2-3-10 Inner Circle

Greetings Turbo Regal Inner Circle Members - 02-03-10

We received several emails from our readers about our first Lear Siegler article last week (01-27-2010).

As I suspected, several wanted to buy my custom Lear Siegler office chair! I am afraid it is not for sale. I always keep the rare, unusual or unique items, and this is definitely one of those collectibles. Perhaps it plants the idea in your head that you can do likewise with any Turbo Regal bucket seat. Office chairs are cheap. You just need to make a cross brace to affix to the office chair portion and match up to the holes in the bucket seat frame. It's a neat item for your workshop or office.

Keep in mind as I stated before, not much appears in print on the Lear Siegler seats, nor do I claim to be an expert on the subject.

By far the most popular Grand National to have the Lear Siegler seats is the 1982-1/2 Grand National. I must confess, I have never owned one of these cars. I have had several of the LeSabre Grand Nationals, which I find more appealing and unique. We will eventually be doing an article on both of these models.

Unlike the more popular black and grey Pallex cloth Grand National seats, the "power six" logo or "turbo six" logo is NOT embroidered in the headrest, but rather in the section just below the headrest!

Another interesting thing we discovered about the logo is some were orange and red (like the fender emblems) and they also made some that just embroidered the outline of the logo! If that was not confusing enough, on the logo that was just outlined, the arrow portion of the logo lapped UNDER the other portion, which is in reverse of the standard emblem where the arrow goes OVER the other portion!

PHOTO 1 - Shows the 2 versions of the turbo-six logos. Notice the design of the logo on the colored version (on the left in this photo) loops OVER the downstroke; it is from the 1984 Grand National. The outlined version (on the right in this photo) is from a 1982-1/2 Grand National and loops UNDER the downstroke.

As several customers have pointed out to me in emails, one downside of the Lear Siegler seats is that the cloth is subject to wear problems and the internals sometimes come through the bolster portions. Had they been all leather and had more padding between the internal springs, it may have slowed down these problems.

I never did a weight comparison. However, it's reasonable to suspect the Lear Siegler bucket seats with their added features weighs more than the later Pallex cloth Grand National seats. This would be due in part to the bolster controls and the internal mechanisms required to operate them, plus the pull-out front cushion on the Lear Siegler seats.

Perhaps even more rare than the cloth/leather combination of the Lear Siegler seats is the all-cloth Lear Siegler version. This was a $600 upgrade that Buick offered. Like the leather/cloth combo, this version featured a very soft cloth that did not hold up well over time unless extreme care was taken.

PHOTO 2 - Shows a typical passenger's side all-cloth Lear Siegler seat. You can see the upper and lower control knobs and the split line on the base cushion, which allows that section to extend forward.

Since these all-cloth Lear Siegler seats were a $600 option were probably rare when they were new in the 1984-1985 Turbo Regals, they are even more so today!

According to my reference material, the Lear Siegler seats were not offered in a regular Regal, although you could order regular cloth bucket seats in a regular V6 or V8 Regal. An example of that would be the one we showed the other week with the half-padded roof and T-Tops, Inner Circle 01-20-2010.

One step making any Lear Siegler seat even more rare would be to have the optional power seat feature. In my photo collection, I have one such photo. In real life, I have only seen three of these at the most.

PHOTO 3 - Shows a driver's side Lear Siegler power seat. Because of the location of the bolster adjustment knob, they could not use the standard power seat panel that the regular bucket seat utilized. Instead, it was a small plastic panel that housed the 6-way switch. As in most cases because of its location, the center plastic button in this photo is broken off.

PHOTO 4 - Shows a typical Lear Siegler leather/cloth combination rear seat. I have no idea if they used the same cloth on the front all-cloth version Lear Siegler bucket seats that they did on the rear seats on the Turbo Regals with that option.

One customer did email us that owned a black 1984 T-Type with the Lear Siegler seats. With around 80,000 miles on the car, the springs are pushing up through the leather/cloth on both seats.

Another customer reported when he ordered his 1986 T-Type, he ordered the Lear Siegler seat option. They were all cloth. Unfortunately, he never got them since the option was discontinued prior to production of his car. He had to wait six months, apparently due to California emissions issues with the turbo engines.

For those of you lucky enough to have this option in your Turbo Regal, a great source for replacement seat material is - gbodyparts.com.

Next week - A look at the 1982-1/2 Grand National.

In the last Inner Circle (01-27-2010) we mentioned a 1969 Trans Am we passed on buying, which today would fetch big money.

We heard from a couple of our customers with related stories...

Rich mentioned that back in 1965 he worked at a small Ford dealership as a parts manager. The dealership was selling their Ford Thunderbolt, the second fastest one on the east coast. He could have purchased it for $2,600, complete with a second engine! At age 21, recently married, and making payments on his new 1965 Ford Galaxie convertible...he could not afford it. He thinks they are now worth about $250,000 for a nice original. Who knew?

On a similar note, I remember buying my only 426 Hemi car in the late 1970s. It was a 1967 Plymouth GTX with just 22,000 miles. Even the clock worked. I paid what my friends thought was crazy money back then - $5,000. With the current octane back then, it was impossible to drive it hard without it pinging because of the fuel. I sold it later that same summer for $9000 thinking that was a moon shot for the car.

I could fill an entire Inner Circle on the cars that have passed through our hands. Most cars I have owned over the years have been performance cars and have increased substantially in value over the years.

For those of you that can remember back to February 3rd in 1959, you will recall it as "The Day the Music Died" in a cornfield in Clear Lake, Iowa. On February 3, 1959, a small plane crash near Clear Lake, Iowa killed 3 American rock and roll musicians: Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and J.P. "The Big Bopper" Richardson, as well as the pilot, Roger Peterson. The day was later called "The Day the Music Died" by Don McLean in his song "American Pie."

All the singers that lost their lives that fateful day were on their way to rock and roll stardom. Personally, I never heard a Buddy Holly song I didn't like. He may have not had the typical rock and roll look, but his voice was unique.

I remember on one of my trips years ago, I was picking up a car out that way. I actually stopped along the interstate by a sign that read "Clear Lake" and took a picture of it.

Price is $849 plus shipping.

1986-1987 Turbo Regal -

The upper molded radiator hose is unique for 1986-1987 Turbo Regals only and is usually not a readily available stock radiator hose in local auto stores.

The factory GM hose has been discontinued.

This Dayco hose is 100% identical in size (approximately 25-1/2") and has the same molded shape as the original. It just doesn't have the GM wording on the hose. Dayco is an original supplier to GM.

An excellent replacement for a critical part. We recommend you keep one as a spare in your trunk.

Aftermarket DAYCO Molded Upper Radiator Hose $24.95

KIRBAN OPEN HOUSE - SATURDAY, APRIL 17th - 9 am - 3 p.m.

As part of welcoming spring, once again we will be having an Open House on Saturday, April 17th, 2010, Rain or Shine!

Pete will have a lot of used parts for sale, and I have many tagged and bagged items for sale as well. As usual our granddaughter Devyn will be selling our used parts. She and her Mom (our daughter-in-law) will have a bake sale to raise money for the Walk for Cancer that Carrie is doing later this fall.

Paul Castle is coming from Illinois, and our good friend Jason Maxfield will be here from Canada. Also, Richard Clark hopes to be able to come as well. This is a great time to bring any used parts that you do not need to trade or cash in for items you want.

We will have available the new Linda Vaughn "Miss Hurst" project available as well as several other unique items.

Here is a link to the KIRBAN OPEN HOUSE information on our web site:

I have three very extremely rare items for sale. Of these two items, only 2 exist and that's all that will ever exist. The other item, only 4 exist and no others will ever exist. They are brand new. Don personally signed them and I have photos to go with them. They are not cheap. They are off his 001 Challenger Drag Pak car, which is valued at over $75,000. If you are interested, email me - direct [email protected] - for further details and prices. We may have one on display at our Open House.

Confirming information from Richard Clark... I was able to get an update on a couple projects he's working on.

He has the directions almost done for the GNX exhaust system. Parts are on hand and boxes are currently being made for this project.

Here are the specs on the GNX exhaust systems -

1987 GNX & 1986-1987 GRAND NATIONAL -

NOTE - The GNX reproduction exhaust system will ONLY fit real GNXs and any 1986-1987 Turbo Regals that have been fitted with the reproduction GNX rear suspension systems. It will not fit regular Turbo Regals!

Both exhaust systems are made from 304 stainless and use the same highly polished center-to-center mufflers, which come with each kit.

Both systems are true 2-1/2" diameter system throughout, unlike the factory, which reduces down in several places to 2-1/4". Each pipe is mandrel bent. Tailpipes are angled cut to match the originals and exit exactly in the same area as the originals. All new stainless guillotine clamps are included. The hangers, which secure the system on the tailpipes, are not visible. Each system is trial fitted in a fixture to insure a perfect fit for the end consumer.

Each exhaust system is dropped shipped from North Carolina in a single box weighing approximately 50-55 lbs.

Richard Clark has developed these two projects, so you can be assured of fit and quality throughout.

These are excellent exhaust system upgrades.

We have several of the Pypes exhaust systems in stock for immediate delivery.

One of the parts in the works for late spring delivery is the factory-style HEADERS for the 1986-1987 Turbo Regals. We expect to also have the driver's side alone available as well. They will be made from 409 stainless. As delivery time draws closer, we will have a special introductory price to determine initial sales response. We have recently been informed that the mounting flange will be changed to accept the various style cylinder heads.

Watch for updates on this project.

Got any Turbo parts you are not using? Why not cash them in for parts you need with a Letter of Credit. Simply email me a list - [email protected] - Also we are still buying dead or partially dead 1984-1987 Turbo Regals under $4,000 that are within 250 to 350 miles of our location.

It appears that the GM supply of the factory 1986-1987 GM factory original molded boost line kits are dwindling and may already have disappeared from GM's warehouses inventory. We currently have a decent supply of them.

This is a very critical part, for any 1986-1987 Turbo Regal, since it is needed to control boost. They have 3 specially formed hoses with a special size diameter T in between two of the molded hoses. These also have the GM wording on them.

Over a period of time, heat can cause the hoses to swell and crack. While they last, we have them available for $44.95 plus shipping, Part #6644. Supplies are limited.

Here is a link to the Boost Line Kit on our web site:

We have the 1986-1987 Turbo Regal - GM Air Flow Duct (from turbo to MAF sensor), Part #6536 in stock for $61.95. Just a few left now.

We still have a few brand new GM right hand side marker lights with the blackout package. This is the marker light that attaches to the side of the headlight bezels. Price is $61.95 plus shipping.

If you are interested in any of these parts, you must call our office to purchase it. Some of these close out items are just about gone from the GM parts system.

The following part is now discontinued:

6768 - 1978-1987 Regal -
Windshield A-Pillar 2-5/8" Gauge Holder (We still carry the other versions)

Our daughter-in-law Carrie has committed to a 60-mile, 3-day walk in October to raise money for Cancer research. Many of you have met her at our events. She needs to have $2300 raised by July 1st. If you would like to help with this fundraiser for a good cause, here is the information and a message from Carrie.

Susan G. Komen 3-Day for the Cure™ Walk - Carrie Kirban

I have taken on an incredible challenge. On October 15-17, 2010, I'll be walking 60 miles over the course of three days, camping out at night with thousands of other women and men taking this journey with me. I have committed to raise $2300 to be able to participate in the walk. The money I need to raise goes to cancer research and I pay for my expenses separately.

It's for an event called the Susan G. Komen 3-Day for the Cure™. Net proceeds from the Komen 3-Day for the Cure are invested in community-based breast health programs and breast cancer research.

You never know who this disease will strike next. My prayers go out to all of my friends and family that have been affected with this disease. Let's find a Cure!

It would probably be an upset, but it would be nice for the Saints to win the Super Bowl finally. Also be a major boost for that part of the country. At the very least, I hope it's a close high-scoring game.
