Greetings Turbo Regal Inner Circle Members 08-15-2018 -

AN IDEA THAT JUST DID NOT PAN OUT –

Early last week I heard from a customer of ours that lives in western Pennsylvania. He informed me that George Thorogood was coming to his area to perform a concert at the Spyglass Ridge Winery located in Sunbury, Pennsylvania. He also said he was heading up security for the event. He asked me if I had any ideas for George to autograph. I thought wow with that inside connection maybe he can get George Thorogood to sign a few autographs even if we had to pay him.

I had the perfect item for George Thorogood to sign. I had about 15 left of the “Bad to the Bone” decals that we used to sell. I quickly mailed them to Scott our customer and kept my fingers crossed that he would be able to pull it off. No other car is associated with the saying “Bad to the Bone”. Going by memory I think it was Paul Zazarine the editor of Musclecar Review that first used that term in print.

Well Scott tried before and after the concert and it was a no go. He even offered him money. Apparently, George Thorogood does not do autographs. It would have been cool had it worked out, but unfortunately, even with our best efforts it did not happen.

UPDATE ON DARRELL’S NEXT PROJECT –

Here are several photos where he has started to cut and stretch for 2005 GTO frame to fit the 1967 Lemans body to. The kid is nothing short of amazing. It’s not as though he has an assembly manual to work from!

PHOTO 1 – Shows three different views of the frame being separated on the 2005 GTO. The rate of progress car could be a turnkey by Christmas!

GM BANNERS UP FOR GM APPROVAL –

We picture the 4 sample banners that we had gotten made locally to make sure they would be correct before sending them to our source that will submit them to GM to be approved. In the next photo is the one and only sample of each of the next four to get GM approved.

PHOTO -2 - Shows the GS Buick, Oldsmobile 442, 1968 GTO, and the 1970 GTO. The 1970 GTO is 34 inches by 36 inches where as the other 3 are approximately 2 ft by 3 ft. See Rare Parts section for special sale price.

REGALS AND TRAILERING –

Among my collection of original 1984-1987 Buick literature I have a 6-page brochure that covers 1987 Buick trailer-towing Guide. In it is a chart listing all the Buick 1987 models and engine combinations and what each combination in weight can safely tow.

Under the Regal models it covers the regular V6 engine and V8 engines against various axle ratios which plays an important part in towing. This brochure makes a clear point that a Turbo 3.8 Regal is not to be used for towing nor is the 2.0 turbo Skyhawk to be used for towing. It’s amazing how sometimes you see people towing that clearly exceeds what they should be towing based on the tow vehicle. It may never be an issue until you got to stop real quick!

PHOTO- 3 - We show the front and back covers of this original 1987 Buick Trailer-Towing Guide.

GERMAN 1984 BUICK REGAL SALES FLYER –

Again going through some of my original Buick literature I came across another original Buick flyer where the picture side of the Buick Regal models is in English and the back side of the same flyer for the specifications is all in German. The brochure has a print date of 9/83. It seems strange that the flyer does not even show a Grand National.

PHOTO 4 – We show on the left the front side of this German flyer showing the various Regal models. The photo to the right is the back side listing all the specifications and it’s all in German.

BREAKING NEWS -

Just got word of an original 1987 Grand National hardtop that has less than 300 miles on it. It has been completely freshened up from its 30 year hibernation in a warehouse in Texas. I am waiting for more info. Even the window sticker is still attached to the window! Asking price is $62,900. Very reasonable!

Also we will soon be offering the slick product the "Window Racer." This plug and play product makes your power windows quicker something that is severely lacking in the Turbo Regals.

1986-1987 TURBO REGAL & 1989 TRANS AM OEM GM SERPENTINE BELT –

We now carry the factory original GM serpentine belt. This is a critical item for any restoration as it has the GM part number and GM lettering on the actual belt. More costly than a typical aftermarket serpentine belt, but one that helps keep your car original. It is very critical that you retain a factory correct alternator as the pulley on the alternator is a unique diameter. The alternators we sell have the correct pulley on them. Sometimes it pays to pay more and get the correct looking part from the start. Years ago when the cars were only worth about ten grand buying aftermarket replacement parts would have been ok.

Now with values constantly increasing buyers are becoming more aware and are seeking examples that are as close to factory original as possible. When we perfect making 1987 air for the interiors we would make a fortune!

NEVER COMPLAIN ABOUT THE COST OF REPRODUCTION SHEET METAL PARTS –

I just read where they now have available for the 1954-1957 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL “Gullwing” coupes front fenders and various other sheet metal parts. Parts are low production and labor intensive to make. The phrase associated with the price is “Prices are commensurate with the value of the 300 SL coupe. Front fenders are approximately $14,255 per side. I am sure you got to paint to match!

This reminds me of a story from my past. When I bought my first tow truck I was still in the Army so I had to do the towing at night. I was stationed at the Philadelphia Induction Center so I came home each night. Most of my towing business initially was junking cars. The local junkyard I dealt with would let me dump the cars at night by his main gate. (Years earlier I would drive one of his one daughters to summer school). I remember him telling me he had a real unusual German cars years earlier, but his wife hated the way the doors opened up instead of the convention way. He had a Gullwing Mercedes-Benz 300 SL.

THINGS THAT FAIL TO MAKE SENSE TO ME –

Few months back at one of the You Pull It Yards I go to I spotted a horse and buggy tied up in the parking lot. I assume the buggy driver had a backup car that must have needed parts.

Recently on a hot humid day I spotted an older gentleman riding a bike up a hill while smoking a cigarette. Seems to me this would be counterproductive!

The airport worker took a plane on a joy ride from a Washington State airport. Apparently he was able to perform several clever maneuvers for over one hour before failing to safely land the aircraft. He claimed to have learned everything from playing video games. He must have missed that critical lesson on how to properly land one and be able to walk away! A shame as every talk show host would have been after him for an interview. He can claim the record for being the first with this flight of fancy stealing a passenger plane!

JUST ONE LEFT OF THE LIMITED UNIQUE BUICK BANNERS -

The GM licensed company we deal with made 2 banners that they don’t currently plan to continue to make and they sent them to me. Only have the one Buick Motorsports left. It has the all red turbo-six logo. The price is $36.95 and $10 shipping to the basic 48 states. See photo 4 in the 07-08-2108 Inner Circle. NEW LOWER PRICE.

ONE OF THE “BEST OF THE BEST” GNXs FOR SALE -

During my search last month for a GNX, I did hear from one-long-time customer of ours that still has his GNX from brand new. It has not been advertised as of yet, that I am aware of. They don’t want to really advertise it and be bombarded with low ball offers.

If you have $127,500 to spend and you want what may be the best GNX, this could be the one. The actual miles are under 600. It still has the New Jersey new car inspection on it. This car is absolutely like it came from the showroom.

Besides the usual items, such as the Window Sticker, jacket, and book, the seller also has the complete numbered #171 series of the Epitome Exclusives Ted Hirsch did many years ago. Besides this, he has all the original related paperwork, various posters, and all the magazines from back in the day related to the GNX project.

If this perks your interest and you got the available funds, email me - [email protected] and I can provide more specific details. There are less expensive GNXs available, but when you add up the extras and actual miles, this deal may be tough to beat.

1984-1985-1986 Buick Regal (All Models) -
and 1987 Buick Regal (All Models) -
GM Licensed - Reproduction “SPID - RPO” CODES TRUNK LABEL

We offer GM Licensed reproduction SPID-RPO Labels, made by ECS Automotive Concepts. ECS also makes the GM Licensed VIN Door Decals we offer.

If you are having the exterior restored or if your label is damaged or faded, this is the time to replace it.

We need to have a copy of an original label in order to make either label.

NOTE - GM started to use the 1987 format partially through the 1986 model year. The reproduction you order will match whichever is on your car.

The 1984-1985-1986 labels have GM part #14065987. This label will be available at a later date.

The 1987 label has GM part #14085266 and is currently available.

IMPORTANT - They can only do it if you have an existing original label that you can scan or clearly photograph and email to us - [email protected]

They can NOT create a new label from scratch.

However, at some point GM did use the 1987 format on the late production Regals in 1986. So, it is important you see what GM part number is on your trunk label in the lower right hand corner of the gray bar.

The 1984 model was the very first year GM started to use the Regular Production Order (aka RPO) SPID label. In all cases, this label was put on the inside of the trunk lid. Generally, the 1984-1985-1986 was on the left side of the trunk lid and the 1987 label was on the right side of the trunk lid.

This label lists all the codes in alphabetical order, both options and features that came in your Regal. It also has your car’s 17-digit VIN number and the paint code.

Since it is VIN related, this is a critical label for any restoration. If your car’s label is faded or torn, we can get a exact reproduction through ECS Automotive Concepts.

Currently, we can only get the 1987 SPID label - GM #14085266. They are still working on creating the format for the 1984-1985-1986 label - GM #14065987.

Canadian delivered cars had a different SPID RPO label that is not available at this time.

NOTE - Allow 5-7 days for delivery. Label is sent Priority Mail from ECS Automotive Concepts

This is another excellent replacement for any exterior restoration.

Buick Regal Trunk Label SPID RPO Codes - Buick trunk label - BACKGROUND INFO –

The Regular Production Order (aka RPO) codes can be found on the Service Parts Identification (aka SPID) label on the trunk of your Buick Regal.

Starting with the 1984 model year GM began implementing the SPID label program which entailed using an information label listing all of the options and equipment to help technicians service GM vehicles.

They not only included the RPO codes but also Buick paint and trim codes along with such information as spring and sometimes sub assembly codes.

There were several different labels used throughout the four years that the (most common & favored) Buick Turbo Regal was built.

The labels used for 1984, 1985 and partially through 1986 was a white label identified by the part #14065987 in the lower right corner of the label.

These labels also have a protective clear tape over them.

Cars built for the Canadian market utilized this same basic label but with a French language description on the lower half with the part #14065989 in the lower right corner.

Part way through 1986 and for the model year 1987 GM changed the label and it now has the part #14085266 in the lower right corner. The protective clear tape was also not used anymore.

Information on 1987 Canadian market cars is not available at this time.

By ordering a certain option on the vehicle, or ordering a special package, the codes for these options/packages generate many additional codes that are all part of that specific package. These codes are then automatically forced onto the specific build order, and also listed on the SPID label.

Here is a link to this label on our website.

We have heard from a couple people that have had problems with the links in our Inner Circle.

When we check the links, they work fine. However, if you are not able to be directed to the exact website page or internet site, you can "copy" and "paste" the link into the URL in your browser (such as Safari, Firefox, Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, etc.) If it doesn't link in one browser, it may work in another.

Most people having problems are using Internet Explorer. If you are having issues with links, try another browser to see if it works.

You may need to "UPDATE" your browser to be use you are using the current version.

NOTE ABOUT PHOTOS ON THE WEBSITE -

We have heard from a couple people that have viewed the photos on the website. Because these must be low-resolution photos to work on the Inner Circle segments on the website, any photos of text don't appear clear when enlarged. This is a problem when you are trying to see numbers, such as those on the VIN labels or pages from Options booklet. Also, because of photo reproduction and computer screen variations, the colors may not be true to the actual product or photo.

If you would like to have us email you any photo at the higher resolution for viewing, just email us and we will email them to you. Be sure to be specific on which pictures you want to see - Reference Inner Circle date and photo number 1, 2, 3 or 4 - [email protected]

ABOUT OUR EMAILS -

Any inquiries concerning used parts, you must email me direct - [email protected] - I will answer you. However, if I fail to answer you within 24 hours, please email us again. Since expanding into used parts, I get a lot of emails and sometimes I may forget your request or may not remember who requested the item.

IN CLOSING –

Every night on the news it’s the fires out west and the torrential rains out east. This has been a summer for the record books!
