Greetings Turbo Regal Inner Circle Members 06-08-2016 -

RIP MUHAMMAD ALI -

Unless you live under a rock, you’ve heard that Muhammad Ali passed away late last week. His life touched so many people outside of the boxing ring that he is called one of the greatest Americans of our generation. I think this Friday most of Lousiville, Kentucky will virtually come to a standstill as he is laid to rest in the city where he was born. I remember him taking the stand on Vietnam and the draft, since that was the timeframe I was in Vietnam.

VIETNAM / 50 YEARS AGO / TURBO REGALS -

As strange as it may seem, there is actually a connection between the three topics in the above heading in my life. Ironically, I discovered this the day after Memorial Day, which is quite fitting.

As I have mentioned it before, I served one year (1966-1967) of my three-year Army stint in Nha Trang, Vietnam. I was lucky because when the plane landed in nearby Cam Ranh Bay, an officer addressed the group of us new recruits inquiring who had photography experience. Three of us raised our hands. We were tested, and I proved to be the chosen one.

Fortunately, I was a wedding photographer with my Dad at just 17 years old. Often times my Dad had two weddings on the same day, so I would cover one of the weddings by myself.

I was then sent up to Nha Trang to replace the current 17th Aviation Group photographer who had an unusual last name. His last name was Gogluicci. I remember he was from New Jersey. He had maybe one week left in Vietnam to train me, and then he was going back to the states. If I recall, he was shorter than me.

Fast forward to last Tuesday, the day after Memorial Day, I was carrying a stack of orders down to the packing area and the Turbo Regal order on top was for a Matt Gogluicci in New Jersey.

Like many Vets memories come back to you around Memorial Day and I was no exception. I called Matt Gogluicci and said, “I have an unusual question for you. Did any of your relatives with that last name serve as a photographer in Vietnam in 1966-1967 timeframe?” He said his father did and his father’s first name was Vincent.

I immediately thought this was too much of a coincidence. I had Matt give me his Dad’s phone number. Sure enough, it was Matt’s father that I replaced as a photographer for the 17th Aviation Group in Nha Trang Vietnam.

I also became the editor for the 17th Aviation Group newspaper.

It’s weird, both Vinny and I only recall one of our bosses, a young 1LT Heilderberg. The spelling of his name may be wrong.

We plan to get together later this summer. Vinny, as he was known, only has vague memories of me since going back to the States was his main concern at the time! I think he was headed for the states within 3-5 days of me arriving to replace him.

It turns out that Vinny landed the job the same way I did when he first got to Vietnam. He landed in Saigon and was also given a test. He was able to get developing equipment brought over by the Air Force, so we could develop black and white photos. In 1966-1967 in Vietnam we could not develop color prints.

Talk about a small world! Vinny is still a photographer today, which as many of you know has changed a lot from 50 years ago.

In Vietnam I used an expensive German camera called a “Rolleiflex.” Once I was given the job, my father sent me my own camera equipment, which I had used for weddings in the states. This camera shot 2-¼ inch negatives, which was larger than the standard 35mm film that most cameras used back then.

The military had a huge camera that I refused to use. I can’t remember what it was called.

I sold the Rolleiflex camera years ago. I can remember taking photos of General William Westmoreland standing maybe 10 feet away from me. At age 18, you don’t realize the history you are witnessing at the time.

I still have my short-timer’s stick from Vietnam. It was a wooden hand-carved small cane-like stick that you would carry. When they saw you with one of those sticks, other troops immediately would recognize that you were going home within a matter of weeks. I can’t recall if the short-timer’s stick was practiced all over Vietnam or just in my unit. Many of us short-timers even had it down to the number of hours before we left that dreadful country!

After serving in Vietnam, Vinny finished his Army tour in Georgia. I finished my tour at the Philadelphia Induction Center testing incoming recruits. Basically, I played teacher to incoming draftees. This was great duty as I got to drive home every night. At the time, my wife worked at Hurst.

I just took a quick glimpse on ebay and the Rolleiflex camera like I used is selling for anywhere from $1,500 to $5,000.

This story is proof that “It’s a small world after all.”

We plan to meet up with Vinny later this summer for dinner, something we never did in Vietnam!

MINT MATCHED SET OF GRAND NATIONAL WHEELS -

We recently purchased a set of mint 1986-1987 Grand National wheels from a long-time customer of ours that he removed over 15 years ago. (See Rare Parts section however, they may already be sold).

In checking the stampings on the back, two are dated 12-15-86 and two are dated 12-16-86. The owner made sure when he got the tires removed that they did it the proper way so as not to have the tire machine scratch the chrome surface. This was a common problem back when these cars were fairly new. I can recall selling many new sets of wheels to tire places that had ruined customer’s wheels and needed replacements. Back then not many cars had chrome steel wheels.

PHOTO 1 - Shows for photos of the mint, matched set of 1986-1987 Grand National wheels. It may not be readable but the date code is very visible on the back in one of the photos. Note how clean the backsides of the wheels are. I did not even have to polish the fronts, they are that nice.

POWERMASTER BRAKE SWITCHES -

As most Turbo Regal owners realize, back when the cars were fairly new, there was a Safety Recall issued by Buick for the General Electric brake switch.

From the factory they all received a black brake switch on the powermaster unit.

Soon after production, major issues developed with the brake switch possibly leaking. One might say that was the beginning of a long-running problem connected to the powermaster brake unit.

At this point, it is extremely rare that we get back a powermaster core that still has the black brake switch on it. From what I understand, a Safety Recall can basically be redeemed for free, regardless of the time limit. As long as no one has run your 17-digit VIN number at the Buick dealer and claimed the replacement grey brake switch, you should be able to get it at no charge.

I can remember doing this more than once in the early and mid-1990s on some of the Turbo Regals we bought to resell.

In April I had a customer bring me something at our Open House I had never seen before. As a NOS part it is worthless, but as a novelty item it ranks right up there as I never knew it existed in this packaging.

PHOTO 2 - The top left photo shows the original still sealed AC Delco bag that contains a brand new black brake switch, complete with a single O-ring. The top right photo taken is of the back of the bag clearly shows the black brake switch still sealed in the original AC Delco bag.

In all my years in business and with the deals I have done, I have never seen a black brake switch replacement still factory sealed in the AC Delco bag. Although its value may not be much, it’s a cool item for someone like me to have. On the left in the lower photo shows a used black brake switch that someone has loaded up with silicone, probably trying to stop a leak! On the right in the lower photo, of course, we show the correct replacement grey brake switch. That is the brake switch that should be on every powermaster unit today.

EXPLAINING THE SPID CODES (TRUNK ID LABEL) continued -

Relating to the SPID codes label, this is where all the factory installed options are listed in alphabetical order along with a list of the features that are in your Turbo Regal.

According to Chris Tobie, who worked at GM, other GM car lines started using the SPID labels prior to 1984 and they can be found on earlier F-body cars for example.

Everyone has their own preference for the number of options, whether the goal is to have as few as possible or trying to have as many as possible.

Looking back and I think many of my readers will agree they wish their Turbo Regal did not have certain options. Power windows and a power antenna can be quite problematic. The factory alarm can also cause issues. Those are just three that quickly come to my mind.

I remember when I got ours in the fall of 1987, it was a fairly well-optioned 1987 Grand National hardtop. At the time we also had a 1985 Mustang GT 5 speed with power windows. When it comes to power windows the Mustang was definitely quicker.

One of the most useful options that you can easily add to your 1984-1987 Turbo Regal today is the optional power trunk release. The SPID code for this option is “AU3” and it originally had a $50 price tag for 1984-1987. It was the same system that GM used on all the G-body cars.

For some reason GM mounted the release button on a bracket mounted in the glove box. This is a practice that GM has since discontinued. Years later they moved the button to the driver’s area. We had the actual bracket reproduced exactly. This is a very simple option to install, meaning even I have installed them in previous cars. One wire goes from the actual solenoid to one side of the button. This wire runs down the same way as the trunk light wire does. It would run down the driver’s side trunk hinge. Another wire comes off the other terminal on the back of the button and goes directly to a spot in the fuse box that has power to it when the car is turned off.

SPID codes will be continued next week.

PHOTO 3 - We show the three basic parts for the optional power trunk release. On this particular solenoid, I polished it up. It actually looks better than new.

One company that has purchased many of them from us is MIKE’S MONTES in Ohio. You can email him - [email protected] or call him at 1-800-811-5851 to purchase a power trunk release kit from him. His price is $49.95 plus shipping.

Mike is also a good source for many other Turbo Regal parts. I have known him personally for a number of years and, like most of the other G-body suppliers, we buy and sell to each other weekly. (See the Rare Parts section as the one shown in Photo 3 can be purchased directly from me).

PHOTO 4 - Shows the actual instruction sheet that came with the power trunk release kit, if you purchased it as an accessory for your car at a later date.

SEE NEW PRODUCTS SECTION -

See the New Products section for the 1984-1985 Turbo Regal conversion kit to a 1986-1987 Turbo Regal Ignition System. Casper’s Electronics made a conversion kit that is plug-and-play and includes the bracket to secure the coil module. We now carry this complete kit.

1984-1987 BUICK TURBO REGAL
CCCI (Computer Controlled Coil Ignition) SensorCheck MODULE

The Computer Controlled Coil Ignition (CCCI) is probably the least-understood system on your Turbo Buick powered vehicle. The most common problem is the “No-Start” condition, and there are very few tests that a car owner is capable of performing to determine a faulty component in this system.

This simple CCCI SensorCheck Module plug-and-play diagnostic tool is designed to troubleshoot your ignition system for the most common “No-Start” scenario. Specifically, it will display a simple LED to indicate the status of the CAM sensor, CRANK sensor, Coil Power and MODULE power. The CAM LED will visibly blink rapidly during idle. The CRANK LED will appear to be continuously on (due to the rapid Crank signal) when the vehicle is running normally. The POWER LED will be illuminated when the MODULE fuse is working. There are 3 LED’s assigned to each model: “HOT AIR” (1984-1985) and Intercooled (1986-1989.)

It can also be used to set the cam sensor!
No CAM signal = No Spark, No Injector pulse
No CRANK signal = No Spark, Only Inj pulse
CAM signal initiates sequential spark. Without it, No spark.
CRANK signal initiates fuel injector pulses.
No Lights, good fuses = Check ECM ground return wire.

This clever device eliminates any guesswork as to why your Turbo Regal won’t start, if it’s related to the cam sensor, crank sensor, coil pack, or coil module.

It comes with easy-to-follow directions. It is all plug-and-play to conduct the tests to determine where the problem is originating. By using LED lights, you can pinpoint where the problem originates.

By a flip of a switch, it works on all 1984 to 1987 Turbo Regals including, the 1989 Turbo Trans Am.

A must-have tool that saves the guesswork when you have a no start situation.

1978-1988 All G-BODY (Including Buick Turbo Regals) -
FLIP-DOWN STAY-DOWN MODIFICATION KIT
TO CONVERT AN ORIGINAL REAR LICENSE PLATE BRACKET

GM used a flip-down stay-down license plate bracket on various other GM cars in the 1980s and 1990s. However, it was never a factory part on a G-body car.

If you’re like me, you hate fighting the heavy spring pressure on the factory license plate bracket when you are filling the gas tank.

The flip-down stay-down bracket has become a popular conversion to put on a G-body car, including the Turbo Regals, since it prevents accidental fuel spillage on the rear fillers. Unfortunately GM does not have any of these flip-down stay-down license plate brackets available and haven’t for years.

We have sold used ones for $25-$28 as fast as I could find them. As each year passes, finding them is getting harder and harder. The factory flip-down stay-down only used a single spring on one of the hinges.

We have designed a modification kit to convert an original rear license plate bracket to a flip-down stay-down license plate. Our new 3-piece modification kit includes 2 brackets and a spring. No holes need to be drilled in the original bracket. It eliminates the 2 factory springs on the existing license plate bracket. Those springs are prone to rust, since they are not stainless. The new spring in our kit is stainless and the 2 brackets are 24-gauge galvanized steel, so the parts will not rust.

The directions are easy-to-follow and include actual photos of the install on our personal Buick Turbo-T.
The end result - There are no rust issues with the new spring and brackets with the flip-down stay-down design along with the convenience of having your hands free to pump the gas. It also eliminates the risk of spilling fuel on the rear fillers. A bargain for under $20.

An excellent upgrade to help avoid gas spills.

MOLLY DESIGNS -
PROTOTYPE GRAND NATIONAL 17.5 x 10 x 1/8 ACRYLIC SIGN

We have designed a collectible sign to highlight Molly’s prototype Grand National. We personally received several prototype photos from Molly years ago, and combined 2 of the photos with the tag line “PROTOTYPE GRAND NATIONAL designed by “MOLLY,” MOLLY DESIGN.”

The design is printed on 1/8 acrylic. It is printed on a machine that costs over $100,000 using a UV ink printing process is called “Direct Print.” Unfortunately, the printed sign is difficult to photograph because of reflections and light, but it looks great

It makes a great addition to your garage, office or show car display. It also makes a great gift for any Grand National enthusiast

“TOP TEN REASONS I OWN A BUICK GRAND NATIONAL”
17.5 x 10 x 1/8 ACRYLIC SIGN

We have designed a collectible sign to highlight the “TOP TEN REASONS I OWN A BUICK GRAND NATIONAL.”

Along with some quotes, we included our mechanic guy cartoon. Here are the top ten reasons:
# 1 - I was impressed with the factory black paint job.
# 2 - I love the constant challenge of trying to eliminate oil leaks.
# 3 - I wonder where the “power” is in the operation of the power windows.
# 4 - My wife says I needed a spending outlet for my money.
# 5 - I can buy tires wholesale.
# 6 - I was told these cars are seldom stolen.
# 7 - My joy of buying a T-Top Grand National was quickly shattered during the first rain storm.
# 8 - I wanted to learn all about the powermaster brake system.
# 9 - “B-B-B-BAD-TO-THE-BONE” sounds good on the radio.
#10 - The uninformed think it’s a Monte Carlo…the informed won’t challenge me to race.

The design is printed on 1/8 acrylic. It is printed on a machine that costs over $100,000 using a UV ink printing process is called “Direct Print.” Unfortunately, the printed sign is difficult to photograph because of reflections and light, but it looks great.

NOTE ABOUT PHOTOS ON THE WEBSITE -

We have heard from a couple people that have viewed the photos on the website. Because these have to be low-resolution photos to work on the Inner Circle segments on the website, any photos of text don't appear clear when enlarged. This is a problem when you are trying to see numbers, such as those on the VIN labels or pages from Options booklet. Also, because of photo reproduction and computer screen variations, the colors may not be true to the actual product or photo.
