Greetings Turbo Regal Inner Circle Members 10-18-2017 -

GOOD NEWS ON TWO CRITICAL TURBO REGAL PARTS -

First, the power antenna replacement plastic cable we have been selling has now been upgraded. Our source that rebuilds the original power antennas for us has figured out how to replace the plastic cable in the replacement masts with his steel plastic-coated cable. He also has to make a new J-hook at the one end since the original J-hook can’t be saved.

He then test fits each cable in a power antenna housing to eliminate any fitment issues. As you can expect, this adds more costs to the power antenna replacement mast.

I am now dealing with two companies in two different states in order to offer a superior product. Our part number remains unchanged, #7433. The new price is $69.95. We have some being built for us. Because of the headaches of replacing your power antenna, it is better to replace it with a steel cable since it will far outlast any plastic cable!

Since this replacement power antenna mast fits virtually every GM car 1979-1987, we will be offering this to other suppliers as well.

Here is a link to this power antenna upgraded steel cable repair kit, part #7433, on our website.

I love a challenge, and when the idea works, it’s even better! This reminds me when we introduced the metal horn ring many years ago. This metal horn ring a superior product over the GM plastic horn ring that warps and cracks in a matter of a few years.

The second bit of news concerns the 1986-1987 Turbo Regal original mass air flow sensors. To my knowledge, the only source that rebuilds them is Cardone, who we deal with on a direct level. We discontinued these months ago because we had so many issues with getting them rebuilt properly.

I contacted my suit-and-tie guy at Cardone, who then placed a call direct to the engineer at the plant in Texas where Cardone rebuilds them. They assured me that the issues have been corrected.

We should now have some Rebuilt Original AC DELCO Mass Air Flow Sensors, #7045, in stock. These do carry a 3-month warranty and the price is $195. Here is a link to this sensor on our website.

If you want to keep your 1986-1987 Turbo Regal original, replace it with the Cardone rebuilt mass air flow sensor appears to be the only game in town.

Once again, we will be accepting good used cores that are correct and not cracked. We will issue a Letter of Credit of $40 for each acceptable core.

As each year passes, long-time customers can clearly see how tough it is finding correct original parts for our cars. Our cars are now basically antiques, like some of the owners!

MINI CONTEST -

This mini contest is open to all my readers, except for those connected to the Turbo Regal business. Also, the last contest winner is not eligible.

The first correct 3-part answer we receive as an email will be declared the winner. Only answers submitted directly to my email [email protected] are eligible.

The correct answer requires 3 parts. You need to name the correct year, the GM car make, and the GM car model. All three parts must be in the same single email. You get one shot at this per reader.

PHOTO 1 - Shows a factory original GM am/fm push-button radio from the early 1980s. It is very compact in size. It actually measures 4-½ inches by 7 inches by 1-½ tall. The original plate is still attached as the radio appeared in the dash. I pulled this out of a car in a junkyard last week.

Here is a clue: It is from a GM car in the early 1980s.

Based on past contests, it’s best to submit your answer in the first 72 hours, if you expect to win. The winner gets a flip-down stay-down license plate bracket a ($25 value) plus one of our “Ten Top Reasons I own A Buick Grand National” T-shirts in the size of your choice ($15.95 value.) Remember, your answer requires all 3 parts to be correct to win. The first one who gets all 3 parts to be correct is our winner.

Good luck to all participants!

COLLISON ESTMATING GUIDE DOMESTIC GENERAL MOTORS -

Way back before the internet, there was a company called Mitchell International that published various “Mitchell Collision Estimating Guide Domestic General Motors” guide books for body shops. They were published several times a year to keep up with all the new cars, both foreign and domestic.

It was a quick way to pinpoint the part numbers for the parts needed for collision repairs and the time allotted to refinish various parts. The books also provided the VIN breakdown and where to locate the paint code for whatever vehicle you were working on.

Generally, these got thrown out when they were outdated and new ones were published. Since I am not an expert in this field, I have no idea how many different versions they printed each time since I only have the one shown for October 1987 for the GM cars.

See the Rare Parts section as this book is listed for sale.

PHOTO 2 - The photo to the left shows the cover of the Mitchell Collision Estimating Guide Domestic General Motors. It is dated October 1987 Volume 29 Number 14. This covers all the Turbo Regals 1984-1987 years. The photo to the right shows one of the main pages for the Turbo Regal. I am not sure if it’s visible but it does show various parts of the engine and the part numbers. You can also see at a quick glance the actual price of the parts back then. For example, the header panel was just $209! Black headlight bezels, a mere $27.25 each! For just $190 you could buy a brand new aluminum front bumper support! The steel one was $131.

GMP 1:24 SCALE 1987 BUICK GRAND NATIONAL -

This GMP 1:24 scale model was one of the first diecast models done of the Grand National years ago. It remains one of the most detailed. It even has removable floor mats that come in the trunk, which opens. The doors and hood also open. All that is missing to make it more realistic is an oil spot on the ground! It is brand new in the box.

PHOTO 3 - Shows the inner box, booklet, floor mats, and the diecast 1987 Grand National. See the Rare Parts section as it is listed for sale. It is one of 3750 made. It does come with the outer plain white box that is not shown in Photo 3.

1949 CADILLAC LIMO -

You’re probably wondering what is the connection with a 1949 Cadillac Limo and Turbo Regals. I am always amazed when I hear from someone who has a powermaster brake system in a non-Turbo Regal. This is one such example. What many young readers may not realize, many of the older cars from the 1950s and back had the brake pedal mounted to the floor instead of a swivel format where the rod went through the firewall.

What some custom builders strive to achieve is to keep the firewall clean in a resto-mod project. In some cases, a vacuum system simply does not fit under the car frame without hanging too low under the car. The powermaster unit seems to be the answer as builders split the powermaster system mounting the motor alongside the main unit.

According to the owner of this 1949 Cadillac Limo, he has had it for 56 years. It is one of just 248 built in 1949. Powered now by a late-model LS2 engine, he uses a powermaster brake unit to do the stopping. He has several buddies that use the same powermaster brake system under the floor as well.

The amount of engineering by car builders in the USA never ceases to amaze me.

PHOTO 4 - Shows a few photos of this really cool-looking 1949 Cadillac Limo. One could say this Cadillac has the popular Buick Designer Series paint scheme. This would be cool to use for weddings.

BREAKING NEWS - COLLECTOR SELLING HIS COLLECTION DUE TO HEALTH ISSUES -

An old-time customer of mine (who I bought a Divco milk truck from years ago) is selling off his car collection and parts. I should have more info and photos soon for those that are interested. They are Pontiac cars. If you are interested, email me - [email protected]

MORE GOOD NEWS -

As you read this we will have more of the aluminum 1986-1987 Turbo Regal radiators in stock part #7457.

Here is a link to the radiator on our website.

We also expect to have some of our popular adjustable billet fuel regulators in stock at the end of this current week, part #6547.

Here is a link to our regulator on our website.

TURBO REGAL ODDS AND ENDS -

We often get phone calls for some of those small incidental parts that customers need for a Turbo Regal. The problem is, the part may only be worth about $5, but the shipping makes it cost more than twice as much.

Since I go to various junkyards on the weekends, I have been gathering up some of these odds and ends.

To make it cost effective, I have put several Package Deals together under Rare Parts in this issue. This way you get several items. Some of the items you may not need, but it’s worth having extra items as spares.

KIRBAN PERFORMANCE FACEBOOK PAGE -

Being a slow computer learner, I just recently began to personally post news on our Kirban Performance Facebook account. We have already picked up some new Buick enthusiasts to our weekly Inner Circle. I use the Inner Circle to connect with our customer base on a regular mid-week basis.

Facebook provides another avenue to make others aware of what we are doing.

MUSCLE CAR AND CORVETTE NATIONALS 2017 - BUICKS NEEDED -

To complete the Buick portion of the display, they are looking for a clean original GNX as well as an example of a rare optioned T-Type, Turbo T or Limited.

GOOD NEWS - WE ARE ACCEPTING CLASSIFIED ADS -

Good news - We now accept Classified Ads in our weekly Inner Circle emails. Over the years several customers have asked about placing an ad in our weekly Inner Circle.

Here are the options and the costs.

Ads can be from any individual or company. It needs to be automotive related, meaning it does not need be specifically Turbo Regal related.

Maximum number of words is 125 words, which is about 7 to 9 lines of copy. No photos. You can list a website. We recommend you state your name, phone number or email, a price, and your location in your ad.

The cost for 2 consecutive weeks is $25. The cost for 4 consecutive weeks is $40. You save $10 with the 4-week plan. No changes can be made to your existing running ad. You can only run one ad at any given time. We will have a code system at the end of your ad, so we will know what week number your ad is to run - 2 or 4 weeks.

It can be an ad for something for sale or an ad for something you are looking for.

We have never missed a single week since we started the Inner Circle email format in 2009. It’s something I enjoy doing and I just always seem to have enough material to write about.

Our weekly Inner Circle reaches over 3,200 members every Wednesday direct to their inbox. The Inner Circle also appears every Wednesday on our website with the related photos. Your ad would be visible to both groups of readers. So, the exposure to your ad is well over 3,200 potential buyers.

UPDATE ON THE VERY LAST GRAND NATIONAL -

As the last Grand National was being built, Bob Colvin was afforded the unique opportunity to film the assembly of this special car. GM film crew also filmed it. This combination film has been converted to a 2-hour DVD, available direct from Bob Colvin. The price is just $20. You can email him at [email protected] or call him at 318-455-6073 to order.

He sent me a copy and it is well worth the money. It is really interesting how the body is put on the frame. It was also interesting to see how they used a pattern that was hung off the fender in order to position the fender emblems correctly. This way the emblem was positioned the same on both sides of the car. It was neat seeing the car frame come down the assembly line with the powermaster brake system bolted up to the brake lines with no body on the frame. It looked like the powermaster unit just hanging out in midair.

I serious doubt GM would let any car owner film the production of any GM vehicle in any of their plants today! I know years ago when Pete Serio and I got a personal tour of the 3800 engine plant in Flint, we were not permitted to take any photos.

1987 GRAND NATIONAL FOR SALE -

I am representing this 1987 Grand National hardtop for sale for the owner who resides in Florida. This car is at the top of the value chain and is, without any doubt, one of the best. It has been in the same family since it was new. The original owner bought it when he was single. Soon after, with a growing family, it became evident the Grand National was not a practical car, so he sold it to his brother who I have known for probably 20 years. His brother recently passed away and that is why the car is back down in Florida.

It has been made better than new. When I say better than new, it is mainly due to the fact it has had a very high-dollar repaint applied and everything has been freshened up.

I knew the brother that passed away quite well, since he was heavily involved with GTOs and even wrote a very detailed book on GTOs that is still sold today. He also had a GTO and was a very meticulous individual. His name was Eric White. The book he wrote years ago was titled, “GTOAA of America Pontiac GTO, GT-37 Illustrated Identification Guide.”

I will give a copy of Eric’s GTO identification book to whoever buys this pristine Grand National. Eric was very well known in the GTO world at the national level. I would see him every year at the National events during the 1990s. As a matter of fact, we discussed his new book and what he needed it to say since he was using GM logos, etc.

The Grand National is now in his brother’s hand, Kirk White, in Florida. They have every single document with this car since it was new. Plus, they even have the original Window Sticker. They also have every single repair receipt. Over $12,000 was spent on the repaint and to freshening up this car.

It still smells new! A smell that no company as of yet has ever duplicated. If they did, Corvette owners would line up to buy it!

The Grand National has almost every single option. The actual mileage is less than 23,000 original miles. The car is 99% stock with the one exception being an aftermarket alarm system.

It has the stock powermaster brake system with the upgraded Cardone brake bowl. The car has used seat covers, which have protected the original seats. According to Kirk, he doesn’t believe anyone has ever sat in the back seat of this car.

This is a Kirban-quality car based in my numerous emails with Kirk and the fact I knew his brother from our mutual GTO connection for many years.

The new lowered price is $29,900. Keep in mind, receipts come with the car and the repaint totaled over $12,000. The repaint was only done because the car had such a poor paint job from the factory as many of them did.

TIP FROM KIRBAN -

Last week we touched on the fact of how important it is to use correct length spark plug wires in order to avoid any issues with the wires getting burnt on the headers or wear against the plenum.

It’s also important to always use some dielectric grease to prevent corrosion and so the boot ends don’t become stuck on to the spark plugs. Larry, out in California, recently reminded me of this.

NEW PRODUCTS FROM US -

1984-1987 Buick Turbo Regal -
POWER ANTENNA UPGRADED STEEL CABLE REPAIR KIT

This is a brand new, improved, upgraded power antenna steel cable reproduction repair kit.

The plastic cable has been replaced with a steel cable. The end result is a superior cable that is not prone to break.

It will only work if the metal antenna mast is not damaged and the motor will not shut off unless it’s unplugged. If the motor works but the antenna mast does not go up and down, and the mast is not bent in any way, it means the internal plastic cable is broken or damaged due to age. Replacing it with this improved steel cable will solve the problem.

This is a new reproduction repair kit installing a steel (not plastic) internal cable, complete with installation directions. This kit is ONLY the internal cable. Your entire mast assembly MUST be intact and NOT bent. Your power antenna motor MUST still be in good working order for the power antenna to work once you install this new reproduction internal steel cable.

NOTE - We recommend you also purchase our Part #6976 - “1984-1987 Turbo Regal - Power Antenna Removal and Installation Guide” Book by Pete Serio

NOTE - Remember this is ONLY the internal steel cable to replace the plastic cable. The external metal mast and the power antenna motor on your car MUST be in good working order.

REBUILT ORIGINAL AC DELCO MASS AIR FLOW SENSOR

We are one of the very few sources to offer completely rebuilt original AC Delco mass air flow sensors for the 1986-1987 Turbo Regals.

New mass air flow sensors have been discontinued from AC Delco for several years.

Other available rebuilt units are rebuilt using late-model Camaro mass air flow sensors, not rebuilt from original 1986-1987 Turbo Regal cores like these.

When comparing ours to the various reproductions, it’s important to note that the original one has the “AC Delco” logo embossed on the top cover, which is visible on the car. Others may not have that feature. We have highlighted the embossed logo area with a red arrow in our first photo.

Ours are 100% correct mass air flow sensors with the proper plug, which came on the car originally.

Original parts will always be the top choice over any reproduction, especially for those wanting to keep their car original.

Sensor has the harness plug in the proper location and comes with a manufacturer’s 90-day Warranty.

NOTE - Supplies are limited, so call for availability - 215-766-1611 x 0.

7045 - 1986-1987 Buick Turbo Regal -
Rebuilt Original AC DELCO Mass Air Flow Sensor - $195.

NOTE - If you send us your non-working original AC Delco mass air flow sensor(s) you will receive a Letter of Credit for $40 for each sensor. Unit must be an original AC Delco sensor. We depend on cores to continue to offer these rebuilt units.

1984-1987 Buick Turbo Regal -
Reproduction BLACK PLASTIC POWER ANTENNA BEZEL

This bezel will fit 1984-1987 Grand Nationals or Turbo Regals with the factory black bezel for the power antenna.

This is a reproduction of the black plastic bezel that sits at the base of the power antenna mast on the outside of the fender. Over a period of time this bezel can crack or fade.

If you have to replace the power antenna, we recommend you replace the black bezel at the same time. This part is unique to this application only.

This new reproduction bezel is made in ABS plastic with increased UV protection over the originals for a longer life. This ensures the part from dulling and cracking like the originals over a longer period of time.

Another nice finishing touch for any exterior restoration.

NOTE ABOUT PHOTOS ON THE WEBSITE -

We have heard from a couple people that have viewed the photos on the website. Because these must be low-resolution photos to work on the Inner Circle segments on the website, any photos of text don't appear clear when enlarged.
