04-08-2020 Inner Circle

Greetings Turbo Regal Inner Circle Members 04-08-2020 –

IN OBSERVANCE OF GOOD FRIDAY - CLOSING

We will be closed for Good Friday, April 10th. No phone calls will be taken. You can still place your order thru the website. Orders will be processed the following Monday, April 13th.

Stay safe. This was one of my Dad’s favorite quotes, "Your Health is your Wealth."

UPDATE ON SHIPPING –

We are still able to ship daily both by mail and UPS. Our cars now sit all the time mostly on battery tenders to keep the batteries fully charged. It sounds weird, but you can now wear a mask into virtually any bank and not raise an eyebrow!

THE IMPACT OF THE VIRUS -

I doubt the cruise industry will ever return to what it was. You know it’s not good to let a car sit unused so you can imagine what it cost to maintain a huge cruise ship that would sit maybe for several years not getting used. Same goes for airplanes. At least we have more than 3 black and white TV channels, cable, video games, and the internet to handle the issue of boredom.

My wife saw this quote, “Anyone else’s car getting 3 weeks to the gallon at the moment?” When this ends, there will be a stockpile of fuel and gas prices will be the lowest they have been probably in 10-15 years.

Note on the listed 2020 Buick events for this coming season, another event has been cancelled. As time goes on and we get more information, we will post the changes by each event.

I would think at this point Spring Carlisle in late April and any event car related for the next several months will be cancelled or postponed.

REMEMBER WE HAVE CLOSED OUR PLUMSTEADVILLE ADDRESS –

NOTE - We have closed the Post Office box in Plumsteadville, so any correspondence, returns or incoming orders MUST be shipped to Kirban Performance Products, 529 Haycock Run Road, Kintnersville, PA 18930, effective immediately.

MORE COLLECTIBLES FROM MY PRIVATE COLLECTION –

All these items are for sale in the Rare Parts section. Some of these were made many years ago. In some cases, we bought them from another source.

PHOTO 1 – The top left photo shows a Buick tri-shield plate and a Buick Grand National plate. Both are metal. The top right photo shows a black Buick Motorsports plate. The bottom left photo shows a white Buick Motorsports plate. The bottom right photo shows a metal ”Bad to the Bone” plate and one of the 145 speedometer decals we used to sell about 1 year ago. All are listed for sale in the Rare Parts section.

POWERMASTER BRAKE COMPONENTS -

Every year it gets tougher to find good used powermaster parts. I can’t think of one single part that is on a powermaster brake unit that you can readily buy at any parts store in the country. Even the black plastic reservoir cap is different from any other vacuum brake reservoir. Why that is I have no idea, but I have never found one from another brake reservoir that would interchange.

We have pictured the powermaster parts that can all be found under the Rare Parts section for sale in Photo 2.

PHOTO 2 – The top left and top right photos show a good tested brake bowl, both factory lines to the unit, with 2 factory clamps and a brake switch. The bottom left photo shows a powermaster brake reservoir cap with (not visible) gasket, both original brake lines with original clamps and brake switch. The bottom right photo shows a very rare powermaster parts kit, which includes all the parts seen in the bottom left photo plus a pair of the factory brackets to secure the motor to the cylinder, and attaching hardware and bushings. The brackets pictured are mint original, not rusted at all.

LATE-MODEL BUICK GM FACTORY AM/FM CD PLAYER FOR SALE -

It has been years since I have had a Buick GM factory am/fm CD player to sell. One reason is many Buick buyers in the early 1990s were elderly and did not step up and buy the CD option for their LeSabre, Century, or Park Avenue model. Also, these cars, due to their age, are very difficult to find in junkyards today. The frame on these has the same slot locations as all the G-body radios, so the factory side brackets will bolt up with no problem.

The key is you need a plug-and-play jumper harness to plug your factory harness into this new plug on the back of the radio and a jumper antenna lead as the antenna plug is a different size.
We have those parts with the radio for the one pictured in Photo 3.

In the 4 photos showing the factory am/fm CD, you can see my one cat Squeaky who insists on bothering me any time I do anything on this one work table.

PHOTO 3 – We show 4 views of this rare factory GM am/fm CD player, including the special harness. Also, you can see we have powered it up on the radio as well as showing the CD functions. It is in mint condition.

BACKTRACKING TO LAST WEEK –

Last week, we did a small article on the accident I had with the first tow vehicle I used, the 1997 Dodge Dakota truck. It reminded me of a more severe truck accident I had back in 1973.

In the 1970s I would be gone about 2 weeks every month touring the country with my Dad who spoke every night in various churches. I would drive my truck loaded with his books and handle the book sales each night. A few years later my Dad would expand to include another driver and truck, so there would be two of us on the road about two weeks every month. I travelled to almost every state in the USA.

On these trips, during the day I would hit small towns buying various antiques. On the later trips, I started to haul an open car trailer with me and try to buy a muscle car mostly on my trips down south as those cars did not have the rust issues. It was a good system provided I was at the church on time each night in that town. The downsides were hearing the same sermon from my Dad every night and having to wear a suit and tie!

I started to do these trips around 1971-1972. At the time, I had three Studebaker trucks. I had a restored 1947 half-ton pickup and a 1947 Studebaker one-ton ramp truck powered by a Lincoln V8 engine. I also had a 1962 Studebaker V8 pickup truck for the road trips. I had a custom-made camper made for the 1962 Studebaker pickup truck that extended over the cab to haul my Dad’s books.

It was a good system. The year was 1973. On this particular roadtrip it was starting in Rapid City South Dakota, which was a 3-day trip from my home in eastern, Pennsylvania. I had to drive to Rapid City, South Dakota prior to meeting my Dad on the morning of the night he was scheduled to talk in Rapid City. On the morning of the third day of my 3-day trip, about 50 miles south of Rapid City I had my accident. I hit strong winds that morning and I was probably speeding. Several strong gusts of wind blew across the interstate. I lost control of my truck and it crossed over into the other lane and went down the embankment. The truck flipped over and, by the grace of God, it bounced back up on its wheels. The camper part was smashed into a million pieces and my Dad’s books were scattered all over the embankment. I did not even suffer a single scratch. The truck would crank, but not fire up. It turned out that the distributor cap had broken.

A few good people stopped and helped me gather up my belongings and the many books. I had a tow truck tow me into Rapid City. Here I was with no truck and what was the start of a 10-14-day road trip over 2,000 miles from home.

As you can imagine, my Dad was initially upset but glad I was not hurt. At the meeting that night he asked the question, “Does anyone here work at or own a car dealership in the Rapid City area?” Luck was on our side as someone said they worked at a Chevrolet dealership in town. I knew this was not going to be a money-making trip for me as I would have to buy a fairly new truck since we were about 2,000 miles from home. Plus, we either had to buy a used truck with a camper lid or a new truck and then buy a camper lid. This all had to be done quickly so I could drive to the next town in order for my Dad to keep his schedule for that night’s talk. In South Dakota towns are many miles apart. I ended up buying a slightly used 1973 Ford F250 XLT that already had a camper lid on the back.

I recently stumbled on the retail installment contract from the Rapid City Chevrolet company dated September 25, 1973. They gave me a whopping $120 for my wrecked truck and my Dad put up $1,475 in cash as the down payment. That left a balance of roughly over $5,000 which included the interest on the loan. Translation, I ended up with 36 monthly payments of $109.84.

Years later I would have it converted to a tow truck with an electric winch installed as I had given up my road trips with my Dad. It just got to be too much for me running a towing business and a GTO mail-order business. Looking back, it was a great experience seeing much of the USA.

PHOTO 4 – The top left photo is a picture of the 1962 Studebaker pickup truck before the accident. The lower left photo is a photo of the 1973 Ford XLT pickup truck. It may not be visible but it says, “Den’s Towing Service” on the door with the phone number and my black hat logo that was and still is my trademark. The top right photo shows the actual installment truck contract. The bottom right photo shows the original South Dakota license plate I drove on for almost a year. Back then in South Dakota, the tag came with the vehicle, even for out of state residents. I did not have to transfer my PA truck tag to the Ford.

To this day, I have no idea if the truck flipped over just once or more than once.

STORIES THAT CAUGHT MY INTEREST THIS PAST WEEK –

Looking ahead to when this virus has been eliminated, one commentator wondered, “What will seating be like in food places, stadiums airplanes and theaters.” Would they remove every other seat or, in the case of food places, remove 30% of their tables?

Makes you wonder what it will be like going forward.

TIPS AND IDEAS YOU HAVE TRIED -

TIP FROM KIRBAN –

Because of the virus, some parts have become difficult to get. Many suppliers have had to shut down throughout the country.

1987 GRAND NATIONAL - FOR SALE – SOLD IN 24 HOURS

This refurbished 1987 Grand National is local to us. The seller has purchased many of the parts from us to refurbish this 1987 Grand National. Options include - T-Tops, power seat, tilt, cruise, delay wipers, power windows, posi rear, power antenna (works), and power locks. It has a later GM factory am/fm CD player. The actual miles are 69,000.

This stock appearing Grand National has an asking price of $21,900. For more photos, email me direct – [email protected] - CAR SOLD

1985 REGAL LIMITED CHEVY V8 POWERED - STILL AVAILABLE - FOR SALE –

One of our relatives local to us is having us sell their custom-built 1985 Regal Limited that has been in the family since new. This 1985 Regal Limited has always been garaged, never hit, or smoked in. Our son Darrell repainted this car the factory color back in 2003 for $2,000. At 128,000 miles, the engine was converted with a brand GM 350/330 HP crate motor at a cost of $5,200. This was backed up with a rebuilt turbo 400 transmission. A local shop that we deal with redid the rear putting in a new eaton posi with, I believe, to be 3.08 gears. Gear ratio is perfect for high speed cruising.

Being a Limited, it is very well optioned and even the power antenna works. It has Bilstein shocks. Tires are fairly new. The tire size is 205/75 by 14s. Riding on the original 14 by 6 steel wheels with full Regal wheel covers.

With just a few Turbo Regal upgrades this would be an extremely nice solid handling Regal. I you install set of 16 by 8s on all four corners, a Turbo-T steering box, a rear sway bar, and a leather wheel, it will not only ride better, but look better too. The doors shut like they are brand new. The driver’s power pillow seat is the only interior part that shows very minor wear along the edge and around the power switch. A set of tasteful 3 gauges hang of the bottom edge of the dash under the radio. The power seat motor runs but does not function. Headliner will need to be replaced. The steering column has movement in the one section of the tilt.

The current mileage is 135,000, so that is less than 10,000 miles on a brand new GM crate motor. Electric fan with a V8 radiator handles the cooling. The AC has been completely rebuilt. Car has long-branch headers that dump into a new GNX exhaust system. Bigger front sway bar was installed. MSD ignition and an Edelbrock 4-barrell carburetor are fed with a cold air system. The adult owner has never once driven it hard to chirp the tires. Car still has its original half-padded roof. Body and paint are real nice with zero rust. All the stainless and emblems are in good condition. Nothing is missing. Bumpers also are close to new. All the critical labels are still intact, including the SPID label on the inside trunk lid. This car is a bargain and has had excellent care since new.

NEW LOWER PRICE $5,995 - OBO

The owner needs to sell the car. The body is exceptional with near perfect chrome, and all the stainless is nice. The car is at our house. For more photos, email me direct - [email protected]

Good news - We now accept Classified Ads in our weekly Inner Circle emails. Over the years several customers have asked about placing an ad in our weekly Inner Circle.

Here are the options and the costs.

Ads can be from any individual or company. It needs to be automotive related, meaning it does not need be specifically Turbo Regal related. It can be for something for sale or something wanted.

It can be an ad for something for sale or an ad for something you are looking for.

We have never missed a single week since we started the Inner Circle email format in 2009. It’s something I enjoy doing and I just always seem to have enough material to write about.

Our weekly Inner Circle reaches over 3,400 members every Wednesday direct to their inbox. The Inner Circle also appears every Wednesday on our website with the related photos. Your ad would be visible to both groups of readers. So, the exposure to your ad is well over 3,200 potential buyers.

It is FREE, probably one reason why nobody complains about what I write about. To subscribe simply email – [email protected] - to get our free weekly Inner Circle email.

We have heard from a couple people that have had problems with the links in our Inner Circle.

When we check the links, they work fine. However, if you are not able to be directed to the exact website page or internet site, you can "copy" and "paste" the link into the URL in your browser (such as Safari, Firefox, Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, etc.) If it doesn't link in one browser, it may work in another.

Most people having problems are using Internet Explorer. If you are having issues with links, try another browser to see if it works.

You may need to "UPDATE" your browser to be use you are using the current version.

NOTE ABOUT PHOTOS ON THE WEBSITE -

We have heard from a couple people that have viewed the photos on the website. Because these must be low-resolution photos to work on the Inner Circle segments on the website, any photos of text don't appear clear when enlarged. This is a problem when you are trying to see numbers, such as those on the VIN labels or pages from Options booklet. Also, because of photo reproduction and computer screen variations, the colors may not be true to the actual product or photo.

If you would like to have us email you any photo at the higher resolution for viewing, just email us and we will email them to you. Be sure to be specific on which pictures you want to see - Reference Inner Circle date and photo number 1, 2, 3 or 4 - [email protected]

ABOUT OUR EMAILS -

Any inquiries concerning used parts, you must email me direct - [email protected] - and I will answer you. However, if I fail to answer you within 24 hours, please email us again. Since expanding into used parts, I get a lot of emails and sometimes I may forget your request or may not remember who requested the item.

IN CLOSING –

Let’s hope the virus hits its peak soon and starts to decline. Boredom is tough to combat for most people.
