JULY CARTOON -

PHOTO 1 - Our first photo this month’s “Adventures of Tommy Turbo” cartoon. In honor of the 4th of July holiday the caption reads, “ HAVE A SAFE AND SANE 4TH - LEAVE THE FIREWORKS TO THE PROS OR HAVE GOOD INSURANCE.”

REPORT FROM GM AT CARLISLE -

I was at GM at Carlisle this past Friday only. I am fairly certain Saturday was a wash out as heavy rains were expected to hit this area and the area where I live. I think we have had one of the rainiest Junes in several years!

GM at Carlisle has been the smallest venue of the car models featured at Carlisle when compared to the Ford, Mopar, and Corvette events.

Pete and I only saw two Turbo Regals on the show field Friday. At least a dozen or more of the same year Monte Carlo SS’s were on the field. I saw very few cars for sale in the Car Corral.

One of the nicest cars for sale was a super mint original 1986 Olds Cutlass 442. The car had a solid roof with a mere 10,000 miles. The price was $19,900. The car was from Vermont, which does not require titles on the older cars. In this case, the buyer would provide a bill of sale. This could possibly be an issue to getting a title in your state, depending on the laws of your state.

PHOTO 2 - These four photos show this mint condition 1986 Olds Cutlass 442. It had the battery replaced, the power antenna was replaced, and it was riding on brand new correct reproduction Eagle GT tires. A Grand National with those miles and condition would fetch close to double that amount. These 442s definitely had the better dash format, but under the hood lacked any serious punch. I had a 1987 442 with 12,000 miles on it back in 2000 and sold it for $10,500 in just 3 days. It also was a hardtop.

I also spotted a mint original GMC Syclone for sale. You seldom see original low-mileage examples of them for sale. It had 23,700 actual miles and the asking price was $24,500. Even the stock wheels looked nice on this car. No car corral would be complete without at least one barn find. This event had a 1964 Impala SS that had a 1977 PA inspection sticker on it. The seller even had the original Window Sticker with the car! One of the cars is the show portion was a super rare all original 1973 Chevelle Super Sport. This car featured the rare two-tone paint scheme with a vinyl roof and pop-up sunroof option. The car also had the swivel-out front bucket seats. Probably the most well-optioned original 1973 Chevelle in existence! The color was called “root beer brown.”

PHOTO 3 - The top left photo shows the 23,700-mile GMC Syclone. The top right photo shows the barn find Impala SS. The lower left photo shows the extremely rare 1973 Chevelle. The lower right photo shows one of the rarest Oldsmobile station wagons you will ever lay eyes on. I believe it was a 1957 model. Finding any exterior or interior parts for that model had to be a major challenge!

GM AND VICTOR REINZ BUICK TURBO HEAD GASKETS -

GM and Victor Reinz Buick Turbo Regal head gaskets are one in the same. The difference is, the ones they made for GM have the GM part number stamped on them. If you buy a set from GM, you will see the GM part number and somewhere a small “v” stamped in a circle somewhere on the gasket!

I actually talked to a person who had access to the records and tooling for GM for the 1986-1987 Turbo Regal head gaskets, which GM ordered back in 1985.

Victor Reinz made the original head gaskets for the production 1986-1987 Turbo Regals. There are two different part numbers, both will work from Victor Reinz for the 1986-1987 Turbo Regal engines. For over 20 years Richard Clark has used both numbers with zero issues. He has built several hundred 1986-1987 Turbo engines using the same exact gasket we sell.

He originally found this information out years ago from his local GM dealer. One format has a small extra hole in the head gasket that actually sits outside the head and does nothing. The other version does not have this extra hole that is not used. Both versions are 100% the same except for the one exterior hole. Our part number is #7576 and we sell a pair for $54.95 plus shipping. The list price is almost $90 a set.

The end result is the Victor Reinz head gaskets and GM are exactly the same. The real difference is what price you want to pay for a set of head gaskets.

We usually have the version that does not have the extra hole in stock.

Either version is getting increasingly difficult to get. Most manufacturers that have GM as a client make the same part, but leave off the GM part number for obvious reasons. One part that comes to mind that I have always seen the GM part number on is the 1986-1987 cam sensor. It doesn’t matter if it’s in a Standard box, or Wells bag or from GM/AC DELCO. You can line up all 3 cam sensors on a table and they are all 100% exactly the same. The difference is in the price you pay. I currently deal with one major company and most of their product line is from close outs that they repackage under their label.

For example - A1 Cardone rebuilds parts many if not all the electronic parts for GM, no matter what box the end product goes in. You can walk into any auto store and clearly recognize the A1 Cardone box that they use for rebuilt parts regardless of what company logo is on the one side of the box. This practice is nothing new.

For many years, we’ve been selling Corvette 6-speed shifters to one of the biggest Corvette tuners in the country that package our part as their shifter under their logo.

We buy certain Turbo Regal parts in bulk under one brand name and sometimes the packing slip that is in the box shows it came from another company such as Wells.

In a similar vain, when Hurst landed the Pontiac account supplying manual shifters for the new 1964 GTO 4-speed models, they were not allowed to emboss their company name on the shifter. This policy changed for the 1965 GTO, and then Hurst was permitted to emboss their company name on the chrome stick. As a result, Hurst was able to really capitalize on this in their advertising. True Story!

PHOTO 4 - The top left photo shows a side view of a typical standard blue and white A1 Cardone box that they use for their rebuilt parts. The photo to the right shows where I have pealed back another company’s label exposing the A1 Cardone logo on the end of the box.

A MOVIE IN THE MAKING -

I can see a movie in the making as most of us have followed the escapades of the two escaped convicts from upstate New York these last several weeks. If you have not seen the movie Shawshank Redemption, I highly recommend it.

Of all the questions surrounding their escape and what they have found out thus far, it still has not come out as to how they knew exactly what path in the confines of the prison to take once they crawled out of their cell.

CLASSIFIED CAR ADS -

In some of the classified car ads you may see, it may read car has “normal” rust. This is a curious statement at best. What does a seller base that statement on? There is no Guide Book that I am aware of showing what is considered normal rust pertaining to specific car models. Also, you can bet anytime you visibly see any rust, you are only seeing a small area of rust compared to what you are not initially seeing!

LED LIGHTING -

LED lighting is becoming more and more popular with the new cars and trucks. I just read where one new SUV has over 200 LEDS illuminating the exterior of the vehicle!

HOLIDAY HOURS -

Our office will be closed this Friday, July 3rd since the 4th falls on a Saturday.

Because various companies will be closed Friday, July 3rd, if you are waiting for a UPS shipment from us, you may not get any deliveries on July 3rd. We are unsure how UPS will be making deliveries.

The book measures 6" x 9", has 230 pages and includes eight chapters of information. One chapter highlights all the major players with fast Turbo Regals from Marka Gallina to Kenny Duttweiler. Another chapter covers transmission upgrades by Art Carr. That same chapter includes tidbits on getting your turbo car to run in the 11’s and 12’s.

A later chapter covers restoration and care of your Turbo Regal. There is a tech talk section with John Craig on turbo upgrades and a chapter on suspension and brake upgrades. The “Guide to 1978-1987 Buick Grand National, T-Type and GNX - FACTS & FIGURES BOOK - SERIES #II” covers the history of the Buick Regal from 1978 through 1987. It has many pictures and shows actual Service Bulletins covering the Turbo Regals from GM. Very informative with many pictures and illustrations. It measures 6" x 9" and has 260+ pages, and was published in 1992.

1985-1987 Buick Turbo Regal -
CONVERSION VACUUM BRAKE BOOSTER KIT with New Correct Size PIN for the Stock Brake Pedal

This is another option to consider if you have a fairly stock 1985-1987 Buick Turbo Regal and want to switch from the original powermaster brake system.

This kit comes complete with everything you need as shown. This kit is very similar to Part #7625 however, it does not include a factory vacuum brake pedal. Instead we include a correct size machined pin that needs to be welded to the original stock brake pedal. Directions showing proper measurements come with it, so this machined pin can be done by a welder on the original brake pedal rod.

It comes with a REBUILT Cardone brake booster and a BRAND new master cylinder. The booster has a 9" diameter. The master cylinder and vacuum booster in this kit are exactly what GM used in 1986-1987 on a non-Turbo Regal application.

There are no clearance issues with this unit and the stock remote power steering reservoir.

It also comes with our new vacuum block with gasket and hardware. It has the vacuum port similar to what GM used on the 1989 Turbo Trans Am. We also include 2 feet of vacuum hose and our new reproduction gasket to firewall.

This booster kit uses the same factory holes in the firewall as the powermaster.

Since nothing gets cut or drilled related to the original powermaster, the original powermaster can be re-used should you want to convert back to the factory set up at a later date. However, you would need to acquire a brake pedal for a Turbo Regal to have it function properly.

We highly recommend installation be done by a qualified mechanic, since you have to properly bleed the brakes and need to weld the new brake pedal pin to the factory pedal rod. You also have to cut off the original pin from the brake pedal rod. Make sure the system is operating properly under all conditions.

Remember, your best option is always to stay with the factory GM powermaster brake system. This unit is only to be used with a stock or a fairly stock Turbo Regal. A modified engine or one with a performance cam would cause vacuum levels to be greatly reduced, which could cause braking problems. One possible solution would be to purchase an additional vacuum canister to retain proper vacuum levels from Summit or Jegs.

When purchasing this kit, you may also want to purchase Part #7218, Stainless Braided Brake Hoses, as these will improve the stopping ability.

For our rebuilt powermaster brake unit, See our Part #7021 Rebuilt Powermaster Brake Unit.
However, if you have a STOCK engine, there is adequate vacuum to switch over to a vacuum brake system. We have another option: Our Part #7625 - Conversion Vacuum Brake Booster Kit with vacuum brake pedal.

The difference between #7625 and this kit #7679, is that this kit comes with the correct pin instead of a vacuum brake pedal.

NOTE - A vacuum brake system is NOT recommended for a Turbo Regal with a modified engine or one with a performance cam because vacuum levels are greatly reduced, which could cause braking problems.

NOTE - Be sure to check out the other options we offer for converting the Turbo Regal brake system - Part #7625 Conversion Vacuum Brake Booster Kit with Vacuum Brake Pedal, Part #7617 Hydro-Boost Conversion Kit, or #7618 HYDRATECH Hydro-Boost System conversion. Related parts to consider are #7218 Stainless Braided Brake Hoses and #7021 Rebuilt Powermaster Brake Unit.

NOTE - We recommend installation be done by a qualified auto mechanic. Welding is required.

7679 - 1985-1987 Buick Turbo Regal - Conversion Vacuum Brake Booster Kit with New Correct Size PIN for the Stock Brake Pedal - $329.95

NOTE - ABOUT LINKS IN THE INNER CIRCLE -

We have heard from a couple people that have had problems with the links in our Inner Circle.

When we check the links, they work fine. However, if you are not able to be directed to the exact website page or internet site, you can "copy" and "paste" the link into the URL in your browser (such as Safari, Firefox, Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, etc.) If it doesn't link in one browser, it may work in another.

Most people having problems are using Internet Explorer… If you are having issues with links, try another browser to see if it works.

You may need to "UPDATE" your browser to be use you are using the current version.

NOTE ABOUT PHOTOS ON THE WEBSITE -

We have heard from a couple people that have viewed the photos on the website. Because these have to be low-resolution photos to work on the Inner Circle segments on the website, any photos of text don't appear clear when enlarged. This is a problem when you are trying to see numbers, such as those on the VIN labels or pages from Options booklet. Also, because of photo reproduction and computer screen variations, the colors may not be true to the actual product or photo.

If you would like to have us email you any photo at the higher resolution for viewing, just email us and we will email them to you. Be sure to be specific on which pictures you want to see - Reference Inner Circle date and photo number 1, 2, 3 or 4 - [email protected]

ABOUT OUR EMAILS -

Any inquiries concerning used parts, you must email me direct - [email protected] - I will answer you. However, if I fail to answer you within 24 hours, please email us again. Since expanding into used parts, I get a lot of emails and sometimes I may forget your request or may not remember who requested the item.
