05-23-2012 Inner Circle

Greetings Turbo Regal Inner Circle Members - 05-23-2012

UPDATES & CORRECTIONS -

In our 5-9-2012 Inner Circle we pictured and mentioned a gathering of older cars also at the Best Western Motel the same weekend as the TurboBuick.com National, which was being held in Burlington. According to local resident Jerry Bodden, this was part of the Horseless Carriage Club Tour that was happening that weekend featuring cars built before 1925. Not a time period I am personally familiar with! However, seeing them gave me an idea for a short article next week!

It was also brought to my attention concerning Carol Shelby, he used the AC Ace to create the Shelby Cobra originally. The rest as they say, is history.

In last week's Inner Circle (5-16-2012) we showed two different radiator overflow bottles. From the several responses we got, it appears the one with the fill cap towards the back was used mostly on Oldsmobile Cutlass models. The Monte Carlo, took a different one altogether.

What I don’t know is what version, if any of these 3, were used on the Grand Prix during those years or did Pontiac have a different bottles?

Among collectors, I get the impression that Turbo Buick Regals, Oldsmobile Cutlass 442s, Hurst Olds, and Monte Carlo SS models are the sought-after models. The Pontiac Grand Prix doesn’t seem to have much of a following for those years (1984-1987.)

I can’t recall the Grand Prix back then even having a special designated performance model. Buick had the Turbo Regals, Chevrolet had the Monte Carlo SS, and Oldsmobile had the 442 and Hurst Olds during that time frame. To a lesser degree, they did make the 2 plus 2 model Grand Prix, as did Chevrolet make a similar model called the Areo Coupe. This is just my opinion, based on what you see today that are collectible G-body cars from 1984-1987.

I was able to purchase an aftermarket radiator overflow cap so I could photograph it along side a brand new GM original overflow radiator bottle cap.

PHOTO 1 - We show both radiator overflow caps in this picture. The one on the far left is the factory new GM radiator overflow cap. The one on the right is the new aftermarket cap. The caps are very similar. The only visible difference is in the wording. The wording on the GM cap is a brighter white and the lettering font style is bolder. Subtle difference to be sure, but nevertheless a slight difference. Remember, most aftermarket suppliers are in the replacement business and may not design the replacement part as an exact duplicate of the original.

PRICE INCREASE -

We had to raise the price slightly on our #6510 1984-1987 Regal - Factory-style 9-piece Trunk Kit. The price is now $179.95 plus shipping.

This kit is one of our most popular trunk kits based on the original optional trunk kit that GM offered for the Regals back in 1984-1987. It comes with a free Trunk Kit Installation DVD.

BACK TRACKING TO SPRING CARLISLE -

As reported earlier, we attended Spring Carlisle. This event remains one of the largest Swap meets in the U.S. The event covers 150 acres with just over 8,000 vendors. In other words, you have to love to walk and buy items that are easy to carry!

I usually go on a Wednesday before the major crowds come later in the week.

The first group of photos shows something that impressed me. It had not been opened for thirty years, so it was in mint condition and in perfect working order. It's hard to pin down the year it was produced, but my educated guess is around the late 1930s prior to the war starting. I think the seller said it was made in Germany.

PHOTO 2 - These four photos show this very intricate cut away view of a fully-working scaled-down automobile engine and drivetrain. The top left photo shows an overall view of the drivetrain. The top right photo shows a close up of the six cylinder engine. The lower left photo is a close up of the transmission. The lower right photo shows looking at the front of the display.

You could see the rear end gears engage, the rear brake shoes engage on the rear drums, the driveshaft turning, the steering turning, each piston working properly, and the valve springs and by electric each spark plug firing in the correct order. The fan blade turned as well. If I remember correctly, I think the seller said it was made for some sort of teaching method at a school. I had never seen anything like this. The seller was asking $1,600 for it. It's doubtful many of these were ever produced originally, and to find one as pristine as this working model is today would be extremely rare to find.

PHOTO 3 - This top left photo shows a bright red Camaro for sale at Carlisle sporting a mere 200 miles. The top right photo shows it could be bought for $32,900. I thought the 1968 Camaro shown in the lower left photo was a good deal. It's a very nice overall condition 350 with a 4 speed. If I recall, it also had low miles. The lower right photo shows it was only $24,900, and was a one owner with a lot of original paperwork, which was lying up on the dash pad.

PHOTO 4 - I did see one 1987 Grand National for sale. This first photo shows the 1987 Grand National for sale. It had 28,000 original miles with a $19,500 price tag. The second photo shows some of the original paperwork that was included with the Grand National. For rare Buicks, the one in this third photo would be my pick. It's the last of the full-size Buicks turbocharged models. The last photo shows the information on this unique Buick. I don’t recall what the asking price.

More photos from Spring Carlisle next week!

GNX OWNERS IMPORTANT NEWS UPDATE -

I think I have located a correct-looking-style muffler. It is U.S. made. All the dimensions are very close to what originally came on a GNX, including the oval shaped body of the muffler. Currently I am trying to round up some of them from various sources. This is one of the toughest parts to find because of its unusual small size.

It doesn’t matter if your GNX has a lot of miles on it or sits unused, the mufflers rust out. Muffler shops can fabricate new tailpipes without too much trouble. The problem is finding a center-to-center inlet and outlet muffler, 12 inch long oval muffler body that is only about 3½" high by 7½" wide is a problem. I believe the inlet and outlet are 2" or 2¼" diameter. As you are aware, space is quite limited where the stock mufflers are located due to the suspension and the way the exhaust is routed. These are aluminized steel.

Most aftermarket mufflers of this size have a round body, which can hang down and be visible under the car. The mufflers I have found are very close to the original GNX mufflers. (The outlet and inlet is about 1" longer but can be cut off). The projected price with supplies being limited will be around $199.95 per pair plus $20 shipping. Even if your GNX doesn’t need mufflers, these are a good investment.

If you want to get on a list for a pair of these unique mufflers, email me direct [email protected]

We expect to have some by mid June. We will notify you when we have a pair for you. We will have more details and photos at that time. Years ago we used to sell a Midas muffler that was similar to the GNX. Unfortunately, Midas no longer makes their own mufflers.

BREAKING NEWS - GNX FOR SALE -

I just got word of from one of our customers who has decided to sell his GNX. The car has approximately 103,000 miles and it has been repainted. It runs and drives great. He has only driven it a few thousand miles since purchasing it 3 years ago. This car has been slightly modified. It does not have the original turbo.

He does have the correct numbered GNX book, but no GNX jacket. He has other performance cars, so he decided to sell this one. Car is priced between $42,500 and $45,000 and is in Virginia. There are not many out there in this price range. If you are interested, email me - [email protected] - for more info.

NOTE ABOUT PHOTOS ON THE WEBSITE - We have heard from a couple people that have viewed the photos on the website. Because these have to be low-resolution photos to work on the Inner Circle segments on the website, any photos of text don't appear clear when enlarged. This is a problem when you are trying to see numbers, such as those on the VIN labels or pages from Options booklet. Also, because of photo reproduction and computer screen variations, the colors may not be true to the actual product or photo.

If you would like to have us email you any photo at the higher resolution for viewing, just email us and we will email them to you. Be sure to be specific on which pictures you want to see - Reference Inner Circle date and photo number 1, 2, 3 or 4 - [email protected].
