A LOOK AT THE 1987 BUICK PRESS KIT -

Last week we covered the 1986 Buick Press Kit. This week we are covering the 1987 Buick Press Kit. The big news for 1987 was the new front-wheel drive LeSabre, including the new LeSabre T-Type. Having owned 2 of these models years ago, I can attest that they were very comfortable cars. I never fancied the factory wheels they had, but the full dash cluster and comfy seats were well thought out. Seems to me the car lacked the window issues that the G-Body Regals had.

The sales pitch was that this new LeSabre model was to appeal to younger, non-traditional Buick buyers (ones that did not have one foot in the grave.) They should have used that sales pitch for the Turbo Regals, since it was those models that appealed to the younger buyers!

Perhaps the biggest news for the new LeSabre was a first for Buick and that was the thermoplastic front fenders. This eliminated any issues with rust for the northern part of the country.

The LeSabre T-Type was limited to five colors - black, red, white, silver, and grey. Following the Grand National seat format, they all had two-tone black and grey 45/45 cloth seats. The tire size was the same as the Turbo Regals using Eagle GTs. I am not sure what year - 1988 or 1989 - that the black leather seats was an option for the LeSabre T-Types. (This model was only available for 3 years).

The idea was that 1987 Buick buyers could customize their 1987 cars with touring options, performance packages, interior sport packages, and exterior sport packages. In other words, Buick expanded the choices to appeal to a wider market on their various Buick models. This allowed Buick buyers to get the blackout option on almost all the other Buick models for 1987.

It seems to be confusing that in 1987 the Turbo Regal became known as the Turbo-T, yet all the other models for 1987 had a T-Type package. Seems strange that for last year the model name would be different for the Turbo Regal, yet the T-Type name was retained for all the other Buick models.

PHOTO 1 - The photo to the left shows the folder for the 1987 Buick Press Kit. The photo to the right shows the various Buick News Releases for 1987.

PHOTO 2 - The photo to the left shows 2 Regal models. The one at the top is a white Turbo-T. The photo to the right shows 2 views of the new LeSabre T-Type. What I find interesting (which you probably can’t see in the photo,) is that the Turbo-T lacks the T emblem on the front fender and the Regal emblem on the rear quarter panel is positioned lower than it actually appeared on the production models! A white exterior with the optional blackout package was a sharp combination for the Turbo-T in 1987.

PHOTO 3 - The photo on the left shows the front of the High Technology brochure from Buick, which is almost identical to the 1986 version. The photo to the right shows the back side of this 4-page brochure. Again, I like to point out the fact that in every color photo Buick shows of the intercooler 3.8 SFI engine, it shows the inlet pipe or “up pipe” as it is often called in satin black, not bare metal which the production Turbo Regals had. This shows another instance where a factory photo does not correctly depict actual production.

Next week we will show you some bonus items that I have featuring the 1987 models. Some of which came in the Press Kit and others I simply bought from various sources years ago.

One might say it was dumb luck that I was smart enough to buy most of my literature years ago when the cars were fairly new. Today it’s almost impossible to find anything related to the 1984-1987 Turbo Regals, since Buick never really printed much in the way of literature.

I don’t think the “suit and tie guys” at Buick really realized what they had created. The magazine writers jumped on the band wagon back then, promoting the power that the V6 turbo intercooler engine put out over the popular Monte Carlo SS models. Granted, quality was not the greatest, but Buick had its moment to shine compared to the other G-body examples.

COLUMBIA, PENNSYLVANIA CAR SHOW -

The other Saturday I attended a car show in the town of Columbia, PA where my younger brother lives. Columbia is just west of Lancaster, PA, and is the home of the clock museum. I always tell my brother this is where time stands still! I try and visit him every 4 to 6 weeks.

The weather was picture perfect, unusual since it has rained almost every weekend in my area. There must have been well over 250 to 300 cars at the show. One would think with that many show cars, there would be at least one Turbo Regal. No such luck. Zero in attendance. I did see several GTOs and one GTO owner heard of me and was surprised I was at this event. He is going to the GTO National Meet this weekend.

PHOTO 4 - The top left shows a perfect example of stuffing a huge engine into the lightest car possible - an old Fiat. The top right shows an extremely rare Dodge 1955 model, two-tone convertible. One can only imagine how much effort the owner had to do to find all the parts for that rare example. The bottom left and bottom right photos show what happens when a family with a farm and has a wild imagination can build. This engine had twin turbos, intercooled, and I believe was a V1 engine of some sort. Note the size of the back tires!

ON THE NEWS FRONT -

Under the section called “Readers Rides” of the July 2018 issue of Muscle Car Review it shows Paul Vilser’s prestine WE4 in the article. I have known Paul for a number of years. Not only is he a customer of ours, but he also did several Buick cartoons for us. Unlike the majority of current Turbo Regal owners, Paul was smart enough to buy his WE4 brand new and keep it all these years. Although unknown at the time he made his purchase, it turns out he bought a very limited model. That car today has proven to be a good investment, since only 1,547 WE4s were produced.

Ironically, by chance that works out to 1,000 more than the recognized 547 GNX models.

EXAMPLE OF EXTREME DEVOTION -

The other day I witnessed extreme devotion as I drove passed a cemetery. Looking over, I spotted a car parked along the edge of the roadway and noticed an elderly gentleman sitting on a lawn chair reading a book in front of a tombstone. It was quite obvious he planned to be there awhile since he brought a lawn chair. It was extremely hot that day. Now, that’s devotion.

HE GAVE IT A GOOD RUN -

I have often remarked about how married women, in many cases, out live us married guys.

I read this in the paper the other night. A man, just a few weeks shy of his 105 birthday, passed away in his sleep. You guessed it, he was survived by his 95-year-old wife.

TOUCH-UP PAINT -

We sell a lot of the popular colors of the spray paint for the Turbo Regals. The company we deal with is really good at nailing down exact colors.

Recently I wanted to get a spray can of paint and a touch-up pen of paint for my 1996 Ford Ranger. Nowhere on the truck is the exterior color indicated. I gave the VIN number to my local Ford dealer who gave me the color code for the paint - Cayman Blue Metallic DA/4438. With that information, I was able to get our supplier to mix up an 11-ounce spray can and one of those touch-up pens. The match is perfect.

I then wanted to get it for another one of my personal cars, which is a 2003 model. Many of the later car models have the paint code on a label on the door jamb. This 2003 and my 2004 car both have the paint code on the door jamb area. All three of these vehicles have original paint.

It occurred to me that some of our customers may also be looking for a spray can and touch-up pen of the correct matching paint for their used car. Dealers only can provide you with a Touch-Up Pen as they do not offer a spray can.

I am testing the waters to see if there is any demand to add this service to our website. If you provide the paint code for any U.S. or foreign car, we can get you an 11-ounce spray can and a Touch-Up Pen both for $49.95 plus shipping. Simply email [email protected] with the paint code and within 3-4 days we can have it made up and on its way to you.

UPDATE ON REPRODUCTION SPID DECALS -

ECS Automotive has recently done another sample for us to examine. I am not sure at this writing if it is the early SPID decal or the later one. Watch for updates.

NOTE - ABOUT LINKS IN THE INNER CIRCLE -

We have heard from a couple people that have had problems with the links in our Inner Circle.

When we check the links, they work fine. However, if you are not able to be directed to the exact website page or internet site, you can "copy" and "paste" the link into the URL in your browser (such as Safari, Firefox, Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, etc.) If it doesn't link in one browser, it may work in another.

Most people having problems are using Internet Explorer. If you are having issues with links, try another browser to see if it works.

You may need to "UPDATE" your browser to be use you are using the current version.

NOTE ABOUT PHOTOS ON THE WEBSITE -

We have heard from a couple people that have viewed the photos on the website. Because these must be low-resolution photos to work on the Inner Circle segments on the website, any photos of text don't appear clear when enlarged. This is a problem when you are trying to see numbers, such as those on the VIN labels or pages from Options booklet. Also, because of photo reproduction and computer screen variations, the colors may not be true to the actual product or photo.

If you would like to have us email you any photo at the higher resolution for viewing, just email us and we will email them to you. Be sure to be specific on which pictures you want to see - Reference Inner Circle date and photo number 1, 2, 3 or 4 - [email protected]

ABOUT OUR EMAILS -

Any inquiries concerning used parts, you must email me direct - [email protected] - I will answer you. However, if I fail to answer you within 24 hours, please email us again. Since expanding into used parts, I get a lot of emails and sometimes I may forget your request or may not remember who requested the item.

IN CLOSING -

We will be taking lots of pictures this coming weekend between the GTOAA Nationals and the Pypes Car Show on Saturday. Hope to see some of our old-time customers at these events.
