Greetings Turbo Regal Inner Circle Members 05-08-2019 –

LAST SATURDAY’S SPRING OPEN HOUSE RESULTS –

The weather for the Open House started out gloomy, but by early afternoon the sun was shining bright. Although the Turbo Regal car count was down from previous years, we still had between 35 and 40 Turbo Regals in attendance, according to Jason from Canada who counted the cars.

More importantly, the crowd size was at least equal to years passed. I did notice at least a dozen more owners selling various parts from behind their cars. Those that came had a lot of choices for buying parts compared to years past. I know I bought a lot, including several rare parts. Brian and Sandy from G-Body were very pleased with their sales for the day. I even bought some extremely rare parts from various people, which you can see for sale under Rare Parts.

It took over 2 hours to raffle off the donated items, M&Ms contest, and conduct the No Reserve Auction. Participation with the No Reserve Auction bidding on several items was very intense. The winner of the M&Ms contest also got a $30 PA lottery ticket and, if he hits for the $3 million top prize, you can bet we will be in touch with him! Two of the No Reserve Auction items of interest were a brand new Spoolfool rear filler and a complete set of GNX-style wheels with nearly new BF Goodrich tires on them. Those two people were quite happy with their purchase.

Several really nice Turbo Regals were there, including a 14,000-original-mile 1986 Grand National. Also present were probably about 10 other various muscle cars. I had bumped the order from 12 dozen to 16 dozen donuts and they lasted most of the event. We also provided Philadelphia soft pretzels, coffee and a assortment of soda and water.

A special thanz to Christina, Carrie, Devyn, Liddy, Melissa, Lalya, Noah, Riley, Eileen, and Jason Maxfield who all help make things run extremely smooth for the event. Without them the event would not be able to exist.

GNX TURBO SHIELD –

One of the things that made the GNX different from a regular Grand National was the fact that the turbo was slightly different. It’s the difference that required ASC to custom fabricate a new turbo shield. Describing the difference visually may seem difficult until you remove the special GNX turbo shield. Once the shield is removed, you can see why the factory turbo shield will not fit. The GNX turbo has a small extension in the front, which required ASC to notch the turbo bracket and weld a ¾ inch wide block so a special custom-made turbo shield would clear and basically look the same on the exterior as the stock turbo shield does.

Slightly longer bolts are required for the front two bolts, while the rear two bolt lengths remain the same on the GNX turbo shield. However, it’s important to remember that if a stock Turbo Regal turbo was substituted, the GNX turbo shield would still fit thus hiding the fact the turbo had been switched. This can be seen in Photo 1. You don’t necessarily have to remove the original GNX turbo shield to determine if the turbo is the correct GNX one. You can simply place your fingers under the shield in the front and see if you can feel the nose part of the GNX turbo as it will be close to the front of the original turbo shield. An incorrect turbo can really decrease the value on a real GNX. A possible issue you want to avoid at all costs. Having a reproduction GNX turbo shield instead of the original GNX turbo shield would also effect the value of a real GNX.

However from what I recall, at least 1 or 2 reproduction GNX turbo shields have been made over the last 30 years. To determine a reproduction GNX turbo shield from an original GNX turbo shield you would need to remove it and feel the weight of it and check the inside to see how it was welded together. Reproductions are a lot lighter than an original. I say all this because in this issue I have a nice slightly used 100% original GNX turbo shield for sale.

There can’t be many original GNX turbo shields floating around 30-plus years for sale, let alone an original one in good shape. See the Rare Parts section.

PHOTO 1 - The top left photo shows the inside of an original GNX turbo shield that I have for sale. Note the dirt spots on it. The top right photo shows the original GNX turbo shield off the 23,000-mile GNX I have for sale. On both GNX turbo shields, the welding is 100% the same as is the weight of both GNX turbo shields.

The bottom left photo shows the GNX turbo on the GNX minus the GNX turbo shield. You can clearly see the hump part on the front of the turbo, the notch on the side of the turbo bracket, and what looks like a ¾ inch metal block they welded to the front of the bracket for the 2 front bolts. The lower middle photo shows the 4 original turbo bolts and you can clearly see that 2 bolts are about ½ inch longer. This is due to that extension on the front of the turbo shield bracket. The bottom right shows the turbo shield as it appears on a GNX.

THE DAY BEFORE THE SPRING OPEN HOUSE –

I brought a full-size Maxine mannequin to the warehouse. This was an original store display for Hallmark Greeting cards that I had bought about 5 years ago. (I actually own two of them with her dog Floyd). They are a collectible item today.

I made up a sign she is holding with the following captions:

CAPTIONS...

I was a Team Leader for Paint Quality Control at the Buick Assembly Plant when the Turbo Regals were built. I am extremely proud of the quality of work we did on the Grand Nationals.

Previously I was a Walmart Greeter, but found the job too challenging so I quit.

I was fired from Burger King for wearing a McDonalds uniform.

In High School I was fortunate enough to have Abe Lincoln sign my Yearbook.

I recently failed a drug test when I applied at Slippery Ice Detailing.

The month prior, I applied for a job at GBodyParts.com but was turned down personally by Brian due to my inability to do simple math. He told me that he already employed enough people in Bethel that can make mistakes on an hourly basis.

I currently have a lawsuit with Hallmark for marketing the smaller doll versions of my likeness.

I’m working for Kirban Performance just for today on a trial basis.

Enjoy your time here today at Kirban Performance and save a Yum Yums donut for me.

PHOTO 2 - The top left photo shows Maxine behind the display table that shows some of our latest products, including the Grand National T-shirts we sell. The top right shows some of the 16 dozen Yum Yums donuts prior to the warehouse doors opened that Saturday morning. The bottom left photo shows Brian and Sandy of GBodyparts.com prior to show time. The bottom right shows just a few of the people that attended that were selling parts out of their cars.

PHOTO 3 – Shows just some of the various Turbo Regals that people brought to the event. In one photo, you can see a real ZL1 Camaro.

PHOTO 4 – The top left photo shows Eileen, her sister Liddy, and Liddy’s daughter Melissa. They worked the registration table. The top right photo shows Christina (who many of you know) at the order desk. The bottom left shows Carrie and Devyn (who turns 21 this year and just started working as a summer intern at Mack Truck on Monday.) The bottom right photo shows a very haggard me doing the raffles and No Reserve Auction.

LAST WEEK’S TURBO REGAL TRIVIA QUESTION ANSWERED –

When you unscramble the words from last week and put the letters in the proper order, the word we were seeking is “GE,” which stands for “General Electric.” The GE logo is on the powermaster grey brake switch.

The weekly trivia has proven to be a hit with our readers.

THIS WEEK’S TURBO REGAL TRIVIA QUESTION –

Here is this week’s Turbo Regal Trivia Question. You see three things on every 1984-1987 Turbo Regal, yet these three things were never formatted by Buick to function on the Regal car. Name the three things I am referring to.

Your answer must agree with mine. Email your educated guess to me – [email protected]

GNX #206 FOR SALE –

We are selling GNX #206 for one of our long-time customers. While several GNXs can be found for sale on the internet, what separates this one from the pack is not only does it have the GNX book and GNX jacket but the trunk is full of everything associated with a GNX and all the documents back to the original owner in 1988. It is a 2-owner car. This GNX has never been advertised since the current owner purchased it in 1998.

It has been garaged with the wheels off the ground. Even the steering wheel was covered. Most unusual is that the little rubber bumpers are on both doors that came on the car when it was shipped is still on the car! I did not count them but Molly’s signature appears on a dozen or more items, including the GNX jacket. Car has 100% original paint and 100% stock. Front and rear fillers have just been replaced in the last 30 days.

The car still smells factory new. Mileage is 23,839 and original. Car has the latest PA inspection. It’s close to 100% perfect in every regard. The factory paint is outstanding, a term you seldom see used on a black Regal of any version. The price tag is $99,900. To help ease the pain, since I hold a license, I am open to consider any car or cars in partial trade. Trade value cuts down the sales tax bite and out-of-pocket money. Remember, a partial trade car need not be a Turbo Regal. It can even be more than one car. Buying this example eliminates any surprises that some of the other GNXs seem to have that are for sale. This GNX is one that can only advance in value. You can email me for more photos. My email is [email protected]

WE4 FOR SALE UPDATE –

We have a buyer for this WE4. His financing has been approved thru JJ Best. He only had to put up 10% and they financed the balance. With that being said, this is proof that T-Types and Turbo-Ts are finally getting recognized as collectible cars. It’s not just the Grand Nationals and GNX models that continue to gain in value as good investments. It appears this fine example will be going to Columbus, Ohio once the deal has been completed.

NEW PRODUCT COMING DESIGNED FOR JEEP OFF-ROADING –

A local company has patented a clever new product and we are the marketing agent for this new product. Jeeps are well known for having over heating issues especially when used to pull a trailer or to go off-roading.

Until now the solution has been to install lovers or vents in the hood to let the heat escape. The problem with this is the vents are open all the time. So, when it rains water gets under the hood and can cause issues with the electronics under the hood.

This company has developed a vent system that is heat activated so the vents close automatically when the engine is cooled down. No wiring is involved. The vent system is flush mounted on the hood of any Jeep and can be painted. The vent system is made from 6061 T aluminum.

In the next several months we will be approaching various Jeep companies about this new product. This clever product will be on display at our Open House. The Jeep off road market is huge. This product can be adapted to virtually any flat hood to allow heat out of the engine compartment. Email me [email protected] for more details and photos.

TIP FROM KIRBAN –

It’s important to try and attend as many Turbo Buick events as possible. With cars aging, the events specifically for these cars are slowly dwindling down. It’s a good way to check of “original” versus “aftermarket” items.

NOTE ABOUT PHOTOS ON THE WEBSITE -

We have heard from a couple people that have viewed the photos on the website. Because these must be low-resolution photos to work on the Inner Circle segments on the website, any photos of text don't appear clear when enlarged.
