2-23-11 Inner Circle

Greetings Turbo Regal Inner Circle Members - 02-23-2011

In quick review, we have pointed out that 1987 Turbo Regals had an early part number alternator, 1101 183, and the later ones had the part number 1101 349 both followed by the 120A identification on the first line. Based on the original cores my source has, listing the dates under each number, it appears that Buick used the 1101 183 number up through April of 1987. My source has some 1101 349 showing the earliest date also in April of 1987. He shows nothing past April of 1987 with the early 1101 183 number for the 1987 120A alternators.

So, even though we are currently offering only 1101 349 original stamped alternators, we can possibly help those of you that have a 1987 Turbo Regal that was built prior to late April 1987 with the earlier part number.

My source also has discovered in his collection of cores probably the rarest of date-stamped 120A alternators. This would be the ones for the limited production 1989 Turbo Trans Am.

The importance of date codes related to the U.S. performance car market is probably most tied into the Corvette market. From there the importance of date codes and original stamped part numbers has trickled down to the other U.S. muscle cars.

I know this from firsthand experience with our beginnings in the GTO business back in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Back then, we had a real good connection with a local company that rebuilt carburetors. The quadrajet was introduced on the GTO 400 engine back in 1967 and from then on they were uniquely stamped depending on the application. The later Ram Air versions and the 455 HO versions carburetors were highly sought after by owners, even back then.

To my knowledge, the very first 1:24 scale plastic model based on the Grand National was released in 1988 by Monogram. Monogram is located in Illinois, and actually used a local owner's Grand National for the project. I remember years ago having the owner as a customer. (If anyone has more information on this car, please let me know).

Since that initial release, either by request or pressure from GM or the Corvette segment, the box design went through several changes.

PHOTO 1 - Shows an original 1988 Monogram Buick Grand National 1:24 scale model. It has two references to the Corvette on the top of the box. The one tag line below the car reads "FASTEST U.S. PRODUCTION CAR" and in the background you can clearly make out the red nose of a similar year Corvette.

PHOTO 2 - Shows the box design that went under major changes. All references about the fastest U.S. production car, is no longer on the cover of the box. The Corvette is no longer shown behind the Grand National. This release is dated 1991. There had been other production releases of this model over the years.

PHOTO 3 - We show two sides of the box from the first released version. It has a 1988 copyright. In that description, shown on the top photo it reads, "Designed for 220+ mph race cars, the Buick turbocharged V-6 engine makes the Grand National the fastest production car made in the U.S. In 1/24 scale, this model is 8-3/8" long (21.3 cm). It's molded in black with clear and plated parts and has detailed chassis, interior and engine. Hood opens. May be painted to match photos on box. Cement and paint not include."

PHOTO 4 - We show two sides of the box from the later version with a 1991 copyright year. As you might expect, the description on the side of the box we show on the top photo has been altered slightly and now reads "Designed for the 220+ mph race cars, the turbocharged Buick V-6 engine makes the Grand National one of the fastest production cars made in the U.S. This model is 8-3/8" long (21.3 cm). It's molded in black with clear and plated parts and has detailed chassis, interior and engine. Hood opens."

You can see, although subtle, someone either strongly suggested or insisted that the references about the GN being the fastest U.S. Production car made in the U.S.A. be deleted. My guess, I think it probably did not sit too well with the GM or the Corvette camps.

In looking back, it really is not a big deal, as our cars are firmly established for what they accomplished as being the fastest U.S. Production car in 1987. Obviously, the Corvette is the "crown jewel" in the GM lineup and as such reins supreme as the fastest U.S. Production car throughout its history. But as history has shown. Buick provided a small hiccup and took the crown in 1987!

Yes, in addition to personally owning a 1987 Turbo-T, sitting next to it in our building is our 2000 Corvette fixed roof coupe. Both share a common trait, very few options and the lightest example for their model. Our Corvette only has 4 options.

On these two versions, Monogram did keep the original Illinois license plate in the kit. This is a nice gesture to the individual who provided the Grand National for the mock up. I have no idea how many different release dates and versions Monogram would eventually make of this particular model. The fact they did several versions of packaging indicates that it was a highly popular seller for them.

We just received word earlier last week from Molly's wife Terry, about this upcoming event in honor of Molly.

The first annual "Ride On Molly" Memorial Ride has been scheduled to pay tribute to Molly Sanders and all that he meant to so many people. In addition, since Molly left his 10-year-old daughter, Brooke, before he and his wife, Terry, could fully provide for her college education, the ride will also serve to add funds to Brooke's college education fund.

The memorial gathering is centered around motorcycling because it's what Molly loved so much. However, non-riders are equally welcome to participate in this event and may drive their vehicles of the four-wheel variety. The route will take us over many of Molly’s favorite roads and to three of his favorite destinations.

The "Ride On Molly" ride will take place on the weekend of April 30th and May 1st, 2011, which is near the first anniversary date of Molly's passing. Attendees may participate either one or both days.

Due to the generosity of the event sponsor and other sponsors, select meals and commemorative ride T-shirts will be provided at no charge to the participants.

The Ride Headquarters and Starting Point is Temecula Creek Inn in Temecula, California.

Grand Marshal for the "Ride On Molly" ride is world famous off road race driver, Ivan "Iron Man" Stewart, winner of 82 victories, 4 SCORE World Championships and 3 MTEG Championships.

Please see the section titled "Register/Donate" for further details, directions to the Temecula Creek Inn, and the registration form to participate in the event.

We look forward to a great ride event to honor and remember a truly wonderful individual.

Please check back on this site periodically for any revisions.

Signed - The "Ride On Molly" event committee.

We have heard from a couple people that have viewed the photos on the website. Because these have to be low-resolution photos to work on the Inner Circle segments on the website, any photos of text don't appear clear when enlarged. This is a problem when you are trying to see numbers, such as those on the VIN labels or pages from Options booklet. Also, because of photo reproduction and computer screen variations, the colors may not be true to the actual product or photo.

If you would like to have us email you any photo at the higher resolution for viewing, just email us and we will email them to you. Be sure to be specific on which pictures you want to see - Reference Inner Circle date and photo number 1, 2, 3 or 4 - [email protected]

2011 BUICK PERFORMANCE GROUP - JULY 29th - 31st, 2011 - HEBRON, OHIO -

The Buick Performance Group event will feature the Turbo Buick "step children" the T-Types and Pontiac's unclaimed child the Turbo Trans Am. The event is at National Trail Raceway in Hebron, Ohio.

They have secured Scott Kelly to attend, as well as Denny Manner, Joe Guzek, Dave Roland, Ron Yuile. Denny has also contacted Tom Wallace in hopes that he will attend. The people mentioned have also contacted other retired Buick Engineers, including Mike Doble to have them attend. There will be displays and "tech" talks, so it should be very informative. I don't think there has ever been that many Turbo G-body Engineers in one place at one time. This is one event you do not want to miss this summer!
