EARLY RAM AIR SYSTEM -

Greg, my car guy from New Jersey, recently bought a 1987 Turbo-T from the original owner and it had this unusual ram air system on it. Greg removed it before selling the car. In some ways, it appears crude and may have been an early design from one of the companies back in the late 1980s.

PHOTO 1 - Shows the main pieces that make up this crude-looking ram air system. The air dam is like new and is a factory GM air dam, which has been cut with a metal mesh screen attached in the opening. Off the one lip of the air dam is a small metal tab that attaches to the metal scoop shown in the photo. The air cleaner is inside the cylinder can and appears to have been covered in fiberglass. It has a screw-on lid to gain access to the air cleaner. Between this and the scoop portion, there was your basic silver flex dryer hose, which was in poor condition. Does anybody recognize this and who sold it originally?

EARLY GM TELEPHONES -

We are all familiar with most of the various options and accessories GM offered back during the Turbo Regal years. One accessory that I have never seen mentioned anywhere was in its infancy back in 1984-1985, the GM bag phone. This is something we all take for granted today, the age of the cell phone.

This type of phone was probably more popular in the late 1980s as a factory option in some of the 5 and 7 series BMWs. At least that is where I remember seeing them in cars.

The only reference I have found to GM cell phones is a short paragraph under the features at the front of each Buick Dealer Album in 1984 through 1987. I would assume, based on the costs back then, that the few that opted for the cell phone option probably purchased a Buick Riviera or a Buick Park Avenue.

Even with my wealth of available information in print and the internet, I have found out very little about the early cell phones from GM.

Even with so little information available, I was able to buy several brand new GM bag phones. These would have been offered by GM on all their car lines, since it was a bag phone powered by the cigarette lighter. I found a few dealers that still had them in inventory! Even in these cases none of the dealers I bought them from could pinpoint the years they were available. Even armed with part numbers I have found nothing on them. I have never even seen one in a late 1980s GM car at a car show. Early cell phones were referred to as "bag phones." Reception when cell phones first became available where limited based on the cell tower locations. Like all electronic devices, early ones where quite large compared to the current counterparts today.

PHOTO 2 - Shows two views of the original GM box with the phone kit inside. The lower photo shows all the pieces included in the box of this brand new factory GM Delco Electronics bag phone. The transceiver, actual phone, phone cradle, power cord to connect phone to the transceiver, screw-in antenna that attaches to the transceiver and the cigarette power cord. Shows the actual cloth carrier bag, and included with it is an optional shoulder strap! It has dual zippered compartments to house the transceiver and the actual phone. It says "Delco Electronics" on the face of the actual phone. The transceiver was made in Hong Kong for Nokia.

PHOTO 3 - Shows the actual Delco Electronics User's Guide. It runs 40 pages in length. No date appears in the booklet. The second photo shows the page on getting started with your new phone! Although I do not have it, the booklet also talks about an optional portable battery kit, which would enable the user to use the bag phone elsewhere rather than using the cigarette lighter for a power source. That was an additional option you could purchase and was not part of this kit. Interesting note, it says while transporting it in a vehicle, it is recommended the softpack transportable is secured using the vehicles seat belt!

PHOTO 4 - Shows a Features page from the 1985 Dealer Album, "Telephone, Cellular." It is also mentioned in the 1986 and 1987 Dealer Albums. Because of the lack of information on these early GM bag phones, I have not been able to find out what the retail prices where back then. From what I have been told, they were around $300 to $350 back in the day!

Obviously at some point, probably a dozen years ago or more, GM got out of the telephone business and that option or accessory is now just a vague memory! When did you ever see one?

Currently we have several people interested and we are trying to set up a time frame so they can see the car. This same owner has a Firehawk, a Typhoon and a notchback 5.0 Mustang all in a similar situation with very low miles on them. ANOTHER 50's LEGEND DIES -

The tradition is being carried on by his son Carl Gardner Jr., who has become the lead singer since his Dad retired in 2005.

NEW PART NOW AVAILABLE - INNER DOOR WEATHERSTRIPS -

1984-1987 Buick Turbo Regal -
INNER DOORSILL WEATHERSTRIPS (2)

These are the inside door edge sill weatherstrips that you rest your arm on at the top of the door windows. These attach to the upper portion of the door panels. Due to age and sun exposure, the originals may be cracked, unless the car has been properly garaged.

These are correct for all 1984-1987 Turbo Regals, regardless of trim. Weatherstrips are black, with a thin strip of the stainless trim along one edge, measure approximately 4' x 2," and are only sold in pairs.

Since many cars are now being restored, these are a great replacement. These are made by the same source that makes the #7217 outer black doorsill weatherstrips we sell.

NOTE ABOUT PHOTOS ON THE WEBSITE -

We have heard from a couple people that have viewed the photos on the website. Because these have to be low-resolution photos to work on the Inner Circle segments on the website, any photos of text don't appear clear when enlarged. This is a problem when you are trying to see numbers, such as those on the VIN labels or pages from Options booklet. Also, because of photo reproduction and computer screen variations, the colors may not be true to the actual product or photo.

If you would like to have us email you any photo at the higher resolution for viewing, just email us and we will email them to you. Be sure to be specific on which pictures you want to see - Reference Inner Circle date and photo number 1, 2, 3 or 4 - denniskirban@yahoo.com.

2011 BUICK PERFORMANCE GROUP - JULY 29th - 31st, 2011 - HEBRON, OHIO -

The Buick Performance Group event will feature the Turbo Buick "step children" the T-Types and Pontiac's unclaimed child the Turbo Trans Am. The event is at National Trail Raceway in Hebron, Ohio.

They have secured Scott Kelly to attend, as well as Denny Manner, Joe Guzek, Dave Roland, Ron Yuile. Denny has also contacted Tom Wallace in hopes that he will attend. The people mentioned have also contacted other retired Buick Engineers, including Mike Doble to have them attend. There will be displays and "tech" talks, so it should be very informative. We will be attending this major event that entire weekend. So, bring us any parts you want to trade in and we especially want powermaster cores. We will be set up as a vendor.
