Greetings Turbo Regal Inner Circle Members 03-01-2017 -

THE DEFINITION OF THE BUICK V6 LOGO -

According to Buick, the logo represents a “6,” which is emphasized to indicate the Buick V6 is unique and special. It also represents a lower case “b,” which could stand exclusively for “Buick.” The flow of the logo is also symbolic of the spinning or turbine action of a turbocharger. Turbo charging can also be emphasized by using warm-to-hot color combinations. The arrowhead draws attention and gives forward, aggressive motion. This is complemented by the slant of the logo, again emphasizing aggressiveness. This is almost word for word what Buick said in their advertisement about the Power Six Turbo logo.

PHOTO 1 - The photo to the left shows a copy of this Buick page that explains the Power Six logo. The photos on the right is the actual hand-drawn color comp artwork that Molly did in the early 1980s. The top right photo shows his overlay instructions. The lower right photo shows his hand-drawn mock up. The final slightly altered design would later adorn all the Turbo Grand National models. Molly’s early sketch that is very close to what Buick ended up using. There are three basic differences.

One is the font style Molly drew on the letter G. Another change may not be as noticeable. His sketch shows 5 small silver blocks on the top row, four in the center row, and five again on the bottom row. The production Grand National emblem that Buick used has four silver blocks on the top row, three silver blocks in the center row and four silver blocks on the bottom row. The last change is that the word “GRAND” is slightly shorter on the final design and doesn’t line up with the base of the blocks.

CONFUSING TURBO POWER SIX LOGO -

The different Power Six logo can be seen four times on your 1986-1987 stock Grand National. I am referring to the four distinctive wheel center caps where Buick, for whatever reason, overlapped the logo in reverse. Why it was done this way is confusing.

Years ago, I did question Molly about the two Power Six logos designs. He said that someone at Buick also made a version. So, if that is the case, you now know why both versions are on the 1986-1987 Grand Nationals. The version with the arrow overlapping the symbol is the one Molly did for Buick.

PHOTO 2 - The photo to the left shows one of the 1984-1987 fender badges. Note the number of silver boxes on each row compared to Molly’s artwork pictured in photo 1. The photo to the right shows a new 1986-1987 Grand National center cap

COMING NEXT WEEK -

We have more examples of the Power Six logo showing both Molly’s version and Buick’s version. Some you may not realize were made differently.

THE LUCKY NUMBER 7 -

The lucky number 7 keeps coming up in my life. I spent my growing up years living at 2117 Kent Road. My Dad’s favorite Bible verse was Luke 1:37. He would write this in many of his books when he autographed copies for people. My wife graduated from high school in 1967. I was in Vietnam in 1967. Our son was born in 1970. I bought my first Grand National in 1987. My first book was published in 1997. I turn 70 years old in 2017.

What made me think of the connection to the number 7 was that we are getting my first book, Kirban’s Guide to 1986-1987 Buick Turbo Regals, reprinted this month in 2017. It will be as one might guess, the 7th time it was reprinted since 1997. Sales to date have exceeded 5,000 copies.

It is the very first book written specifically for the 1986-1987 Turbo Regals. It took me well over a year to write that book and have my wife proofread everything. With this being the 30th anniversary (1987-2017) and this being the 7th reprint. I figured I would do something special with the latest reprint. If you call our office, I will autograph each book to whoever you want. I will also write “30th Anniversary.”

I never discount my books, but we will ship it free by Priority Mail as a way of saying thanz. Don’t delay as I have no idea how long I will offer this service.

You can’t order this autographed copy through our website as it is not set up to do the personalization. You must call our office and talk to Christina - 215-766-1611 x 0. We would not charge your credit card until we can ship your copy. This would make an excellent gift to any Turbo Regal owner.

This book is probably the best selling book on the 1986-1987 Turbo Regal. In looking at my car sales records between 1994 and 1997, we sold over 60 Turbo Regals in that time span. Those cars provided a lot of the research I needed to write this book.

We will also offer this personal autograph at our upcoming Spring Open House.

I will take some of my books with me to the seminar I am conducting in Illinois in June as well.

Anytime you have a book signed by an author, it usually increases the value. The value jumps even more once the author has passed on. By the way, this book is and always has been printed in the U.S.A.

My meager sales of over 5,000 copies in 20 years falls way short of what my Dad accomplished between the years 1970 and 1976 (there’s that number 7 again). His most popular book of the over 50 books he wrote was reprinted 17 times in just six years and had sales of over a half million copies! Going by memory, I think this was the third book he had ever written. His second book sold over a quarter million copies. I know there is no chance in the world I can come close to either of those numbers!

My Dad accomplished this without the benefit of the internet and he self published the books, meaning he did most of the distribution himself. I know this first hand as we handled most of the shipping of the books. The book was entitled “666.” It was even mentioned in one of Stephen King’s books.

PHOTO 3 - The photo on the left shows the cover of my Dad’s book “666.” The photo on the right shows the page listing each reprint and the date of each reprint. In some cases, it was reprinted three times in one year starting in 1970. I have some of the original cover artwork for his books.

NEW CUSTOM MONTE CARLO PART -

We just made a new custom Monte Carlo part that will fit most of the 1978 through 1988 Monte Carlos, El Caminos and Malibu, if they have the round gauge cluster. We already have several Monte Carlo vendors make advance orders with us for almost 100 sets.

The idea for this part came to me on one of my recent junkyard trips when I saw the plastic cluster shadow box (as it’s called) in a Monte Carlo.

This new custom part makes the stock dash cluster “pop.” It is a set of six polished aluminum rings that fit the original shadow box and the reproduction shadow box as well.

We also have two or three other Monte Carlo related projects in the works.

Currently we have no plans to add this to our website since it’s strictly for the Monte Carlos and we already sell to all of the related vendors.

We just had the 1964 GTO hood scoops redone. All the GTO suppliers can buy them from the main Pontiac distributor Max Performance. Be sure to check with your favorite Monte Carlo vendor for pricing and availability. They should have product to sell within the next 10 days.

PHOTO 4 - The photo to the left shows how the Monte Carlo dash cluster looks without the new polished aluminum rings. The photo to the right shows the same dash cluster with the polished aluminum rings around the six gauge openings. Rings are made in the U.S.A. The complete set is expected to retail between $42.95 and $49.95. The same local company makes our popular horn collars and vacuum blocks.

Every Monte Carlo vendor we have shown these photos to has placed an order.

None of this could be possible without Brian of GBody Parts and Mike of Mikes Monte Carlo. They supplied us with the additional parts we needed to make sure everything fit properly. We are fortunate enough to have a very good relationship with many different suppliers in the industry not just GM, but Ford as well.

BREAKING NEWS PRICE REDUCTION -

We are happy to announce a price reduction on the GM-style rear fillers or if you buy a pair of fronts and rears as a Package Deal.
The new price for the Reproduction GM-style REAR Bumper Filler Panels (2), part #7439, is $425. You save $34.95 if you buy just the rear GM style fillers.

If you buy the Reproduction GM-style FRONT & REAR Bumper Filler Panels (4) Set, part #7440, you pay just $500 - a savings of $79.95 over the old price for the set.

The price for just the Reproduction GM-style FRONT Bumper Filler Panels (2), part #7438, remains unchanged.

CONGRATS TO BUICK MOTOR DIVISION -

Congrats to Buick Motor Division for coming in 4th for having the fewest problems in three years of ownership. The average is 156 issues in three years per every 100 cars. Buick had just 126 issues per 100 cars. Most issues center around electronic glitches. Finishing 1-2-3 was Lexus, Porsche, and Toyota in that order.

Coming in last is Fiat that has a total of 298 issues per 100 cars in the first three years. Translation? Almost three problems per car in a three year time span! I doubt a Fiat sales person will be making that known to potential customers. The saying most associated for what Fiat stands for still rings true -“Fix It Again Tony.” I can truthfully say I never owned a Fiat.

I have no idea if they did this ranking back in 1987. If they did, I doubt Buick would be near the top with the paint and fit issues.

The car that probably would have finished last in the 1987 ranking would probably have been the Yugo.

UPDATE ON AC DELCO CD PLAYERS -

See the Rare Parts section as we have three more am/fm CD players coming soon from the same source as the ones we sold earlier. They have a 6-month warranty. They are also the most correct looking for the 1984-1987 Turbo Regals and the original radio brackets will fit to install it correctly. It is one of the easiest upgrades to do that, in my opinion, does not hurt or distract from the value. Prices range from $299.95 to $379.95, depending on format and features. All carry a six-month warranty and have the special harness to plug into the original harness.

REVERSAL OF VALUES -

The “Reversal of Values” is my name for comparing some cars, such as the 1964-1965 GTOs compared to the 1984-1985 Turbo Regals.

By far and away, the 1964 and 1965 GTO (the first two years) are the highest on the value scale compared to the last two years for the muscle era GTOs 1973-1974.

The opposite is true comparing the four-year run of the turbocharged Turbo Regals. The 1984-1985 are at the lower value scale compared to the 1986-1987 models.

Matter of fact, back when I was doing GTO parts and cars, I avoided 1971 through 1974 models completely.

The 1974 GTO had as its most weird option - a pop-up tent that attached to the hatchback. Originally, I thought only the 1964-1967 models would be collectible. I initially misjudged the value of the 1968-1970 models.

I did buy and sell about four or five Judge GTO models back in the day.

GM AND CONVERTIBLE-STYLE COUPES -

So far, time has shown that GM has not had much luck with any of their two-door convertibles or small roadster-style coupes. The first on the scene was the 1984-1988 Pontiac Fiero. The later Fiero V6 GT models would probably be the most desirable.

At the same time that Pontiac killed the Fiero, Buick entered the game with the 1988 Reatta. Loaded with technology, this car faded quickly from the car scene. It might have been different if they dropped the 3.8 SFI turbo engine in the car.

Cadillac had a few attempts, first the Allante, a joint effort with Italy and the US, and later with the XLR built at the Corvette plant. Cadillac was probably hoping the Corvette mystique would rub off on the XLR.

In more recent years, GM produced the Pontiac Solstice and Chevrolet Saturn Sky models. The rare Solstice was the GXP coupe model. I read in 2010 only 12 were made. Buick once again steps up to the plate with a two-door convertible called the “Cascada.” Time will tell if this car is a hit or not, but I have not seen one on the road as of yet.

Of the cars listed, I have had one V6 Fiero and one Reatta.

INTERESTING PHONE CALL LAST WEEK -

I received an interesting phone call last week from a guy who has an E30 BMW. It’s a grey market model and weighs less than 2,500 lbs with him as the driver. It is turbo charged, puts out 460 plus horsepower at the rear wheels, and is street legal where he resides in Montana Big Sky Country. This is where General Custer, two of his brothers, a nephew and a brother in law to General Custer died in battle. Custer’s wife made a good decision to stay home that day!

Turns out this BMW owner has been using our billet-style adjustable fuel regulator for over 10 years and just now figured out it was one of ours. He got it used years ago and it has been working perfectly all this time. He says he tested another brand that was over $200 and it lasted just six months. It is just one of four versions we sell for Porsche, which happens to be the same Bosch unit that certain BMW engines used as well.

ACTOR BILL PAXTON DIES -

Besides appearing in several popular movies over the years, I watch the TV series that Bill Paxton starred in this season, “Training Days.” It is one of just a handful of TV shows I watch on a weekly basis along with “Lethal Weapon” and “This is Us.”

By far and away “This is Us” is the best new drama show on TV this season.

NEW PART FROM US -

We now offer rebuilt front brake calipers that are powder-coated black so they won’t rust. It just makes sense to add this product to our system since we carry powder-coated front brake rotors.

Here is the link to these brake calipers on our website:

COMING SOON - “GRAND NATIONAL” LOGO SEAT ARMOUR™ SEAT COVER -

Since introducing the Buick Motorsports, T-Type and GNX Seat Amour seat covers, we have received several requests about getting our supplier to make one featuring the Grand National logo. I am happy to report that we are currently working on that one. The company has already granted us exclusive sales of that one as well.

Watch for updates in the Inner Circle as to when we will have the Grand National one available. The pricing would be the same as the other versions we currently sell. Actually, we have several others for other car models in the works also being made exclusively for our company. All of these seat covers will be on display and for sale at our upcoming Spring Open House, April 22nd 2017.

Another option is to pay for it now and pick it up at our Spring Open House on April 22nd. We also have a source that can sell you the pattern so you can imprint the Buick logo on the hood pad.

They have not yet told me my speaking times.

My granddaughter, Devyn hopes to go with me to help. With Chrysler introducing the Demon this April, my guess is they will have several Demons on display at Carlisle. Hope to see some of my customers at this event. I am as well versed with early Hurst history as I am with Turbo Regals.

As with all my seminars, I will be doing a M&Ms contest in honor of my parents. The Don Garlits autographed connecting rod will make a nice prize!

We have heard from a couple people that have had problems with the links in our Inner Circle.

When we check the links, they work fine. However, if you are not able to be directed to the exact website page or internet site, you can "copy" and "paste" the link into the URL in your browser (such as Safari, Firefox, Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, etc.) If it doesn't link in one browser, it may work in another.

Most people having problems are using Internet Explorer. If you are having issues with links, try another browser to see if it works.

You may need to "UPDATE" your browser to be use you are using the current version.

NOTE ABOUT PHOTOS ON THE WEBSITE -

We have heard from a couple people that have viewed the photos on the website. Because these have to be low-resolution photos to work on the Inner Circle segments on the website, any photos of text don't appear clear when enlarged. This is a problem when you are trying to see numbers, such as those on the VIN labels or pages from Options booklet. Also, because of photo reproduction and computer screen variations, the colors may not be true to the actual product or photo.

If you would like to have us email you any photo at the higher resolution for viewing, just email us and we will email them to you. Be sure to be specific on which pictures you want to see - Reference Inner Circle date and photo number 1, 2, 3 or 4 - [email protected]
