Greetings Turbo Regal Inner Circle Members 07-20-2016 -

“TOP TEN REASONS” GRAND NATIONAL T-SHIRT -

We just had this “Top Ten Reasons I Own a Buick Grand National” T shirt printed. It is done on a high-quality ash grey T-shirt in five colors. Shirts are pre-shrunk 1% polyester and 99% heavy-weight cotton. (See the New Products section for more details.)

As a member of our Inner Circle, we have a very special deal for you.

The company that did our new “Top Ten Reasons” T-shirts made the first run of them incorrect by putting the design on the back. The correct format is the design on the front.

So, I have a run of each size - LARGE, XLARGE, and XXLARGE - with the design on the back.

Our supply of the incorrect ones is very limited and will not even mentioned on our website.

So, as an Inner Circle member, If you buy any of the correct T-shirts (design on the front) priced at $15.95 for LARGE, or XLARGE or $17.95 for the XXLARGE, you can buy any of the wrong ones (design on the back) in any of the 3 sizes for just $4 each more.

Plus, you can buy more than one of the wrong ones at $4 each until our initial supply is gone. All you need to do is buy one T-shirt that is correct at the regular price. Super buy!

Since it is ash grey, you could take the $4 “Top Ten Reasons” T-shirt and use it as a seat cover for your Grand National for the back portion of your bucket seat. A great way to protect the Pallex material!

NOTE - the $4 “Top Ten Reasons” T-shirts are not on our website. You have to call our office and order one of the correct ones for either $15.95 or $17.95 (depending on the size you want) and any of the three sizes with the wrong format is just $4 each. No limit on the number of shirts you can buy while supplies last.

NOTE - We also have that same “Top Ten Reasons” design available on an acrylic display, part #7726.

PHOTO 1 - Photo on the left shows the “Top Ten Reasons” T-Shirt design artwork on the left and one of the ash grey T-shirt with the design printed on the back on the right. Remember, buy any of the correct ones (design on the front), and for $4 more you get your choice of sizes for the ones with the design on the back.

Their mistake is your gain!

A LOOK AT ALTERNATORS continued -

Because of the increase of sales of our 100% brand new correct-looking 1986-1987 Turbo Regal alternators, we had our supplier look into making the 1984 alternator for the Turbo Regals.

According to his application books dated 1989, that alternator is rated at 94 amps. He can make them and have it put out 120 amps like the later ones.

It makes no real sense to just make them 94 amps.

Watch for update and pricing shortly on this new correct-looking 1984 Turbo Regal alternator rated at 120 amps.

According to his books, it appears the 1985 Turbo Regals also uses the 120 amp alternator that we list for the 1986-1987 Turbo Regals. Because so few of the 1984-1985 Turbo Regals were produced we have devised a way for you to tell which alternator is on your 1984-1985 Turbo Regal.

The 1984 looks different than the 1985-1987 Turbo Regals. Because 1985 falls into a grey area, there is one sure way to determine what style alternator you have. As you know, the voltage regulator is internal and it is what your factory plug plugs into on the alternator. The key difference is the 1984 Turbo Regal has a 2-prong plug and the later years has a 4-pin plug.

PHOTO 2 - We show both of the internal voltage regulators GM used in the 1984-1987 Turbo Regal alternators. The white regulator on the left is the 2-prong regulator used in the 1984 Turbo Regals and possibly some of the 1985 Turbo Regals. The black one pictured on the right has an internal 4-pin connector indicated by an arrow in the photo.

All this would be explained when we introduce the 1984 Turbo Regal alternator. Like everything else electronic, they have gotten a lot smaller than what I remember in the 1960s. Back then the voltage regulator was about the size of your fist and was usually mounted on the firewall or the inner fender.

We may a sample and pricing by our next issue. Once we have it available, we will be able to cover all the Turbo Regals from 1984 through the 1987 models. All 100% brand new, correct looking, with a Warranty, and built by one individual for quality control.

MORE INFORMATION ON STOCK RADIOS -

I figured I would post photos of the AM/FM cassette players we have available for the Turbo Regals.

The most popular radio I come across in junkyards is the AM/FM with seek-and-scan cassette and digital clock feature. The SPID code for this radio is “UM6.” This radio was used for several years after 1987.

The later ones, which these are, used a different plug. This means I have to include a jumper harness and antenna adapter so the factory harness will plug into it correctly. All the radios I sell have that jumper harness included, since finding 1984-1987 radios is almost impossible today.

Visibly these are 100% identical to the 1984-1987 Turbo Regal radios. I do bench test each radio with a power source to make sure they power up and the AM/FM appears on the screen. I do not test them with speakers, nor do I indicate the cassette player works, only that the radios do indeed power up. They don’t come with the brackets to secure it in the dash.

PHOTO 3 - Shows 3 of these UM6 style radios, which would be correct looking for any 1984-1987 Turbo Regal. This style radio was one step down from the most expensive radio. The photo shows 3, but I actually have 5 available. All are very nice looking with nothing missing on the front display. (See Rare Parts listing for prices).

The top of the line radio is the AM/FM stereo with seek-and-scan cassette digital clock and graphic equalizer. It is better known as the AM/FM with EQ. The SPID code was “UX1.” This carried a very high price tag of $504 in 1987 alone. Even though that radio appeared in other GM cars during that time frame, I seldom come across them probably due to the high cost.

Like all the other possible radio choices, these radios also had the glossy black face.

With that in mind, one GM car model usually had the top-of-the-line AM/FM with EQ feature - the Cadillacs. The difference is the AM/FM radios with EQ option in the Cadillacs had a satin black face and the two tuner knobs had the Caddy crest on them. (The two knobs can easily be switched to the Buick knobs, which I do). These radios also came out of later than 1987 Cadillacs, so they have the jumper harness included to plug into your harness. It is extremely difficult to find GM cars prior to 1990 in any of the major salvage yards I go to. In other words, I am probably about 5-6 years too late to finding G-body examples in our local salvage yards.

PHOTO 4 - Our photo shows 3 of the Cadillac AM/FM stereo with cassette and EQ feature. Very similar to our top-of-the-line AM/FM cassette with EQ option, except the face is satin black and it has the words Symphony Sound on the front. It also has an outline around the two knobs on the left, where our AM/FM cassette with EQ only has an outline around the main part, and sometimes has no outline. These 3 are for sale under Rare Parts in this issue. They been tested and each powers up on AM and FM. I include the jumper harness but no brackets to secure it to the dash.

BREAKING NEWS - 1984-1987 TURBO REGAL RADIO BRACKETS -

The one company located in our business complex that has made the kit for the flip-down stay-down license plate brackets just made me a set of reproduction brackets to secure the radio in the dash.

The brackets are made in aluminum (no rust issues) to bolt the factory radios into the dash of any 1984-1987 Turbo Regals. These brackets seem to be unique as no other Buick model used the exact same bracket as the Regal models did.

These may also fit the 1986-1988 Monte Carlo SS cars. The earlier Monte Carlo SS models still used the older style radios that have the volume and tuner knob at each end, rather than the style Buick used in the Regals.

I hope to have production soon and pricing. Watch for updates.

NOTE - If you purchase one of my radios, we will give you a special price on the new reproduction radio brackets that we are having made.

SPID LABELS AND THE TURBO REGALS -

We still need to see more GNX SPID labels. I need to know if they show a J41 or J42 code or neither code.

Also VD6 and VD7 codes for aluminum bumper supports.

If no code is indicated for the bumper supports, does your GNX have aluminum supports front and in the rear?

Early indications seem to point to the fact GM was not that accurate with the SPID codes on the label. I have now seen several SPID labels that show neither a J41 or J42 code, which refers to steel or aluminum rear brake drums on Turbo Regals. This includes one Grand National with 100 SPID codes, yet lists no code for indicating steel or aluminum brake drums (J41 or J42). With that said, check out your car’s SPID label and see if you have a J41 or J42 code. Email me your findings - [email protected]

SEATS COVERS OR THE WORD FREE -

As one can imagine, the one subject last week that got a lot of immediate attention was asking someone to test fit slip-on seat covers for free. I received over 50 responses in the first hour. I am not sure if it was the word FREE or the fact there appears to be a huge demand for slip-on seat covers to protect the original Pallex material.

I currently have two different styles of slip-on seat covers that I will be having tested by one of our Turbo Regal enthusiasts in the next 5-10 days.

1986-1987 TURBO REGAL MASS AIR FLOW SENSOR CORES -

See the photo on the right in Photo 2 in last week’s issue (7-13-2016). It is these original AC Delco mass air flow sensor cores that we badly need.

Cardone does not have any of them in their supply of cores. We need these original cores to meet the needs of other customers.

If you have any original sensors with the plug pointing downward like in that photo, we will give you a Letter of Credit for $40 against any of our website parts.

The cheaper way to ship is by Mail.

MAILING ADDRESS - Kirban Performance, PO Box 1199, Plumsteadville, Pa 18949 with your Name, Address and Phone Number.

UPS ADDRESS - Kirban Performance, 6201 Kellers Church Road, Plumsteadville, Pa 18949 with your Name, Address and Phone Number.

Help us help others. Otherwise we will be forced to discontinue this service for our customers. To my knowledge no one has reproduced it as of yet. It would require the blessing from GM since it has the AC Delco wording on it.

POWER ANTENNAS UPDATE -

Currently we have 4 or 5 rebuild power antennas in stock ready to go. These have been completely rebuilt with the steel cable with a plastic sleeve installed. The weakness in the factory and reproduction power antennas is the internal plastic cable that breaks due to age, not usage!

Also all of our rebuilt power antennas have the correct hex-head tip on top of the mast. These rebuilt power antennas far superior to any of the reproduction power antennas that are available. They carry a one-year Warranty. Limited supplies are available, since I have to find originals to get rebuilt.

The price is just $149.95 to your door. Our part number on our website is #7703. You must contact our office to get one of these - 215-766-1611 x 0.

POWER ANTENNA MAINTANANCE -

Many owners of Turbo Regals equipped with a power antenna neglect to keep the antenna clean and lubricated with a light oil.

According to a Buick Owner’s Manual, this should be done every 6 month. It’s very critical on our cars because the tip of our antennas is a small hex head tip. So, when it’s in the down position on the fender, dirt can easily get inside the opening. If the tip is the mushroom-style, that basically covers the opening when the antenna is in the down position.

I used to always make a point to oil the antennas on the cars we sold. You would be surprised at how dirty the mast can get.

According to a Buick Owner’s Manual, you should do this several times until the mast is clean and dry. Keeping it in fine working order is worth the effort, compared to having to remove the power antenna if it fails!

UPDATE ON SUMMERTIME MINI CONTEST -

Since announcing the summertime mini contest we have 1 entry of 50 codes at the low end.

At the high end we have 1 entry of 100 codes! The one at the high end with 100 codes I think will be very tough to beat. The owner special ordered it brand new and virtually check marked every option! I have a good friend Jason out of Canada that owns Reggie Jackson fully loaded 1987 Turbo T Limited and his car comes in at 98 codes on the SPID label.

Below are all the rules. There is still time to enter, if you can beat either of our current 2 entries.

Dealing with the current topic - SPID codes - I am curious to see who among our readers has the fewest codes on their SPID label and also who has the most codes on their SPID label.

The 2 winners will each receive a $50 Letter of Credit against any of our website parts.

Here are the rules that must be followed exactly.

In case of a tie, the earliest email will be the winner for that category.

Your answer must be emailed to me personally - [email protected] and include a photo of your actual SPID label.

The car must be a 1984-1987 Turbo Regal, which includes the GNX, WE4, and 1987 Turbo Limited models.

So submit your photo and information to be a possible winner.

The contest is open to all our customers, but not in a Turbo Regal related business.

The deadline to submit your entry is 6 pm eastern time, this Saturday, July 23rd with the winners announced in the July 27th issue.

Actually the winner of each category really has a very rare Turbo Regal no matter if it’s a Grand National or a regular Turbo Regal.

Good luck all participants.

SPEAKING OF OPTIONS -

In the August issue of Car and Driver, there was a 1-page article giving the facts about car manufacturers doing away with low-optioned cars.

For example - Today less than 1% of the total car production has a fixed steering column.

I can recall of the 300-plus Turbo Regals we sold at the most I had 3 or 4 that had a non tilt column.

One in particular was a bare bones Grand National with non tilt steering column and crank windows. The rear drum brakes only appear on about 5% of the cars being built today. Only 1% get no factory air conditioning. About 6% of the vehicles get hand crank windows.

It is simply not worth it for car makers to tool up space for different options or no options. If I recall correctly, in our cars the hole for the power window switch is in the same spot as the hand crank.

A real surprise is about 16% of car production get hubcaps or wheel covers. I don’t think I have ever seen a Porsche or Mercedes sporting hubcaps or wheel covers!

MORE ABOUT OPTIONS -

Here is a fact you may not be aware of - The 2010 SC430 Lexus, which was their small two-door coupe, was the very last production car that offered a tape deck. The “tape deck” or “cassette format” as it is also referred to has now been discontinued for about 6 years.

The 8-track format first appeared in GM cars in 1967 and had a very short life span. The cassette format appeared around 1970-1971, at least in the Pontiac cars. Our cars almost made it to the introduction of the CD format, but fell short by 1-2 years. One can only predict how many years the CD format will be offered in the cars by manufacturers.

NATIONAL SLEEP FOUNDATION -

One popular ad on TV concerning pillows always mentioned it is backed by the National Sleep Foundation. I often wonder what the qualifications would be to be part of this group. Sounds like a very easy job to me!

IMPORTANT NEWS ON REPRODUCTION ALUMINUM DRUMS -

I am still waiting for word from Cardone as to when I can expect to have more aluminum brake drums available. If you wish a set from the next shipment, contact our office - 215-766-1611 x 0. We would not charge your credit card until we have them in stock. The price is $234.95 plus shipping.

REBUILT ORIGNAL POWER ANTENNAS -

To have your power antenna rebuilt, you must first contact Christina at our office - 215-766-1611 x 0 - to place the order with your credit card information.

The total price for the rebuild is just $99.95. You must have an original AC Delco power antenna. This would have a riveted bracket to the tube and have a collapsible top at the top of the tube. Because of the quality of the various replacement and reproduction power antennas our source does not have the parts to fix them. Only the original AC Delco ones that came in your car from the factory can be rebuilt. This includes return shipping to you to any of the basic 48 states. We will give you a “RO” number (Repair Order) and the address you need to ship your antenna to. It does not get shipped to us! The RO number is proof it has been paid for. This RO number must be on your label on your power antenna. You must attach a label with your name and address to it so you are assured of getting your original power antenna back.

NOTE - Do NOT send any of the bezel parts (metal bezel and plastic bezel under the metal one.) Only send the basic antenna. You must unplug the under-the-hood 3-wire harness (gray, white and green wires) from the antenna. Do NOT cut any of the wires.

NOTE - He will be taking a three-week vacation the end of July and the beginning of August. No shipments can be made during these three weeks. We will post reminders about this as the time draws closer.

We also have a limited supply of original AC Delco power antennas currently being rebuilt by our source. This is part #7703. These rebuilt antennas will have the original-style hex tip on the mast. The price is $149.95, which includes shipping to any of the basic 48 states. You must call Christina at our office 215-766-1611 x 0 to purchase one, as supplies are limited. Currently, we only have a few getting rebuilt. If you call and want a rebuilt antenna, we would not charge your credit card until we can ship it.

One thing we recommend you do prior to any power antenna removal is to purchase the Pete Serio booklet - “1984-1987 Turbo Regal - Power Antenna Removal and Installation Guide,” our part #6976.

1986-1987 Buick Turbo Regal -
Replacement BLACK METAL STOCK BREATHERS (2)

This is one of the key engine parts to keeping your Turbo Regal engine original. This is the black metal breather that came on the front of the passenger’s valve cover. A tube went into the other end that went to the inlet bell on the turbo.

If this breather is neglected, it becomes saturated with oil. Once it is saturated, the oil travels through and down the connecting tube, through the turbo inlet bell, and into the intercooler. The oil can coat the intercooler and the connecting hoses, and eventually gum up the throttle body.

We offer them as a pair, so you will have an extra breather.

Supplies of these original-style black breathers may become limited. Other versions are not black, nor are they metal.

These are identical to what came on your car when it was new.

NOTE ABOUT PHOTOS ON THE WEBSITE -

We have heard from a couple people that have viewed the photos on the website. Because these have to be low-resolution photos to work on the Inner Circle segments on the website, any photos of text don't appear clear when enlarged. This is a problem when you are trying to see numbers, such as those on the VIN labels or pages from Options booklet. Also, because of photo reproduction and computer screen variations, the colors may not be true to the actual product or photo.

If you would like to have us email you any photo at the higher resolution for viewing, just email us and we will email them to you. Be sure to be specific on which pictures you want to see - Reference Inner Circle date and photo number 1, 2, 3 or 4 - [email protected]
