Greetings Turbo Regal Inner Circle Members 04-06-2016 -

BOSCH OR AC DELCO - WHICH IS IT? -

Bosch and AC Delco are two very well-known brands. Like several other companies, we advertise the AC Delco O2 sensor. What many owners may not realize is that they are both the same - Only the box is different and the part number AC Delco assigned to the O2 sensor is different.

If you ever look closely at the Bosch O2 sensor that is correct for our cars, you will see the Bosch logo imprint on the actual O2 sensor! The same exact Bosch logo appears on the AC Delco O2 sensor.

PHOTO 1- In this photo we show the Bosch and the AC Delco boxes with the O2 sensors from each box. The sensors are 100% identical. The AC Delco O2 sensor is a few dollars more than the Bosch sensor.

If I had to guess, I would say at least 75% of the replacement engine related parts you buy today are done by a handful of companies and packaged under different suppliers. You can walk into any Auto store and clearly recognize the Cardone blue and white boxes, no matter what company label is over the end of the box.

REMINDS ME OF A STORY -

The above story reminds me of a similar story concerning the Pontiac Division of General Motors and Hurst.

For many years, the only company that was able to show their company name on a visible part on a GM vehicle was the brand name of the tires. You would never see another company name on a visible part until around 1965.

In the early 1960s, prior to the release of the new 1964 Pontiac GTO, Hurst scored a major account with Pontiac. Pontiac in the fall of 1963 came out with a GTO package on their LeMans model. Sounds almost like what Buick did when they came out with the T-Type and Grand National option on a Regal.

During that first year of production Hurst was not permitted to emboss their name on the chrome-plated handle, since it was against GM policy at the time. This must have really bothered Hurst - to have a huge account like Pontiac and yet not have their name visible. Also, even though Hurst supplied the shifter, Pontiac made their linkage rods. This was either to save money or save time on installation.

The Pontiac shifter rods used a clinch-style button setup to lock on the linkage rods. The Hurst linkage rods were threaded, so they were more precise and, of course, would not move under hard shifting. When Pontiac installed their own linkage rods, they created another product for Hurst. Hurst marketed what was called a “KPO” kit to replace the inferior shifter rods from Pontiac with better threaded rods. Hurst had to make special rods to fit. This was because Pontiac had a mounting plate to get it through the console.

I sold these KPO kits for many years when we were in the GTO business. I don’t know the reason exactly, but for the 1965 Pontiac models that had the factory Hurst shifters installed Hurst was able to have their name embossed on the chrome-plated stick. I am told this was because Pontiac realized that the name HURST was a very well-respected company and had a proven product. That became part of their promotion. I was told years ago when this deal was done Hurst bumped their price to Pontiac a $1 per shifter! That may or may not be true. The rest, as they say, is history since Hurst would acquire accounts with almost every car model in the GM, Ford, and Chrysler car line.

MORE FROM OUR ARCHIVES -

In the last several Inner Circles we’ve been covering the 1987 Buick Press Kit.

PHOTO 2 - Here are two photos from the 1987 Buick Press Kit. The photo on the left shows the Turbo-T in white with the black-out package and a regular Regal Limited model. The photo on the right shows the 3.8 SFI Turbo with Intercooler and the 2.0 OHC MFI Turbo engine. The Turbo-T in white has always been one of the most popular colors, especially with the black-out option. Also the color white did not seem to have the paint issues that black had on these cars.

One of the most unusual 1987 Buick brochures I have in my collection is from Helsinki, Finland. It is a 4-page full-color brochure. The dealership on the brochure covers Buick and Chevrolet, and they also sell Nissan Subaru, and Chrysler.

PHOTO 3 - The top photos shows the front and back of this 4-page unusual brochure. Note the foreign wording enlarged in the lower photo. This brochure featured just the 1987 Grand National. It makes you wonder how many Grand Nationals were sold in 1987 in Finland.

IT MAY HAVE BEEN A GOOD IDEA ON PAPER -

It may have appeared to be a good idea on paper, but in actual execution neither car pictured in Photo 4 look like anything I would be proud to say I built. Both of these are in the same junkyard that has probably 6,000-plus cars and trucks. Both vehicles show extensive use of wood, which may have been the builder’s true skill. Blending wood with a steel car just didn’t work in these two cars.

PHOTO 4 - The top 2 photos show someone’s home-built convertible dream car. It’s hard to tell if it ever was finished and enjoyed, or simply scrapped partially through the project. Most of the back end is wood. If I had to guess as to the time frame this project was built, I would say late 1950s early 1960s. Car is very crude looking. The lower 2 photos show another work of art and it appears to be from a mid-1970s Chevy. The builder probably originally wanted an El Camino and thought he could cut up his current sedan and make one. The roofline after the doors is unique. The builder even had custom running boards fitted on it. The hood was off the car on the ground and had a huge cut out for some sort of scoop.

Seeing these 2 works of art reminded me of years ago when we had a towing business and I was buying cars. I remember seeing this huge black car sitting neglected at a house. You could tell it was not a production model. The front was from a 1940s Buick and the roof was chopped off in an attempt to make it a 4-door convertible. I could have bought it but passed on it since it had been neglected so long and was crudely done.

Fortunately, over the years I have seen some really nice custom work on various cars.

CUBA AND CLASSIC AMERICAN CARS -

In our local paper this past weekend was an article about the classic cars in Cuba. They estimate about 60,000 American cars are in Cuba. Most Cubans put a high value of these cars. Of course, the cars have been modified over the years to keep them running. Unfortunately, trade regulations effectively bar cars from Cuba from being transported or sold to anyone in the U.S.A.

OUR NEW BUSINESS VENTURE -

We will have several samples on display at our Open House and at the TurboBuick/Richard Clark event in North Carolina. It makes for a very unusual gift as we can direct print a photo of your car on the acrylic and have it framed and lighted by LED lights for display.

IT HAPPENS ONCE EVERY 97 YEARS -

The last time it happened was 1919, according to my postmaster. She says she was not there to witness it in 1919. Prior to 1919 First Class postage was 3 cents. In 1919 they lowered First Class postage to 2 cents.

On April 10th First Class postage will actually drop from 49 cents to 47 cents. Originally when she told me this the other week, I thought it was an April Fools’ joke! It’s not! On April 10th the rate drops back to 47 cents. I don’t know any of the details as to why, only that it will happen April 10th. It may be another 97 years before it happens again!

PREPARING FOR OUR SPRING OPEN HOUSE -

If you are planning on attending our Spring Open House and want to buy the Spoolfool one-piece rear filler, be sure to place your order soon so we have one set aside for you.

The same goes for the Pypes dual exhaust system. In either case, we will not charge you until the day of our show.

Call and speak to Christina to place your order - 215-766-1611 x 0.

Remember, we are always in the market for good used Turbo Regal parts that you can “cash in” as trade value towards items you want and need. Bring any cores, especially turbo cores, which we need.

BREAKING NEWS - SPRING OPEN HOUSE -

I have seen photos of the trophies that Russ and Nancy have donated for our event. The trophies are impressive!

We are having the company that makes the sign display frames for us work on a new Buick project. If all goes well, we should have samples on display at our Open House. It’s an item nobody has reproduced and fits virtually every G-body car made. I thought of it the other day when I was in a junkyard.

We will have some really neat items on display and some custom-made things for sale at our Open House. Remember, this event has no rain date. Yum Yum donuts go quickly. We will have our usual M&M contest.

Please, if you are coming bring us any CORES you may have. We badly need good clean steering wheel cores (1986-1987), correct 1986-1987 mass air flow sensors, and stock 1986-1987 Turbo cores.

We really need these 3 items in order to keep the flow of rebuilt parts available to others. I also buy or trade for most any good Turbo Regal items that you may not need or want. Bringing them to our Open House is an excellent time to cash them in and avoid shipping costs.

We just got word that Mike Bernard, who makes the Spoolfool fillers, is donating a one-piece rear filler for our raffle. This is another reason to plan to attend. Many thanks to Mike for his generosity and support of many of the Buick events.

Also, I been going through my original photos and Turbo Buick literature and we will have a lot of original Grand National literature available for sale. Also, there will be some neat GNX items we had made up for sale. This is one Open House you do not want to miss.

In this category, we will run the descriptions for two-to-three weeks and, if there is no interest in that particular vehicle, it will be deleted the following week. Every 1978-1987 G-body car had 2 tamper-proof door jamb VIN data decals. It’s impossible to remove the originals decals without destroying them. These decals are required by Federal Law to be printed on tamper-proof paper. These important decals show the car’s date of manufacture and the 17-digit VIN number. In many cases, your original decals may no longer be readable, may be missing, or may have paint overspray on them. We will have a display board at our Spring Open House showing all the GM car door jamb VIN data decals from 1969 through 1989.

NOTE - ABOUT LINKS IN THE INNER CIRCLE -

We have heard from a couple people that have had problems with the links in our Inner Circle.

When we check the links, they work fine. However, if you are not able to be directed to the exact website page or internet site, you can "copy" and "paste" the link into the URL in your browser (such as Safari, Firefox, Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, etc.) If it doesn't link in one browser, it may work in another.

Most people having problems are using Internet Explorer… If you are having issues with links, try another browser to see if it works.

You may need to "UPDATE" your browser to be use you are using the current version.

NOTE ABOUT PHOTOS ON THE WEBSITE -

We have heard from a couple people that have viewed the photos on the website. Because these have to be low-resolution photos to work on the Inner Circle segments on the website, any photos of text don't appear clear when enlarged. This is a problem when you are trying to see numbers, such as those on the VIN labels or pages from Options booklet. Also, because of photo reproduction and computer screen variations, the colors may not be true to the actual product or photo.

If you would like to have us email you any photo at the higher resolution for viewing, just email us and we will email them to you. Be sure to be specific on which pictures you want to see - Reference Inner Circle date and photo number 1, 2, 3 or 4 - [email protected]

2016 CALENDAR OF EVENTS -

KIRBAN PERFORMANCE PRODUCTS SPRING OPEN HOUSE -
Saturday, April 30rd, 2016 - 9 am - 2 pm -
NOTE - The date was changed to APRIL 30th

Once again free Yum Yum donuts and coffee will be available in the morning. Terry Shaw will be conducting a seminar on the importance of having your car appraised.

We will have several unique limited production items available for sale at this event. Also samples of our new project. Although not strictly car related, we can do car photos as well. This is a very unique format done on a special machine. In my immediate area I only know of two companies that have this machine.

We will be awarding 3 different trophies at our Spring Open House, courtesy of Russ and Nancy. One will be for Longest Distance driven in a Turbo Regal to our event. Another trophy will be awarded for the car needing the most TLC, meaning the one Turbo Regal needing the most tender loving care. Last, but not least, Kirban’s Choice Award, which will be one that I pick that I like or represents a car that I would buy.

Russ and Nancy have agreed to do the cooking. The luncheon is strictly by donation with all proceeds going to PBS, which Russ and Nancy support.

This is the only Open House we are doing this year, so you don’t want to miss it.

Most of our website products will be specially priced. We will have an array of used parts for sale, our M&M contest, and our no reserve auction. This event has no rain date.

Ideally you could attend our Spring Open House on the 30th and then take a drive down and attend the Turbo Buick/Richard Clark event, which starts the following Wednesday.

These are 2 great Turbo events back to back.
