MORE INFORMATION ON DATE CODES -

By now most of you realize GM used various date coding formats on most of their parts. Some of course are more visible than others.

The 1985-1987 powermaster brake unit had a label attached to the electric motor indicating the day and year.

PHOTO 1 - Shows the POWERMASTER BRAKE UNIT page from my 1987 Parts Identification and Inspection Guide. It shows the position for the date code on the powermaster brake motor.

PHOTO 2 - Shows a close up of one of the powermasters we have as cores to get rebuilt. The last line of numbers is the date code - first the day of the year followed by a space and then the year. In this case it reads, 258th day of 1987. The complete label reads, "PUMP AS 8011279 5048894 258 7."

This label would be very difficult to see on the powermaster electric motor in your car because it faces the engine and is located directly under the one bracket. Even if it was visible, since it's not an embossed stamping, oil or brake fluid may have made it unreadable.

One of the more important tags on your 1984-1987 Turbo Regal would be the Body Trim Plate. This metal stamped plate is about the size of a credit card, 3-1/2" x 2". It is secured by two small metal screws and located on the upper cowl area on the driver's side near the wiper arm under the hood.

Unfortunately, some of the information I have does not make sense to the 4 body tag plates I have saved from recent Turbo Regals I have dismantled. Here is what I do know for sure. In most cases, the top line the second group of numbers/letters combination will read, "4GJ47." This means Buick Motor Division, which is (4) the G is for the body type, 47 is the body style. In a smaller typestyle after that should be a letter P, which stands for the assembly plant. P is for Pontiac, which was the final assembly plant.

The next 6 digits represent the unit number. This number also appears on the Door Pad Broadcast Sheet and the Seat Cushion Broadcast Sheet. On those sheets they refer to this number as the "Body Number."

PHOTO 3 - The top photo shows a portion of an actual Door Pad Broadcast Sheet. The lower photo shows the matching Body Trim Plate. We have highlighted the body number 070925 as it appears in the Door Pad Broadcast Sheet and in the upper right corner of the Body Trim Plate with red arrows.

The second line of number/letter codes will pinpoint the color or colors your car was originally. The first digits is the color for the lower part of the car followed by the L for lower. The next group will be the digits for the upper part of the car followed by the letter U for upper. In this case, both numbers are same for the upper and lower paint color. The code is 71, which in 1987 was Rosewood Metallic. Following the paint codes (at least on the four trim plates I have), it says, "Lacquer."

The third line of copy will show the seat option and any roof option. Most will have AR9, which is for bucket seats. Roof option would be a code for T-Tops (CC1) or Astroroof (CF5) or padded roof, etc with the proper code.

There is a code prior to the seat option that deals with trim package. In the example we are showing it reads, "79B." This stands for cloth seats in ruby red color. In other words, that code will tell you the seat material color.

PHOTO 4 - To locate most of the codes we have referred to in this article, you need a GM PRODUCTION OPTIONS PASSENGER/LIGHT TRUCK booklet. Here we show two different dated booklets. One is "EFFECTIVE JANUARY 1996" and the other is "EFFECTIVE APRIL 1998." I don't think GM prints these options booklets any more, since everything for the current cars in available online.

These booklets were printed every few months as each new model year became available. Unfortunately, there is not just one research source to fully document everything related to your car in one single book.

I am far from an expert and, like you, I'm also learning more and more about these cars as time goes on.

We welcome any comments that can further explain the codes on the Body Trim Plate with proof.

NOTE ABOUT PHOTOS ON THE WEBSITE -

We have heard from a couple people that have viewed the photos on the website. Because these have to be low-resolution photos to work on the Inner Circle segments on the website, any photos of text don't appear clear when enlarged. This is a problem when you are trying to see numbers, such as those on the VIN labels or pages from Options booklet. Also, because of photo reproduction and computer screen variations, the colors may not be true to the actual product or photo.

If you would like to have us email you any photo at the higher resolution for viewing, just email us and we will email them to you. Be sure to be specific on which pictures you want to see - Reference Inner Circle date and photo number 1, 2, 3 or 4 - denniskirban@yahoo.com

2011 BUICK PERFORMANCE GROUP - JULY 29th - 31st, 2011 - HEBRON, OHIO -

The Buick Performance Group event will feature the Turbo Buick "step children" the T-Types and Pontiac's unclaimed child the Turbo Trans Am. The event is at National Trail Raceway in Hebron, Ohio.

They have secured Scott Kelly to attend, as well as Denny Manner, Joe Guzek, Dave Roland, Ron Yuile. Denny has also contacted Tom Wallace in hopes that he will attend. The people mentioned have also contacted other retired Buick Engineers, including Mike Doble to have them attend. There will be displays and "tech" talks, so it should be very informative. I don't think there has ever been that many Turbo G-body Engineers in one place at one time. This is one event you do not want to miss this summer!
