Greetings Turbo Regal Inner Circle Members 05-27-2020 –

UPDATE ON SHIPPING –

We are still able to ship daily, both by mail and UPS. Some parts are getting difficult to get. Thank you for your patience. Although Pennsylvania is still virtually locked down, we can still ship and receive packages at our location.

GETTING DELIVERIES FROM OUR SUPPLIERS –

The supply chain has vastly changed from the time prior to the virus. Some of our suppliers are still shut down. Others have just a skeleton crew working. For many of these companies that have skeleton crews, the work load is tremendous and getting orders from them to us is taking 10 days or longer. In some cases, getting parts (such as GM parts) is very difficult due to the shutdown in Michigan.

MORE PARTS PICTURED FOR SALE LISTED UNDER THE RARE PARTS SECTION –

We found a few more collectible items. Each of these items can be seen listed for sale under the Rare Parts section.

PHOTO 1 – The top left photo shows the fiberglass copy of an actual 1986-1987 Grand National wheel which has been painted to closely resemble the original wheel. Original correct lug nuts were used and also a brand new factory Grand National center cap. It has a hook on the back to hang on a wall. The top right photo shows a popular decal that we sold in the late 1980s and early 1990s - “We Brake for Corvettes.” At one time a bumper sticker was also made and it can be seen in the GNX book. This leads one to believe the quote was done by someone at the Buick plant!

The bottom left photo shows a “Bad to the Bone” key fob we had made about 10 years ago and a dash plaque from our 2011 Reunion event which featured Miss Hurst. The bottom right photo shows an award for the “Most Uniquely Powered Buick Award” from September 4, 1994 at Raceway Park. It was an award we had made up for the event that appears to have never been given out.

1997 MUSTANG COBRA FOR SALE –

At the country dealership that I help with and have a sales license for they just acquired a really nice 1997 Mustang Cobra from a collector. It is a manual shift, 99% stock, garage kept, 2-owner car with 126,000 miles. It’s a non-smoker car, Kirban-quality inside and out, never abused and adult owned. While it’s true this may not be high on the collector chart, it’s a chance to own a reasonably priced Mustang performance car and have some fun this summer. Treat it right and its value will not decrease. The car is the right color combination. You won’t find many performance cars this clean, in any brand you can buy for under ten grand today.

The price is $8,495. For more info, contact me [email protected] Car is 10 minutes from our location.

PHOTO 2 - The top left photo shows the exterior of the passenger side. The top right photo shows a closeup of one of the factory wheels. All 4 wheels are mint and tires are like new. The bottom left photo shows the engine compartment. The bottom right photo shows the interior.

THE HURST DUAL-GATE SHIFTER –

I think most Turbo Regal owners would agree that on the Turbo models with the console shifter, the shifter was wimpy at best. It would have been nice had Buick offered a Hurst dual-gate shifter as an option to compliment the powertrain. AVC solved that problem by selling a drop-in Hurst quarter stick and a new top plate for the console. That was one early upgrade we did with our 1987 Grand National along with the AVC GNX-style dash.

The wimpy shifter handle with the plastic insert is a design that goes back to at least 1978 in the G-body format. I can attest to that as at one time I owned a 1978 Olds Calais, which was a fancy model with bucket seats, console and gauges. The 1978 Oldsmobile Calais used the same shifter handle. This probably explains why 30-plus years later GM still has those handles in their inventory!

I was just lucky enough to grow up in the same neighborhood as Hurst. Hurst bounced around from a few small locations until they had a new huge building built in 1964 in Warminster, Pennsylvania. I even own the original blueprint for that building! There is no denying their quality or their influence among the 3 big U.S. automakers.

I used to do the towing for the local Dodge dealer and I remember when new models came out Hurst would “borrow” them and design a shifter to fit the various new Dodge models. I can remember driving to the plant in my 1949 Olds Club Coupe fitted with a 4-speed hydromatic transmission and seeing which shifter handle worked best. It had to be one that would clear my T-bird bucket seats. I bought my 1949 Oldsmobile club coupe out of Philadelphia while still serving in the Army. It had a 1957 Olds V8 under the hood converted to a 12-volt system. I will try and find some photos of my Oldsmobile Club Coupe for another story

In the early 1960s Hurst created the “His and Hers” shifter with a lock-out feature so your spouse could not use the individual gear selections. A clever gimmick that Pontiac added to their Grand Prix model as an option around the1962 time frame.

That was almost 60 years ago now. The Hurst dual-gate really took root with the 1967 Pontiac GTO and the later 1968 Pontiac GTO. Why it was not offered in the 1969 and 1970 GTO I have no idea even though the consoles were the same. This format of having dual-gates to manually shift an automatic transmission can be found in most cars today. Hurst still makes various versions of the dual-gate for Dodge Challengers and other car models as well.

In my private collection, I have the original hand done artwork of the first design Hurst Dual-Gate shifter with the lock-out feature. This ad would be used in several of the popular car magazines around 1961 and 1962. Hurst was a big spender on full-page ads in Hot Rod magazine at the time. Securing a deal with Pontiac Motor Division in the early 1960s and the new GTO was a huge game changer for Hurst. (More about that connection in future Inner Circle issues). Later, other GM car lines would come on board with few exceptions. I am fairly certain Pontiac would be their biggest car line customer based mostly on the popularity of the GTO. You have to remember, by 1966 Pontiac made over 80,000 GTOs in that one year alone. I know, I bought my first GTO, a 1964, within 60 days of returning from Vietnam in 1967.

George Hurst with his marketing skills and successful products, such as engine mount adapters, manual shifters, dual-gate shifters, and the Jaws of Life, came on the scene at the perfect time. Sure along the way some of their products initially did not sell very well, such as the Hurst Hatches (T-Tops) and Hurst wheels. Today try and find a nice matched set of Hurst wheels for under $5 grand. You would be lucky!

The Jaws of Life has proven to be a life saver that is still used today by many first responders. The name of the product “Jaws of Life” is perfect. It does seem unusual that the Jaws of Life was created and marketed by a company that made shifters for cars. The Jaws of Life was sold off years ago to another company not related to the automotive aftermarket.

George Hurst sold the company he founded around 1985 to Mr Gasket. The entire operation was moved to Ohio. Since that time, Hurst has changed hands several more times.

PHOTO 3 – The photo on the left shows the original hand done artwork of the ad for the new Hurst Dual-Gate shifter from around 1961. In the same picture, you see the finished ad that would be used in several car magazines. This is back when art was all done by hand. The photo to the right shows George Hurst’s wife (I believe) and George with a huge Hurst dual-gate display. This has to be from around 1961-1962 at one of the big car vendor’s shows. It may have been at Sema. I wish I had that display today, I never saw it even back in the mid-1960s. I can only surmise it was destroyed. It looks like it was well made. It would be worth a small fortunate today to any Hurst collector.

NOTE - The dates in the above article are approximate as I am going from memory. It is also important to know Hurst made many, many other products than the ones I mention. The ones I mention are the most notable. The Hurst wheels never enjoyed much sales because Hurst could not interest any car company to add the Hurst wheel as a factory option. However, since the Hurst plant was in my area, it was not uncommon for me to see Hurst wheels on various muscle cars in the late 1960s.

MORE INFORMATION ON THE BUICK RECALL DECALS –

Buick referred to the various recalls they issued as “Buick Dealer Product Campaigns”. The two main ones that many of you are aware of related to the Turbo Regals, was the brake switch and the E-Prom that affected emissions. Once the campaign was completed a small sticker was filled out. On the first line the campaign number was written, the second line the code for the dealer was written in. The third line the date the recall was corrected was written in. This sticker provided proof to that car owner that the recall(s) were done.

So, as the various recalls were conducted you could possibly have several of the small white Buick recall stickers affixed to the radiator support. Most Turbo Regal owners only made sure they got the brake switch recall done. Failure to have that recall done could have had disastrous results.

In Photo 4 below we show the description explaining what I wrote above and that it should be typed in or written with a ball point pen. It also goes on to state to first clean the surface of the radiator support and apply the campaign label where it is readily visible. In most cases, the Service Department would affix it very near the routing decal as I initially stated.

PHOTO 4 - This photo is a copy of a portion of one of the Buick Dealer Product Campaigns. It backs up my earlier comments about the Recall decal. You can also see our reproduction of this Buick Recall decal is slightly different than the one pictured, and is based on an actual decal from a car. It appears Buick used at least two different versions of this Recall decal. They are sold as a pair with the reproduction air cleaner decal #7844 for $8.95. Just two more small decals to restore your Turbo Regal to original.

GOT A PRODUCT IDEA OR SOMETHING YOU CURRENTLY MAKE –

We welcome your idea(s). We buy from several part timers that make various parts for us. I even buy a part from a gentleman that sells used Ford Ranger truck parts. I sold him several years ago a bunch of Ford Ranger parts when I was restoring my little 1996 Ranger pickup truck. You would be amazed at how many compliments I get from people that see my little 1996 Ford Ranger. I never realized they had such a huge following. I bought it in July 2013 with 140,000 miles on it. Now has 196,000. It’s been an amazing value. It doesn’t leak anything and AC has never required any work! The Ranger has zero rust, and all-original paint.

I buy used vacuum brake pedals from another supplier for many years and Jeep shafts from still another supplier. The translator brackets are made by another source. My point is, we deal with many small-time sellers.

I would like to hear what you have to offer or maybe it’s a part you made for your Turbo Regal. You may be surprised that there may just be a market for it.

Some of the best ideas come from unusual sources. I probably would have never gotten involved in getting made a billet adjustable fuel regulator for the older 5.0 powered Mustangs unless one company approached me years ago. To date we have sold over 35,000 of them, almost all have been wholesaled. That market is just as strong today.

Also, if you have any good used original parts, why not cash them in for a Letter of Credit to buy something you need. Used parts are hard for us to come by and we have a ready market. Over 3,500 members get this Inner Circle in their inbox every Wednesday 3 pm eastern time. You would be surprised at some of the small items that are huge sellers for us.

UPDATE ON NEW GRAND NATIONAL T-SHIRTS AND HATS –

We just placed our initial order for two different designs of GM licensed Grand National T-shirts and baseball-style Grand National hats. We should have inventory and pictures in next week’s Inner Circle.

NEW PRODUCTS FROM US –

1984-1987 Buick Turbo Regal -
SEMI-BLACK EXTERIOR TRIM SPRAY PAINT

This spray paint is semi-black and is a excellent color match for the  black-out trim moldings that was used on certain Turbo Regal models.

It is made by the same company that color matches the grey, dark blue, burgundy paint we also sell from this same source.

It dries within minutes. While many variations of semi-black exist we found this to be a very close match. Remember, no paint color is going to match trim that has been exposed for over 30 years of sun and weather.

This is ideal to do the taillight trim parts and the plastic headlight bezels.

NOTE - You may also be interested in these other spray paints - #7419 - Aluminum Grey Last Blast High Temperature Formula Spray Paint and #6822 - Interior Spray Paint (grey, dark blue or burgundy

NOTE - Spray paint can ONLY be shipped by UPS GROUND… because of restrictions, we CANNOT ship paint by AIR.

Another excellent product for any restoration.

1986-1987 Buick Turbo Regal -
REPRODUCTION AIR CLEANER DECAL (1) &
REPRODUCTION BRAKE SWITCH RECALL DECAL (1) SET

We are offering these two decals as a set.

The reproduction Air Cleaner Decal measures 1-5/16″ x 1-1/4″ and is white with black lettering, which is the identical size and color as the original.

It goes on the side of the top portion of the metal factory air cleaner box. There is no precise location but generally can be found on the side towards the driver’s fender.

The reproduction Brake Switch Recall Decal measures 2″ x 1″ and is white with black lettering, which is the identical size and color as the original.

There was no exact placement for where the Service Department would put the Recall decal showing it was completed. Generally, it was put on the core support near the Belt Routing decal. A date was written in along with the other related information, which showed the recall was completed. The recall related to the powermaster brake switch was not issued until the fall of 1990.

NOTE - You may also be interested in these related parts - #6502 Reproduction “ACCESSORY BELT ROUTING” Decal, #6507 Reproduction “FAN CAUTION” Decal, and #6537 STOCK Replacement K & N Air Filter.

NOTE - ABOUT LINKS IN THE INNER CIRCLE -

We have heard from a couple people that have had problems with the links in our Inner Circle.

When we check the links, they work fine. However, if you are not able to be directed to the exact website page or internet site, you can "copy" and "paste" the link into the URL in your browser (such as Safari, Firefox, Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, etc.) If it doesn't link in one browser, it may work in another.

Most people having problems are using Internet Explorer. If you are having issues with links, try another browser to see if it works.

You may need to "UPDATE" your browser to be use you are using the current version.

NOTE ABOUT PHOTOS ON THE WEBSITE -

We have heard from a couple people that have viewed the photos on the website. Because these must be low-resolution photos to work on the Inner Circle segments on the website, any photos of text don't appear clear when enlarged. This is a problem when you are trying to see numbers, such as those on the VIN labels or pages from Options booklet. Also, because of photo reproduction and computer screen variations, the colors may not be true to the actual product or photo.

If you would like to have us email you any photo at the higher resolution for viewing, just email us and we will email them to you. Be sure to be specific on which pictures you want to see - Reference Inner Circle date and photo number 1, 2, 3 or 4 - [email protected]

ABOUT OUR EMAILS -

Any inquiries concerning used parts, you must email me direct - [email protected] - and I will answer you. However, if I fail to answer you within 24 hours, please email us again. Since expanding into used parts, I get a lot of emails and sometimes I may forget your request or may not remember who requested the item.

IN CLOSING –

Our area is expected to enter the yellow zone next week. I don’t think they have an exact timetable when this area will go to the green zone. I know one thing, my first haircut after all these months of hibernation will be a real challenge for the barber who cuts my hair.
