10-28-2020 Inner Circle

Greetings Turbo Regal Inner Circle Members 10-28-2020 -

COMING NEXT WEEK OUR HALLOWEEN/FALL M & M CONTEST -

We got a unique one next week with several unusual prizes for the lst place winner.

NEW PRODUCT OWNERS MANUAL HOLDER -

We just had these made. This is a black vinyl owners manual imprinted with the catchphrase we came up with years ago “A Boost of Buick Performance” The imprint is printed in silver. The front flap has two small clear pockets for 2 business cards. The overall size is 6 ¾ by 10 inches which is big enough to hold all the factory glove box booklets that Buick put in each Turbo Regal. The owner's manual is an unusual size.

Buick as you probably know back then did not go to any great expense to make an attractive holder for the glove box documents. Zip bags from any local Dollar store would have been an improvement. Buick missed the boat by not making a few neat accessories back then for the purchaser of what was noted as the quickest accelerating US made car the Buick Grand National.

They really dropped the ball by not offering optional embroidered floor mats, a cool looking horn center instead of a barely visible tri-shield, and a clear plastic bag for the documents in the glove box. In a few short years after 1987 all that changed as they did vinyl manual holders for documents. These are in stock. They may not be on our website yet. The Part number is #7918. The price is just $14.95. You can finally put them all in a nice vinyl holder.

On a side note it would have been nice had Buick had a chapter in the owner's manual about the importance of powermaster brake maintenance and maybe a small prayer at the end of the chapter!

PHOTO 1 - We show our new black vinyl owners manual holder. It is big enough to hold all the booklets with no problem. We also show a set of the basic documents that would have originally come in the glove box of any 1986-1987 Turbo Regal. In our 350 page book on pages 163 and 164 we show the basic documents that Buick put in the clear plastic bag in the glove box. In some cases we have found a few other small booklets that Buick may have included.

ORIGINAL GM GLOVE BOX MANUAL HOLDERS -

It wasn’t until a few years later AROUND 1989 or so that Buick and all the other GM car lines started to make vinyl manual holders for the documents in the glove box. The time frame is my estimation. GM kept it simple; they made all the owner manuals all the same basic size. For the Cadillac and the Corvette those manual holders were a bit more upgrade looking.

It is interesting that Buick basically did the manual holders in two colors, either blue or black vinyl with the logo and in some cases a tag line under it. Pontiac also did them in two different colors either in light grey or black with just the Pontiac name embossed on the front lower right corner. Oldsmobile went with a dark red burgundy color with the word Oldsmobile embossed on the front. Chevrolet went with a black vinyl holder with a very small barely visible embossed bow tie emblem in the bottom right corner. This was the basic format for much of the 1990s for GM manual holders.

Cadillac used a variety of different ones. Most of the Cadillac manual holders had a small logo tablet inside and a pen that had the Cadillac emblem on it. These had a richer feel to it. Unfortunately, I do not have any Corvette ones to comment on, but I am fairly confident they were nicer than any of the ones I present here.

Keep in mind I have no exact time frame when each GM car line switched over to the vinyl glove box manual holders. I removed all these manual holders pictured ones from late 1980s and early 1990s GM cars for the sake of the photos and comparisons.

PHOTO 2 - In the top left photo we show both versions of the vinyl Buick manual holder in blue and black. There could be other variations of them, but they were the basic two colors Buick used. In the top right photo we show both versions of the vinyl Pontiac manual holder in light grey and black. It appears they are the only two GM car lines that used two different color manual holders in the early 1990s. In the bottom left photo we show the Chevrolet vinyl manual holder and the Oldsmobile vinyl owners manual holder. In the bottom right photo we show the Cadillac owner manual holder that appears to be made in leather and is secured by a metal snap.

MORE NEW PRODUCTS -

I had Cardone find a total of 10 original wiper motor cores for the 1984-1987 Turbo Regals. I bought all 10 that they are rebuilding for us. These are quite scarce. There is no core charge with these so I am probably thinking Cardone will discontinue them from their parts. I am not sure if they will be on our website since only 10 are available. Like the recent power steering pumps I think these will also sell out quickly. You must call our office 215-766-1611 or email christina@kirbanperformance. Com. The price is $99.95 each. The part number is 7468. While you may never drive your Turbo regal in the rain, most state laws require your car to have working wipers! See the next photo. You will need to reinstall your intermittent wiper option and washer pump assembly. We used to sell these same ones several years ago.

1986-1987 TURBO REGAL SILVER CAD ALTERNATOR FANS AND CORRECT PULLEY -

According to my local source that builds all our alternators all the suppliers are now switching over to the gold cad fan and matching gold cad pulleys. Rebuilders also can get them in grey. This also holds true to new ones that auto stores sell. That is what many of the alternators you see being offered have a gold cad fan and pulley on them. These companies are inthe replacement business not catering to the restoration business. The problem is the alternator is such a major visual part under the hood buyers want the correct looking alternators.

Fortunately I deal with a company near me that has done my chrome plating for over 30 years and has the equipment to do the silver cad plating. We now can offer a silver cad fan with lock washer and nut. With it we include the proper diameter pulley. This kit is also pictured in the next photo. The part number for this 4-piece kit is #7924. The price is $38.95.

This reminds me of the issues I had over 40 years ago when I was getting tri-power GTO carburetors rebuilt. Originally, they had a gold like finish. I forget what that coating was called. I had to find a place that would also do that same finish. It is this attention to detail that makes a difference. We plan to approach many of the companies offering our alternators both for the G body cars and the older GM cars. It is tough to beat what we can offer. All built and tested by one individual close to original GM appearance, and a 2-year warranty.

PHOTO 3 - The photo on the left shows a rebuilt 1984-1987 Turbo Regal wiper motor. Remember to contact our office to reserve one of the ten we will be getting. The photo on the right shows the 4-part kit of the silver cad alternator fan, with the correct lock washer, and nut. Also the correct diameter pulley. This will be on our website shortly. If not you can simply contact our office as we do have few already in stock. Part #7924. The price is $38.95.

THE JEEP MODIFIED LOWER STEERING SHAFT -

As a Turbo Regal owner you know the benefit of going with one of these Jeep lower steering shafts. They have the metal swivel joints at both ends which eliminates that old spongy rag joint at the steering box end. This past week I got an email from a person in Michigan requesting one of these shafts. He says he has a Checker Cab. The Checker cabs used a GM steering shaft.

I was more than just curious about his request. Turns out this individual owns several Checker cabs including one of the ultra rare ones. He bought it out of California about 8 years ago. In 1976 they only built 60 and in 1977 they only built 47 of them. Only 4 of the 1977 models still exist. He owns one of the 4!

It seats 12 people and has 3 more jump seats. It was originally white and used by a Community Center. He had it repainted tuxedo black a Lincoln color with metal flake. To come up with 12 correct seats he had to buy several parts cars to get enough seats!. The Car is a beast with 8 lug wheels and 10ply tires. He installed an all new interior adding seat belts for 12 passengers. Installed a Chevy 350 4 bolt engine backed up with a Turbo 400 transmission. Sand blasted everything.

A Checker expert says this rare Checker Limo would easily appraise for $125,000. I am curious to hear from him after he installs the Jeep lower steering shaft. If it works as planned he will post his findings on the Checker forum. Checker cabs are now mostly seen in old movies if the movie was shot in New York City. Be a cool vehicle to use for a wedding once the virus becomes a mere part of past history!

More proof that no matter what car make or model you can name almost without any question with the internet there is a forum and a club for it!

PHOTO 4 - We show both of Bill's Checker cabs.

FOR SALE - 35TH ANNIVERSARY 2002 CAMARO THIS CAR IS STILL AVAILABLE -

Most of the stock parts included in the sale. The price is $20,900. This rare car is located about 5 miles from my house. The current owner is recently married and has no time to enjoy the car he has had for approximately 8 years. For more photos email me [email protected] I can also put interested buyers in touch with the seller.

ANOTHER STORY FROM MY MEMORY -

Back in my towing days in the 1970s something I bought was a mint condition 20,000 mile 1961 Hillman Minx convertible. Car was garage kept. Black exterior with a red convertible top and a red vinyl interior. Problem was the transmission was shot. It would run but would not go forward or backwards. They had a very unusual transmission that was very costly to repair. I can’t remember what I paid for it. I bought it because it was absolutely mint inside and out. Naturally my friends thought I had lost my mind buying such a weird car especially since the transmission was bad. Back then it was way before the internet and I would place my ads in Hemmings.

I heard from a person out by Pittsburgh who was a buyer for a museum. They wanted to buy the car for the museum. A deal was struck and the car went to this museum. The perfect fit actually since cars don’t need to move in a museum. So you could say I had the last laugh!

Here is another example of me buying a car that I had zero knowledge about. It was the late 1980s or early 1990s. I went to look at a BMW 3 series. A small wholesaler had a small stash of cars in a warehouse. He pulls out the BMW I came to look at. The car fell short of my expectations and I was ready to call it a wasted trip. Something all of us have taken when searching for the car of your dreams. He says I got a car that is really nice. It's a manual shift car black with a mint tan interior. The owner was able to garage it day and night. He owned a company and would park the car inside at work.

I said I am game let me see it. He brings out a Saab coupe. The car is like brand new and still has the leather tag on the seat. Smells new inside. It’s a Saab, a car I have never owned nor driven. They have that ignition switch on the center console. I think going by memory it may have been a turbo car which is why it peaked my interest.

Turns out it drives as nice as it looks. We make a deal. I figure this could be a tough car to sell for me. I put the car for sale in my monthly printed Grand News. I get a customer call me from New York. Says he gave the information on the Saab to his friend who is a huge Saab fanatic. I said great long as he didn't ask me too many questions as my knowledge on Saabs would not amount to much.

This potential buyer is a serious player so much so he says he will pay this company to send a tech person down to inspect the car and report back to him. I think the service for this was like $150 or so. I said I had no problem with that. A week or so later this technician shows up and I give him the key to the Saab and leave him to his business. About an hour later he says he is done with his inspection. He says normally they are forbidden to tell me the seller any of his findings, but in this case since the car was so perfect and represented he would tell me his findings. The only flaw he found was the cassette player did not work. I said I actually never tried it so I doubt I would have told the potential buyer that it worked. He said the car was really a nice example.

That customer ended up buying my lst time purchasing a Saab. Few years later I would buy a second Saab coupe and actually sold it to a local car dealer that had a buyer seeing a specific model Saab. My point? A mint well cared for car will always have a potential buyer regardless of the knowledge you the seller has.

THIS WAS A REAL SHOCKER -

With so few car magazines now in print I subscribe to a few of them. One of them is Hemmings Classic Car. I just got the December 2020 issue. The real shocker was there was a 2-page article on guess what the lowly Yugo! Introduced to the US market in 1987 marketed as the cheapest new car that year at $3995.00. That first year it had a 1.1 litre 4 cylinder engine putting out a remarkable 55 horsepower. I think John Deere lawn tractors have more horsepower than that! Article goes on to state buyers were treated to full carpeting and color -coordinated fabric upholstery and even a low fuel warning light! Even came equipped with a tool kit! Four different models and in 1988 a convertible was produced. I read somewhere only 27 Yugo convertibles were ever built. I have never seen one. Believe it or not there is even a National club for Yugo fans should you wish to join. Ironically the Yugo speedometer reads higher than 85 mph!

I have mentioned the lowly Yugo from time to time in my writings since it came out the same time 1987 as the last year for the Turbo Regal. The local junkyard near our old house had 3 or 4 of them lined up back in the 1989-1990 time frame. I had him bring over the best looking one so I could have it. When we moved I should have brought it up to the new house but I junked it instead. I think Hemmings Classic Cars should have saved that story for the April Fools issue!

URGENT REQUEST -

We need good used 1986-1987 Turbo Regal steering wheel cores! To see if your core is acceptable email me [email protected] a photo prior to sending it for $100 credit. Help us help others restore their cars. We have an urgent need for good steering wheel cores.

TIPS AND IDEAS YOU HAVE TRIED -

Mike out of Westerly, Rhode Island had a friend end up paying over $1200 to repair wires in his collector car due to mice eating the wires in his stored car. To avoid rodent damage he recommends Tomcat brand Mouse killer. Each of these special blocks will kill 12 mice. It is for use indoors. As I have stated in the past I have 2 cats on 24 hour patrol. Actually my one cat once in a while brings a rodent in once in a while to “toy” with it til he either kills it or it suffers a major heart attack! With winter fast approaching you better have a remedy in place!

TIP FROM KIRBAN –

One of our best sellers is our #7037 the 1984-1987 Turbo Real screws for the headlight bezels and parking light bezels. Kit includes the torx head screws both in black or silver for either format. If you use regular screws the initial impression people get is the front end has been hit and reassembled with regular screws.

IMPORTANT - INFORMATION ABOUT OUR SHIPPING ADDRESS –

If you are returning any cores or products, it is important that you send them to the correct address.

KIRBAN PERFORMANCE PRODUCTS

We discovered that FedEx will not forward any packages that are sent to the PO Box or to our old address in Plumsteadville. Instead they deliver the packages to the old address and leave them outside. They refuse to forward and say that we should notify the shipper. In most cases, we have no idea when we are getting packages shipped back to us.

If you have any cores that are being sent back to us, be sure to use the correct address, especially if you use FedEx. Otherwise, we may not receive your package or it may be sent back to you.

NEW PRODUCTS FROM US –

“A BOOST OF BUICK PERFORMANCE”
OWNER’S MANUAL HOLDER

Usually the more expensive GM cars have a nice holder for their Owner’s Manual.

Originally Buick put all the documents in a plain clear plastic bag. Since these turbo cars didn’t come with a holder in the car, we’ve designed one.

Our black vinyl Owner’s Manual holder measures 6-3/4" x 10" and fits perfectly in your glove box.

The words “A BOOST OF BUICK PERFORMANCE” appear in silver below the flap.

There are two business card holders on the flap. You can insert your insurance company agent’s business card or your mechanic’s business card.

This holder is great for storing the Owner’s Manual, Warranty cards, insurance papers, service records, etc.

It also makes a great gift item for any car enthusiast.
An excellent protection for your Owner’s Manual and documents.

GM LICENSED -
“BUICK MOTORSPORTS” FENDER COVER

The “BUICK MOTORSPORTS” logo is silk screened in white, red and tan on a 34″ x 22″ black fender cover and is GM licensed.

It is made from a non-slip PVC foam cushioned material, so it won’t slide off the fender. Because the surface is non-slip, it holds your tools in place and minimizes potential chips and scratches. It resists most automotive fluids, such as motor oil, brake fluid, coolant, etc.

This recognizable logo is sure to appeal to any Buick owner. We offer it individually as Part #7547 or as a pair Part #7548.

These fender covers are a must-have addition to your garage items, and can also be stored in the trunk in case you need to protect the fenders while away from the garage.

Our photos show the fender cover flat and as it appears folded.

This fender cover also makes a unique gift for any Buick enthusiast or mechanic.

BUTYL TAPE - 5/16” DIAMETER 10-FOOT ROLL -

This butyl tape is black, 5/16" diameter, and comes in a 10-foot roll.

The list of uses for this product is endless. Butyl tape has a strong adhesive and excellent sealing effect. It has very good waterproof performance. It is a "tape type" sealer used by glass shops to seal windshields and rear window glass.

It is not available in most auto stores, which is why we now carry it. Its unique feature of controlled compressibility allows easy installation and yet will not squeeze out when pressed. I have been using it for a variety of projects for many years.

We include it with several of the parts we sell, such as the LED Third Brake Light and the foam filter for the wastegate solenoid. In both cases, it is used to hold the part in place. It’s ideal to fill small holes in the trunk. Buick used it to seal the quarter windows.

If you have a section of wind noise on the weatherstrip seal to the door glass, simply put a section of butyl tape between the molding and the weatherstrip to "puff" out that section of the weatherstrip. The problem is solved. If you have T-Tops and are replacing the metal T section, it’s ideal to use this between the T metal bar and the roof area.

It’s ideal to help seal any moldings in place or lose trim.

Every owner should have a roll of butyl tape in their garage or workshop.

1982-1987 Buick Regal (Including Turbo Regals) -
TINTED PARKING LIGHT COVERS (2)

Years ago we sold a similar product. This new design of front parking light covers goes between the actual light assembly and the metal exterior bezel. These are machined drilled and each cover has polished finished edges.

This design makes these covers look like a factory part. Since the covers go between the lens and the outer bezel, you do not see any edges of the covers. The same factory screws are long enough to make them fit properly.

Each side is machined for perfect fit and drilled to fit exactly over the parking light lens. They still let enough light out. They will never come loose and they look stock for the car.

In recent years the "all black look" has become popular. On a Grand National or a WE4 with a black bumper, this gives a nice appearance of everything blending into solid black.

This makes for a cleaner look on the bumper, especially for the Grand National and WE4 models with the black bumpers, since it tones down the bright amber parking light. A subtle change to enhance the front end of the car and the perfect touch for any Grand National or T-Type.

Both tinted parking light covers are the same, are easy to install, and fit any 1982-1987 Regal model.

Since these are made especially for us, we can offer a very reasonable price.

NOTE - ABOUT LINKS IN THE INNER CIRCLE -

We have heard from a couple people that have had problems with the links in our Inner Circle.

When we check the links, they work fine. However, if you are not able to be directed to the exact website page or internet site, you can "copy" and "paste" the link into the URL in your browser (such as Safari, Firefox, Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, etc.) If it doesn't link in one browser, it may work in another.

Most people having problems are using Internet Explorer. If you are having issues with links, try another browser to see if it works.

You may need to "UPDATE" your browser to be used if you are using the current version.

NOTE ABOUT PHOTOS ON THE WEBSITE -

We have heard from a couple people that have viewed the photos on the website. Because these must be low-resolution photos to work on the Inner Circle segments on the website, any photos of text don't appear clear when enlarged. This is a problem when you are trying to see numbers, such as those on the VIN labels or pages from Options booklet. Also, because of photo reproduction and computer screen variations, the colors may not be true to the actual product or photo.

Any inquiries concerning used parts, you must email me directly - [email protected] - and I will answer you. However, if I fail to answer you within 24 hours, please email us again. Since expanding into used parts, I get a lot of emails and sometimes I may forget your request or may not remember who requested the item.

IN CLOSING -

We have several high volume fuel pumps coming from several suppliers to fill our back orders. Also expect to have upper and lower 1986-1987 Turbo Regal radiator hoses shortly to fill our back orders. Just a few items that have proven to be tough to get over the last 4-5 months.
