2-10-10 Inner Circle

Greetings Turbo Regal Inner Circle Members - 02-10-10 - (Sent out on 02-09-2010)

NOTE - We are expecting a big snowstorm to move in tonight and tomorrow. Since we may not be able to get into the office tomorrow, we are sending out this Inner Circle one day early. Stay warm wherever you are!

Some information on the 1982 Grand National - the one that started the Turbo Regal craze!

Like the last topic we covered, I am not an expert on this particular year Grand National. (Never even owned one). Very little Buick information exists on this model as well. For many years, most Turbo Regal owners believed this was the most rare Grand National of all. They would only be partly right, if they said the most rare in the Regal body format.

From the information I have found, they made a total of 215 of the 1982 Regal style Grand National. Since the car was introduced in February of 1982, most articles refer to it as a 1982-1/2 Grand National.

The Buick Grand National that beats it out as the lowest production, is the 1986 LeSabre Grand National. Records show that 117 or 119 of the 1986 LeSabre Grand National version were produced. We have actually owned two of them.

Part of the reason there is not much is known about the LeSabre version is because most of the production models ended up in the southeastern part of the country.

Getting back to the 1982 Grand Nationals... Unlike some of the other GM first production models (example - the 1964 GTO or the 1953 Corvette), the 1982 Grand National has never enjoyed much success in the way of escalating values.

Two powerplants were offered, the 4.1 V-6 four-barrel and just a handful of 3.8 V-6 Turbos. The seats, of course, were the Lear Siegler style, which we covered in the previous Inner Circle (02-03-2010).

1982 Grand National can probably be compared to the Mustang II Cobra that featured decals on the side and was mostly a cosmetic appearance package.

The best, as we all realize, was yet to come with the 1984-1985 Turbo Regals and the later 1986-1987 Turbo Regals. Of course, the crowning touch was the GNX.

Any literature from Buick related to the 1982 Grand National would be quite rare to find today. We have pictured what we have in our private collection.

PHOTO 1 - Shows basic Press Kit folder cover on the left and the first page of a 2-page letter that accompanied the Press Kit. The letter is dated February 10, 1982. It describes how this distinctive Grand National will be used to help Buick dealers capitalize on the success of the Buick nameplate on the NASCAR circuit.

PHOTO 2 - Shows the full-color side/front view of the 1982 Grand National that came in the original 1982 Grand National Press Kit. It appears this shot was done in a studio since there is no background in the photo. Personally, I think the color combination they used on the first year was a winner.

PHOTO 3 - Shows the black and white photo I have that came in the original 1982 Grand National Press Kit.

Here is a portion of the information from a Buick Dealer Service Information Bulletin dated March 1983, which says -

Early in 1982 Buick offered a special limited edition Regal "Grand National" to commemorate the numerous victories in the Nascar Winston Cup Grand National Series, which brought Buick the manufacturer's trophy.

This special build will require a listing of specific parts for service. The special paint information is:

Light Silver Gray Firemist Code 90
Dupont 45814 R&M 98160 Ditzler 3135.

Charcoal Gray Code 84
Dupont B8012 R&M 11421 Ditzler 3223

Red Accent Stripe 3M Scotchcal Color 66

From this first Grand National paint scheme, you can see how the black and gray, WH1 combination came about in the later years Turbo Regals.

The following information is a full reprint from a BUICK NEW PRESS RELEASE dated February 10, 1982 -

DAYTONA BEACH, FL. (February 10) - Buick today introduced the Grand National Regal, a limited edition of the aerodynamic Regal Coupe - the car that brought Buick the Manufacurer's Trophy in the 1981 NASCAR Winston Cup Grand National series.

"The distinctive Grand National will be used to help Buick dealers capitalize on the success of the Buick nameplate on the NASCAR circuit," according to Lloyd E. Reuss, Buick general manager and a General Motors vice-president.

"Buick has undergone a subtle, but significant change of image over the past few years, with more youthful, contemporary products that feature increasing technical sophistication," Reuss said. "The Grand National Regal will help to emphasize the idea that Buicks can be exciting, fun-to-drive cars."

The Grand National features a long list of regular production options, including a "T-"Top roof, in addition to special equipment not available on other Buicks.

The car has a specific paint scheme of light silver-gray firemist and charcoal gray, with bright red accent striping and screened "Buick" billboard lettering on the rear quarters. The worlds "Grand National" appear on the front fenders just ahead of the doors, with Buick's special "6" emblem positioned below.

(NOTE from Kirban - You may have noticed the typo in the paragraph above... it was actually wrong on the release - The sentence reads The worlds "Grand National" - it should be The words... )

Wheel opening and rocker panel moldings, and the front grille assembly are blacked out, and a front air dam and rear deck spoiler are included.

Inside, the Grand National has specific trim, including front bucket seats featuring wing cushion, wing back, lumbar support, and thigh support adjustments. Both front and rear seats are done in gray cloth with charcoal leather inserts. Also included are charcoal trim plates for the instrument panel, console and doors, and a leather-wrapped sport steering wheel. There is special instrument panel identification.

The Grand National powerplant is a 4.1 liter V-6 engine with four-barrel carburetor, rated at 125 horsepower at 4,000 r.p.m. Automatic transmission with console shift, a 3.23:1 rear axle ration, Gran Touring suspension and heavy-duty engine and transmission cooling are used.

Tires are Goodyear P-205/70R14 steel belted radial ply, with raised white letters. Wheels are styled aluminum.

Other specified options include air conditioning, cruise control, tilt steering column, electronically tuned AM/FM stereo radio with cassette tape player, instrument gauges, tungsten-halogen high beam headlamps, full-length operating console, power windows and door locks, and tinted glass.

Watch for The 1982-1/2 GRAND NATIONAL - PART TWO - Next Week

PHOTO 4 - As many of you know the eastern part of the U.S. got blasted with anywhere from just a few inches to 30 inches of snow. Our area got between 12-14 inches. If you ever doubted our son's ability at doing custom bodywork, take a look at what he and our granddaughter accomplished in less than 2 hours with readily available snow after plowing the driveway and a paint gun. He even reproduced the dash as well.

This gives new meaning to the idea of boating all year round in the winter climates. Adding to the scenery in their swim attire is our daughter-in-law Carrie (left) and her friend Jesse (right).

The top photo shows the "snowboat" and the bottom shows the actual boat they own that the snow sculpture was patterned after.

KIRBAN OPEN HOUSE - SATURDAY, APRIL 17th - 9 am - 3 p.m.

As part of welcoming spring, once again we will be having an Open House on Saturday, April 17th, 2010, Rain or Shine!

Pete will have a lot of used parts for sale, and I have many tagged and bagged items for sale as well. As usual our granddaughter Devyn will be selling our used parts. She and her Mom (our daughter-in-law) will have a bake sale to raise money for the Walk for Cancer that Carrie is doing later this fall.

Paul Castle is coming from Illinois, and our good friend Jason Maxfield will be here from Canada. Also, Richard Clark hopes to be able to come as well. This is a great time to bring any used parts that you do not need to trade or cash in for items you want.

We will have available the new Linda Vaughn "Miss Hurst" project available as well as several other unique items.

Here is a link to the KIRBAN OPEN HOUSE information on our web site:

I have three very extremely rare items for sale. Of these two items, only 2 exist and that's all that will ever exist. The other item, only 4 exist and no others will ever exist. They are brand new. Don personally signed them and I have photos to go with them. They are not cheap.

They are off his 001 Challenger Drag Pak car, which is valued at over $75,000.

If you are interested, email me - direct [email protected] - for further details and prices. We may have one on display at our Open House.

Confirming information from Richard Clark... I was able to get an update on a couple projects he's working on.

He has the directions almost done for the GNX exhaust system. Parts are on hand and boxes are currently being made for this project.

Here are the specs on the GNX exhaust systems -

NOTE - The GNX reproduction exhaust system will ONLY fit real GNXs and any 1986-1987 Turbo Regals that have been fitted with the reproduction GNX rear suspension systems. It will not fit regular Turbo Regals!

Both exhaust systems are made from 304 stainless and use the same highly polished center-to-center mufflers, which come with each kit.

Both systems are true 2-1/2" diameter system throughout, unlike the factory, which reduces down in several places to 2-1/4". Each pipe is mandrel bent. Tailpipes are angled cut to match the originals and exit exactly in the same area as the originals. All new stainless guillotine clamps are included. The hangers, which secure the system on the tailpipes, are not visible. Each system is trial fitted in a fixture to insure a perfect fit for the end consumer.

Each exhaust system is dropped shipped from North Carolina in a single box weighing approximately 50-55 lbs. Richard Clark has developed these two projects, so you can be assured of fit and quality throughout.

These are excellent exhaust system upgrades.

Here is a link to the Pypes Dual Exhaust System on our web site:

We have several of the Pypes exhaust systems in stock for immediate delivery.

One of the parts in the works for late spring delivery is the factory-style HEADERS for the 1986-1987 Turbo Regals. We expect to also have the driver's side alone available as well. They will be made from 409 stainless. As delivery time draws closer, we will have a special introductory price to determine initial sales response. We have recently been informed that the mounting flange will be changed to accept the various style cylinder heads.

Watch for updates on this project.

Got any Turbo parts you are not using? Why not cash them in for parts you need with a Letter of Credit. Simply email me a list - [email protected] -

Also we are still buying dead or partially dead 1984-1987 Turbo Regals under $4,000 that are within 250 to 350 miles of our location.

It appears that the GM supply of the factory 1986-1987 GM factory original molded boost line kits are dwindling and may already have disappeared from GM's warehouses inventory. We currently have a decent supply of them.

This is a very critical part, for any 1986-1987 Turbo Regal, since it is needed to control boost. They have 3 specially formed hoses with a special size diameter T in between two of the molded hoses. These also have the GM wording on them.

Over a period of time, heat can cause the hoses to swell and crack. While they last, we have them available for $44.95 plus shipping, Part #6644. Supplies are limited.

Here is a link to the Boost Line Kit on our web site:

We have the 1986-1987 Turbo Regal - GM Air Flow Duct (from turbo to MAF sensor), Part #6536 in stock for $61.95. Just a few left now.

We still have a few brand new GM right hand side marker lights with the blackout package. This is the marker light that attaches to the side of the headlight bezels. Price is $61.95 plus shipping.

If you are interested in any of these parts, you must call our office to purchase it. Some of these close out items are just about gone from the GM parts system.

NOTE - If you know of a GM or Buick Turbo event for this year, let us know and we can post it in our weekly Turbo Regal Inner Circle so our members are aware of the event.

The best way to stay informed with the show season is to check out the various Turbo Buick forums.

It is the annual "2010 OLD TOWN TURBOBUICK" gathering at Old Town in Orlando, Florida - Sunday, Feb 28th, 2010. This is a statewide event held every year for only Turbo Buicks. It attracts turbo cars from all around the state and even Alabama and Georgia.

30th ANNUAL GS NATIONALS - May 11th thru 15th, 2010. Beech Bend Raceway, Bowling Green, Kentucky.

Confirmed, as a special guest is noted drag racer "Big Daddy" Don Garlits, voted NHRA Top Driver from 1951-2000 Don Garlits, courtesy of ZDDPlus™. He will be at our Kirban Performance space.

I have just been informed that same week in Bowling Green the ZR1 Corvette group has their event. They will be participating at some point during the that week as guests at the race track. Assuming the ZR1 group includes the latest potent example, this is a rare chance to see one of the unique ZR1s that GM produced last year in very limited numbers.

"Light Your Fire" - 2010 Buick Performance Group Nationals - July 30th - August 1st, 2010 at the National Trail Raceway in Hebron OH (near Columbus). They want to gather together the largest number of 1969-1974 factory Stage1 cars anyone has ever seen since the Buick muscle car days of Flint.

This is a special event that may never come to pass again, so don't miss the factory "Stage1 Convention" at the 2010 Buick Performance Group National Event.

Our daughter-in-law Carrie has committed to a 60-mile, 3-day walk in October to raise money for Cancer research. Many of you have met her at our events. She needs to have $2300 raised by July 1st. If you would like to help with this fundraiser for a good cause, here is the information and a message from Carrie.

Susan G. Komen 3-Day for the Cure™ Walk - Carrie Kirban

I have taken on an incredible challenge. On October 15-17, 2010, I'll be walking 60 miles over the course of three days, camping out at night with thousands of other women and men taking this journey with me. I have committed to raise $2300 to be able to participate in the walk. The money I need to raise goes to cancer research and I pay for my expenses separately.

It's for an event called the Susan G. Komen 3-Day for the Cure™. Net proceeds from the Komen 3-Day for the Cure are invested in community-based breast health programs and breast cancer research.

You never know who this disease will strike next. My prayers go out to all of my friends and family that have been affected with this disease. Let's find a Cure! To make a donation, go to - The3Day.org - Click on Donate and search for my personal fundraising page under Carrie Kirban.

Although we send it out on Wednesdays about 3 pm, I usually start writing the Inner Circle on Sunday night. I was glad to see the Saints win the Super Bowl.

We are in the midst of having one of the snowiest winters in the last ten years.
