year noted at the price noted. You can also order an additional copy at a special rate of only $3. You can have the window sticker(s) laminated at $3 per copy.

Your order will be shipped by USPS in a sturdy mail tube within 10 days of payment. First class mail shipping charge is $5.

ORDERING NOTE - When you place your order, you must send us a clear copy of the Vehicle Invoice and/or related information, and a clear photo of your trunk ID label. You can Fax it to - 215-766-1615 or email it to - sales@kirbanperformance.com using "Window Sticker" in the subject line.

If you don't have an original window sticker or yours is damaged, this is a great addition to your car's reference material.

IMPORTANT - SPECIAL REQUEST -

We STILL need to borrow an original or get a good color photocopy of the 1984 and 1985 Turbo Regal window sticker. This will enable us to get a copy properly made for other Buick owners. Triple A Enterprises has the ability to match the font style GM used, so quality of the reproduction window stickers is very good. We will have all the info shortly, so we can offer this additional service to our customers.

ON THE NEWS FRONT -

The November 2011 issue of Car Craft has an article entitled, "ASK ANYTHING" by Jeff Smith, the senior technical editor for Car Craft magazine. You might want to pick up a copy.

I have known Jeff for many years and he remembers when I sent him a pair of the Pontiac Ralley wheels we had made back in the mid-1980s. A few months ago they did an article in Car Craft about the current oils and lack of zddp related to flat-tappet engines.

I contacted him and sent him information on ZDDPlus™ and Richard Clark. This current November article reflects what Jeff learned from what I sent him and by checking out the www.zddplus.com website.

The bottom line is the 4-ounce bottle of ZDDPlus™ is cheap insurance to protect your car. As a Turbo Buick owner, it's important to be sure to run one bottle with any of the SM oil you are currently using.

NEWS ON THE VIDEO FRONT -

For over the last 2 years Andrew Fillippone Jr. has been making a movie on the Grand National and how it came about. He has posted a short clip from the film he has been working on. Many of you may have seen him at past GS Nationals or at Richard Clark's events.

Here's a link to his documentary clip:

GREAT CAR AD ON CRAIGS LIST -

I saw this ad on Craig's List.

"88 Yugo GVL parts car. I've had it for about 6 years, previous owner had for a while, last registered/run in '96.

Need to clear out the garage. I believe its fairly complete. I should be able to find the title as well.

It's free...come and get it, should roll freely."

At least this seller has put a realistic value on the Yugo!

CONDOLENCES -

Our sincere condolences to Pete Hoffman on the death of his father. Our sympathies also to his mother Nancy, and his family Karen & Tim, Jennifer, Bill, Damien & Jake and Kristen.

GRAY PALLEX SEAT MATERIAL UPDATE -

Currently we have less than half of our roll left, as several customers have bought 2 and 3 sections of it to do several cars. So, if you have a 1985-1987 Grand National, you may want to get a sample of this material to see if it's something you want to have tucked away. Most of the pallex material you find today from companies sells for over $75 to $95 a yard.

We do NOT have the black pallex material. In many cases, the original black material should be good enough to simply re-use and install the new gray pallex material. The black is a lot easier to match whereas the gray is something that can vary. Keep in mind, before we sell you any material, please email me your name and address so I can send you a sample. That way, you know the exact shade of gray material you would receive - denniskirban@yahoo.com

NOTE ABOUT PHOTOS ON THE WEBSITE -

We have heard from a couple people that have viewed the photos on the website. Because these have to be low-resolution photos to work on the Inner Circle segments on the website, any photos of text don't appear clear when enlarged. This is a problem when you are trying to see numbers, such as those on the VIN labels or pages from Options booklet. Also, because of photo reproduction and computer screen variations, the colors may not be true to the actual product or photo.

If you would like to have us email you any photo at the higher resolution for viewing, just email us and we will email them to you. Be sure to be specific on which pictures you want to see - Reference Inner Circle date and photo number 1, 2, 3 or 4 - denniskirban@yahoo.com.

ALWAYS IN A BUYING POSITION WORKS -

Got any turbo parts you are not using? Why not cash them in for parts you need with a Letter of Credit. Simply email me a list - denniskirban@yahoo.com.

Also, we are still buying dead or partially dead 1984-1987 Turbo Regals under $4,000 that are within 250 to 350 miles of our location.

31st ANNUAL GS NATIONALS - BOWLING GREEN, KENTUCKY
OCTOBER 19-22, 2011 - Beech Bend Raceway, Bowling Green, KY

The 31st Annual GS Nationals will be held October 19-22 in Bowling Green, KY. Last year the weather was just perfect with autumn colors greeting us on the beautiful drive there. The GS Nationals is by far the largest and longest running Buick musclecar event in the world. There will be many race classes, the usual big Friday Car Show, swap meet, Vendor's Row and even tech seminars.

For the turbo V-6 guys, John Gallina and crew will return once again with Kenny Duttweiler for even deeper blasts into the 6's, eclipsing last year's 6.85/204 mph pass! Hope to see all you hard-core Buick fans there to share the fun! No pre-registration is necessary.

We will be in attendance as a vendor. This event replaces the one that used to be held in May each year.

For more information, check out their website - http://www.gsnationals.com

IN CLOSING -

Remember, Fall is a great time to drive our cars. The cool air will be a welcomed relief. Those of us that witness the changing of the seasons will soon see a wide variety of colors across the landscape.

Be sure to mark the date for our Fall Open House - October 8th.

I went to see the movie "The Help" Sunday afternoon with Eileen. I highly recommend it!
