EAST COAST BUICK REGIONALS UPDATE -

As you know, the East Coast Buick Regionals event is held this coming weekend at Cecil County Dragway in Cecil, Maryland. The dates are September 15th and 16th. This is a very busy weekend for us. Besides the Buick event, it’s also the same weekend as my wife’s 50th High School Reunion event and my 70th birthday. We will be set up as a vendor all day Friday at the race track. On Saturday, we will only be there until about 12 noon in order for me to drive home in time for my wife’s High School Reunion. Ironic, I missed her original graduation in 1967 as I was in Vietnam!

We will be set up as a vendor, mostly with our used parts. We will have one table set up with used parts that range from $1 to $5 each. It’s the end of the show season, so it’s your last chance to get a good deal on some of our used parts with no shipping involved.

Also, bring any cores you want to cash in for a Letter of Credit. A Letter of Credit never expires as long as we are alive and in business. We also buy Turbo Regal parts, new or used.

This event grows bigger every year, so don’t miss it. Again, remember we will be set up all day Friday, but only until noon on Saturday!

EILEEN'S 50TH HIGH SCHOOL REUNION -

As many of our long-time readers know, my 50th High School Reunion was two years ago from the same school my wife Eileen attended. Back then, it was a very small school with less than 100 students in the graduating class. With two years between us, I knew many of her classmates. I missed her high school graduation, because I was in Vietnam.

Prior to graduating a few of her talented classmates came up with a great idea for a graduation prank. Part of the school had classrooms that completely closed off a grassy courtyard in the middle of the four-sided building. The guys decided to put a car in the grassy courtyard. The problem was the widest entry way to the grassy courtyard was only through a 36 inches wide by 54 inch high access door.

To make this work they would have to cut the car apart and reassemble it in the courtyard. They contacted the local junkyard and purchased a 1959 Hillman with a blown engine for $25. The $25 was refundable if they brought the car back.

They unbolted all the doors, hood, rear and suspension. They then carefully cut the roof posts and door jambs with a hacksaw and welded round rods inside the posts to realign and hold the roof on when it was reassembled in the courtyard. They also had to remove the wheels and gas tank. This was pretty high tech for 1967!

They then cut the car in half front to back with an acetylene cutting torch. On Sunday, they loaded up all the parts, minus the engine and transmission and went through the courtyard access door into the grassy courtyard of the High School. They carefully reassembled the car and painted the words “LM Class of 67” on the side and the trunk lid. LM stood for Lower Moreland, the name of our school.

It was a terrific surprise for the students the next day, and even made the local newspaper. Some thought the car was dropped in by a helicopter, which would have been quite costly.

Looking back now, it’s a shame the car was disassembled and returned to the local junkyard.

The senior prank of 1967 caused no harm or damage, yet showed how talented a group of Eileen’s classmates were that came up with a unique idea, and was able to pull it off.

RADIATOR CAPS -

The radiator cap is one of those visible parts under the hood of every 1984-1987 Turbo Regal. Actually the same radiator cap was used on all 1984-1988 G-body applications, from what I have found. The radiator cap on the G-body cars is unique for 2 reasons. One reason is it does not have the two ears on the side to make removal easy. Second, it has embossed on the surface the words, “Made in England,” which I find unusual.

Fortunately, GM used this same radiator cap for a few later years in some of the front-wheel drive GM cars with the same pressure markings. Then GM made a very slight change. They eliminated the words “Made in England”. Same exact radiator cap, but it no longer had the words “Made in England” on the cap. All the other wording remained unchanged.

In recent years, for me it has become tougher to find these original radiator caps since the early 1990 GM cars are getting rarer in the junkyards.

At the recent Corvettes at Carlisle event, some of the original early Corvette radiator caps sold for $250 or more.

As the Turbo Regals continue to increase in value, original parts for these cars will also follow suit.

PHOTO 2 - The photo to the left shows a display I had made several years ago showing the various radiator caps I found on GM cars. The far left one is the original cap followed by the one that is similar, but does not have the phrase “Made in England.” Below that row of radiator caps I show the various radiator overflow bottle caps that GM used. Again, the one on the far left is the original, followed by the aftermarket replacement and then the later ones GM used, which appear more colorful.

Although it’s very hard to see, the photo to the right shows both the original “Made in England” radiator cap and the one that is similar minus the phrase “Made in England.” This is just one of those small detail items that you should make sure you have for your Turbo Regal. Our part number is KE003 on our website and it is a used part. Each original radiator cap has been cleaned and polished.

Here is the link to the Made in England radiator cap on our website.

GM AM/FM CASSETTE PLAYERS -

In the late 1980s and through part of the 1990s, GM made vast improvements with their factory radios. The problem is the later ones that have the proper frame on them were only made a few years. The proper frame is the critical part, so the mounting studs and side brackets can secure the radio into your 1984-1987 Turbo Regal. Adding to the issue is now these cars are getting old and hard to find in junkyards.

It is very hard to find the early GM am/fm CD players that share the same outer frame that the factory studs and brackets attach to. These GM radios are also equally difficult to find today. All these later-style GM radios require the jumper harness, which allows you to plug your harness into the later radios. These later radios are 21-pin versus the older GM radios, which are only 12-pin. Everything works as it should.

We just heard from one of our Canadian customers who bought one of our GM CD players the other week. He said the install was quite simple and everything worked perfectly in his Grand National. Actually installing a later GM radio into the 1984-1987 Regal is a lot easier than it is to remove this later GM radio from the car I get them out of.

PHOTO 3 - The photo to the left shows the later GM am/fm cassette player. The photo to the right shows the same basic later GM am/fm cassette with the rare EQ option. Both of these styles of radios are the latest GM radios that still used the frame that had the slots to attach the factory studs to for the factory brackets. These are extremely nice looking radios. See Rare Parts section for availability and prices, as we have several of both versions for sale.

FIRST TIME I HAVE EVER SEEN THIS IN A SALVAGE YARD -

This was the first time I have ever seen this in a salvage yard this past weekend, when I saw two guys leaning on the ground focusing on their smart phone. It turns out they were watching a YouTube video and the narration on how to properly remove the door panel off a GM door!

As I was walking by them I remarked, “You know, years ago we never had those special perks, you simply looked over the door panel and figured out how to remove it!”

PHOTO 4 – This photo shows the 2 guys as they listened and watched the YouTube video on how to remove a door panel. The narrator explained it step-by-step and even explained what tools to use. Technology has really come a long way!

FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL -

While most students pack books and related items for school, two kids in one of the New York schools packed weapons instead. One was arrested for bringing a pistol to school and another was caught with 2 knives. I guess reading and writing was not part of their agenda.

UPGRADED LOWER STEERING SHAFTS -

We just got in several more of these refurbished desirable lower steering shafts. If you want one of these lower steering shafts, email me direct - [email protected]

These refurbished lower steering shafts make a noticeable difference. We just got an email from a California customer who said the difference was like night and day. This shaft has metal joints at both ends, unlike the stock lower steering shaft that has a fiber-like rag joint at the steering gear end. That rag joint is now 30-plus years old.

1987 GRAND NATIONAL FOR SALE -

I am representing this 1987 Grand National hardtop for sale for the owner who resides in Florida. This car is at the top of the value chain and is, without any doubt, one of the best. It has been in the same family since it was new. The original owner bought it when he was single. Soon after, with a growing family, it became evident the Grand National was not a practical car, so he sold it to his brother who I have known for probably 20 years. His brother recently passed away and that is why the car is back down in Florida.

It has been made better than new. When I say better than new, it is mainly due to the fact it has had a very high-dollar repaint applied and everything has been freshened up.

I knew the brother that passed away quite well, since he was heavily involved with GTOs and even wrote a very detailed book on GTOs that is still sold today. He also had a GTO and was a very meticulous individual. His name was Eric White. The book he wrote years ago was titled, “GTOAA of America Pontiac GTO, GT-37 Illustrated Identification Guide.”

I will give a copy of Eric’s GTO identification book to whoever buys this pristine Grand National. Eric was very well known in the GTO world at the national level. I would see him every year at the National events during the 1990s. As a matter of fact, we discussed his new book and what he needed it to say since he was using GM logos, etc.

The Grand National is now in his brother’s hand, Kirk White, in Florida. They have every single document with this car since it was new. Plus, they even have the original Window Sticker. They also have every single repair receipt. Over $12,000 was spent on the repaint and to freshening up this car.

It still smells new! A smell that no company as of yet has ever duplicated. If they did, Corvette owners would line up to buy it!

The Grand National has almost every single option. The actual mileage is under 23,000 original miles. The car is 99% stock with the one exception being an aftermarket alarm system.

It has the stock powermaster brake system with the upgraded Cardone brake bowl. The car has used seat covers, which have protected the original seats. According to Kirk, he doesn’t believe anyone has ever sat in the back seat of this car.

This is a Kirban-quality car based in my numerous emails with Kirk and the fact I knew his brother from our mutual GTO connection for many years.

The new lowered price is $29,900. Keep in mind, receipts come with the car and the repaint totaled over $12,000. The repaint was only done because the car had such a poor paint job from the factory as many of them did.

NOTE - IF YOU ARE NOT ABLE TO SEE THE RARE PARTS SECTION -

If you are not able to see the Rare Parts section at the end of this Inner Circle, it is because you are not an Inner Circle member, but instead are reading this on the website. You must subscribe to see the Rare Parts section each week. It would go directly to your inbox every Wednesday afternoon. It is FREE, probably one reason why nobody complains about what I write about.

Simply email - [email protected] to get on our weekly Inner Circle email.

URGENT NEED FOR CORRECT STEERING WHEEL CORES -

We have an urgent need for correct 1986-1987 Turbo Regal steering wheel cores that are not bent. They can have minor rust on the spokes but cannot be pitted. If you owe us a steering wheel core, please send it in to get your core deposit back.

In order for us to continue this service, we have had to raise the core price. Without cores, owners can’t get a redone leather-wrapped steering wheel. Help us continue this needed service. We now issue a Letter of Credit for $100, if you have a correct 1986-1987 Turbo Regal steering wheel core.

EMAILS TO KIRBAN PERFORMANCE -

NOTE - If you email us and do NOT get a timely reply, be sure to check your “SPAM” folder. Some emails do not go thru.

If you need to email us, use - [email protected]

TIP FROM KIRBAN -

Never install a new alternator or a rebuilt alternator if your battery is not fully charged. Many owners will be putting their Turbo Regal away for the winter. Be sure you have it on some sort of a trickle charger. Adopt a few cats to prowl your garage, which is a cheaper investment than fixing the damage rodents can do to your Turbo Regal.

TIPS AND IDEAS YOU HAVE TRIED -

If you have a tip or a discovery that you found that works on your Turbo Regal, drop us an email giving us the details so we can pass the info on to our readers. Remember, even with my knowledge, I don’t know it all. Simply email me at - [email protected]

CUSTOMIZED BUICK TAILLIGHT LED WALL DISPLAY -
CHROME EDGE OR PLAIN

During one of my many trips to various junkyards, this idea recently came to me. It’s a cool way to offer an actual original Buick part that you can personalize in the section for a license plate.

Some of you probably save you old license plates or mementos from a previous car. Now you can mount your old license plate or logo plate in this unique wall display. Better yet, you can insert a picture of you and your pride and joy in that space (see photos.) The ideas are endless.

We purchase original taillight assemblies from used Buick Regal or Century models. Both taillight assemblies are vintage early 2000 models. These are not easy to find in perfect condition.

Each taillight assembly is pre-wired with 6 LED bulbs and a 9-volt battery with a switch. Hanging hardware is attached and the display comes ready to hang on the wall. You can light it up in your garage or work shop.

Each taillight assembly has been polished and cleaned. Display piece measures approximately 38" wide and weighs about 5 lbs.

We offer two versions. The version with the chrome edge (#KE-018) is from a Buick Century model. The plain version shown without the chrome edge (#KE-019) is from a Buick Regal.

NOTE- Some assemblies may have the Regal model or Century emblem still on the surface. It can easily be removed, since it is merely stuck on.

Our photos show both versions and 4 different ideas on what to put in the section where the license plate would normally go.

Here is a unique way to have something that you can personalize to your liking, and know that it is not something that has been mass produced since it is made from an original Buick part.
The top photo shows the wall display lit. The lower photos show ideas on how the license plate area can be personalized with a license plate or photo.

Our second photo shows the wall displays without any insert.

NOTE - You may also be interested in this related item - #KE-016 Custom-made Buick Turbo Regal Valve Cover Desk Lamp.

NOTE - ABOUT LINKS IN THE INNER CIRCLE -

We have heard from a couple people that have had problems with the links in our Inner Circle.

When we check the links, they work fine. However, if you are not able to be directed to the exact website page or internet site, you can "copy" and "paste" the link into the URL in your browser (such as Safari, Firefox, Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, etc.) If it doesn't link in one browser, it may work in another.

Most people having problems are using Internet Explorer. If you are having issues with links, try another browser to see if it works.

You may need to "UPDATE" your browser to be use you are using the current version.

NOTE ABOUT PHOTOS ON THE WEBSITE -

We have heard from a couple people that have viewed the photos on the website. Because these must be low-resolution photos to work on the Inner Circle segments on the website, any photos of text don't appear clear when enlarged. This is a problem when you are trying to see numbers, such as those on the VIN labels or pages from Options booklet. Also, because of photo reproduction and computer screen variations, the colors may not be true to the actual product or photo.

If you would like to have us email you any photo at the higher resolution for viewing, just email us and we will email them to you. Be sure to be specific on which pictures you want to see - Reference Inner Circle date and photo number 1, 2, 3 or 4 - [email protected]

ABOUT OUR EMAILS -

Any inquiries concerning used parts, you must email me direct - [email protected] - I will answer you. However, if I fail to answer you within 24 hours, please email us again. Since expanding into used parts, I get a lot of emails and sometimes I may forget your request or may not remember who requested the item.

IN CLOSING -

Hope to see many of our eastern coast customers this weekend at the East Coast Buick Regionals. Remember, it’s an excellent time to trade in your cores and avoid shipping costs.
