ORIGINAL GREY LEATHER-WRAPPED STEERING WHEEL -

We seldom get any extremely nice original leather-wrapped steering wheels to resell. However, we did get one fine example. This leather wheel is grey with very nice brushed aluminum spokes. It is a single seam steering wheel.

We also offer a service of getting the grey leather wheels redone for $250 plus a $100 core charge until you return your original acceptable leather steering wheel. Check out part #7135 - 1986-1987 Turbo Regal - Restored Grey Leather-Wrapped Steering Wheel on our website.

PHOTO 1 - Shows this extremely nice original grey leather-wrapped steering wheel. The buyer will also get a new reproduction grey billet horn ring a ($54.95 value.) It also comes with the plastic base collar. See the Rare Parts section for price.

A LOOK AT THE 1985 BUICK PRESS KIT -

Last week we showed the 1984 Buick Press Kit. This week we are focusing on the 1985 Buick Press Kit. In 1985 Buick introduced the new Somerset Regal, which was a front-wheel drive model. It seems confusing to name it a Regal when it had virtually nothing in common with the G-body rear-wheel drive Regal that we all know and love.

This new Somerset Regal was aimed at the smaller sporty, yet luxurious, European and Japanese imports, according to the Press Kit.

A manual 5-speed transmission was standard and a 3-speed automatic was an option.

In the Regal line up, the four-door sedan was discontinued. Once again, the Lear Seiglar seats was available on the Regal T-Type. Interesting enough, the Regal also had a 4.3 litre diesel V-6 engine available. I’m not sure how many of these saw production, since I can’t recall ever seeing one back in the 1980s.

The problematic powermaster brake system was introduced over the electrically driven pump. According to the Buick News, it was 20 pounds lighter and had more efficient under-hood packaging. At least at the start Buick thought they had a new brake system that would be up to the task. Under the specifications for the Riviera, it talks about the expanding cellular sites and that Buick would soon offer cell phones in other Buick models.

That covers the big news from Buick for the new 1985 model year.

PHOTO 2 - The photo to the left shows the folder for the 1985 Buick Press Kit. To the right shows a spread of the Buick News that breaks down each Buick model and describes the various new features for each model.

PHOTO 3 - The top center photo shows an 8 x 10 photo of the 1985 Regal T-Type. You can see that it is a two-tone model. Besides having the T-Type emblem on the front fender, below that emblem is also the small power six emblem. I think it’s unusual to have two emblems on the fender. Note that the side markers have the black trim instead of the chrome trim. Those one year style wheels don’t seem to be very valuable today. Like the 1984 model, it has a one-piece front air dam, since it was not intercooled. See the Rare Parts section as I have several of these factory black and white T-Type photos for sale. The bottom left photo shows the Turbo engine and Buicks new computer system “Oscar.” I wonder if that unique Chevrolet van shown in the photo is still around at GM today or did it get sold? It would be quite rare as I doubt Buick had many of those vans built. A new 1985 Grand National sporting T-Tops is in the same photo. The photo to the right shows both the new 1985 Grand National and the Buick Century T-Type sedan. You can see that the Century wheel is basically the same as the T-Type Regal with (I would think) a different offset since the Century was a front-wheel drive model. Again, I hardly remember most of the various Buick models from the mid-1980s, since only the Turbo Regal models perked my interest.

PHOTOS FROM THE BUICK@BATES NUT FARM SHOW -

My good friend Greg Davidian (who used to live in New Jersey and now resides in California) attended the recent BUICKS@Bates 2018 show. Turns out he only lives four miles away from the Bates Nut Farm. It was his first time attending this west coast Buick event. According to Greg, he counted just over 80 Turbo Regals at this event. The weather was picture perfect and the Bates Nut Farm provided a perfect background for this event. I tip my hat to Mike Barnard (Mr Spoolfool) for putting on this successful west coast Buick event.

According to Greg, he met two customers of mine. Both actually own one of our cars. One is a Grand National and the other is a T-Type.

Greg said he spent over 2 hours at the show, which is a long time for a car show to hold his interest! He says it was one of the best Buick events he has ever been to and plans to go again next year.

Mike sent me a link to the video he shot of the Bates Nut Farm event. Here is the link:

The bottom left shows a photo of the event shirt that Mike had made. The bottom right shows another view of the cars at the event.

BREAKING NEWS -

We just got an email from our source that is GM licensed for vinyl banners. GM has approved 5 of the Turbo Regal designs we submitted.

One of the banners is the very cool GNX magazine ad and one shows the Grand National with the hubcaps from the Dealer Album. I am not sure which other designs have been approved at this point.

Watch for more info in future Inner Circles as we hope to have a good selection of Buick Turbo Regal banners available soon.

EMBROIDERED FACTORY BUICK FLOOR MATS -

In last week’s Inner Circle, we wrote about the embroidered floor mats that I recall having in one of my LeSabre T-Types. Since then we heard from Vaughn, a customer of ours, who owns a 1986 LeSabre Grand National. He bought the LeSabre Grand National used in 1987 and still has it.

His car has those exact floor mats in it. He says on the Dealer Service Bulletin # 86-10-12 it lists those mats as GM #25528310. If you run that part number today (as I did,) it has long been discontinued. It seems unusual that Buick would make this carpet embroidered floor mat for a car model that fewer than 125 were produced.

I have a Buick Dealer Parts and Accessories Price Schedule dated December 1987. It lists those embroidered floor mats for $65.75 for the pair. Their next newest book I have is dated March 2001 and there is no listing for GM #25528310.

Unfortunately, since they were formatted for a front-wheel drive Buick model, they are too wide to fit in the G-body Regals. Front-wheel drive cars lacked the transmission hump.

NEW YORK WOMAN RACKS UP 90 LICENSE SUSPENSIONS -

A Long Island, NY woman was recently busted for the 90th time. Ironically, she was driving a 1996 Buick Regal when cops noticed no registration sticker on the windshield and stopped her to check her license. Adding to her list of issues, the tag on the car was improper since it had been switched from another car. If you live in Long Island, you may want to watch for this woman so you can avoid her! Maybe her goal is 100 license suspensions?

UPDATE ON REPRODUCTION SPID DECALS -

ECS Automotive is still working on making SPID Decals 100% like the originals. I sent them original SPID decals for them to get the size and the color of the paper correct. They are still working on perfecting the decals.

REPLACEMENT RADIO TUNER KNOB (1) & VOLUME KNOB (1) SET

In many cases, the original brushed disc may be missing from the factory radio knobs or the brushed disc may be discolored.

This is a brand new correct replacement for the 2 outer radio knobs - tuner and volume knobs. These are very hard to find today since they were last used over 20 years ago on various GM radios. These are correct for other GM applications as well, including all the G-body models.

Another excellent replacement for any interior restoration.

1984-1987 Buick Turbo Regal -
SPOOLFOOL DRIP-LIP Flywheel (Torque Converter) Cover

Mike, owner of Spoolfool, has created another great practical high-quality product. It’s a fiberglass flywheel (torque converter) cover that has a built-in drip tray. What’s even crazier is that it works.

It is a known fact that 90% of oil leaks on our cars either happen at the back of the engine or end up at the back of the engine. This clever flywheel cover with its built-in drip tray catches those drips, so the oil does not drip on the ground or on the crossover pipe.

Mike has named this new product the “Drip-Lip.” The piece is made in glossy black fiberglass and it replaces the metal or plastic fly wheel cover. Not only is it lighter than the factory metal flywheel cover, but it will not rust.

This Spoolfool Drip-Lip replaces the stock dust cover and keeps oil from dripping on the ground by trapping it in a special tray that attaches to the bottom of this custom-made cover. It has a removable cloth that absorbs any oil that would normally drip and stain your garage floor or driveway. The small cloth catches any oil from dripping and is easy to remove and replace when it becomes fully soaked. This fiberglass dust cover replaces the factory dust cover. You simply reuse the factory bolts and install this dust cover in place of the plastic or metal one.

Like all of Mike’s fiberglass products, the quality is excellent.

If you are into drag racing, this is a critical part as it eliminates dripping oil from the car onto the race track.

So far, the initial results have been that 80% of oil leaks can be kept from dripping on the ground, track and crossover pipe with it installed on a car.

Up until now, the joke has been that if it ain’t leaking oil, you might want to check the oil level. This unique Spoolfool Drip-Lip hopes to change all that.

This product is NOT FOR EVERYONE. It is only for cars with oil leaks (which is most of the Turbo Regals.)

Spoolfool Production Drip-Lip features:
*Catches engine oil from a 3.8 liter Turbo Buick engine
*Keeps smoking oil off the exhaust crossover pipe
*A must-have part for street or strip car
*Half the weight of an original metal flywheel cover
*Since it is fiberglass, it won’t rust out
*Easy installation
*Made in the U.S.A.

An excellent way to solve the oil drip problem.

We have heard from a couple people that have had problems with the links in our Inner Circle.

When we check the links, they work fine. However, if you are not able to be directed to the exact website page or internet site, you can "copy" and "paste" the link into the URL in your browser (such as Safari, Firefox, Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, etc.) If it doesn't link in one browser, it may work in another.

Most people having problems are using Internet Explorer. If you are having issues with links, try another browser to see if it works.

You may need to "UPDATE" your browser to be use you are using the current version.

NOTE ABOUT PHOTOS ON THE WEBSITE -

We have heard from a couple people that have viewed the photos on the website. Because these must be low-resolution photos to work on the Inner Circle segments on the website, any photos of text don't appear clear when enlarged. This is a problem when you are trying to see numbers, such as those on the VIN labels or pages from Options booklet. Also, because of photo reproduction and computer screen variations, the colors may not be true to the actual product or photo.

If you would like to have us email you any photo at the higher resolution for viewing, just email us and we will email them to you. Be sure to be specific on which pictures you want to see - Reference Inner Circle date and photo number 1, 2, 3 or 4 - [email protected]

ABOUT OUR EMAILS -

Any inquiries concerning used parts, you must email me direct - [email protected] - I will answer you. However, if I fail to answer you within 24 hours, please email us again. Since expanding into used parts, I get a lot of emails and sometimes I may forget your request or may not remember who requested the item.

IN CLOSING -

Remember, we are always seeking good used Turbo Regal parts to buy or swap for a Letter of Credit towards any of our website parts.
