Greetings Turbo Regal Inner Circle Members 03-30-2016 -

OUR NEW BUSINESS VENTURE -

Last week we mentioned this new business venture that we started - custom printed acrylic signs. I already have about 6 local companies that want signs done for their businesses. They also like the idea that they can promote it to their customers, take orders, and make 35 to 40% on each one.

The machine that does the printing is capable of printing on material that can be as thick as 1 inch and as wide as 8 feet. The machine that does the printing costs over $100,000. We only know of two of these machines within a 50-mile radius of our business.

For our project they are using 1/8 thick acrylic. We get a great price on our orders because we get several done at one time. The price is the same no matter how many colors the print is. The process is called direct print.

The company across from our warehouse makes our brushed aluminum display boxes, complete with LED lighting. They already use the same material for their main business.

The image size of the smaller acrylic sign is 17-1/2" x 10". Allow at least 1" around the design, which will be hidden by the metal display box frame. The smaller aluminum box frame is 17-3/4" x 10-1/4" x 1-3/4" and comes with a UL CE certified 4' electric cord.

The image size of the larger acrylic sign we offer is 23-1/2" x 15-1/2". Allow at least 1" around the design, which will be hidden by the metal display box frame. The larger aluminum box frame is 23-3/4" x 15-3/4" x 1-3/4" and comes with a CE certified 4' electric cord.

The image can be printed vertical (portrait) or horizontal (landscape) onto the 1/8" thick acrylic material.

For best results, the image dpi must be at least 300 dpi resolution.

The end result is a beautiful eye-catching sign for your business, garage or home. We can even do photos if you have a digital file. It can be of your car or motorcycle, old advertising, family photos, etc. Everyone likes to see their name or company in lights. The better the copy or artwork, the better the final sign looks.

The price structure is very reasonable.

For example, if you have a digital file of your car, we can have it printed and mounted in an aluminum frame box with LED lighted for less than $165 in the larger 23-1/2" x 15-1/2" size. The smaller size would be under $110. These prices are for a single one-of-kind lighted display.

We can also offer the printed acrylic without the lighted display frame. The small one on 1/8" thick acrylic 17-1/2" x 10" would run just $29.95, and the larger sign on 1/8" acrylic 23-1/2" x 15-1/2" would be just $49.95. Prices do not include shipping.

We will have Special Retail pricing for our Buick customers at our Spring Open House. This is for a custom-made single sign.

You would be hard pressed to find a better price for what we can offer. We will have various samples on display at our Spring Open House. The ideas are endless.

We will also be offering wholesale pricing.

For more details email me direct - [email protected]

PHOTO 1 – In the photos on the left we show the machine that prints these acrylic signs on the top, the sign framed in the middle, and the sign lit up on the bottom. The top photo on the right shows one of the larger size signs, and the lower right photo shows one of the small signs of our white Turbo-T taken at the Warrington Country Club at my 60th Birthday Reunion Event. NOTE - Signs are difficult to photograph because of reflections and lighting, but the quality of the printing and the display box frame is excellent.

CAR IDENTIFIED IN THE FIELD -

Within a quarter mile of our house sits a car in a field. It’s only visible during the winter months before the spring foliage hides it completely from view. I always wanted to check it out and satisfy my curiosity as to what it was. It could be a car or maybe just a camper top sitting in the woods. It sits in the woods about the length of 2 football fields back from the road and the field is usually wet and muddy. I also wanted to do it when nobody was home at the house that sits near the field. I didn’t want anyone to think I was doing anything wrong.

So, the other day armed with my camera I ventured back to identify what has perked my curiosity for several years. The closer I got, the more I realized it was some sort of Ford model from the mid-1950s.

It turned out to be a very rare hardtop model. Ford came out with the hardtop models in 1951. I used to own a 1954 Ford two-door hardtop in high school. This didn’t look like a basic Ford model, so I thought maybe it was a Mercury model. I finally got close enough to see the dash and saw the Lincoln emblem. The car had obviously been there for many years and is beyond saving. It’s a real shame as I’m sure a mid-1950s Lincoln two-door hardtop today is fairly rare.

PHOTO 2 - We show 4 views of the badly neglected Lincoln coupe, probably 1954-1955 vintage. It would make a nice ad for Craigs List with the words, “Needing minor work and TLC to be road worthy again.”

BARN FINDS -

Almost every magazine now writes and shows various cars that are called “Barn Finds.” Even some car show events put untouched barn finds on display, complete with 30-year-old dust. Who knows what rodents may still be hidden in the cars. Another word for barn finds, which would be more accurate, is “Neglected” finds.

Many readers may remember the 5 cars we sold for a local person that had been tucked away. They were neglected from anywhere from 10 years to 20 years. There was a Grand National, a 5.0 notchback Mustang, a rare Firebird Firehawk, a 1995 Rivera, and last was a small two-door Blazer. The owner simply bought vehicles, drove them awhile, then he parked them in this old building.

Another car was the 1987 burgundy Turbo Limited that Gbodyparts.com purchased from us. This was a well-optioned car complete with the optional leather interior. The owner bought it brand new and simply got tired of the car. He then parked it in his field behind his house and there it sat for a dozen years or more. In the trunk, still in the 4 boxes, was a set of the GNX-style wheels we used to sell back in the early 1990s.

Some of you may recall the Grand National we bought that was parked in an open shed that was also home to 9 cats.

All these vehicles can be a real challenge to restore. It takes a lot of patience to restore a car that has been neglected for all those years. I commend any one that takes on a project like this from start to finish. I did it once with a 1964 GTO shell back in 1977-1978, and swore I would never do it again!

MORE FROM OUR ARCHIVES -

Last week we touched briefly on the GNX model that got a lot of magazine coverage in 1987. The downside was production was limited to only 547 being produced, which is out of the reach of many potential buyers. The Turbo-Ts and Grand Nationals accounted for many of the sales in the Regal models.

PHOTO 3 - The photo to the left shows the original 1987 Buick Press Release folder. The photo to the right shows the single one-page announcement for the GNX. It briefly explains the modifications that it would have and the Suggested Retail Price, which was $10,995 over the $18,295 Buicks MSRP Retail Price. Keep in mind, the basic Grand National that was converted by ASC into a GNX was a fully option loaded GN. This letter has a date at the bottom of 5/87. It’s probably one of the most rare letters to find today regarding the GNX project.

New for the 1987 model year was the Buick LeSabre T-Type. I have always liked this car, but it has never really garnered much interest among collectors. The interior was one of the most plush I have seen in a 1987 Buick model. The car had a real modern look with the composite tungsten-halogen headlights. It actually rode on the same size tires as the Turbo Regals - P215/65R15. The intent was to attract younger buyers as the front-wheel drive platform was going to be standard on most Buick models going forward. To save weight the LeSabre T-Type got thermoplastic front fenders, a first for Buick.

Buick would go on to make the LeSabre T-Type model for just 3 years - 1987, 1988, and 1989. It was available in only in 4 colors - silver, black, white, or burgundy. A rare option was leather seats in the LeSabre T-Types. What some may find confusing is the SPID label for the LeSabre T-Type option for this package was listed as “WE2,” the same code system for the Grand National option in the Regal! One thing they did get right on the LeSabre T-Type was they had a fully analog dash cluster that made the Turbo Regal dash look plain. In my opinion, one visible downside of this car model was the alloy wheels they used. Those wheels looked ugly.

PHOTO 4 - We show both the new factory 1987 Buick LeSabre Limited Coupe and the new LeSabre T-Type Coupe in these photos. Either one of these cars is very hard to find today in nice shape.

CLASSIC CARS IN CUBA -

Classic cars in Cuba have been in the news lately, since relations with Cuba appear to be thawing out.

The island of Cuba is basically in a time warp as far as U.S. made cars are concerned, with nothing being newer than 1959. This place would be like paradise for many car collectors.

Think about the new TV shows that will pop up covering some of the unusual cars that are driven daily in Cuba. Perhaps some of the best custom builders and mechanics are only 220 miles from Florida working in Cuba. The average monthly pay in Cuba is $20 for most workers. Buying new parts for vintage iron is non-existent. What we call customizing in the U.S. is done as a necessity in Cuba. Some of the engine conversions they have done are nothing short of impressive.

One example I read about was putting a Mercedes diesel engine in a Plymouth. I also read that their President Fulgenico Batista’s son owned a 1956 Corvette. It will be interesting to see what rare unusual U.S. cars become known as conditions with Cuba improve. One can only imagine the money some of these cars would bring if sold to collectors in the U.S.

NOTE - ABOUT LINKS IN THE INNER CIRCLE -

We have heard from a couple people that have had problems with the links in our Inner Circle.

When we check the links, they work fine. However, if you are not able to be directed to the exact website page or internet site, you can "copy" and "paste" the link into the URL in your browser (such as Safari, Firefox, Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, etc.) If it doesn't link in one browser, it may work in another.

Most people having problems are using Internet Explorer… If you are having issues with links, try another browser to see if it works.

You may need to "UPDATE" your browser to be use you are using the current version.

NOTE ABOUT PHOTOS ON THE WEBSITE -

We have heard from a couple people that have viewed the photos on the website. Because these have to be low-resolution photos to work on the Inner Circle segments on the website, any photos of text don't appear clear when enlarged. This is a problem when you are trying to see numbers, such as those on the VIN labels or pages from Options booklet. Also, because of photo reproduction and computer screen variations, the colors may not be true to the actual product or photo.

If you would like to have us email you any photo at the higher resolution for viewing, just email us and we will email them to you. Be sure to be specific on which pictures you want to see - Reference Inner Circle date and photo number 1, 2, 3 or 4 - [email protected]

2016 CALENDAR OF EVENTS -

KIRBAN PERFORMANCE PRODUCTS SPRING OPEN HOUSE -
Saturday, April 30rd, 2016 - 9 am - 2 pm -
NOTE - The date was changed to APRIL 30th

Once again free Yum Yum donuts and coffee will be available in the morning. Terry Shaw will be conducting a seminar on the importance of having your car appraised.

We will have several unique limited production items available for sale at this event. Also samples of our new project. Although not strictly car related, we can do car photos as well. This is a very unique format done on a special machine. In my immediate area I only know of two companies that have this machine.

We will be awarding 3 different trophies at our Spring Open House, courtesy of Russ and Nancy. One will be for Longest Distance driven in a Turbo Regal to our event. Another trophy will be awarded for the car needing the most TLC, meaning the one Turbo Regal needing the most tender loving care. Last, but not least, Kirban’s Choice Award, which will be one that I pick that I like or represents a car that I would buy.

Russ and Nancy have agreed to do the cooking. The luncheon is strictly by donation with all proceeds going to PBS, which Russ and Nancy support.

This is the only Open House we are doing this year, so you don’t want to miss it.

Most of our website products will be specially priced. We will have an array of used parts for sale, our M&M contest, and our no reserve auction. This event has no rain date.

Ideally you could attend our Spring Open House on the 30th and then take a drive down and attend the Turbo Buick/Richard Clark event, which starts the following Wednesday.

These are 2 great Turbo events back to back.
