Greetings Turbo Regal Inner Circle Members 01-29-2014

MORE INFORMATION ON THE BUICK TRI-SHIELD EMBLEM -

In last week's Inner Circle we touched briefly on some of the background of the Buick Tri-Shield and how Buick has used it over the years. The current design began with the 1959 Buick model according to the information I found. We showed just a small portion of the Buick Tri-shield emblems that I have in my private collection. Over the years I have picked up two interesting Buick tri-shield emblems that we show in Photo 1 below.

PHOTO 1 - Pictured here shows two different Professional Salesmaster medallions. The larger one on the left is plastic and you can see the tri-shield contains the deer with the antlers in the top right of each of the shields and the small symbol in the bottom left of each of the three shields. The smaller medallion is quite heavy and could be used as a desk paperweight. Slightly smaller than the plastic one, the tri-shield does not show the deer with antlers nor the symbol in any of the three shields. I am guessing these were part of some sort of sales award to various Buick sales people. Perhaps one of our reads can fill me in on more details about these medallions.

TURBO-T EMBLEMS -

One set of emblems that appears on some original 1987 Turbo-Ts is located on the rear pillars behind the quarter glass. A similar one can be found surrounding the trunk lock. This set of 3 square plastic chrome emblems are not found on all 1987 Turbo-Ts. Since our car is original paint, I know it did get these plastic emblems. I have replaced them with brand new emblems several years ago. I also have the original Window Sticker and it has the proper codes for the turbocharged engine (LC2) and the “T” Package (Y56). At the top of the Window Sticker under Model ID it is listed as a 1987 Regal 2 DR COUPE (J47).

PHOTO 2 - The photo on the left shows the driver’s side and the square plastic chrome emblem that appears on our 1987 Turbo-T. The photo on the right shows the same basic emblem that has a hole in the center so it can surround the trunk lock on the trunk lid.

In my private collection, I have another similar emblem that is spring-loaded and would have been mounted on the header panel of a regular Regal that year.

PHOTO 3 - Shows that same style square emblem on a spring-loaded ornament that I think Buick used on a regular V6 or V8 Regal for 1987 models. The Turbo-T models received the special Turbo spring-mounted Buick tri-shield emblem that signified the car was turbocharged.

We welcome any input from our readers that can shed any answers as to how it was determined which Turbo-T received these square plastic chrome emblems, like we show in Photo 2.

FIRST SWAP MEET OF THE NEW YEAR IN OUR AREA -

The first swap meet of the New Year in our area was held January 17 thru the 19th at the Allentown Fairgrounds in Allentown, Pennsylvania. This is only about a 30-minute drive for me. I have been going for the last several years on a Friday afternoon to avoid the crowds. In all the years of attending this swap meet, I only found a few Turbo Buick items. They usually have a few cars for sale as well.

PHOTO 4 - The photo on the left shows a very well-restored 1950 Oldsmobile 88 two-door sedan. Oldsmobile was one of the first post-war GM cars to have a overhead V8 in 1949. This one featured a supercharger on it. The price tag was I think $29,000. The photo on the right shows a very rare car - a 1932 American Austin Coupe. This early mini car had a $15,600 price tag and reportedly the original owner was the Hunt Brothers Circus in Philadelphia. The car was a clown car at one time. These cars were made in Butler Pennsylvania.

MECUM COLLECTOR CAR AUCTION, KISSIMMEE, FLORIDA -

This Mecum Auction was held just last week and featured not only a GNX but five other Turbo Regals, according to Rich Warner who was spending his winter in Florida.

The GNX had 10,400 miles and had all the important documents, including the jacket and the numbered GNX book. It sold for $67,000. Two 1987 Grand Nationals sold - one for $15,000 and one for $18,000. Also, two 1986 Grand Nationals sold - one for $12,000 and one for $19,250. Rich says a 1987 Turbo T Limited was bid to $14,000, but was a no sale. A 1987 Regal drag car twin turbo (Gallina’s old car) was a no sale at $27,000. I don’t know if the prices stated include any commissions due to the auction house.

Our special thanks to Rich for providing these results for our readers.

It seems more and more Grand Nationals, in particular, are popping up on the collector auction scene. It is nice to see some GM variety among the heavy Chevrolet content.

I know I have said this before, but I often wonder, "Wouldn't it be nice if a detailed history of what auctions the car has been sold at previously and at what price were among the documents shown with these collector cars?"

Some of these cars simply bounce from auction to auction, and maybe in the same calendar year. If would be easy to track GNXs auction results because they all have a specific GNX number.

TV CAR CURRENTLY ON EBAY -

There is a 1984 Grand National For Sale listing on eBay, #231144168378. The car reportedly was used in the TV series "Life." Eileen and I used to watch this show. The car looks like it was the one and seller is in California.

Rick from Illinois passed this info to us last week.

Here is a link to this listing on eBay:

CAR FOR SALE 1987 GRAND NATIONAL -

This 1987 Grand National For Sale is located in Georgia and has just under 21,000 actual miles. It has factory T-Tops and runs out extremely nice. The current owner only put about 500 miles on it since buying it over a year ago.

The car is a two-owner car and has always been garaged. The current owner replaced the radiator, headliner, powermaster brake unit, as well as the brake proportioning valve. He also had a complete tune-up done.

The reason he is selling is they are expecting a baby. We originally handled this deal when the car was owned previously in New Jersey. The car does have some minor paint issues and needs a few things done to be perfect. It needs a power antenna, A/C charged, front bumper fillers, and the radio repaired. The price is $17,900.

TIPS AND IDEAS YOU HAVE TRIED -

If you have a tip or a discovery that you found that works on your Turbo Regal, drop us an email giving us the details so we can pass the info on to our readers. Remember, even with my knowledge, I don’t know it all. Simply email me at - [email protected]

LOCAL REQUEST FROM US -

As part of our growing business, we need to see if there are any local customers with the good fortune of owning a new 2014 Corvette.

We need to examine it under the hood to see what parts we can make for that market.

If you have one locally to us, contact me direct - [email protected]

COMING SOON - SPOOLFOOLS FRONT AND REAR BUMPER FILLERS -

Back in the summer of 2012 Mike Barnard started to craft his own unique version of the 1984-1987 Buick Regal rear bumper fillers. Unlike the GM two-piece design that overlaps in the center under the license plate area, Mike's design is one solid piece. It is all hand laid fiberglass that is made in the U.S.A. Mike personally did almost all the original prototype work so the finish product would be a top-notch part. If you are a member of the Turbo Buick Forum, you can see more information on his bumper fillers on their site. Mike has a love for these cars since he owns a 1987 Grand National.

Because of the constant polishing of the mold, the black gel coat in many cases looks better than if it was painted black! Many owners simply install it without painting it, as the quality is that good. All the necessary holes are pre-drilled.

We will have them on our website next week. However, because the rear bumper filler is one piece, it is oversized. Currently they would be drop shipped from California.

If you want to order this one-piece Spoolfool rear bumper filler, you have to contact our office so we can compute shipping costs - 215-766-1611. Ideally, if you have someone else in your area wanting the Spoolfool one-piece rear filler, two can be shipped in one single box. This way your shipping cost could be shared.

In looking ahead - with our date for the Open House April 12th 2014, we will announce in the next few weeks the option of picking up the Spoolfools one-piece rear filler at our Open House. This would avoid shipping charges. This would be a great option for anyone in the northeast area. Our plan later this spring is to get a skid of them shipped by truck to us, if we have several sold in advance. More on this later this Spring.

OUR SPRING OPEN HOUSE UPDATE -

KIRBAN PERFORMANCE OPEN HOUSE - SATURDAY - APRIL 12, 2014 - RAIN or SHINE - 9 am until 3 pm.

We just heard from Terry Shaw who will be attending. His company is well known among serious collectors for preparing proper appraisals on collectible cars.

Also attending for the first time is his brother Bruce Shaw who is a lawyer and accountant and specializes in Collector Car Fraud. His firm litigates counterfeit collector car fraud cases throughout the United States and has aided defrauded collector car hobbyists as far away as Dubai and Sweden. He will be doing a 30-45 minute seminar on this topic that day as well.

We have known both Bruce and Terry Shaw for over 40 years. I used to do the towing for Bruce Shaw in the 1970s when he operated several speed shops in the area and was buying cars. Bruce started his first speed shop in his parent's garage while still in high school!

ONE OF OUR PERSONAL CARS FOR SALE -

We are looking at upgrading one of our cars. This may interest one of our local customers. Car is a 2002 Pontiac Grand Prix coupe with the 3800 engine. It is not the supercharged version. We are the second owner. Garaged and never smoked in. Silver with a grey cloth interior. Car is absolutely show quality inside and out. Coupes are very hard to find in nice condition with good miles on them.

I looked at several before purchasing this one. Car has new Hankook tires, new powder-coated brake rotors, new brake pads, new GM HD front and rear sway bars, new headlights, new tail lights, just to name a few upgrades. Car has most of l the major options, except for the supercharger and sunroof. Has a clean Car Fax with only 65,000 original miles. Latest PA inspection, runs and drives 100%. Nothing inside or out shows even a hint of any wear issues. Wheels are perfect. Everything works. Buyer gets all my records related to the car. Looking for $5,495 or best offer. You would be hard pressed to find a cleaner example. I rather sell it outright than use it as a trade. For more details and photos, email me direct at - [email protected]

These are made in the U.S.A., are fully GM licensed, and will be available from all the other turbo Buick vendors.

These should be available later this month.

1984-1987 Buick Regal -
TRANSMISSION CROSSMEMBER UPGRADED BLACK POLY BUSHINGS (4) SET

These are factory-style replacement crossmember black poly bushings, complete with new hardware. The polyurethane material is far stronger and tougher than the factory GM rubber bushings. The GM bushings are no longer available.

These four black poly bushings sandwich the factory transmission crossmember at the ends to each side of the frame rail. Unlike the factory original bushings, these have a metal insert.

Each kit comes with four zinc-plated grade 10.9 bolts, two zinc-plated steel brackets and four black poly isolators, which will do both ends of the factory crossmember brace.

The four new grade 10.9 bolts and metal bracket are zinc plated to prevent rust.

Because of age, exposure and weather, the original GM rubber bushings can become compressed and deteriorate. They can also retain moisture and cause the ends of the crossmember to rust out. If these bushings in your car are severely compressed, it can alter the angle of the transmission in relationship to the rear.

An excellent time to replace these bushings is when you are having the transmission rebuilt. (You do not have to remove the transmission to install these, however you do have to support the transmission in order to remove and reinstall these new bushings.)

This is just another item that should be replaced to retain a firm support for the transmission. You may also want to replace the Rear Transmission Mount, Part #6941, at the same time. You may also want to replace the Engine Mounts, our Part #6891.

Another good restoration item.

STOCK APPEARING INTERCOOLER and TURBO HEAVY-DUTY HOSES SET

The only weak links in the intercooler turbo system are the three factory connecting hoses that GM used (#1, #2 & #3 in the illustration.)

The smallest hose connects the intercooler to the turbo and the other two connect the tube to the throttle body. The hose is cut rather short leaving very little to clamp against and the material is quite flimsy. When subjected to heat and flex, they could split or come off. If this happens, the car will sputter and choke.

This stock appearing hoses set is made from the identical fabric-style material and black color as the original. So, the outward appearance looks factory.

These hoses are twice as thick as the original GM equipment and slightly longer for a better fit.

A MUST improvement for your Buick… it's a good idea to keep a spare set on hand.

NOTE ABOUT LINKS IN THE INNER CIRCLE -

We have heard from a couple people that have had problems with the links in our Inner Circle.

When we check the links, they work fine. However, if you are not able to be directed to the exact website page or internet site, you can "copy" and "paste" the link into the URL in your browser (such as Safari, Firefox, Google Chrome, etc.) If it doesn't link in one browser, it may work in another.

NOTE ABOUT PHOTOS ON THE WEBSITE -

We have heard from a couple people that have viewed the photos on the website. Because these have to be low-resolution photos to work on the Inner Circle segments on the website, any photos of text don't appear clear when enlarged. This is a problem when you are trying to see numbers, such as those on the VIN labels or pages from Options booklet. Also, because of photo reproduction and computer screen variations, the colors may not be true to the actual product or photo.

If you would like to have us email you any photo at the higher resolution for viewing, just email us and we will email them to you. Be sure to be specific on which pictures you want to see - Reference Inner Circle date and photo number 1, 2, 3 or 4 - [email protected].

ABOUT OUR EMAILS -

Any inquiries concerning used parts, you must email me direct - [email protected] - I will answer you. However, if I fail to answer you within 24 hours, please email us again. Since expanding into used parts, I get a lot of emails and sometimes I may forget your request or may not remember who requested the item.

IN CLOSING -

If you're like me, you are now sick of hearing about the Polar Vortex weather or the Jet Stream that comes out of Canada - none of which is a good sign. Even our cats that reside in our pole building seldom venture out.

Spring can’t come soon enough to the northeast part of the country.
