ANNUAL THANKSGIVING M&Ms CONTEST –
Long-time customers know the history behind our annual M&Ms Thanksgiving contest and later this year, our annual Christmas M&Ms contest. For those that may not know, I do the M&Ms contest in memory of my Mom. She would do it for us 5 kids, usually at every Thanksgiving and Christmas dinner. I also do this at annual Open House events and any seminars I conduct.
Here are the rules. You get to submit 1 single guess as to the number of M&Ms you think is in the container that is shown in Photo 1. That single guess must be emailed to me - [email protected]
The deadline for your guess is Saturday night, 12 midnight eastern time November 24th, 2018. This gives you plenty of time due to the holiday.
You don’t need to be a subscriber to the weekly Inner Circle to participate. Contest is open to all our customers. Buick parts companies are not eligible.
The closest guess under the actual count will be declared the winner. In the rare event of a tie, the earliest email I receive will get the prize that includes the actual M&Ms container shown.
The winner will get the actual container pictured filled with M&Ms. Included will be the 6 packs of French vanilla coca mix than came in the container originally, the new Denali power bank, and a copy of the “Kirban Side of the Road” book. The second place winner gets a Denali power bank.
PHOTO 1 – We show the metal container that is filled with M&Ms. Here are the clues. The container is approximately 4-½ inches tall by 3-½ inches wide on all 4 sides. Those of you that have an engineer degree may be able to figure out how many M&Ms would occupy that amount of space!

MORE LITTLE TIPS CONCERNING THE TURBO REGAL –
Again, this all comes back to me now that I have detailed this very original 1987 Grand National. Whichever Buick assembly line worker had the job of securing the plastic base collar to the leather-wrapped steering wheel often never tightened up the three 7mm screws.
It didn’t matter if I had a 5,000-mile Grand National or a 50,000-mile Grand National, almost without fail the base collar on the steering wheel was lose. This 1987 Grand National was no different. All three 7mm screws were completely unattached to the base of the steering wheel.
You need a basic steering wheel puller to remove the steering wheel. Once you pop the steering wheel off the base collar, wheel in most cases is not even attached to the actual steering. Once you have both parts of the steering column, you can re-attach the base collar to your steering wheel. The end result is that you have eliminated one annoying rattle.
PHOTO 2 – The photo to the left top shows the basic steering wheel with the horn ring removed. You then have a safety clip that sits on the column stud that you need to remove before backing out the column nut. The top right photo shows the steering wheel puller in position ready to pop off the actual steering wheel. The bottom left shows that the actual steering wheel has been removed yet the base collar stayed in place because all 3 of the 7mm screws had come lose. The bottom right photo shows the steering wheel upside down and the base collar installed with the three 7mm screws secured. This is a simple project to perform. It’s just one that should not have happened in the first place.
With the steering wheel removed from the steering column take a good look at the column and see if it is centered up in the opening of the dash cluster. If it is not centered locate the nuts under the dash that secure the bracket to the column. I believe they may be 13mm nuts. The brackets are slotted so you can make a minor left or right adjustment if needed to center your steering column in the opening of your dash cluster.
Another possible annoyance may be the plastic chrome strip that just sits in a grove and goes across the bottom edge of most of your dash. In some cases, it may be drooping out of the groove. This is another annoyance. Butyl tape (which is like black chewing gum) will quickly solve that issue.
Another item related to the dash that droops is the plastic panel under the main dash cluster. Buick did not put much effort into making that part fit properly! Years ago, we made a fiberglass panel that did not droop. Choices today are to eliminate it completely or brace it.
For some reason, based on cars I have seen, on some 1986 models the dash pad may split along the top edge. Unfortunately, I don’t have any ideas on how to fix this quickly. Replacing the entire dash pad would be a project and I would not even want to attempt it with my limited skills. Not to mention the fact you have no idea if another dash pad may suffer the same fate.
It’s tough enough to replace that plastic speaker panel in front of the dash pad. By today’s standards, the entire dash and gauge cluster format is extremely primitive looking compared to even the most basic cars today. Not to mention the poor illumination of the gauges at night. But that is not why you bought the car in the first place. You bought the car because of what the engineers did under the hood. The magic was the combination of a turbo that was intercooled and developed tremendous low end torque. The cooler the air, the more power you have.

ANOTHER NEW TURBO REGAL PRODUCT –
PHOTO 3 - Shows the new pair of stainless hood bumper studs with rubber stoppers. In most cases, you can’t adjust the ones on the Turbo Regals today as they are rusted making hood adjustments virtually impossible. Also, the rubber stopper is probably hard as a rock, which makes it useless. These two rubber stoppers should be soft and kept greased to eliminate what may sound like your windshield cracking when you go over railroad tracks or a big bump on the road. Actually that sound is from the hood moving.

I highly recommend the Christmas Special #8702 that gives you the complete body and core support bushing kit complete with new grade 8 bolts to make the car ride like new again. This is a worthy winter project. I can’t stress it enough, the longer you put this project on the back burner, the bigger the risk you have of having some of the body bolts spin on the cage nut. If this happens the project becomes a lot more involved and costly because welding would be needed to reattach a cage nut to the car.

UPDATE ON GM LICENSED GRAND NATIONAL T-SHIRTS –
These new GM licensed Grand National T-shirts have been a good seller for us. Our initial order is due to arrive in the next 3-4 days. We already have a second order placed for them as well. UPDATE ON 1986 GRAND NATIONAL – POSSIBLY FOR PARTS -
I should have this car later this week. Once I do, I will make a determination on either breaking it up for parts or selling it as a whole car. More than likely it will become a parts car based on my conversation with the owner.
SURF CITY GARAGE PRODUCTS UPDATE –

IT NEVER CEASES TO AMAZE ME –
It never ceases to amaze me whenever I see a squirrel scramble across electric wires over a 4-lane highway instead of darting in and out of 4 lanes of traffic. It appears some squirrels, like humans, have a higher IQ than others.

C-2 – See photo 4 in 11-07-2018 issue. I have 4 of these Cadillac accessory trunk mats. I have them in the trunk of all our cars and use them in the pole building to keep any leaks from getting on the concrete floor. These trunk mats were a Cadillac option around the late 1980s. The mat is reversible rubber on the one side with the Caddy crest logo and grey cloth material on the other side. The trunk mat measures 33 inches by 36 inches, almost a perfect square. Mat is the perfect size for most trunks to protect your original trunk carpet. They are charcoal grey in color. Each one is almost like new with no stains. The price is just $34.95, which includes shipping to the basic 48 states. These mats are very high quality.

UPDATE ON 1987 BUICK GRAND NATIONAL - FOR SALE –

ANOTHER 1987 GRAND NATIONAL FOR SALE -
As of this writing this 1987 Grand National is still available. This example has a great history. I sold it thru O'Neil Buick/GMC back in May of 2000. At that time, it had 26,000 miles on it. It features all original paint, less than 60,000 miles. Very well optioned and has the desirable factory astroroof option.
I just learned of this car so I don't have much info. Car comes with a copy of the original window sticker. Car appears to be 99% stock.
The trunk ID label (SPID) has been signed by Molly twice as the car was at both Reunion events Molly attended for us.

We actually owned this car twice - first in May of 2000 when I got it from the original owner with 26,000 miles on it. The last owner bought it again from us and Mike O’Neil back in 2005 when it had about 55,000 actual miles. Car has always been owned by collectors.

HERE IS A GREAT GIFT IDEA FOR CHRISTMAS –
I recently discovered a product at a GMC dealership gift shop. Many GMC dealerships do not have much of a gift shop if they have one at all. While you have many cheaper choices for a portable power bank to charge tablets, smart phones, etc., most are cheap looking plastic ones. The real concern is most that are not UL certified. Being electrical,UL certification is critical. UL certification reduces the risk of fire or explosions related to lithium batteries. TURBO ENGINE DESCRIPTION MANUAL UPDATE –
In 10-17-2018 Inner Circle, we showed 4 pages from the 1987 Turbo Regal Engine Description Manual. I had gotten these sheets years ago from a source at Buick who helped me with information for my book. I just went through all my files and I found 50 different pages from this 1987 Turbo Engine Description Manual.
I have had several requests for copies so I had some copies made. Pages are in the correct numbered order and spiral bound for easy reading. The price is just $22.95, which includes shipping by mail. 1966 GTO ACRYLIC PICTURE FOR SALE -
We also have a picture of a 1966 GTO on a piece of acrylic. I bought this several years ago at Carlisle. It measures approximately 15” by 20”. It is based on the box cover of the 1966 GTO slot car. That slot car has a value today of about $500, if you got one unbuilt in the original box. (I have one in my private collection). Either item makes for a nice unique gift.

REMEMBER THE VIDEO PROFILE THAT WAS DONE LAST YEAR? –
Steve, the producer of that video, is now producing an automotive radio show in the Philadelphia market and is currently looking for sponsorship. Good news - We now accept Classified Ads in our weekly Inner Circle emails. Over the years several customers have asked about placing an ad in our weekly Inner Circle.
Here are the options and the costs.
Ads can be from any individual or company. It needs to be automotive related, meaning it does not need be specifically Turbo Regal related. It can be for something for sale or something wanted.
Maximum number of words is 125 words, which is about 7 to 9 lines of copy. No photos. You can list a website. We recommend you state your name, phone number or email, a price, and your location in your ad.
The cost for 2 consecutive weeks is $25. The cost for 4 consecutive weeks is $40. You save $10 with the 4-week plan. No changes can be made to your existing running ad. You can only run one ad at any given time. We will have a code system at the end of your ad, so we will know what week number your ad is to run - 2 or 4 weeks.
It can be an ad for something for sale or an ad for something you are looking for.
We have never missed a single week since we started the Inner Circle email format in 2009. It’s something I enjoy doing and I just always seem to have enough material to write about.
Our weekly Inner Circle reaches over 3,300 members every Wednesday direct to their inbox. The Inner Circle also appears every Wednesday on our website with the related photos. Your ad would be visible to both groups of readers. So, the exposure to your ad is well over 3,200 potential buyers.

In many cases, these will fit older GM cars (1958 and up) that used this same format.
GM used studs that rust over a period of time and the rubber bumper stopper gets hard. A rusted stud makes adjustments difficult. A hard rubber stopper can lead to squeaks when you drive over a rough part of the road.
By making them in stainless, you are assured they will not rust.

ANNUAL THANKSGIVING M&Ms CONTEST –
Long-time customers know the history behind our annual M&Ms Thanksgiving contest and later this year, our annual Christmas M&Ms contest. For those that may not know, I do the M&Ms contest in memory of my Mom. She would do it for us 5 kids, usually at every Thanksgiving and Christmas dinner. I also do this at annual Open House events and any seminars I conduct.
Here are the rules. You get to submit 1 single guess as to the number of M&Ms you think is in the container that is shown in Photo 1. That single guess must be emailed to me - [email protected]
The deadline for your guess is Saturday night, 12 midnight eastern time November 24th, 2018. This gives you plenty of time due to the holiday.
You don’t need to be a subscriber to the weekly Inner Circle to participate. Contest is open to all our customers. Buick parts companies are not eligible.
The closest guess under the actual count will be declared the winner. In the rare event of a tie, the earliest email I receive will get the prize that includes the actual M&Ms container shown.
The winner will get the actual container pictured filled with M&Ms. Included will be the 6 packs of French vanilla coca mix than came in the container originally, the new Denali power bank, and a copy of the “Kirban Side of the Road” book. The second place winner gets a Denali power bank.
PHOTO 1 – We show the metal container that is filled with M&Ms. Here are the clues. The container is approximately 4-½ inches tall by 3-½ inches wide on all 4 sides. Those of you that have an engineer degree may be able to figure out how many M&Ms would occupy that amount of space!

MORE LITTLE TIPS CONCERNING THE TURBO REGAL –
Again, this all comes back to me now that I have detailed this very original 1987 Grand National. Whichever Buick assembly line worker had the job of securing the plastic base collar to the leather-wrapped steering wheel often never tightened up the three 7mm screws.
It didn’t matter if I had a 5,000-mile Grand National or a 50,000-mile Grand National, almost without fail the base collar on the steering wheel was lose. This 1987 Grand National was no different. All three 7mm screws were completely unattached to the base of the steering wheel.
You need a basic steering wheel puller to remove the steering wheel. Once you pop the steering wheel off the base collar, wheel in most cases is not even attached to the actual steering. Once you have both parts of the steering column, you can re-attach the base collar to your steering wheel. The end result is that you have eliminated one annoying rattle.
PHOTO 2 – The photo to the left top shows the basic steering wheel with the horn ring removed. You then have a safety clip that sits on the column stud that you need to remove before backing out the column nut. The top right photo shows the steering wheel puller in position ready to pop off the actual steering wheel. The bottom left shows that the actual steering wheel has been removed yet the base collar stayed in place because all 3 of the 7mm screws had come lose. The bottom right photo shows the steering wheel upside down and the base collar installed with the three 7mm screws secured. This is a simple project to perform. It’s just one that should not have happened in the first place.
With the steering wheel removed from the steering column take a good look at the column and see if it is centered up in the opening of the dash cluster. If it is not centered locate the nuts under the dash that secure the bracket to the column. I believe they may be 13mm nuts. The brackets are slotted so you can make a minor left or right adjustment if needed to center your steering column in the opening of your dash cluster.
Another possible annoyance may be the plastic chrome strip that just sits in a grove and goes across the bottom edge of most of your dash. In some cases, it may be drooping out of the groove. This is another annoyance. Butyl tape (which is like black chewing gum) will quickly solve that issue.
Another item related to the dash that droops is the plastic panel under the main dash cluster. Buick did not put much effort into making that part fit properly! Years ago, we made a fiberglass panel that did not droop. Choices today are to eliminate it completely or brace it.
For some reason, based on cars I have seen, on some 1986 models the dash pad may split along the top edge. Unfortunately, I don’t have any ideas on how to fix this quickly. Replacing the entire dash pad would be a project and I would not even want to attempt it with my limited skills. Not to mention the fact you have no idea if another dash pad may suffer the same fate.
It’s tough enough to replace that plastic speaker panel in front of the dash pad. By today’s standards, the entire dash and gauge cluster format is extremely primitive looking compared to even the most basic cars today. Not to mention the poor illumination of the gauges at night. But that is not why you bought the car in the first place. You bought the car because of what the engineers did under the hood. The magic was the combination of a turbo that was intercooled and developed tremendous low end torque. The cooler the air, the more power you have.

ANOTHER NEW TURBO REGAL PRODUCT –
PHOTO 3 - Shows the new pair of stainless hood bumper studs with rubber stoppers. In most cases, you can’t adjust the ones on the Turbo Regals today as they are rusted making hood adjustments virtually impossible. Also, the rubber stopper is probably hard as a rock, which makes it useless. These two rubber stoppers should be soft and kept greased to eliminate what may sound like your windshield cracking when you go over railroad tracks or a big bump on the road. Actually that sound is from the hood moving.

I highly recommend the Christmas Special #8702 that gives you the complete body and core support bushing kit complete with new grade 8 bolts to make the car ride like new again. This is a worthy winter project. I can’t stress it enough, the longer you put this project on the back burner, the bigger the risk you have of having some of the body bolts spin on the cage nut. If this happens the project becomes a lot more involved and costly because welding would be needed to reattach a cage nut to the car.

UPDATE ON 1986 GRAND NATIONAL – POSSIBLY FOR PARTS -
I should have this car later this week. Once I do, I will make a determination on either breaking it up for parts or selling it as a whole car. More than likely it will become a parts car based on my conversation with the owner.

It never ceases to amaze me whenever I see a squirrel scramble across electric wires over a 4-lane highway instead of darting in and out of 4 lanes of traffic. It appears some squirrels, like humans, have a higher IQ than others.

C-2 – See photo 4 in 11-07-2018 issue. I have 4 of these Cadillac accessory trunk mats. I have them in the trunk of all our cars and use them in the pole building to keep any leaks from getting on the concrete floor. These trunk mats were a Cadillac option around the late 1980s. The mat is reversible rubber on the one side with the Caddy crest logo and grey cloth material on the other side. The trunk mat measures 33 inches by 36 inches, almost a perfect square. Mat is the perfect size for most trunks to protect your original trunk carpet. They are charcoal grey in color. Each one is almost like new with no stains. The price is just $34.95, which includes shipping to the basic 48 states. These mats are very high quality.

UPDATE ON 1987 BUICK GRAND NATIONAL - FOR SALE –

ANOTHER 1987 GRAND NATIONAL FOR SALE -
As of this writing this 1987 Grand National is still available. This example has a great history. I sold it thru O'Neil Buick/GMC back in May of 2000. At that time, it had 26,000 miles on it. It features all original paint, less than 60,000 miles. Very well optioned and has the desirable factory astroroof option.
I just learned of this car so I don't have much info. Car comes with a copy of the original window sticker. Car appears to be 99% stock.
The trunk ID label (SPID) has been signed by Molly twice as the car was at both Reunion events Molly attended for us.

We actually owned this car twice - first in May of 2000 when I got it from the original owner with 26,000 miles on it. The last owner bought it again from us and Mike O’Neil back in 2005 when it had about 55,000 actual miles. Car has always been owned by collectors.

HERE IS A GREAT GIFT IDEA FOR CHRISTMAS –
I recently discovered a product at a GMC dealership gift shop. Many GMC dealerships do not have much of a gift shop if they have one at all. While you have many cheaper choices for a portable power bank to charge tablets, smart phones, etc., most are cheap looking plastic ones. The real concern is most that are not UL certified. Being electrical,UL certification is critical. UL certification reduces the risk of fire or explosions related to lithium batteries. I know GM would not offer anything electrical unless it has the UL certification. I know this for sure as a buddy of mine was working on an electrical project and needed GM approval. He was told his product would require a UL certification in order for GM to approve it.

In 10-17-2018 Inner Circle, we showed 4 pages from the 1987 Turbo Regal Engine Description Manual. I had gotten these sheets years ago from a source at Buick who helped me with information for my book. I just went through all my files and I found 50 different pages from this 1987 Turbo Engine Description Manual.
I have had several requests for copies so I had some copies made. Pages are in the correct numbered order and spiral bound for easy reading. The price is just $22.95, which includes shipping by mail. 1966 GTO ACRYLIC PICTURE FOR SALE -
We also have a picture of a 1966 GTO on a piece of acrylic. I bought this several years ago at Carlisle. It measures approximately 15” by 20”. It is based on the box cover of the 1966 GTO slot car. That slot car has a value today of about $500, if you got one unbuilt in the original box. (I have one in my private collection). Either item makes for a nice unique gift.

REMEMBER THE VIDEO PROFILE THAT WAS DONE LAST YEAR? –
Steve, the producer of that video, is now producing an automotive radio show in the Philadelphia market and is currently looking for sponsorship. Sponsors will receive commercial air time during the program as well as web and video presence. Because it’s the inaugural season of the show, rates are low compared to standard radio rates.

Good news - We now accept Classified Ads in our weekly Inner Circle emails. Over the years several customers have asked about placing an ad in our weekly Inner Circle.
Here are the options and the costs.
Ads can be from any individual or company. It needs to be automotive related, meaning it does not need be specifically Turbo Regal related. It can be for something for sale or something wanted.
Maximum number of words is 125 words, which is about 7 to 9 lines of copy. No photos. You can list a website. We recommend you state your name, phone number or email, a price, and your location in your ad.
The cost for 2 consecutive weeks is $25. The cost for 4 consecutive weeks is $40. You save $10 with the 4-week plan. No changes can be made to your existing running ad. You can only run one ad at any given time. We will have a code system at the end of your ad, so we will know what week number your ad is to run - 2 or 4 weeks.
It can be an ad for something for sale or an ad for something you are looking for.
We have never missed a single week since we started the Inner Circle email format in 2009. It’s something I enjoy doing and I just always seem to have enough material to write about.
Our weekly Inner Circle reaches over 3,300 members every Wednesday direct to their inbox. The Inner Circle also appears every Wednesday on our website with the related photos. Your ad would be visible to both groups of readers. So, the exposure to your ad is well over 3,200 potential buyers.

HOOD STOPPERS (2) AND HOOD STUD BUMPERS (2) SET
In many cases, these will fit older GM cars (1958 and up) that used this same format.
GM used studs that rust over a period of time and the rubber bumper stopper gets hard. A rusted stud makes adjustments difficult. A hard rubber stopper can lead to squeaks when you drive over a rough part of the road.
By making them in stainless, you are assured they will not rust.
Each one comes with a new rubber stopper included.

NOTE ABOUT PHOTOS ON THE WEBSITE -
We have heard from a couple people that have viewed the photos on the website. Because these must be low-resolution photos to work on the Inner Circle segments on the website, any photos of text don't appear clear when enlarged. This is a problem when you are trying to see numbers, such as those on the VIN labels or pages from Options booklet. Also, because of photo reproduction and computer screen variations, the colors may not be true to the actual product or photo.
If you would like to have us email you any photo at the higher resolution for viewing, just email us and we will email them to you. Be sure to be specific on which pictures you want to see - Reference Inner Circle date and photo number 1, 2, 3 or 4 - [email protected]
