A LOOK AT FACTORY SPARK PLUG WIRES

As many original owners know, the spark plug wires that came on your car when it was new were grey with a straight boot at the spark plug end. What makes these wires unique is that each one was numbered to match up to each cylinder - 1 thru 6. Besides the cylinder number appearing every three or four inches, there's also wording "GM ELECTRONIC SUPPRESSION 8MM."

We have posted a photo of these original wires on a car on the web site's Inner Circle 05-13-2009. There is also a photo of the wires we currently offer, Part #1531.

While we have reproduced grey plug wires custom cut to the same factory lengths as the 1986-1987 Turbo Regals, our wires do not have any of the original wording printed on them.

Besides needing a GM license agreement to reproduce the actual GM wording on the spark plug wires, you would have a sizable investment in up-front costs.

First, a print wheel would have to be made for each number - 1 thru 6. That means 6 different print wheels would have to be made. In order to interest a spark plug wire company into running them, you would have to commit to several thousand feet, with a minimum run for EACH numbered wire.

I know this from firsthand experience. Years ago we had all the Pontiac GTO spark plug wires done for the 2nd and 4th quarter of every year from 1963 through 1972. That involved 18-20 different print wheels alone. Our source had written permission from Packard to reproduce the wires, since the name "Packard" appeared on those wires, not GM.

That same source makes our plain grey 1986-1987 Turbo Regal spark plug wires today. A note of interest - this same company does Callaway Corvettes spark plug wires for the new C6 Corvettes.

The GM replacement wires are black and produced in a universal format, which makes those wires ill fitting for your application. Fit is critical for Turbo Buicks, since any excessively longer spark plug wires can easily short out by coming in contact with the factory exhaust manifolds.

To my knowledge, we are the only source for grey spark plug wires that are similar in appearance to the factory original spark plug wires.

Several years ago we also reproduced the 1984-1985 Turbo Regal spark plug wires, but discontinued them due to lack of demand. Since we would have to commit to a large run of wires, it was not worth restocking them. Back then, we also made 1986-1987 Turbo Regal spark plug wires that had the catch phrase "B-B-B-B-Bad-to the Bone!" imprinted in black on the spark plug wires. These have also been discontinued.

If you are a long-time customer, you may recall the "Touch and Go" Ignition Cut-off System. We sold hundreds of them from around 1992 until 1999. Matter of fact, at one of our Reunion events back in 1992, our son Darrell installed about 30 units in cars at the show.

This system has all the great features.

First, only one wire in your car gets cut, then it is run in a series to the unit.

Second, no switch gets triggered.

Third, it sets automatically 30 seconds after you shut your car off. Nothing to remember.

Lastly, no siren. (It does have valet mode)

So, even on an all-original car, nothing is visible under the hood to distract from that original car appearance. With no switch to trigger it, makes it difficult for a thief to figure out how to defeat the system.

This new unit will be based on the original design, only now everything internally will be digital. Since there has been great advancement in electronics, this newer design draws even less current and the control box is slightly smaller than the previous system.

We have a local source that is going to be making them for us. The projected price should be around $74.95 each.

This new "Touch and GO" system will work virtually on any car or truck that does not have an airbag. It is best suited for a vehicle that contains no other aftermarket electronic alarm system. The new Touch and GO system will come with easy-to-follow directions specifically for the 1984-1987 Turbo Regals.

Watch for updates. After all, if your car gets stolen, we lose a customer!

The GM black passenger's side marker light is no longer available from GM, GM Part #0919874.

This is the side marker light that was used on all the 1984-1986 T-Types and 1987 Turbo-Ts with black-out package, WE4, Grand Nationals and GNX. This is the right hand side only (passenger's side) marker light that attaches to the headlight bezel.

We have a few left.

Remember, these are brand new, still in the GM wrapper. Price is $69.95 and shipping.

SOUTHERN BUICK SHOOTOUT 2009 - Reynolds, Georgia -
Friday & Saturday, NOVEMBER 6th & 7th, 2009 -
We received information from Clint Atkins and Cal and Holly Hartline about The Southern Buick Shootout 2009 event at the Silver Dollar Raceway is scheduled for November 6th and 7th, 2009. This event will be open to any and all BUICK, OLDS, PONTIAC cars. The event will include a points race for the TSO and TSM categories, as well as other potential Buick categories. The plan is to have heads-up / index pacing available for those racers that cannot run in TSM/TSO categories. They also plan to have Gamblers Racing for both Sportsman type cars (no delay boxes allowed) and Top Eliminator (delay Box). The will be Test-N-Tune all day both days. Thought this info may fit in with your Inner Circle:

We were up in Watkins Glen this past week with friends that came over from England.

I had heard somewhere that you could take your car to the racetrack, and take a few laps - so we went to the track for all the info.

Every weekday at 12:00 noon, while the various car clubs go to lunch, they open the track for passenger cars for $25 a carload.

You get briefed on the history of the track, etc., then get in line behind the pace car, which is a new Toyota Camry twin turbo factory race-equipped - top speed of 165 mph.

They said the speed limit was 55 mph, since they've had lots of pickup trucks and SUV's going off the course and even rolling over.

I didn't care about the speed limit, since I was more interested in just being on the track where I've seen several F1 and Nascar races, and since I was driving the family Saab wagon.

The day we went, there was only one other car besides us, so it was the pace car, followed by a Chevy Intimidator, then us.

Entered the course on the downhill stretch after the first turn. By the time we climbed the hill and reached the esses before the back straight, the pace car and the Intimidator were nowhere to be seen. They were flying.

After two laps (they were about 2 miles ahead of us), we stopped at the start/finish line so we could take pictures of the pit area and grandstands, etc.

We asked the pace car driver (an off-duty Watkins Glen cop) how fast he was going in the straights… he told us he was really taking it easy (125), but he could fly through the corners.

One more lap (I think I averaged about 65 mph, top speed about 95, because my rear brakes are getting low) then we were allowed to sit in the stands and watch some of the car clubs take practice laps.

This is a must-do for any car person - only don't do any wine tasting before you go.
