UNUSUAL 1986 REGAL COUPE -

As many of you know, we have been buying dead or nearly dead 1984-1987 Turbo Regals. We recently bought a V8 Regal 1986 model. We only bought it because it was very unusual for a regular Regal. The car also came with a folder of receipts and the original window sticker. This Regal coupe had a sticker price of $16,128. That kind of money would buy a T-Type or Grand National in 1986.

This car had the Turbo Regal bucket seats with center console, the optional V8 5.0 litre 307 engine, power windows, locks, tilt, cruise, trip odometer, power trunk release, carpet savers, power driver's bucket seat, power antenna, trunk kit, body side molding, door edge guards, posi rear with 2.56 gears, exterior molding package, am/fm cassette radio, concert sound II, padded roof, and T-Tops! (Car had a few other obscure options as well).

Basically, almost every option the original owner could order, yet not step up to the turbo powerplant.

By most unusual, I refer to the fact it has T-Tops and the half-padded landau top.

Most regular Regals were purchased by older individuals or those with families, making it very unusual to see T-Tops on a regular Regal.

The cost of the 5.0 V8 engine was $540 extra. Also unusual the original owner ordered the Limited exterior trim, which was $110 more.

The bottom line is, this V8 Regal price sticker was equal to what you could have bought a T-Type or Grand National for back in 1986 had a few options been deleted!

PHOTO 1 - Back when these cars were new, dealers would usually put all your glove box manuals either in a clear envelope or a folder, such as the one shown in our Photo 1. There are companies that produce certain products that cater to car dealers, such as sales tags, price stickers, etc. This was a fairly common format for an envelope. The dealers would buy the envelope, and imprint their own dealer info. Notice that this particular dealer also was an Opel dealer as well. Although by 1986, I am pretty certain Opels were no longer sold by Buick dealers. (Around 1964 my Dad bought an Opel Station wagon that I drove.)

PHOTO 2 - Shows unusual combination of the Landau padded roof option with the factory T-Tops. With all the Turbo cars we have owned and sold, I only had 1 that had both of those options. Although that combination is quite rare, I would have to say it is not very desirable among Turbo Regal collectors.

What was very interesting to me was seeing the optional trunk covering kit, a $47 option, code "B48." While our company and several others make similar kits based on this factory trunk covering, to my knowledge no one makes them 100% exact. The reason is the original had a molded piece that went down in the wheel well. Granted, you do not see this since the spare hides it, but it was a pretty involved kit.

PHOTO 3 - Shows the spare tire well with the trunk covering intact. You can see where the carpet covering is cut out for the hook that holds the spare tire in place.

PHOTO 4 - Shows the backside of the main trunk flooring section. The molded spare tire well is now pointing upward. You can see GM also had a section of padding attached to the top half of the base covering. To make this 100% exact in the aftermarket world, it would require a sizeable investment to make the mold to make that spare tire well section. This particular trunk kit is in nice condition. Because it is one piece in the spare tire well, usually moisture collects and this becomes mildew over a period of time. The one pictured is dry.

Originally the price for this option was just $47, so it was a very good deal. From what I recall, if you decided to purchase all the sections of the trunk covering individually back when it was available, you would have spent well over $100. The small label on the back of the trunk covering read "MASLAND 20330085 WTDA 8200 GREY GM G BODY."

Most Turbo owners are in agreement that the trunk kit really dresses up the trunk area over the standard one-piece black carpet GM simply placed on the trunk floor. It also protects the quarter panels, especially if something loose in the trunk hits them and puts a dent in the quarter panel.

GREAT NEWS ON THE GNX EXHAUST SYSTEM -

Confirming information from Richard Clark... I was able to get an update on a couple projects he's working on.

He has the directions almost done for the GNX exhaust system. Parts are on hand and boxes are currently being made for this project.

Here are the specs on the GNX exhaust systems -

1987 GNX & 1986-1987 GRAND NATIONAL -
REPRODUCTION STAINLESS EXHAUST SYSTEMS

NOTE - The GNX reproduction exhaust system will ONLY fit real GNXs and any 1986-1987 Turbo Regals that have been fitted with the reproduction GNX rear suspension systems. It will not fit regular Turbo Regals!

Both exhaust systems are made from 304 stainless and use the same highly polished center-to-center mufflers, which come with each kit.

Both systems are true 2-1/2" diameter system throughout, unlike the factory, which reduces down in several places to 2-1/4". Each pipe is mandrel bent. Tailpipes are angled cut to match the originals and exit exactly in the same area as the originals. All new stainless guillotine clamps are included. The hangers, which secure the system on the tailpipes, are not visible. Each system is trial fitted in a fixture to insure a perfect fit for the end consumer.

Each exhaust system is dropped shipped from North Carolina in a single box weighing approximately 50-55 lbs.

These two projects have been developed by Richard Clark, so you can be assured of fit and quality throughout.

These are excellent exhaust system upgrades.

One of the parts in the works for late spring delivery is the factory-style HEADERS for the 1986-1987 Turbo Regals. We expect to also have the driver's side alone available as well.

GM PARTS UPDATE -

It appears that the GM supply of the factory 1986-1987 GM factory original molded boost line kits are dwindling and may already have disappeared from GM's warehouses inventory. We currently have a decent supply of them.

This is a very critical part, for any 1986-1987 Turbo Regal, since it is needed to control boost. They have 3 specially formed hoses with a special size diameter T in between two of the molded hoses. These also have the GM wording on them. Over a period of time, heat can cause the hoses to swell and crack. While they last, we have them available for $44.95, Part #6644. Supplies are limited.
