This two-piece stainless 3″ down pipe is a direct bolt-on replacement for the original highly restrictive down pipe that now goes from the turbo to your catalytic converter. If you look at your stock down pipe where it bolts to the back of the turbo outlet, it is necked down to a mere 2″ and at its widest point, it barely gets over 2-1/4″ in diameter. The actual opening on the exit side of your turbo is almost 3″, but GM used a gasket donut and necks down the pipe which causes restriction in this area.
This new 3″ stainless down pipe is a two-piece design which makes it easy to install. You MUST have the factory GM headers on your car for this new down pipe to fit. It ends up in the same spot as the original down pipe, so the only other modification you need to do is to expand the inlet of what your stock down pipe attaches to. This can easily be done by any muffler shop. The gain is tremendous! Everything happens quicker. Depending on what exhaust system you are running, it will make it slightly louder between 2,000 and 2,200 RPMs. This new pipe also looks better than the stock pipe plus it is one of those products that makes power, yet maintains a stock appearance under the hood!
COMMENTS - We installed the initial pipe on one of our 1987 T’s with 159,000 miles and it has turned it into one of the fastest T’s we’ve had! Subscriber Dave Nahre says “I used to run a fender dump pipe. I installed this new 3″ down pipe in two hours at home and was amazed at the results. Under hard acceleration it actually makes my seat belt tighten up!”
Down pipe comes complete with instructions, clamps and some tips on how to port the turbo exhaust housing before installing this new down pipe. Fit is excellent because of its unique two-piece design. We recommend these be installed by a qualified mechanic.
