MOLLY'S MEMORIAL SERVICE -
One of our California customers, Lee Westrope, was able to attend Molly's Memorial Service with his GNX #163, which was one of the display vehicles featured on a red carpet display in the church parking lot. According to Lee, Retired General Motors Motorsports Chief, Herb Fishel, was one of the guest speakers.
Lee emailed us and said, "Services were EXCELLENT. It made you feel like he was still here. I understand what people saw in him, everyone said he never met anyone who wasn't his friend. Herb Fishel spoke, and he was very interesting, Here are a few pics from the display. Many thanks for allowing me to be a part of this. I feel it was something I needed to do. Sincere Thanks, Lee Westrope"
In a follow-up email, he said, "Yes that was my GNX, #163, I felt honored to be able to show my appreciation to such a legend! On the slideshow they presented at the services, a couple pictures were of you and Molly, taken at one of your Reunions. I'm sure there are times if you wonder "is all this worth it?" - please believe me, we (GN/GNX owners) really appreciate what you do and stand for! You are welcome to use any of the pics as you see fit. Many thanks for helping me to be a small part of his services."
We are glad he had the opportunity to show our respect for Molly from the whole Buick community.

BY THE NUMBERS FROM CHINA -
Although it's been mentioned before, China is the biggest buyer of the new Buicks. According to an article I read this weekend in my local newspaper, China is what saved Buick from suffering the same fate as Saturn and Pontiac!
In the first three months of this year Buick sold 32,136 in the U.S. In China, it's almost 4 times as many in the same time frame; 121,972. With that kind of numbers, they say the design for its new Buick models will have the Chinese clientele in mind.
The average Chinese buyer is 37 years old. The average age of the U.S. buyer for a Buick recently dropped from 72 to 65 years old.
I think it is interesting that in the Buick ads on TV they compare the new Buick models to the Lexus. Ironically, Molly who designed the Grand National, also designed the Lexus logo. It's a small world after all!

AFTERMARKET LOW PROFILE V6 BLACK CRINKLE FINISH
VALVE COVERS (2) KIT
Made by TA Performance, these aluminum machined valve covers feature the Power Six logo and the word "BUICK" machined into the top of each valve cover.
These valve covers fit all stock 1984-1987 Turbo Regals 3.8 V6 engines. Covers are specifically designed to clear roller rockers and stock rockers on all stock and TA Performance cylinder heads, while providing plenty of clearance to the AC box on the passenger's side of the engine.
Kit comes with 8 new allen head bolts, 2 new grommets for the valve covers and 2 new K&N breathers.
When adding oil, you simply remove one of the K&N breathers on either valve cover.
NOTE - These valve covers will NOT fit 198 or 225 V6 engines or the Stage 2 Buick heads. In addition to fitting the stock heads, these will also fit the TA Performance cylinder heads.
NOTE - You would need to purchase a pair of valve cover gaskets (KPP #7060). These machined valve covers do have a lip to keep the valve cover gaskets in place.
An excellent upgrade to replace the plain aluminum valve covers on any 1984-1987 Turbo Regal.

GOOD NEWS ON ANOTHER NEW PART IN THE WORKS -
One of the parts in the works for late spring delivery is the factory-style HEADERS for the 1986-1987 Turbo Regals. We expect to also have the driver's side alone available as well. They will be made from 409 stainless. As delivery time draws closer, we will have a special introductory price to determine initial sales response.
We have recently been informed that the mounting flange will be changed to accept the various style cylinder heads.
Watch for updates on this project.

GM PARTS UPDATE -
It appears that the GM supply of the factory 1986-1987 GM factory original molded boost line kits are dwindling and may already have disappeared from GM's warehouses inventory. We currently have a decent supply of them.
This is a very critical part, for any 1986-1987 Turbo Regal, since it is needed to control boost. They have 3 specially formed hoses with a special size diameter T in between two of the molded hoses. These also have the GM wording on them.
Over a period of time, heat can cause the hoses to swell and crack. While they last, we have them available for $44.95 plus shipping, Part #6644. Supplies are limited.

Our daughter-in-law Carrie has committed to a 60-mile, 3-day walk in October to raise money for Cancer research. Many of you have met her at our events. She needs to have $2300 raised by July 1st. Susan G. Komen 3-Day for the Cure™ Walk - Carrie Kirban
I have taken on an incredible challenge. On October 15-17, 2010, I'll be walking 60 miles over the course of three days, camping out at night with thousands of other women and men taking this journey with me. I have committed to raise $2300 to be able to participate in the walk. The money I need to raise goes to cancer research and I pay for my expenses separately.
It's for an event called the Susan G. Komen 3-Day for the Cure™. Net proceeds from the Komen 3-Day for the Cure are invested in community-based breast health programs and breast cancer research.
You never know who this disease will strike next. My prayers go out to all of my friends and family that have been affected with this disease. Let's find a Cure! To make a donation, go to - The3Day.org - Click on Donate and search for my personal fundraising page under Carrie Kirban.

MEMORIES OF MY YOUTH - PART 7
This week's story is not a memory. I remember more of one that in some small way honors my Dad.
Most wage earners during their lifetime may have three or four different jobs or. My Dad, at a rough count, had over 15 different businesses. To my knowledge, once he got out of the Navy, he never really worked for anyone. A trait, that I can also lay claim to, having never worked for anyone after my three-year stint in the Army.
By the way, after that one-year tour in Vietnam, I did pull what I believe to be the very best duty in the Army. I got stationed at the Philadelphia Induction Center at 401 North Broad Street. This was great duty since I could live off base, and it basically was a 8-to-5 job. This meant I got to go home every night. My job was to give tests to incoming recruits and also give the "going away" speech as they prepared to get on the bus or train to take them to basic training.
Although my Dad never talked much about it, his first business venture in the early 1950s in Philadelphia was an advertising agency. He mostly did advertising promotions for Savings and Loan banks and fund appeal letters for Churches and religious groups.
However, he did have one client with a product many of you will recognize today. At the time, he was the original advertising agency for the new Slinky that was introduced just after the World War II in 1946. According to notes I found in my Dad's stuff, he actually boxed the original Slinky at their dining room table with a group of friends. That led to Dad getting the advertising account. At some point my Dad designed one of the early Slinky boxes the Slinky was packaged in. He later worked on the Slinky Dog advertising, as you can see in Photo 3 and 4.
It was sometime around 1955-1956 when the company decided they wanted a big New York advertising agency, so they dropped my Dad's company.
PHOTO 3 - Shows the original artwork for the very first design of the "Slinky Dog." In the bottom right corner you may be able to read my Dad's company name, "KIRBAN ASSOCIATES" and his address. We stumbled onto this original artwork from the early 1950s among the items he had in storage. The Slinky Dog is still well known today, especially since it was featured in the Toy Story movies.
PHOTO 4 - Shows one flyer on how the James Industries grew quickly from 1946 through 1955. The second flyer shows the new Slinky Dog for 1955 for the price of $2. We found these in my Dad's files, since his advertising agency handled design work on these two advertisements.
I hope you enjoyed these stories from my past.
Next week we will do one final story related to my Dad.
Again, I would like to thank you for the many emails and cards we received concerning the passing of my father. By doing these recent weekly stories, it has helped me remember so many of the good things and unique things my Dad did during his lifetime. This Saturday is his Memorial service, which I am sure will be a tough time for me.
