Greetings Turbo Regal Inner Circle Members 11-10-2021 -

MORE PHOTOS OF THE LAST GRAND NATIONAL BUILT BOUND FOR AUCTION -

If you have been following the last several Inner Circle emails we have featured 4 photos each week that Bob Colvin sent me from his historic journey to witnessing first hand the build of the last 1987 Grand National. This historic example will be auctioned off at the January Barrett Jackson Auction in Scottsdale, Arizona this coming January. Regardless of what you as a reader think, whatever this car sells for can only help the value of your Grand National. Most choose to enjoy and drive their cars and some owners don’t. It is just like some owners choose to take the 100% stock approach and others seek to modify their cars to get the most power.

PHOTO 1 - The top left photo has appeared in several magazines. I like to own that sign! The top right photo shows the actual window sticker with hand written date and time of completion. The bottom left photo shows the engine with various signatures of the various assembly workers on the turbo shield and inlet pipe. The bottom right photo shows the window sticker being attached to the passenger door glass.

Another memory is just a shame I never took photos of it. I remember one Grand National I bought from a seller who purchased the car new. The turbo shield had some names written on it. The seller had no idea why nor did he attempt to remove them. Neither did I when I sold the car.

MORE PARTS SEE RARE PARTS SECTION -

Again only subscribers can see the Rare Parts and prices. If you are not a subscriber simply email me direct [email protected] to join. It's free. We now have over 700 weekly Inner Circle emails. We also have over 3,500 subscribers. Two records that I am sure will stand a long time alongside the record of Turbo Regals and GNXs we have sold as a specific Turbo Regal vendor.

A FEW MORE PARTS -

PHOTO 2 - The top left photo shows one of the last original NOS GM radiator overflow caps with 2 NOS wastegate foam filters and a glossy black powder coated safety hood latch. The top right photo shows a used pair of 1986-1987 Grand National front bucket seats complete. The driver's seat is a power seat that has never tested it. Center trigger on the switch is broken. The bottom left photo shows a real nice complete nothing cracked or broken tail light assembly. The red lens has been polished. The bottom right photo shows a used 1986-1987 Turbo Regal electric fan assembly with the bracket and uncut harness.

NEW UPGRADED REPRODUCTION BUICK REGAL FLOOR SHIFTER -

We offer it two ways. With the NOS GM factory grey handle and without. The handle included under the one part number you still need to transfer your original parts to the new handle. One area of improvement. The original handle is steel and chrome plated which rusts over many years. Also the top groove that locks the handle in place can easily break which causes the handle to not stay in position. The new neck is stainless which doesn't rust and is stronger than the steel version. Where the shift cable attaches to the factory pin can wear over time. This problem was addressed also. The pin now is stainless and is welded in place.

The base plate like the driveshaft Buick never painted. That turns to rust. The new plate is painted to avoid those issues. The spring on the j hook can rust and lose tension over time. The new spring has upgraded tension for cleaner, firmer shifts. The original J rod bends over time and will not always return into alignment with the detent bracket. This was solved by increased hardened steel. The detent bracket wears over time; this new detent bracket is stainless to avoid those issues. This reminds me of a similar issue surrounding another popular GM car, the 4-speed GTOs with the Hurst shifter.

As many readers know, I have a deep connection with Hurst for many years. My wife worked there in 1970 and even drove a 1964 GTO to work. Hurst, as you know back in 1963 time frame, landed the Pontiac account just as Pontiac introduced the 1964 GTO. Much to Hurst’s dismay Hurst could not stamp or emboss their name on the chrome stick. Adding to this dilemma was Pontiac, to save money and time on the assembly line, used their linkage rods and their format to attach each rod to each lever at the base of the shifter. Their format was a clinch design. Hurst shifter linkage was a threaded rod with a threaded tab that was held in place with a clip to the base of the shifter housing. In other words a format that provided a positive shift each time and never changed. The Pontiac method was a slip and slide format. Quick to install, but not as firm as the Hurst format.

Hurst got smart and I would buy what Hurst called a KPO kit. This kit consisted of the parts to enhance the factory Hurst shifter to be worthy of the Hurst name. The end result was positive firm shifts! It was a huge seller for us for many years back in the late 1970s and 1980s. By the time 1965 rolled around, Pontiac soon realized the power of the Hurst name and allowed Hurst to emboss their name in the chrome stick. Outside of the tires, this was a first where another company was allowed to display their name on a visible part. At some point Buick and Olds got on board with Hurst and Chevrolet for whatever reason never did get on board from what I recall and stuck with their flimsy Muncie shifter. George Hurst always liked the Oldsmobile because they did a Hurst Olds instead of a GTO special model. Although without any doubt Pontiac was the homerun for Hurst with manual shifters in both 3-speed and 4-speed versions. The GTO was by far the leader. Again I am going by memory. It didn't matter much Pontiac cranked out thousands of manual 4 speed cars and 3 speed manual cars. Today the manual shifter is a rarity in car models. Even the young woman who owns the small used car dealership I inspect and drive cars at two bid lots every week refuses to even start a manual shift car as she has no idea how to drive them!

Looking back, it is kind of funny that George Hurst's last name starts with the letter H which is the shift pattern for what undoubtedly provided Hurst with a comfortable living for many years. Their other well known product is still in use today the “Jaws of Life”. The name says it all. The Jaws of Life. That tool emergency crews use saves precious time when every minute can mean life or death to extract people from car wrecks. Years ago my wife and I got to actually witness it first hand at the scene of an accident.

PHOTO 3 - We show two views of the new upgraded reproduction floor shifter for all 1978-1987 Buick Regals including the 1984-1987 Turbo Regals. The several improvements over the stock one is well worth the price to change it out from your 30 plus year old floor shifter. The other two photos show the color cover of the spiral bound 360 page Kirban Side of the Road book and several of the pages. All short stories are 3-4 pages with photos. Great Christmas gift for that “car person” plus I will personally sign it to the person you plan to give it to.

PRICING FOR THE NEW UPGRADED REPRODUCTION FLOOR SHIFTER -

The part number for just the upgraded reproduction floor shifter is #7959. The price is $269.95.

The part number for the upgraded reproduction floor shifter with a NOS GM grey handle included is #7960. The price is $299.95. (You save $20). You must call the office as they may not yet be on our website.

PHOTO 4 - The top left photo shows two Johnny Lightning diecast cars. I came across these two Johnny Lightning 1:64 scale cars, Both were limited to just 2,500 produced. The detail is quite good on both. Includes a special storage metal tin which seems weird. These two are part of a series of 3 in their “Pro Collector Storage Tin Collection”. The third one in this unique collection is a 1972 Chevy Vega Panel Express. Seems like a weird assortment!

The top right we found last week when we were cleaning out our basement. This is an original Buick poster featuring the 1986 Grand National. It is framed with a glass frame. Measures 2 feet by 3 feet. I think I got this when we leased our 1987 Grand National in the fall of 1987. I convinced the dealer to give it to me?

The bottom left is another basement find from last week. I have no idea or memory how I obtained this 6-pack of Coca-Cola. Bottles are dated 1996. They all feature Kyle Petty on the bottle. They are perfect as is the 2003 Christmas bottle.

The bottom right is another basement find. This is quite rare as it was produced in 1977 and limited to just 1,000 made. A glass mirror. This used to hang in my home office on Sugarbottom Road for many years. At one time during the 1970s I did extensive trips with my Dad as he would line up speaking engagements across the country. I would be on the road 12-15 days every month. At my Dads meeting I had to wear a suit and tie but during the day I could go anywhere into any small town as long as I was at the Church on time each night. My Dad travelled with another associate to each meeting. I quickly discovered that down south was a lot different in the 1970s than what I was used to up north.

I would buy pinball machines, coca-cola signs and unique store displays. A lot of small southern towns had Coca-Cola bottling plants. I would buy their old signs. I still have a very rare Mountain Dew Hillbilly display that is probably over 75 years old. I eventually got smart and bought an open car trailer to haul on these road trips and would try and buy a car on each trip. The cars down south did not have the rust issues cars had in my area. Looking back on that time period it was a lot of fun. One trip to the west coast I was gone for 6 weeks. At my Dad's nightly meetings I would sell his books and act intelligent. My Dad has far more books to his credit than I do and his writing was on Bible Prophecy. Two of his books have topped the half million mark in sales back in the 1970s. All 4 of these items that I describe above appear under the Rare Parts section for sale.

TWO NEW REPRINTED REGAL INFORMATION BOOKLETS STILL COPIES AVAILABLE -

As more and more owners seek out ways to prove documentation, we have put together two very handy spiral bound 5 ½ by 8 ½ booklets that virtually will decode most of the information about any 1984-1987 Turbo Regal. These booklets include breaking down and explaining the 17 digit VIN number, the basic cost for each option for each year 1984 through 1987 Turbo Regal, the code Buick assigned to each available option. Example most of these years you had 4 or 5 radio choices that would tell you which radio your car came with. Also included in this one booklet that runs 70 pages is virtually 95% of the explanation of the codes that are listed on the trunk ID label, also known as the SPI label. While I was researching this project I found I had about 100 of these very small Bad To The Bone decals. We will also include 2 of these Bad To The Bone decals as well with each purchase.

The other booklet covers the GNX project from Proposal to Production. It is also spiral bound 5 ½ by 8 ½ and runs 40 pages. It covers virtually every letter between Buick and ASC. Also Molly letters about the GNX book and jacket. The GNX warranty. The test results on the 3 different GNX test cars they used for testing. This booklet provides almost all the information on the background of the GNX project. Both these spiral bound booklets can be found under the Rare Parts section.

See the Rare Parts section.

TWO NEW ARRIVALS -

I picked up these two vehicles last night. Both are currently at our home location in Pennsylvania. One is a 2004 Crossfire coupe. A rare manual 6 speed. With just 17,XXX actual miles. Black exterior. Two tone interior. Tires like new. The car is as close to new as you can find. All stock has optional heated seats. Drives 100%. Similar to the one we had earlier this past year. Fun car to drive and a solid performer on the road. The price is $17,700 basically the same as the actual miles. Car has been driven approximately 1,000 miles per year! Crossfire may go to a collector auction if it doesn't sell.

The second vehicle is a 2006 Hummer H3. Bright red with black/tan cloth interior. H3 has 88,000 miles. Very clean inside and out. H3 has zero paint fade. Brand new tires and runs 100%. H3 is very tight and quiet. The price is $17,900. For more exact details and photos email me personally [email protected] I drove both of them the other night. Possible trades considered on either vehicle. Both are stand up “Kirban Quality”.

BREAKING NEWS 1987 GRAND NATIONAL HARDTOP FOR SALE -

Car is located near Chicago. It is a hardtop with a mere 26,000 miles on it. Two owners. Car was taken down to bare metal and repainted 8 years ago. Car was always garage kept. Paint does have some flaws. Paint is cracking on the header panel. Overall nice exterior with all new weathersripping and seals. Concert sound II car with factory radio. No cracks in the dash or console. No tears or fading in the seats.

Under the hood is a built factory block with stock crank, rods, forged pistons and a comp camshaft. Everything is well documented. Engine was built by Gary Oswald of Street Performance, a well known performance shop from years ago. Car has only gone about 1,000 miles since the work was done. Maintains factory heat and AC. The entire car is rust free. Rides on reproduction GNX style wheels with new tires. Perfect turn key, enjoyable show and street car. Asking price is $38,500. Clean title and carfax. Partial trades considered. Email me [email protected] and I can provide more info and photos.

REAR SEAT BRACES -

With winter approaching this is one winter project that you will feel the benefits within the first mile of driving on a bumpy or rough road. Also the first time you run over railroad tracks. This is even true if your Turbo Regal is a hardtop. While several designs are sold, the one we market has sold several thousand over almost 25 years. (We wholesale to other suppliers). Part number #1586 at $99.95 and they are currently in stock. You do have to remove your rear seat and the seat belt to avoid accidently drilling through the back seat when drilling the holes for the 4 braces. The rear seat braces help prevent creating more stress cracks. We also recommend our new lock pillar reinforcement plates. They stiffen the area around the door striker and also hide any existing cracks. Easy to install. Part number #6774 price is $43.95/set. Same time well worth replacing the actual door strikers. Still GM originals NOS part number #6776 at $21.95/set.

With winter fast approaching, it may be time to stop in your local animal shelter and pick up a cat or two. They could be your best option to keep rodents from attacking the hood pad and the wiring in your pride and joy. Best to keep the car covered as well as cats are known to seek higher places to rest. I have two in my pole building and the only rodents I see in the winter are dead ones.

NEW PRODUCTS FROM US –

1986-1987 Buick GRAND NATIONAL -
REPRODUCTION GRAND NATIONAL15" x 7" WHEEL SETS

Because of many requests, we now offer reproduction Grand National wheels.

This high-quality reproduction of the popular chrome steel 15" by 7" Grand National wheel has been well received since it was first introduced a few years ago. Due to the high costs involved in getting original steel wheels re-chromed, it has made this reproduction Grand National wheel in aluminum extremely popular among Grand National owners. In order to re-chrome the original steel Grand National wheels, it requires the wheels to be cut apart so the center is separated from the outer rim.

These reproduction wheels have the same back spacing as the original wheels, 3.75". The entire wheel is fully powder coated. This was done for corrosion protection. The front of the wheel is done in the correct black powder coating. This will not flake off. The center caps with these wheels have the correct looking “Turbo 6” logo in the matching original colors. To make the caps stay in place on the wheel a snap ring is used on the back side of the cap.
The opening for the center cap is 3". You can install a T-Type center cap or a GNX-style center cap if you desire to achieve a different look. The inside lip that appears on the front of the steel wheels, which usually collected dirt and eventually rust, was eliminated. Water would generally get trapped in that area of the wheel.

Aluminum wheels have several advantages over the steel chrome wheels. The major advantage is the weight savings. Also, no more issues with rust. The typical steel Grand National wheel with center cap weighs 28.36 lbs. This reproduction aluminum 15" by 7" Grand National wheel with center cap only weighs 17.76 lbs. When you multiple by 4, you can see the tremendous weight savings over the steel chrome Grand National wheels.

All wheels are tested and speed rated. Each set comes complete with center caps, lug nuts, and valve stems.

Wheels are dropped shipped from Illinois and a set of 4 wheels generally costs about $65-$100 for shipping to any of the 48 contiguous states. Call for shipping for other states or Canada - 215-766-1611.

For the serious racer who wants every available advantage. These are made from the same bumper molds we used to sell over 35 years ago. My son did the prep work using the original bumpers on my 1987 Grand National.

These are for the serious racer and not designed for street use since they offer very little protection in case of an accident.

Both bumpers are done in black gelcoat and can be sanded and painted. The factory marker lights and bezels will fit the openings in the front bumper. Both molds were fully prepped and eliminated the rubber cushion completely. Both bumpers have a smooth front since the rubber cushion was completely eliminated. Both bumpers have fiberglass brackets on the back side that are slotted for adjustments to attach just like the original bumpers.

The fiberglass front bumper weighs just 8 pounds. The stock steel bumper with the reinforcement brace can weigh as much as 45 pounds depending on whether the reinforcement brace is steel or aluminum. You save 37 pounds.

The fiberglass rear bumper weighs less than 10 pounds. The stock steel rear bumper weighs as much as 45 pounds depending on whether it has a steel or aluminum reinforcement brace. You can shed as much as 35 pounds with this fiberglass rear bumper.

We have a special price if you buy both fiberglass bumpers at the same time.

NOTE - Our bumpers are for OFF ROAD USE ONLY! They are NOT made to withstand any collision! NOT LEGAL FOR STREET USE!

NOTE - We recommend these bumpers be installed by a qualified autobody shop. Bumper should be sanded and painted. Easy to install.

Another excellent replacement for any exterior restoration.

*NOTE - Price includes the shipping and handling UPS Ground Shipping to 48 U.S. continental states

REBUILT ORIGINAL AC DELCO MASS AIR FLOW SENSOR

We are one of the very few sources to offer completely rebuilt original AC Delco mass air flow sensors for the 1986-1987 Turbo Regals. New mass air flow sensors have been discontinued from AC Delco for several years.

Other available rebuilt units are rebuilt using late-model Camaro mass air flow sensors, not rebuilt from original 1986-1987 Turbo Regal cores like these.
When comparing ours to the various reproductions, it’s important to note that the original one has the “AC Delco” logo embossed on the top cover, which is visible on the car. Others may not have that feature. We have highlighted the embossed logo area with a red arrow in our first photo.

Ours are 100% correct original mass air flow sensors with the proper plug, which came on the car originally.
Original parts will always be the top choice over any reproduction, especially for those wanting to keep their car original.

Sensor has the harness plug in the proper location and comes with a manufacturer’s 90-day Warranty.

LOCK PILLAR REINFORCEMENT PLATES (2) IN STOCK FOR IMMEDIATE DELIVERY

This 2mm thick spacer is designed to give the door pin more support.

If you look at the area where the striker is attached, more than likely you will see hairline cracks. They are spot welds that hold a cage nut so you can attach the door striker. These spot welds tend to take the place of one of the 2mm spacers and at the same time give the door striker more support.

This lock pillar reinforcement plate is shaped to look as if it came on the car from the factory. The reinforcement plate measures approximately 4″ x 5″, comes powder-coated glossy black for a lasting finish (glossy black will blend with most dark colors doors and all the Grand Nationals), and are sold as a pair. Plates are easy to install.

It’s interesting to note that GM actually had a recall on another Buick model, the Somerset, back in 1985 for having a similar problem. Their solution at the time was similar to these reinforcement plates.

Another excellent replacement for any interior restoration.

NOTE - ABOUT LINKS IN THE INNER CIRCLE -

We have heard from a couple people that have had problems with the links in our Inner Circle.

When we check the links, they work fine. However, if you are not able to be directed to the exact website page or internet site, you can "copy" and "paste" the link into the URL in your browser (such as Safari, Firefox, Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, etc.) If it doesn't link in one browser, it may work in another.

Most people having problems are using Internet Explorer. If you are having issues with links, try another browser to see if it works.

You may need to "UPDATE" your browser to be used if you are using the current version.

NOTE ABOUT PHOTOS ON THE WEBSITE -

We have heard from a couple people that have viewed the photos on the website. Because these must be low-resolution photos to work on the Inner Circle segments on the website, any photos of text don't appear clear when enlarged. This is a problem when you are trying to see numbers, such as those on the VIN labels or pages from Options booklet. Also, because of photo reproduction and computer screen variations, the colors may not be true to the actual product or photo.

If you would like to have us email you any photo at the higher resolution for viewing, just email us and we will email them to you. Be sure to be specific on which pictures you want to see - Reference Inner Circle date and photo number 1, 2, 3 or 4 - [email protected]

ABOUT OUR EMAILS -

Any inquiries concerning used parts, you must email me directly - [email protected] - and I will answer you. However, if I fail to answer you within 24 hours, please email us again.
Since expanding into used parts, I get a lot of emails and sometimes I may forget your request or may not remember who requested the item.

IN CLOSING -

Remember, the weekly Inner Circle always goes out at 3 pm eastern time so subscribers all have the same equal chance on the Rare Parts. All our parts generally are priced to sell and below what others offer. Also our used items are exactly as described. Emails are acknowledged in the order we receive them regardless of when I respond as I am not always by a computer and I only use a flip phone. It's best to email as soon as possible as many of our items sell within the first hour! Do NOT call the office on the listed Rare Parts as you could lose out by someone beating you with an email.
