7-20-11 Inner Circle

Greetings Turbo Regal Inner Circle Members - 07-20-2011

While going through some of my old files, I discovered 3 unusual pictures I had related to Turbo Buicks.

PHOTO 1 - This photo I remember quite clearly. Back in the late 1990s, I had taken a train to Florida to buy a 1987 Turbo-T. Unfortunately, I did not plan ahead, and didn't take any music to enjoy on the two-day drive back to Pennsylvania. This car still had the simple Plain-Jane am radio, which as many of you know, gets terrible reception and offered very limited choices.

PHOTO 2 - Shows a brand new 1986-1987 Turbo Regal under-the-hood pad. If there was ever any doubt that mistakes were not made by various parts suppliers, this photo provides proof that mistakes were made. I should have kept this under-the-hood pad, but I sold it. It would have made a nice conversation piece on a show car!

PHOTO 3 - What is unusual about this new car invoice, is the fact it was a brand new 1987 Grand National (Buick) and it was sold by a Dodge dealership. How this happened I have no idea. Since I have this copy of this sales invoice, I must have gotten it with one of the Grand Nationals I sold. It shows the buyer traded in a 1986 Monte Carlo and got a $10,000 trade allowance.

PHOTO 4 - This was an original display at the Muscle Car Madness York Reunion on July 8-9, 2011. It's an original homemade engine hoist using a 4' by 4" as the main crossbeam. If you were a teenager during the 1950s and 1960s, you'll remember that this was the popular homemade method for yanking your engine out of your car.

It brought back memories to me, because in 1965 as a senior in high school I had to pull the engine out of my 1956 Crown Victoria Ford. I knew I could not do it at home as we lived in a pretty nice neighborhood. One neighbor would call the cops if I so much as parked one of my old cars in the street overnight. Without giving it a second thought, I hooked a chain hoist on a sturdy tree at one of the entrances to my high school, which was on school property. I then pulled my car under the tree and over a period of a week, I removed the engine and put in a rebuilt V8. As I sat in some of my classes, I could actually look out the window and see my car. As one might imagine, I was in no danger of being near the top academically as a senior. At the time, I never gave it a second thought to check with the school for permission, and no one ever said anything.

My girlfriend Eileen (now my wife) would bring me dinner as she lived next to the elementary school that was about one block away. I was fortunate enough to have a second car, a 1950 Ford business coupe, to drive. Years later when my two of my younger sisters attended that same high school, they told me the chain still hung from the tree that I used.

Not something you could try today at any school property without getting into major trouble. With liability issues, this could never happen today.

It seems today many TV shows center around the reality theme. Some reality shows fair better than others. My wife and I like "America's Got Talent" and my wife also enjoys "Dancing with the Stars."

Here are 2 of my ideas for possible reality TV shows that are more automotive based.

The first general idea would be to pick two or four used car sales guys that do the general appraising of trade-ins and put them in a small town in another state, where they do not know anyone. Give each a budget of $500 to spend for a car and see which of the contestants can buy the cheapest car and travel the furthest on spending just $500 total. They would have a time limit to make the purchase and begin their journey.

My second idea, would be pick four of the top notch old-time mechanics. Give each of them a car that was last run when it was parked for at least 2-5 years and see which contestant gets the car running and everything working with the least expense with basic hand tools. Again, it would have to take place in a town where the contestant has no outside help. Rules for either idea could be fine tuned, but these are my general ideas for two automotive based reality shows.

So, any TV writers reading this, remember where you got the idea from!

We will soon be carrying the Alky control kits for the 1986-1987 Turbo Regals. One sure fire method to beat the low octane problems in the fuel.

You could hit the triple play! Our Reunion event Saturday August 20th, 10 am until 3 pm. Travel to nearby Perkasie for their "Under the Stars" event, which runs from 5 pm until 9:30 pm that same Saturday. Then Sunday on to Coopersburg Collector Car Show in nearby Coopersburg. That event draws 400-plus cars.

So, in the space of 2 days, you could hit 3 major car events all within 20 miles of each other and all 3 completely different formats. Ours is a Reunion non-judged event, Perkasie is held at night on the main streets in town, and Sunday is held at a beautiful park and is a judged event. We will be with Linda at the Coopersburg event.

At our Reunion event, we will have an array of various items you can purchase for Linda to sign and a limited number of custom-made Reunion plaques to mark this unique event.

This is a free event. All we ask you do is be sure to email me personally with the number of people attending in your group. This will help us figure out how many donuts and Reunion plaques to order. Email me - [email protected]

We have heard from a couple people that have viewed the photos on the website. Because these have to be low-resolution photos to work on the Inner Circle segments on the website, any photos of text don't appear clear when enlarged. This is a problem when you are trying to see numbers, such as those on the VIN labels or pages from Options booklet. Also, because of photo reproduction and computer screen variations, the colors may not be true to the actual product or photo.

If you would like to have us email you any photo at the higher resolution for viewing, just email us and we will email them to you. Be sure to be specific on which pictures you want to see - Reference Inner Circle date and photo number 1, 2, 3 or 4 - [email protected]

Got any turbo parts you are not using? Why not cash them in for parts you need with a Letter of Credit. Simply email me a list - [email protected]

Also, we are still buying dead or partially dead 1984-1987 Turbo Regals under $4,000 that are within 250 to 350 miles of our location.

JULY 29th & 31st, 2011
National Trail Raceway, Hebron, Ohio

The Buick Performance Group event will feature the Turbo Buick "step children" the T-Types and Pontiac's unclaimed child the Turbo Trans Am. The event is at National Trail Raceway in Hebron, Ohio.

They have secured Scott Kelly to attend, as well as Denny Manner, Joe Guzek, Dave Roland, Ron Yuile. Denny has also contacted Tom Wallace in hopes that he will attend. The people mentioned have also contacted other retired Buick Engineers, including Mike Doble to have them attend. There will be displays and "tech" talks, so it should be very informative. I don't think there has ever been that many Turbo G-body Engineers in one place at one time. This is one event you do not want to miss this summer!

We will be attending this major event that entire weekend set up as a vendor. So, bring us any parts you want to trade in. We do not need powermaster cores or steering wheel cores. We have also been asked to judge the original Turbo Regal class at this event. Richard Clark will be helping me as well. Along with Richard, Anthony Petridis will be assisting me as well. I think Richard has figured a method to gauge the amount of new car smell that remains in original cars!

Be sure to stop by our vendor spot at the Buick Performance Group event, as we are having a special custom-made gift done to give to Richard Clark that you will want to see. A second similar version will be available for sale for that Turbo owner that thinks they have everything for their shop or garage. It is definitely one-of-a-kind!

Information for the event can be found here -
