THE EVOLUTION OF THE MODIFIED FUEL PRESSURE REGULATOR - PART 2 -
Another early method of adjusting the fuel pressure on the original Bosch fuel pressure regulator on the Turbo Regal was a metal device that clamped on to the sides of the fuel pressure regulator. Although primitive looking in design, it did function as claimed. Paul Vilser a long time Turbo Buick owner emailed this information to us last week. We are unsure what original company made them. So you can see how the means to adjust fuel pressure on our Turbo Buicks have evolved over the years.
Because of our involvement of marketing Mustang parts since 1991, several major Mustang companies approached us about making adjustable fuel regulators for the then popular 5.0 Fox body Mustangs. Back then several manufacturers where making them but some had problems with functioning as claimed.
One of the other issue Mustang companies were having is because of the fuel regulators location some versions would not fit when the customer went with an aftermarket intake. Our Mustang adjustable fuel regulator was tested and worked with over a dozen different intakes making it a winner.
The trick was to design one that resembled the original Bosch unit in size and format which is what we had done for the Turbo Buick. By making adjustable ones formatted to the originals this enabled them to fit and work in all the various aftermarket applications which was critical in the Mustang market place.
PHOTO 1 - The top photo shows 3 different billet style fuel pressure regulators. The first one is the Turbo Buick one. The second one is one of four different versions we get made for the older Porsche applications. The third one shown is the most popular one we ever have had made, and it is for all the older 5.0 Mustang engines. It is known in the Mustang world as the billet 3-bolt design. (3 bolt refers to the mounting points to the fuel rail.) You can clearly see how all the top halves are identical which saves tooling costs and production costs. The bases vary in format and in the case of the Mustang it is a good 1/2 shorter, which duplicates the factory Bosch regulator originally. This is critical on the Ford in order to fit under the intake manifold.
We also had made the later two-bolt style Mustang fuel regulator, which fit some of the later ones until Ford moved the regulator from the engine.
The lower photo in PHOTO 1 shows probably the most important feature of these billet design fuel regulators - the special material used for the internal diaphragm. This material holds up to any type of fuel the customer may be using. This photo also shows the 5.0 Mustang fuel regulator with its 3-bolt mounting design. Our company is the sole supplier of both the Mustang and the various Porsche billet-style fuel regulators. We are proud to say, all these billet-style fuel pressure regulators are made 100% in the U.S.A. and have been virtually trouble free.

SAD NEWS - Part Two - PAUL ZAZAZINE -
As we mentioned last week, our good friend for many, many years, Paul Zazarine passed away on Monday, January 3rd. Because of our association with the Pontiac GTOs, we have attended many events with Paul and he has also come to some of our events. He was well-known for his many automotive articles, especially for GTOs, Corvettes and Mustangs. He co-authored the "GTO Restoration Guide" with Chuck Roberts, and co-wrote "Glory Days" with Jim Wangers.
By now many of you have seen the various posts on the internet about Paul. I had a call this week from one of his good friends and ours, Chuck Roberts. Chuck co-authored the "Pontiac GTO Restoration Guide" with Paul back in 1985. He was one of the first to hear from Paul's wife when he passed last Monday morning.
I believe my wife and I first met Paul back at the Pontiac National Convention in 1980 in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. At that time, we took our 1968 GTO and our 1967 Ram Air Firebird to this event.
I would see Paul often at the various national GTO conventions and also at the Pontiac National Conventions. In later years, he and I along with Jim Wangers and John Sawruk would be invited speakers at many of the same events.
Paul and Chuck formed a Pontiac Club back in 1978 down in Maryland where he originally lived. At one time, Paul served on the Board of Directors for the Pontiac Oakland Club International (POCI), which is the international club for the Pontiac/Oakland brand.
Long-time customers of ours may recall the very first event, GTO/BUICK HEAVEN, we held in June 1988. It was held at our house on Sugar Bottom Road in Furlong, Pennsylvania. Several of our neighbors also allowed cars to be displayed on their properties too. This event was open to all GTOs and Turbo Buicks and was attended by over 250 people. We had 3 real GNXs present, 9 GTOs that had Hurst wheels on the cars. We even had Bill Campbell, the co-founder of Hurst Performance, at this event. Just over 110 GTOs and Turbo Buicks showed up for this event!
At the time, Paul was the editor of Muscle Car Review magazine located in Florida. He came up to cover this event for the magazine. It was featured in the January 1989 issue. We felt honored that he made this trip to cover what was basically a private event that was not held by any national club. Especially since the show wasn't at a convention center, but rather at a private house on a country road. It was so unique, even our neighbor opened up their yard to cars and set up a barbeque and helped feed the attendees. They weren't even "car people."
In talking to Chuck last week (who, by the way, bought one of our Turbo Regals years ago), I asked him about the Pontiac GTO Restoration Guide he and Paul wrote. He told me it took 3 years of research to get that book together and it was first published in 1985. At that time it covered 1964-1970 GTOs. In 1995 they did a new expanded version that covered up through 1972.
In the GTO world, this book has always been considered the "Bible" for restoring GTOs. It runs over 500 pages. It provided the inspiration for me to write my book, "Kirban's Guide to 1986-1987 Buick Turbo Regals."
Paul was also a very well versed writer on many different American Muscle cars, including the Corvette. He also wrote several other books for Motorbooks International on the GTOs.
PHOTO 2 - The 2 top left photos show Paul and his wife Alexis. The top right photo shows the letter Paul wrote me just after our first home event. The letter explained when it would appear in "MUSCLE CAR REVIEW" magazine. The lower photo shows the actual two-page article of our very first GTO/BUICK HEAVEN event in the January issue 1989 of Muscle Car Review. In the first page (lower left), you see a young me along side our then 19-year-old son, Darrell in front of Eileen's 1968 GTO (which became Darrell's GTO.) The lower photo shows some of the Grand Nationals lined up on our neighbor's property. The photo on the lower right shows some of the GTOs lined up on the lawn in front of our house.
PHOTO 3 - In the April 1987 issue of MUSCLE CAR REVIEW, Paul did an in-depth article on the upcoming new GNX along side the new 1987 Grand National. This was one of the first automotive magazines to do an article on the new limited production GNX. The photo shows the cover on the top left, and the other photos show some of the pages from the article.
PHOTO 4 - Shows the 3 GTO books Paul did - PONTIAC GTO RESTORATION GUIDE 1964-1972 (co-authored with Chuck Roberts), GTO RECOGNITION GUIDE, and the Motorbooks International GTO MUSCLE CAR COLOR HISTORY books. Fortunately, I did have him autograph the two GTO books he wrote by himself. The top photo shows his autograph in the GTO RECOGNITION GUIDE, "To Dennis, This copy's for you, buddy. I hope you enjoy it. Paul Zazarine April '86."
Interesting enough, last week we did hear from one of our old-time GTO customers who did drive up from South Carolina for our first GTO/BUICK event and remembered buying the Pontiac GTO Restoration Guide. At the time I had told him since both Paul and Chuck were at our event, he should get them to autograph it, which he did! Needless to say, he is one of the few that have a first edition autographed by both Paul and Chuck.

UPDATE - There will be a Memorial held to celebrate Paul's life. His wife, Alexis, wanted everyone to know that all are welcome.

A WORD ABOUT AUCTIONS -
In the next three months you will see many of the large collectible auctions in the southwest and on the east coast. I have a long-time friend that sold his 1957 Chevrolet on ebay 2 or 3 years ago. It had some unique features he had done to it and several things that still needed to be done. Interesting enough, he has now seen it on ebay being resold in different parts of the country at least three or four times!
It made me think - wouldn't it be nice for prospective buyers to have some method to track collectible cars at auctions. It would be nice to be able to see the history of the number of auctions a certain car/truck had been to in the last dozen years? Better yet, to see what they actually sold for at that auction. It could be similar to systems they have in place for tracking the history of used cars for service and possible accidents.
Let's face it, some of these cars just get bounced from auction to auction and never get enjoyed by an owner.
