MORE INFORMATION ON DATE CODES -

I realize not all Turbo Buick owners are restoring their Turbo Buicks by strict date code guidelines.

There is one area that date codes probably have the most importance in your day-to-day life. I am referring to the date codes found on food. In many cases, it may be your wife that is more conscious of date codes. If you have ever gotten food poisoning, it serves as a wake up call to the importance of date codes! I have had first hand experience with food poisoning on a road trip about 25 years ago. It is not something you soon forget!

As we have pointed out in earlier issues, almost every part in our car has some sort of date code. It would have been nice if the code system was consistent - all the same and in the same order - but that is not the case.

The spark control unit is just one of the small sensors/relays that can be found under the hood of your Turbo Regal. GM mounted the spark control unit as the last one on the passenger's side bracket.

PHOTO 1 - The upper photo shows an electronic spark control (ESC) unit I just removed from the 1987 Turbo-T. The paper sticker that shows the application is missing from this example.

You can see the hot stamped date code on this unit (highlighted with the red arrow.) The last 4 digits represents the date code. Prior to the date code is a series of 2 sets of 4 other digits, which I have no idea what they mean. In this case the date code reads 6333. This would stand for 1986 333rd day of that year. What is interesting is matching the part to the photo the GM logo is upside down and on the other side. However when it is installed on the inner fender the GM logo will read right side up, and the date code will be upside down!

In many cases, the hot stamp method of coding the various relays/sensors is hard to read. Unless you are a walking book of knowledge on these cars with their various methods of date coding, you can see how difficult it can be to have a 100% original date-coded car.

The lower photo shows the paper decal intact on our personal Turbo-T (highlighted with the red arrow.)

PHOTO 2 - This "(ESC) ELECTRONIC SPARK CONTROL" page is from my 1987 Parts Identification and Inspection Guide. It illustrates where the date code is located. This time they list the year, then the day of the year. Note the GM logo embossed in the left side of the unit. This page also explains how to tell if the part has failed showing resistance on each of the 5 terminals.

We have shown just a few different examples of date coding in the last few Inner Circles.

POWER 6 LOGO - 1981 BUICK PACE CAR -

I think the earliest you can find the "Power 6" logo used or the "Turbo" logo, as it is sometimes referred to, is related to the 1981 Buick Pace car.

PHOTO 3 - Show items from my private collection. The top photo shows a letter opener, probably the most rare item I have associated with the 1981 Buick Pace car. On the back of this letter opener it says, "Zippo USA Stainless," which is the name of the cigarette lighter company. The lower left photo show two dash plagues I have; one shows no number for the car and the other shows #147 for the car number. The photo on the lower right shows a cloth patch, which would be sewn on the special jacket they offered.

PHOTO 4 - Here is an extremely rare 1981 Buick Pace Car silver satin jacket. This one appears to be new and is size small. The label actually says, "Made in the U.S.A". The logo shown in the closeup on the right used on this jacket can also be found on other items as well from that part of Buick history.

GREAT NEWS -
LAWRENCE CONLEY & KEN DUTTWEILER
CONFIRMED FOR THE TurboBuick.com NATIONALS

We received confirmation that Lawrence Conley (original owner of "TWEAKED") and Ken Duttweiler will be special guests at the TurboBuick.com Nationals in North Carolina in May. Both are scheduled to speak on Thursday (May 12th) at Richard Clark's shop.

These are two well-respected, major players that were in the forefront of the 1/4-mile Turbo Buick racing field.

This will be a trip down Memory Lane and a rare chance to meet Lawrence and Kenny at Richard's shop. Usually they can be seen busy preparing their cars at the track.

Don't miss this event!

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT -

Jean Dinning passed away February 22nd at the age of 86. She was one of nine children. She wrote the hit song "Teen Angel," which was released in 1959 and sung by her brother Mark. It was an instant hit!

The song that was number one prior to Teen Angel was "Running Bear" song by Johnny Preston. Ironically, both songs had tragic endings. Johnny Preston passed away March 4th, four days after Jean Dunning died. The song Running Bear was written by J. P. Richardson, better known as the "Big Bopper." Performing the song's Indian chants on the actual recording are not only J. P Richardson but also George Jones!

NOTE ABOUT PHOTOS ON THE WEBSITE -

We have heard from a couple people that have viewed the photos on the website. Because these have to be low-resolution photos to work on the Inner Circle segments on the website, any photos of text don't appear clear when enlarged. This is a problem when you are trying to see numbers, such as those on the VIN labels or pages from Options booklet. Also, because of photo reproduction and computer screen variations, the colors may not be true to the actual product or photo.

If you would like to have us email you any photo at the higher resolution for viewing, just email us and we will email them to you. Be sure to be specific on which pictures you want to see - Reference Inner Circle date and photo number 1, 2, 3 or 4 - denniskirban@yahoo.com

ALWAYS IN A BUYING POSITION WORKS -

2011 BUICK PERFORMANCE GROUP - JULY 29th - 31st, 2011 - HEBRON, OHIO -

The Buick Performance Group event will feature the Turbo Buick "step children" the T-Types and Pontiac's unclaimed child the Turbo Trans Am. The event is at National Trail Raceway in Hebron, Ohio.

They have secured Scott Kelly to attend, as well as Denny Manner, Joe Guzek, Dave Roland, Ron Yuile. Denny has also contacted Tom Wallace in hopes that he will attend. The people mentioned have also contacted other retired Buick Engineers, including Mike Doble to have them attend. There will be displays and "tech" talks, so it should be very informative. I don't think there has ever been that many Turbo G-body Engineers in one place at one time. This is one event you do not want to miss this summer!

Information for the Event can be found here -http://www.buickperformancegroup.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?8-BPG-Nationals
