GM LICENSED REPRODUCTION VIN DATA DECALS FOR DOOR JAMBS continued -

We have done a lot more research on this project.

First and foremost will be offering the two door jamb data decals. After that, working with the same company, we will also being able to offer the SPI trunk label and the Window Stickers for our cars.

We have an exclusive arrangement with GM suppliers through the licensed reproductions company, ECS Automotive Concepts. The owner is Dave Walden, who has an amazing car collection.

One of the biggest events in the Chrysler world is the Mopar Nationals. This event attracts 40,000-plus people and over 2,000 cars on the show field. A tremendous accomplishment would be to take First Place in any of the various divisions. Taking the top prize, Best of Show, is quite an accomplishment.

Dave Walden has set a record that I doubt will ever be broken. In 2005 his Hemi Cuda took Best in Show, scoring the most points ever. In 2008 he duplicated his accomplishment with his 1970 Dodge Challenger. In 2010 he took the top prize again with his Valiant. Winning 3 of the top awards with 3 different cars is amazing.

To see more about Dave Walden’s cars, Google - Dave Walden, Hemi Cuda or Mopar Nats 2005.

His company holds license agreements with Chrysler, Ford, GM, as well as several other automotive companies, including Ferrari. With GM he can do all the late model GM vehicles, which is his larger VIN business for auto body shops.

We have proof of his license agreements with GM. He is the only company authorized by GM for the late-model cars from 1990 and up.

Several companies are grandfathered in to do the older muscle car VIN decals, but as you can see on the internet and from vendors, they only offer blank ones. I have not seen any company offer completed VIN decals on the proper paper and in the correct font style.

The equipment needed to imprint the proper, exact font style cost well over a $100,000. This allows gives him the ability to reproduce these decals in house.

As we showed last week on the 1987 door jamb decals, he has the correct font. You would not be able to match the font that Buick used by simply putting a blank VIN decals into a typewriter. Also, he uses the correct tamper-proof paper that cost a lot more than regular paper.

Our research shows the format for the 1987 door jamb decals was first used in 1987. The 1985 and 1986 used the same format, but was different from the 1984 and 1987. The GM part numbers on each decal is different for each change. The 1984 used still another format. All this can be verified against the GM part numbers in the bottom right hand corner of your door jamb decals.

For whatever reason from what I have seen, the 1986 and earlier ones have not held up well over the years. The shady area where Buick typed in the critical information is next to impossible to read today. It’s even worse if your car has been repainted, and now has paint overspray on them. Moisture or cleaning solution may have also rendered them unreadable.

Because these decals are printed on tamper-proof paper, there is no way to remove it without destroying it. If you try and remove it, and the top film or layer separates, taking some of the backing with it. In talking to some customers, if their car has been rust proofed, you may even have a plastic plug stuck into one of the labels.

Our company has been handed a great opportunity, as Dave has had plenty of companies wanting to buy wholesaler over the years. He never called them back. We are the only one. We are going to make this available to many of the other GM vendors, including Corvette and the older GM muscle car suppliers.

A special file is being set up for our turbo customers. Once we have all the specs and samples worked out, we will give you full ordering details. Basically, you will have 2 formats to choice from when ordering. If you recall, some of the wording was not on a straight line on my one label. It was not perfect. He made mine to match my originals, so the identical wording is also not on a straight line. You will have the same option… if some of your wording is not straight, they can make the new copy to match.

On the older door jamb stickers (1984, 1985, 1986), if you can’t read your information, you will need to provide proof of the car’s VIN number. We would accept a photo of the VIN plate, or title, or SPI trunk ID label.

Right now we are concentrating on the 2 door jamb labels. He is also doing the visor decal, which will be 100% correct, unlike the ones that are now being marketed.

Once we get samples from Dave of the 1984, 1985-1986 door jamb decals to picture alongside our 1987 ones he did, we will have ordering directions.

Pricing already has been established. The price will be $60 per door jamb decal and $6 for Priority Mail shipping. We highly suggest you buy both door jamb decals, so they look the same. Ordering both decals at the same time with save you shipping. We are not taking any orders yet, so please be patient.

PHOTO 1 - The first photo shows a set of the door jamb decals on a pre-1987 GM car. As you can see, this format with its shady bar areas makes it impossible to read the VIN number and the other related numbers that are unique to this particular car. In the second photo I tried to remove the tamper proof decals and this photo shows the results. It leaves is the back layer of the paper, and the layer I removed simply falls apart. I must have peeled over a dozen of them in the junkyard on Saturday to see if any could be removed in one piece. I had zero luck.

Each GM door decal has a specific GM part number. In each case, the part number is 8 digits followed by either the letter A or B.

The 1984 is 14065978A and B.

The 1985-1986 is 14085204A and B.

The 1987 is 10080812A and B.

The A letter with number is the decal that has the VIN info on it for each year. The B letter is the decal that has the weight and tire information.

At some point after 1987 the door decals have a different format and, I believe, became one decal. (My 2004 Impala has a single door jamb decal). From what I have seen, the trucks have a different door decal altogether in size and format.

Back tracking, before 1984 I did see a 1978 Pontiac and the door jamb decal were similar and had the part numbers 472929 and 472930. These older door jamb decals have just 6 digits in numerical order with no letter code.

As of this writing, I do not know for sure what year GM switched from the single blue VIN decal to the dual white door jamb decals on the passenger cars.

In the meantime, take a good look at your car’s 2 door jamb data decals. We suggest that you take a photo of them. If you plan to replace them, you will have proof of how they are positioned, which one is on top, and which way the copy reads.

Also, double check the GM part number to see if it agrees with the part number we listed for the year of your Turbo Regal.

Remember mistakes were made during production of our cars. I have seen mistakes in some of the cars I have owned. I remember having a brand new hood pad in the GM box and one of the words was actually printed upside down. When Pete Serio was doing door windows, more than once he found extra parts in the door. I had one customer who bought his Grand National brand new, and his console was all grey, not grey and black. The list of mistakes goes on.

MORE FROM MY ARCHIVES -

This week we will cover the 1986 Buick Press Kit. According to the news release, Buick introduced eleven new models for 1986. The T-Type package was offered on 6 different models. Of course, the most well known model was on the Regal. The big news was their introduction of the new front-wheel drive Riviera coupe and the Riviera with the T-Type option. This is very similar to the 1987 Riviera I listed for sale in Photo 4 in this Inner Circle.

Some of the big news for 1986 was the fact the Riviera was smaller than the previous year and the Le Sabre was now a front-wheel drive and not a rear-wheel drive model like the prior years.

PHOTO 2 - Shows the original 1986 Buick Press Kit outer folder. It was during these years the Hawk logo was widely used both in print and TV ads.

PHOTO 3 - Shows the front and back of the specifications for the all new 1986 Buick Riviera T-Type. Unfortunately, it was not turbocharged and the acceleration numbers of 0-60 was noted at 11.3 seconds. I guess the accent was on luxury as it certainly was not on acceleration!

MORE FROM MY ARCHIVES NEXT WEEK.

RARE T-TYPE RIVIERA FOR SALE - LOCAL TO US -

This rare real nice original 1987 Riviera T-Type car is located about 15 minutes from our shop. The car spent most of its life on the west coast until 2009.

The current owner has the service history for the car. The car only has 59,000 miles, and the body and interior are extremely nice. Good exterior color combination - white with grey bottom against a grey interior.

One of the most unique options is the center seat cushion is reversible! It can be switched from one side to another. I don’t know how many years Buick offered this unusual feature in their Riviera, but this car has it. The car seems to be reasonably priced at just $4,400. The book I have does not show how many 1987 Rivieras were produced with the T-Type option. It does show a 15,233 total were made.

My book does show the breakdown for the 1986 Riviera. The total production was 20,096 and just 2,042 having the T-Type package. Based on these figures, it’s probably safe to assume about 10% or less of the 15,233 in the 1987 production had the T-Type option for the 1987 Riviera. If this car perks your interest, email me [email protected] - and I can get more information for you.

LOST AND FOUND -

Saw this one under Lost and Found in our local paper. “Found a Drone. Must be able to identify!”

ONE FOR THE AGES -

The Cardinals/Packers game was a game to remember for years to come. Whatever the Cardinals are paying Larry Fitzgerald, he proved his worth and is fun to watch. I am not sure any NFL team has ever pulled off 2 successful Hail Mary passes in a single season. If not, the Packers hold the record having done it against Detroit Lions earlier in the year and in the play offs against the Arizona Cardinals.

Too bad the miracle didn’t have the same result in the Arizona game! That game reminded me of one year’s ago that I watched with my Dad that featured the Chargers against Miami in Miami. One of the heros then was Kellen Winslow. That game went into overtime and possession changed 6 times. I miss watching those football games with my Dad.

ORIGINAL GM USED LIGHTED REARVIEW MIRROR WITH LED LIGHTS

This used original GM lighted rearview mirror fits all GM cars and trucks from the late 1970s through the early 1990s.

Although the mirror is used, each one is cleaned and tested, then fitted with 2 new LED bulbs (a $20 value.) The original tube style bulbs are also included.

The LEDs lights shine a whiter brighter light, do not draw as many amps, and do not get hot like original bulbs.

Ideal if you have a T-Tops car.

It is easy to install with a simple 2-wire hook up - 1 wire is ground and the other wire is for power.

NOTE ABOUT PHOTOS ON THE WEBSITE -

We have heard from a couple people that have viewed the photos on the website. Because these have to be low-resolution photos to work on the Inner Circle segments on the website, any photos of text don't appear clear when enlarged. This is a problem when you are trying to see numbers, such as those on the VIN labels or pages from Options booklet. Also, because of photo reproduction and computer screen variations, the colors may not be true to the actual product or photo.

If you would like to have us email you any photo at the higher resolution for viewing, just email us and we will email them to you. Be sure to be specific on which pictures you want to see - Reference Inner Circle date and photo number 1, 2, 3 or 4 - [email protected]
