Greetings Turbo Regal Inner Circle Members 07-10-2019 –

Here is the link to this Inner Circle and photos on our website.

NEW MINI CONTEST –

Here is this week’s mini contest. No answer will be considered until after 3:30 eastern time today Wednesday, July 10th.

I removed this gauge cluster (shown in Photo 1) from a foreign car in a junkyard many years ago. As you can see the mileage is quite low and it was turbo powered. Also,” unusual for the year was that the speedometer read up to 160 mph. That’s a bit higher than your Turbo Regal speedometer reads!

You can probably see the car make logo on it. You need to determine the make, model, and year this dash came out of. Also provide proof for your answer. The first correct response to all 4 parts of the question will be awarded a prize. See Photo 1.

PHOTO 1 – We show this foreign car gauge cluster. You need to ID the make, model, and exact year this gauge cluster appeared in. Email your 4-part guess with proof to [email protected] No entry will be considered until after 3:30 today. A prize will be awarded to the first winner that identifies the gauge cluster correctly.

RIP “MAD MAGAZINE” –

It is hard to believe, but after 67 years, Mad magazine will cease to publish their monthly magazine. They had a very long run.

For many years, I would buy each new issue. You can be sure there will be a high demand for the last issue next month, August. Already sellers have them listed on ebay. Years ago I purchased an Alfred E. Neuman statue in his famous pose of ebay. The label on the bottom says, “Made exclusively for the Warner Bros store”. It was made in the USA. The date of production is 1996. It stands approximately 14 inches tall. I think I paid $50 for it years ago. It is quite heavy and well made.

Several years ago, Eileen purchased a bendable Alfred E. Neuman doll from a thrift store. It was made in China in 1988.

You can bet the value of this unique statue and bendable Alfred E. Neuman will be increasing with the demise of the monthly magazine. See Photo 2 for a photo of the Alfred E. Neuman statue with his famous quote “What---me worry?” Also pictured is the bendable Alfred E. Neuman doll.

An associate editor at Mad magazine has suggested that the "E" stands for "enigma," because we'll never know what it stands for.

PHOTO 2 – Shows the Alfred E. Newman statue I have in my personal collection. It is in mint condition. The statue stands approximately 14 inches high. Also shown is the bendable Alfred E. Newman doll that is approximately 8 inches tall.

HERE IS MY “MAD MAGAZINE” STORY -

It was 1980s and Eileen was involved with calligraphy and published a magazine for calligraphers, Calligraphy Idea Exchange. We were invited to a special annual Type Directors Club dinner in New York City. This was a major event, by invitation only. I had to wear a suit and tie and was instructed ahead of time, “Please do not embarrass me.”

So, we are sitting at a round dinner table the gentleman on one side of me was a writer for Time magazine. Others at the table also held prestigious positions in the writing, calligraphy, and type design world, including the calligrapher Robert Boyajian who had invited my wife and I to this affair.

During the meal, the gentleman who wrote for Time magazine asked me what magazines did I read? Without any hesitation, I said Mad Magazine. Eileen wanted to crawl under the table. Seconds later, a famous calligrapher Jeanyee Wong said she did some work and lettering for Mad Magazine. She explained that they were extremely particular in their stories, so if something is misspelled it was on purpose.

As you can imagine, Eileen was stunned that there was a connection with her friend and Mad magazine. True story!

QUAKERTOWN 4TH OF JULY CAR SHOW –

Last week I attended the Quakertown 4th of July car show. The day was superhot and humid. I did not see any Turbo Regals at the show. I did spot some really nice classic and performance cars.

PHOTO 3 – The top left photo shows a one-of-a-kind method to add a turbo to a diesel engine and at the same time create a very visual effect! The middle and top right photos show the Corvette powered S10 truck with the Hydro-boost brake system. The top middle and top right photo shows a highly detailed 6-cylinder engine in an Anglia. It shows the hand-painted phrase on the firewall, “I could’ve had a V8.” The bottom photos show a late-model S10 pickup truck that was Corvette powered. It shows the Corvette powered S10 truck with the Hydro-boost brake system.

PHOTO 4 – The top left photo shows the iconic 1935 Auburn Speedster. The top right shows a metal plaque on the dash of the 1935 Auburn Speedster that states, “This certifies that this Auburn Automobile has been driven 100.8 mph before shipment.” Under this was the engineer’s signature. That is a real testament as to what the Auburn Speedster was capable of back in 1935! The bottom left shows the front of a Daimler. The bottom middle photo shows the highly-detailed engine. I am not sure of the vintage, but the highly-polished engine and accessories was very impressive! The bottom right photo shows the very primitive looking interior of the Daimler.

SIDE NOTE ABOUT THE 1935 AUBURN SPEEDSTER –

Gordon Buehrig is credited with designing the Auburn Speedster. He worked on some of the real classics back then, which are highly sought after today. They include the Stutz Black Hawk, Dusenberg J Model, and the Cord 810 with retractable headlights and front-wheel drive. He later worked on the 1951 Ford Victoria coupe and the Continental Mark II for Ford Motor Company before retiring.

His credentials are very impressive and he holds 15 patents. One patent involves a popular option on the Turbo Regals. I am referring to the T-Tops, which he developed in 1948. The first U.S. production car to feature T-Tops was the 1968 Corvette.

Today I wonder if any classic car collector was smart enough to get Gordon Buehrig’s autograph years ago. One can only imagine what his autograph on a car he designed is worth today!

BREAKING NEWS - 1987 ORIGINAL GRAND NATIONAL HARDTOP - FOR SALE –

I just got word a few days ago that one of our customers, who has owned their 1987 Grand National hardtop since July of 1988, wants to sell it. They expect to deliver the car for me to sell in the next few days. The car is all stock with 127,000 miles on it.

It is well optioned and all the paint is original. Options include: rear defogger, am/fm cassette, concert sound II, body side molding, door edge guards, limited slip, tilt, cruise, power antenna, and power trunk release. It is hard to find ones that are all original and has had the same owner for over 30 years. The owner emailed me photo of the SPID label, so I could determine the options beforehand.

We have not yet worked out a price, until I actually see the car. I have seen several photos of the car. Email me personally [email protected] if you are interested. Once I have the car here, I will be putting a price on it. Again, it is very difficult to find examples like this that have not been for sale before and are 100% original. They purchased it in July of 1988 with 14,000 miles on it. The car has had the same owner since 1988.

MORE GOOD NEWS – JEEP LOWER STEERING SHAFTS #7574 –

Our supplier has located a few more of these desirable lower steering shafts, part #7574. These steering shafts replace the fiber-like rag joint your factory shaft has. The Jeep shaft has metal universal joints at both ends and is also a thinner design, which gives you more room under the hood on the driver’s side. This is a nice upgrade that offers several benefits over a 30-plus-year-old lower steering shift. You must email me direct [email protected] if you want one of these from this new shipment due in this week.

DUE IN LATER THIS WEEK –

We will finally have part #6700, the steel gash hood shocks for the 1982-1987 Regals all models, back in stock. The price is $38.95 per set plus shipping. It has been over a month since we had them in stock.

DOYLESTOWN MAIN STREET CAR SHOW –

One of the biggest car show events in our area is held Saturday, July 20th from 5 pm until 10 pm. This event occupies the main downtown streets of Doylestown, PA and features over 500 cars and trucks of all kinds. The rain date is Sunday, July 21st. This is an event well worth attending as it brings out many of the exotic cars that you seldom see in this very picturesque setting. I plan to attend as a spectator. I always get to see a lot of old friends.

UPDATE ON THE TURBO REGAL WRIST WATCH –

As of this writing I have a few Turbo Regal wrist watches left that have not been sold/reserved. I am still waiting for my shipment to arrive. If you have already reserved one, you will get your watch or watches once I get my shipment. Again, if you want one, you must email me direct [email protected] to reserve one of the 10 I have coming in. The price is $36.95 each, which includes shipping to the basic 48 states. See the Rare Parts section.

FANTASIA ARTIST MILTON QUON RIP AT AGE 105 –

Milton Quon was the third Chinese-American hired by Walt Disney back in 1939. Milton Quon lived a long life, and when I read his obituary, the last line caught my attention. He is survived by his wife Peggy. Even living to the ripe old age of 105, his wife still outlived him.

ONE-OF-A-KIND HISTORIC CANE/WALKING STICK COMING UP FOR AUCTION –

This may hit the record for the most money ever paid for a cane/walking stick. Besides the fact that it lights up, it holds a special place in history. This cane or walking stick as it is sometimes called was used by First Class passenger Ella White in Titanic’s lifeboat #8, which was used to signal for help after the Titanic sank on April 15, 1912.

It is expected to fetch between $300,000 and $500,000. I just read in this past Sunday’s newspaper that two brothers claim that the cane, which once belonged to Ella White, disappeared from their childhood home in the 1970s. They intend to challenge the upcoming auction.

2005 PERSONAL TAHOE UPDATE –

The dealership did have a deposit on my Tahoe, however the buyer could not get financing. Getting a car loan is the issue buyers have when trying to buy a vehicle over a certain age. So, at this writing my 2005 Tahoe is still available. It is in remarkable condition and has always been kept up anytime it needed anything. All the fluids have been flushed as well over the years something that most owners don’t ever do. The price is $7895. The Tahoe has probably almost every possible option Chevy offered that year. We may consider partial trade since we have a sales license. You would look a long time before you find one as nice inside, outside, and underneath as nice as this Tahoe.

CARSMARTS RADIO IS ON THE AIR AND ON THE WEB! –

Turbo V6 enthusiast Steve Saffier (who produced “The Dennis Kirban Story” on YouTube last year) is producer and host of a new automotive radio program broadcasting live every Saturday from 11am - 12 noon on 610 ESPN radio (the old WIP 610 am for those in the area.) The show talks about different aspects of the car world and Steve’s affinity for Turbo Regals and Syclone/Typhoons often is expressed in nearly every show.

You can tune in live or livestream the show at http://www.610espn.com from anywhere in the world.

TIPS AND IDEAS YOU HAVE TRIED -

If there are any tips or ideas you want to share with our readers, email me –[email protected]

TIP FROM KIRBAN –

My supply of the 100% correct “Made in England” radiator caps is getting quite low. Although that same radiator cap was used by GM on several other models after 1987, they are quickly disappearing in junkyards. That radiator cap is quite unique since it says, “Made in England” and has no ears on it. Don’t delay as the price will be increasing soon since my inventory is dwindling. Part #KE003 priced still at $15.

NOTE - ABOUT LINKS IN THE INNER CIRCLE -

We have heard from a couple people that have had problems with the links in our Inner Circle.

When we check the links, they work fine. However, if you are not able to be directed to the exact website page or internet site, you can "copy" and "paste" the link into the URL in your browser (such as Safari, Firefox, Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, etc.) If it doesn't link in one browser, it may work in another.

Most people having problems are using Internet Explorer. If you are having issues with links, try another browser to see if it works.

You may need to "UPDATE" your browser to be use you are using the current version.

NOTE ABOUT PHOTOS ON THE WEBSITE -

We have heard from a couple people that have viewed the photos on the website. Because these must be low-resolution photos to work on the Inner Circle segments on the website, any photos of text don't appear clear when enlarged. This is a problem when you are trying to see numbers, such as those on the VIN labels or pages from Options booklet. Also, because of photo reproduction and computer screen variations, the colors may not be true to the actual product or photo.

If you would like to have us email you any photo at the higher resolution for viewing, just email us and we will email them to you. Be sure to be specific on which pictures you want to see - Reference Inner Circle date and photo number 1, 2, 3 or 4 - [email protected]

ABOUT OUR EMAILS -

Any inquiries concerning used parts, you must email me direct - [email protected] I will answer you. However, if I fail to answer you within 24 hours, please email us again. Since expanding into used parts, I get a lot of emails and sometimes I may forget your request or may not remember who requested the item.

IN CLOSING –

This hot humid weather hurts the power the Turbo Regal puts out. They thrive on cool air.
