GRAND NATIONAL PALLEX SEAT MATERIAL UPDATE -

As I write this, I did make a deal, and have purchased the original grey pallex material that is correct for all the 1986-1987 Grand Nationals. It is also the correct grey material for the upper door panels in the Grand Nationals. Like the driver’s seat, the upper door panels suffer wear issues over time and also damage from sunlight.

Grey is one of those colors that fades quickly in bright sunlight. To a lesser degree, if the owner smoked in the car, it may have burn marks. Those cigarette ashes sometimes never made it out the window and may have left burn holes in the upper door panels.

NOTE - See Rare Parts section if you want any of this original grey pallex material.

HISTORY OF C & A -

C & A, which stands for Collins and Aikman, is a name you may not be familiar with. I first learned of this name over a dozen years ago when I purchased an original set of Grand National seat covers in a plain brown box. This company’s name was on the box. Headquartered in Michigan, they had about 120 facilities at one time employing 25,000 people.

One of their main products was automotive interior components. They produced the Grand National seats and other interior parts. According to an article on the internet, at one time they manufactured components for approximately 90% of all light vehicle production platforms. In other words, they were a major player. They started their business in 1891. Obviously before 1900 automobiles were not a huge market, so I assume they must have done buggy seats or train seats?

On May 17, 2005 they entered Chapter 11 bankruptcy, and closed their doors on October 12th 2007. With that being said and if they were the only producer of Pallex seat material, that would explain why it is difficult to find today.

PHOTO 1 - The photo on the left shows the used top portion of a factory door panel cloth from a Turbo Regal that had a grey interior. This would be from a WE4 or a Turbo-T with a grey interior. This material is not the same as the grey Pallex material used in the Grand Nationals. I have saved this for many years to keep as a pattern.

You can probably clearly see where the two plastic trim moldings were as that area the material is darker than the rest. You can also see it was the passenger door panel material with a single small cut out square for the window switch. It may not be visible, but the entire top edge, where it would curl over to the door glass, is also badly faded from the sunlight. The photo on the right is a close up of the back of this used material. You may be able to read the letters “C&A.” This stands for Collins & Aikman. It also is stamped “1986” which would be the year it was produced. I hope my source can find some of this grey material as well. I think this would be the second most in demand material for the Turbo Regals.

MAKING 600 PLUS HORSEPOWER IN A SNOWMOBILE -

Our son Darrell recently did some custom gauge work on a Ski Doo 1200 that has been highly modified to produce 600 plus horsepower. That seems a tad bit extreme to me to package into a snowmobile that maybe tops the scale at 1,000 pounds.

Not all snow on the ground is soft. I found this out many years ago in the towing business. I remember picking up a Monte Carlo that was sandwiched between two piles of snow. I thought the weight of the car would simply push the snow bank out of the way. Instead it caved in the entire length of the one door. Needless to say, I lost money on that trip!

PHOTO 2 - We show several photos of the engine in this snowmobile. The turbo is tucked up in the top right front corner. You can clearly see how all the piping is mandrell bent and very tightly arched!

PONTIAC GTOS AND BUICK GRAND NATIONALS UPDATE -

Last week we compared the Grand National and GNX to the Pontiac GTO and the GTO Judge. We mentioned that one of the 1970 GTO Judges we owned was featured on a poster. At the time I had forgotten that this 1970 GTO Judge that we sold also appeared in Volume 21 of the Automobile Quarterly, dated 1983.

PHOTO 3 - Shows the two-page spread in Automobile Quarterly of the green 1970 Ram Air III GTO Judge that I had just sold to the new local owner. The photo was taken in the fall, as you can clearly see the leaves on the roadway. The red barn building in the background still exists today and was about a half mile from our old house. At the same time the photographer took this photo, he also took photos of our 1967 Ram Air Firebird, which also appeared on a Firebird poster under my name. The photos were taken in the late afternoon, so the conditions were perfect. I remember the event specifically because a nearby neighbor was upset that we were shooting photos on the street in front of his house. He even threatened to call the cops! He said we were blocking the road! Even after I explained to him what we were doing, he was still annoyed. Fortunately, the cops never came and the photographer got the photos he needed.

The last I heard, the Judge was sold to someone in California in the early 1990s.

Unfortunately, I never recorded the VIN numbers of all the GTOs I sold.

TURBO REGAL WIPER ARMS -

According to my sources, currently only one wiper arm is still available from GM. The 1984-1987 Turbo Regals have two different wiper arms. If you have a Grand National or a Turbo Regal with the black-out package option, the wiper arms are black. These black wiper arms quickly fade due to sun exposure.

PHOTO 4 - Shows a set of original wiper arms that we had powder-coated glossy black. (See the Rare Parts section for availability and pricing.

THE CALENDAR SAYS FALL -

The calendar says Fall but the daily temperatures in my area have been in the mid-80s every day this week! So I can't retire the lawn mower for the season just yet!

I FIND IT HARD TO BELIEVE -

We all probably have seen the GM commercial talking about the benefits of GM’s steel truck beds versus Fords light-weight aluminum truck beds. I am skeptical on the test they conducted. They dropped a metal tool box on a Chevrolet truck bed, which suffers only a dent. Then they drop it on the Ford aluminum truck bed and it sustains a huge hole in the bed of the truck.

First, metal tool boxes are not that popular anymore. Most are plastic or cloth. I would also wonder what was in that metal tool box, an anvil? What height did they drop it? They also had to angle it perfectly to puncture the bed of the Ford truck. How many takes did it take for the metal tool box to punch the hole in the Ford bed?

Don’t get me wrong, I am not trying to promote Ford over Chevrolet/GMC as I have had mostly GM trucks. I’ve bought both truck models and used them in our towing business and in trailering the Turbo Regals over the years. Regardless of what truck you buy, in most cases your first purchase is going to be a bed liner, which would eliminate any severe damage to the bed of the truck!

My last question is, what do they do with the Ford truck? Does it end up getting sold as a used demo? At least the bed on the Ford won’t rust around the hole!

TIPS AND IDEAS YOU HAVE TRIED -

If you have a tip or a discovery that you found that works on your Turbo Regal, drop us an email giving us the details so we can pass the info on to our readers. Remember, even with my knowledge, I don’t know it all. Simply email me at - [email protected]

TIP FROM KIRBAN -

If you have a Window Sticker reproduced by any other company than ECS Automotive Concepts, it is not correct. ECS Automotive Concepts has spent the time and money to make the 1986 and 1987 Turbo Regal Window Stickers correct. It’s critical you supply us with a copy of the dealer invoice and the SPID label. These are the main items we need. We have already received several compliments from customers that had their Window Stickers done from ECS.

NEW PRODUCTS FROM US -

1982-1987 Buick Regal (Including Turbo Regal) -
REPRODUCTION WINDSHIELD WASHER BOTTLE

Because of the age of these cars, the original windshield washer bottle has probably turned yellow or is dirty.

Now you can make the engine compartment look new by replacing it with a reproduction windshield washer bottle.

First photo shows this bottle, and second photo shows it under the hood.

If you are replacing this bottle, it’s the perfect time to replace the old bottle with a new GM radiator overflow bottle, part #7600.

Our lower photo shows both bottles under the hood.
NOTE - This washer bottle does NOT come with the cap. The Reproduction Windshield Washer Cap, part #7632, can be purchased separately.

1986-1987 Buick Turbo Regal -
REPLACEMENT BOOST LINE VACUUM T

The wastegate solenoid, turbocharger and wastegate actuator are connected by three vacuum hoses and a grey plastic “Y” fitting.

This replacement Y connector is similar in size with the correct orifice in the one outlet which match the original vacuum T. When you install this new Y, you will need to insert the same hose into the metal orifice opening as the original T.

Inside the one side of the connector “Y” fitting there is a metal orifice, which allows only a small amount of vacuum to pass through. If the “Y” or surrounding vacuum hoses are damaged or cracked, you can have an overboost condition.

You should also check the three hoses for possible cracks due to heat or swelling at the ends. This could cause engine damage from leaning out the air/fuel mixture.

1984-1987 Buick Regal (All Models including Turbo Regals) -
Reproduction T-TOPS WEATHERSTRIP SEALS (4) SET

GM discontinued all the factory 1984-1987 Regals T-Tops weatherstripping several years ago. After much research and trial fitting, we now buy from a source that actually was a GM supplier.

We offer the seals as a kit of 4 pieces - 2 main surround seals and 2 anti-rattle strips.

Kit includes the two main body seals that surround the T-Tops openings. These run from the front pillar post around the entire T-Tops opening frame, and down the back side of the door jamb area. These would be the larger seals in the kit.

The other 2 seals are called the “anti-rattle” weatherstrips. These attach to the actual metal frame area, so when you place the T-Tops in position, it helps to make them seat snug and helps to prevent the T-Tops from rattling. You need to adjust the T-Tops so they are snug.

To further restore the car, we also highly recommend you install the Rear Seat Frame Brace Kit, Part #1586 or Part #7169, unless you have already done so. These help retain body stiffness.

Actual T-Tops can also be adjusted as needed, so they latch securely once you have all the new weatherstrip seals properly installed.

This kit is actually less expensive than the GM’s price when it was still available.

These T-Top seals come from a different supplier than the other seals we offer. The fitment is very good.
NOTE - This kit does NOT include the actual seals for the lift-off T-Tops panels. If you need the seals for the actual T-Tops panels, you would need to purchase #7375 kit, which includes all 6 seals.

NOTE - You may also be interested in these related parts - #7375 Reproduction T-Tops Weatherstrip Seals (6) Kit, #7211 T-Tops Reproduction Anti-Rattle Weatherstrip Seals (2), #1586 Powder-coated Black Rear Seat Frame Brace Kit®, #7169 Reproduction GNX Rear Seat Brace Kit, and #7171 Reproduction T-Tops Locking-style Plastic Outer Trim Rails (2) and Hardware.

These are excellent replacement parts for any restoration.

1986 and 1987 Buick Turbo Regal -
GM Licensed - Custom-Made REPRODUCTION WINDOW STICKERS

The most important piece of paper you can have with your car is the original Window Sticker, which gives all the important "history" of your Buick. It is also something that most buyers want when they purchase an original car.

This Window Sticker would show the MSRP (Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price,) all standard equipment, all optional equipment and their prices, destination and delivery charges, federal, state, and local taxes, and prep charges. It may also show the average fuel economy. This allows a consumer to walk into an automobile dealership and find an itemized, accurate price tag on every new vehicle.

If your Window Sticker is missing or damaged, we can have a GM licensed reproduction made specifically for your vehicle by ECS Automotive Concepts.

NOTE - We are only offering 1986 and 1987 Window Stickers at this time.

NOTE - ABOUT LINKS IN THE INNER CIRCLE -

We have heard from a couple people that have had problems with the links in our Inner Circle.

When we check the links, they work fine. However, if you are not able to be directed to the exact website page or internet site, you can "copy" and "paste" the link into the URL in your browser (such as Safari, Firefox, Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, etc.) If it doesn't link in one browser, it may work in another.

Most people having problems are using Internet Explorer… If you are having issues with links, try another browser to see if it works.

You may need to "UPDATE" your browser to be use you are using the current version.

NOTE ABOUT PHOTOS ON THE WEBSITE -

We have heard from a couple people that have viewed the photos on the website. Because these have to be low-resolution photos to work on the Inner Circle segments on the website, any photos of text don't appear clear when enlarged. This is a problem when you are trying to see numbers, such as those on the VIN labels or pages from Options booklet. Also, because of photo reproduction and computer screen variations, the colors may not be true to the actual product or photo.

If you would like to have us email you any photo at the higher resolution for viewing, just email us and we will email them to you. Be sure to be specific on which pictures you want to see - Reference Inner Circle date and photo number 1, 2, 3 or 4 - [email protected]

ABOUT OUR EMAILS -

Any inquiries concerning used parts, you must email me direct - [email protected] - I will answer you. However, if I fail to answer you within 24 hours, please email us again. Since expanding into used parts, I get a lot of emails and sometimes I may forget your request or may not remember who requested the item.

IN CLOSING -

We should have word on several additional new items shortly. We also struck a deal for a bunch of rare items from a collector who sold his GNX. Watch for these parts possibly in next week’s Inner Circle. One of the advantages to being in business for over 30 years is that you create a lot of friendships and connections.

Remember, unless you have owned your Turbo Regal for 23 years or longer, email me the last six digits of your VIN number. We may have sold it at some point in the last 23 years and have documented proof that would be of interest to you! Every week we are matching up current owners with paperwork from our files. You may own one of our cars and not even know it! My email is - [email protected]
