NEW UPGRADED 1986-1987 TURBO REGAL UPGRADED ALUMINUM RADIATOR -

This new reproduction 1986-1987 Turbo Regal upgraded aluminum radiator is now available. Our company supplied Max Performance an original radiator to make this radiator. Max Performance owns Pypes Exhaust, which makes the popular exhaust systems we carry. Cold Case is the name of their radiator division.

This new upgraded aluminum radiator has undergone several months of testing by Nick Micale in Arizona in one of his Turbo cars.

See the New Products section for full details, our part #7457, priced at $379.95. All the factory fittings and radiator cap fit. Not only are you getting a more efficient radiator, but you are saving just over 10 pounds over the stock radiator. A thick grade of aluminum was used in production. This is not a flimsy thin-walled radiator. We now have them in stock for immediate delivery.

PHOTO 1 - In the top left photo we show the new Cold Case upgraded radiator specifically made for the 1986-1987 Turbo Regal application. The other photos show comparison view of an original radiator and this new aluminum radiator. All the stock fittings, radiator cap, and stock top radiator plate will fit this radiator. This is the same radiator that we had on display at our Open House last month.

1987 BUICK GRAND NATIONAL FOR SALE -

One of our Virginia customers is selling his Dad’s original 34,508-mile Grand National. It has been family owned since new. Car has been garage kept and covered its entire life. Car has T-Tops, power windows, rear defroster, manual door locks, AM/FM radio, Kenne Bell stainless exhaust, upgraded turbo hoses, and R34 in the AC unit.

The SPID trunk ID label has been personally signed by Molly at Kirban’s Reunion event in 2007. All maintenance records are available. Car is located in northern Virginia. The price is $25,000. Call George at 703-999-9536 for more information and photos.

PHOTO 2 - Here are four photos of this original 1987 Grand National for sale.

SPEAKING OF MOLLY -

Speaking of Molly and our 2007 Reunion, I have recently been informed by Paul Castle that I will be auctioning off Paul’s one-of-a-kind Grand National go-kart body. This will be the crown jewel of the No Reserve auction on Tuesday night, June 27th at his shop in Lemont, Illinois. The winner will also get a certificate showing that the go-kart Grand National body was painted by my son Darrell Kirban, and photographic proof Molly signed the trunk lid. Plus I will personally sign the Grand National go-kart that night if the buyer wants me to. Only three of these Grand National go-kart bodies have been made. I own a half of one in my personal collection. This is the only other one that has been signed by Molly.

As long as the starting bid has been met, this rare Grand National go-kart body shell will go to the highest bidder. This is the event that Paul is hosting at his shop in Lemont, Illinois and I am handling the auction and seminar.

Paul assures me he will have several other unique signed items for me to auction off as well.

This event has no rain date, I am speaking two days later at the GTO National convention.

Already Paul is hearing from customers that plan to attend, some as far away as over 150 miles. See Coming Events for more details. Be sure to email Paul direct if you are attending and number in your party! Remember bring any turbo cores you want to cash in, parts you want to sell or trade. I will have a gift for each attendee and Paul will be giving a Silver Bullet T-shirt to each owner that shows up with a Turbo Regal. We will have a 50/50 raffle and, of course, our popular M&M contest.

PHOTO 3 - The photo to the left shows the cut in half Grand National go-kart that Darrell made and painted for my 60th birthday in 2007. That is an enlarged photo of me in the driver seat. This now sits in a special place in my office at home. The photo to the right shows Molly signing the Grand National go-kart body that I will be auctioning off for Paul Castle June 27th, Tuesday night, in Lemont, Illinois.

This will be the crown jewel of the No Reserve auction that Paul and I will be doing at his shop. A must-attend event if you reside anywhere near Lemont, Illinois. I don’t think anyone is coming any further than I am!

A LOOK AT WIPER BLADES FOR TURBO REGALS -

Wiper blades are probably one of the most overlooked parts on the exterior of your car, probably because they are seldom used on a show car that rarely sees the rain.

I have recently conducted a little research on wiper blades. Years ago I had installed black wiper arms and black wiper blades on my Turbo-T, which is NOT correct on a chrome package 1987 Turbo-T.

In an effort to make my car more original, I have now switched back to the correct satin bare metal wiper arms and blades. They are not easy to find as no one has reproduced either the bare metal satin wiper arms or matching wiper blades.

All 1986 Turbo Regals had black wiper arms and blades. In 1987 the only Turbo Regals that had the bare satin metal wiper arms and blades would be the Turbo-Ts and Turbo-T Limiteds that had the chrome package.

Granted, regular Regals used satin bare metal-looking wiper arms and blades, but the numbers just don’t justify companies making them. Most, if not all of the wiper blades in auto stores today are black metal or rubber coated in various formats. You can’t find black ones that are 100% correct unless someone has some very old Trico inventory. Trico was the supplier to GM.

I finally got a nice pair of original bare brushed metal wiper arms in one of the junkyards. Finding a matching set of wiper blades proved to be more difficult. Our wiper blades are 18 inches long. The format is the pin-style, which was later replaced with the hook style wiper arm. Most wiper blades you buy today are designed for either wiper arm, but of course don’t look original.

I found a solution. It’s not 100% correct, but it’s close enough to the real thing to work in my application. It may work in your application as well, if you have a chrome package Turbo Regal.

It turns out some of the older GM cars used a pin-style wiper arm and the blade was a grey-like bare metal. The only difference is, the longest wiper blade I could find was 16 inches, meaning it was two inches shorter than what our cars take. This did not matter to me, so I bought a pair for my car. NOTE - In reality it’s one inch shorter in each end.

If you are LOOKING FOR a set in bare grey metal appearance for your 1987 Turbo-T with the chrome package, here is the info. I bought them from Ames Performance - 1-800-421-2637, part # PG580P, listed for the 1969-1977 GM cars at $15 per blade.

Trico was the original manufacturer for GM, from what I understand. These are a reproduction and lack the Trico trademark stamping. Keep in mind, these are just 16 inches long, not 18 inches long.

However, at $30 for the pair plus shipping it helps solve a piece of the puzzle, if you have a 1987 Turbo Regal with the chrome package like I do. My black set of wiper arms, complete with black wiper blades, is for sale in the Rare Parts section. Basically they are like new since my car has always been garaged, and the wipers have been used mybe a half dozen times in 10 years of ownership.

PHOTO 4 - We show a used original bare metal 18 inch wiper blade alongside the new 16 inch bare metal wiper blade that I purchased. Keep in mind, the original wiper blades had a solid bare metal bar and not slots like many aftermarket ones you see in stores today. We will probably be offering brand new correct black wiper blades sometime in the next ten days. It’s the bare metal ones like pictured here that I have had zero luck finding in the correct 18 inch length. The black wiper blades we will be offering will be original and the correct 18 inches in length.

1987 TURBO-T FOR SALE -

As we mentioned last week, we now have a deal in place to purchase this one-owner, garage kept, totally stock 1987 Turbo-T with less than 72,000 miles on it. I will be getting this car later this week. The owner has recently retired, so I imagine he is probably close to my age. The car is a hardtop.

I do have one very interested person already on this car that may want it for his son.

So, I am giving him first right of refusal to see if this car meets his criteria. This will be the first Turbo car I have purchased for resale since the high-mileage GNX I bought a few years back. Since cars are now being 30 years old, it is very difficult to buy originals, and at a price that works for me as a reseller. Having sold over 325 of Turbo Regals, I feel I have made my mark in the Turbo Regal field.

This seller wants to see it go to a good home and doesn’t want the hassle of dealing with the public.

I AM SEEING A TREND -

Starting with the recent NC Turbo Nationals/Richard Clark event, I am seeing a trend of the scarcity of used Turbo Regal parts for sale. I saw very little in good used Turbo Regal parts for sale at that event.

Even at the race track, hardly any racers had used Turbo Regal parts for sale.

My point is, it’s getting tougher to find Turbo Regal used parts for these cars. So, if you are looking for a Turbo Regal to buy, it’s best to buy one that is mostly stock. Otherwise be prepared to spend time and money searching for the missing pieces.

RESTORING A TURBO REGAL TODAY IS LIKE SOLVING A PUZZLE -

Since the Turbo Regals are 30 years old, looking for certain original parts can be a challenge and often times frustrating. While eBay offers some answers, it can be daunting when the part you had the winning bid on, arrives and looks nothing like the picture or description you read prior to placing your winning bid.

The same can also hold true when buying a used part from other sources. It’s not always the case, but you may be disappointed, unless it is a NOS part. Everyone’s idea of near mint or mint, may fall way short of your expectations.

Most of our rare parts, new and used, we get in spurts from other car owners or at various events. I try to buy only mint or near mint parts to avoid possible issues from any of my customers.

There is little doubt that the more original you make your Turbo Regal, the more valuable it becomes if and when you plan to sell it. The days of buying a highly-modified Turbo Regal and trying to make it original is a tough project to undertake unless you have another Turbo Regal car for parts.

If you like doing puzzles, taking a modified Turbo Regal and making it as close to stock as possible makes for a great challenge. Just trying to find the parts you need to complete the puzzle can be quite challenging today. Ten or fifteen years ago, it would have been easier to do than it is today.

That is why when I was buying Turbo Regals I focused on mostly stock cars to buy.

The biggest challenge I used to have come up because a good number of these cars had various alarm systems in them. To remove the alarms I would disconnect one wire at a time and restart the car as I had no idea how most of these systems were wired into the cars. In some cases the butcher work people did to install an alarm was amazing. I actually bought cars that had two and three systems in them.

ONE JOB NOBODY WANTS -

I often wonder if the dictator of North Korea employs a food tester before each meal he consumes. It’s not a job that would garner many applicants, in my opinion.

1987 GRAND NATIONAL FOR SALE - 49 ACTUAL MILES -

This rare 1987 Grand National has never been dealer prepped and has only travelled a mere 49 miles! It is a T-Top model. It has had three owners and is part of an estate sale. It’s been garaged and covered and was started at least once a week until 2011. All the documents and chain of ownership go with the car. The Grand National would need a good cleaning and fluids flushed before it could be put on the road.

One of your last remaining chances to own a brand new 1987 Grand National 30 years later! The price is $65,000. If you are interested, and would like to see photos, you can email me [email protected]

TIP FROM KIRBAN -

If you are in the midst of bringing your pride and joy back to its near original stock condition, try not to get discouraged. With the cars now 30 years old and older, finding certain original parts can be a daunting task.

Also, remember rear main leaks are common. Even my personal 1987 Turbo-T leaves drips on the garage floor. You just got to accept it! My 1996 Ford Ranger pick-up truck, with 188,000 miles on it, doesn’t leak anything anywhere on the garage floor.

TIPS AND IDEAS YOU HAVE TRIED -

If you have a tip or a discovery that you found that works on your Turbo Regal, drop us an email giving us the details so we can pass the info on to our readers. Remember, even with my knowledge, I don’t know it all. Simply email me at - [email protected]

KIRBAN SEMINAR TURBO REGAL EVENT - LEMONT, ILLINOIS -
Tuesday June 27th, 2017, 6 until 9 pm?

Paul has recently informed me that he will give everyone that brings a Turbo Regal to this event a FREE Silver Billet T-shirt. I will also be doing a mini No Reserve auction! This is a rare opportunity to hear one of my seminars in your area. Since I am speaking on Hurst later that week at the GTOAA National meet, I will also show you some of the very rare Hurst items and artwork that I have in my collection.

The location is Castle Performance, 220 River Street, Lemont, Illinois. Since I will be in Illinois as a speaker later that week I have arranged with Paul Castle and the local Buick GS Club to coordinate this event. Free pizza and drinks courtesy of the Chicagoland Chapter of the GSCA Club!

NOTE - If you are planning on attending this seminar at Castle Performance in Lemont, Illinois, please email - [email protected] so we have an idea how many people to expect.

I will have a specific gift for each attendee. I will have some tagged and bagged Turbo parts with me and the usual M&Ms contest. This should be a fun time.

I have a special guest that will also be attending. He has been making a certain Turbo Regal part for us for over 25 years. You probably have it on your Turbo Regal.

We will have a special gift for all attendees! Hope to see many of my Illinois customers there.

Paul and the local GS Club request you bring a lawn chair. Food and drinks will be provided. If you reside anywhere near Lemont, Illinois, we hope you can attend and bring your Turbo Regal. It’s also open to any muscle car. I would love to meet some of my customers that may have never been to the GS Nationals. This is a rare opportunity, since I don’t travel long distances much anymore.

NOTE - You can bring any cores - powermasters, mass air flow sensors, turbos, or steering wheels - for a Letter of Credit for parts you may need for your car. It saves you shipping.

As with all my seminars, I will be doing a M&Ms contest in honor of my parents. The Don Garlits autographed connecting rod will make a nice prize!

NEW PRODUCTS FROM US -

1986-1987 Buick Turbo Regal -
UPGRADED ALUMINUM RADIATOR

Because of the age of these cars, the radiator has lost some of its efficency. Also the factory core size is marginal at best.

These upgraded radiators are 100% brand new, and made by COLD-CASE, a division of Max Performance, who also owns Pypes Exhaust.

This new radiator is bare aluminum. It has two 1" tubes, which are bigger than stock. The core size is 1/4" wider and the end tanks are 1/4" wider.

This radiator has undergone several months of testing by Nick Micale in his car in Arizona.
The original radiator weighs 25.6 lbs, this radiator weighs 15.2 lbs. The overall weigh savings over the stock radiator is about 10 lbs.

This upgraded radiator is designed so it fits exactly like the factory radiator and accepts all the factory original oil and transmission coolant fittings. The factory radiator cap will also fit this radiator. The reproduction radiator top plate and the custom top plate will also fit.

Our first photo shows this new upgraded aluminum radiator. Our other photos show a comparison views of an original radiator and this new aluminum radiator.

NOTE - If you plan to paint the radiator, we highly recommend Eastwood’s Radiator Black 12 oz Satin Finish, part #10340Z @ $12.99 per can. A typical radiator requires 2 coats of paint. Normal engine paints are too thick for radiator use, which will interfere with heat transfer and block air flow over the cooling fins. Also, standard paint tends to flake off metal radiator tanks. The Radiator Black is specially formulated to solve these problems, will not interfere with heat transfer, and is heat resistant to 300°F.

NOTE - Shipping cost is based on an oversized package.

Another nice engine restoration item.

7457 - 1986-1987 Buick Turbo Regal - Upgraded Aluminum Radiator - $379.95

1986-1987 Buick Turbo Regal -
CUSTOM RADIATOR TOP PLATE & HARDWARE

In many cases, the original metal radiator top plate that holds the top of the radiator and secures the housing for the electric fan may be rusted or bent.

This radiator top plate is unique to the 1986-1987 Turbo Regals, making it difficult to find a nice used one today.

This radiator top plate is made by Spoolfool but does not look like the stock original steel radiator top plate. It is fiberglass and not metal. It attaches the same way, however the top surface is smooth. This gives it a more custom look.

Each one is done in black gelcoat polished to a high gloss shine. It weighs only 1 pound versus 3 pounds for the metal plate. It saves a small amount of weight, but more importantly, it will never rust!

It comes with 5 powder-coated black bolts, which are the correct size for this plate, and easy-to-follow directions.

NOTE - Our first picture show this new CUSTOM Radiator Top Plate and Hardware, #7776. Our second photo shows the stock Reproduction Radiator Top Plate & Hardware, #7774. The second photo also shows the placement of this plate in the lower photos.

A nice finishing touch for under the hood.

1986-1987 Buick Turbo Regal -
Reproduction BLACK ENGINE OIL DIP STICK TUBE

This high-quality reproduction steel dip stick tube has the correct black EDP coating on it.

This reproduction is the correct replacement for GM part #25525746, which has not been available from GM for several years.

If you ever have to rebuild the engine, you will need this dip stick tube. The bracket on the original dip stick tube usually gets twisted when you try and unbolt it from the engine.

An excellent replacement item for any engine restoration.

1978-1988 G-Body & A-Body (Including Buick Turbo Regal) -
Reproduction DOOR SILL PLATES (2) SET and HARDWARE

Over the years the original plates in your G-body car may have been dented, scratched, or corroded.

These high-quality reproduction door sill plates replaces GM part #20008170.
They are complete with the small “Body by Fisher” logo plate in the center. The quality and fit are extremely close to the GM originals. The only difference is a slightly thicker mill of aluminum. Each door sill plate comes with 4 screws.

If your installing new carpet or freshening up the interior, this is almost a "must have" item.
This are slightly thicker aluminum. You will be able to buff and sand any scratches out when necessary. Plates come with the “Body by Fisher” stickers in place and include 8 new screws.

NOTE - These will ONLY fit two-door G-Body and A-Body models, including Buick Turbo Regals.

An excellent replacement item for any exterior restoration. If you’re installing new carpet or freshening up the interior, this is almost a "must have" item.

1986-1987 Buick Turbo Regal -
AC DELCO HEATER WATER VALVE

This is a brand new, correct AC Delco heater water valve for 1986-1987 Buick Turbo Regals.

When new, the valve has a gold anodized look. Over time, the unit corrodes and could leak anti-freeze. Aftermarket valves do not look original since they are made in plastic.

It’s a good idea to replace this valve to avoid any leakage problems.

Another excellent replacement for the engine compartment.

1978-1988 G-Body (Including 1984-1987 Buick Turbo Regal Models) -
Reproduction 4″ x 10″ REAR SPEAKERS (2) SET

It has been hard to locate a suitable 4″ x 10″ speaker for the 1984-1987 Turbo Regal rear package shelf. The space is too narrow to use anything but a 4″ x 10″ speaker. It must also fit the factory cage bracket.

We found this suitable reproduction 8 ohm speaker. You do have to replace the connector ends, since the factory plug on the harness will not fit the terminals on this new speaker.

These fit the factory metal cage that GM used to secure the original rear speakers.

Over the years, age and sunlight have probably cracked the original speakers. These are a perfect replacement.

A nice upgrade for any interior restoration.

I took my Turbo-T out several times last week when the weather was nice. The car always gets a thumbs-up from those that appreciate a fine example of U.S. muscle performance from thirty years ago. Seems the more I drive it, the better it runs.
