FOR SALE - 1986 GRAND NATIONAL HARDTOP FOR PARTS –

The 1986 Grand National that we recently mentioned finally arrived last week. This fairly stock original car has been parked out in the elements not used since 2005 according to the inspection sticker. In recent years, so-called barn finds have become very popular at car shows and swap meets. This car would fall into that category although it was not stored in a barn. It was, however, occupied by mice and perhaps other rodents over the years. The seller kept many of the various relays from under the hood, factory air cleaner, coil pack, and the ECM.

Car is kind of unusual in one sense as it has power door locks, yet has crank windows. The car does have the analog dash with power seat and has the desirable light-weight aluminum bumper supports. The body is very straight although the paint has been badly cooked from the sun.

The car shows 72,000 original miles, which according to the seller is original. Seller installed a Coyles double roller timing chain, new valve springs, and the Kenne-Bell 304 stainless headers years ago. I am told the headers were about a thousand dollars. The owner purchased them around 1990 and had them installed on this 1986 Grand National. Since the headers are 304 stainless they still look very good as does the larger down pipe.

Here are my two options to sell the car. The first option is to see if a buyer exists among my customers to purchase the car complete as described. The second option is I would part it out over the winter. With that being said, I have a price on the complete car as described for a very limited time. Should it not sell in that period of time, I will then start to part it out. This would not be a quick process since it is now winter here!

Perhaps one of you reading this can make use of most of the parts and simply sell off the parts you don’t need. Not many fairly complete Grand Nationals come along for parts that are priced under $4995.

This 1986 Grand National as described and pictured is for sale for a very short period of time – 7-10 days. A potential buyer must pay in full for the Grand National prior to me changing my mind to breaking the Grand National up for its parts value.

The price tag for the non-running 1986 Grand National as described is $4,695. With values increasing every year, it only makes cars like this more valuable. I can email potential buyers more photos besides the ones shown in Photo 1 and Photo 2. The Grand National comes with a title. No warranty comes with the engine. The important SPID (trunk ID label) is still intact on the inside trunk lid. The body on this hardtop is very nice and solid. A $500 deposit is required via Paypal to hold this Grand National AFTER you email me personally [email protected] Full payment must be paid within 7 days. Once paid in full, a reasonable deadline to pick up the car would be worked out.

I will only offer this car as described for a short period of time before deciding to dismantle it and sell parts off the car.

Here is a list of upgrades/options as I see them on the car and noted on the SPID label. Car has a stock 3.42 posi rear, aluminum bumper supports, am/fm cassette radio with concert sound option, power locks, analog dash, tilt, cruise, delay wipers, hardtop, power driver’s seat, non-working power antenna, GNX reproduction rear seat brace, Kenne-Bell stainless headers, a-pillar gauges, Caspers ground kit, and non-original wheels. Car also appears to have Caspers feeder kit. According to the seller, the original transmission would need to be rebuilt.

The car is very straight and solid with near mint front end including the original header panel. Bumper fillers are junk. Both doors are very good and shut perfectly. Evidence of rodents is everywhere, which is to be expected. Car rolls with no issue on 4 round tires. Two sets of keys. Spare and jack all there in the trunk. Rear spoiler is perfect. All factory shrouding and intercooler are intact as well.

PHOTO 1 – We show 4 photos of the exterior of the 1986 Grand National. Note how straight and solid the car appears in the photos. All glass is also good.

PHOTO 2 – We show photos of the interior and the engine of this 1986 Grand National barn find. Again, interested parties can simply email me [email protected] if you want to see more photos. Remember, this car has been sitting out in the extreme northeast weather for 13 years. Car would be an excellent parts car or, if you’re young enough and ambitious enough, a long-time restoration project. My offer to sell it complete is only going to be for a 7-10 day window. After that I will simply keep the car and dismantle it over the next several months or when the temperatures rebound in the Spring!

There is a quite a bit of value in some of the main parts that are good, such as the front header panel, power driver’s seat, and 8.5 rear end. This is besides the fact that the original engine only has 72,000 miles on it. These would be the strong selling points with this car.

ANNUAL THANKSGIVING M&Ms CONTEST –

The actual count of M&Ms in the metal container was 865. The First Place winner with a guess of 776 was Ronald Kollar. Ron purchased his 61,000-mile 1987 Grand National in 2011 and has been a customer of ours ever since. He also has attended our Open House events every year. He happens to be an engineer and, using the dimensions I stated, he used a formula to calculate how many M&Ms would fit in the container. His guess was based on his calculations! He has played every contest we have run and this is the first time he has won!

Taking Second Place with a guess of 772 is Stephen Burke.

Congrats to both winners and thanks to those that participated. In a few weeks, we will have our annual Christmas M&Ms contest, so stay tuned.

HALLMARK KEEPSAKE CARS AND TRUCKS –

Every year Hallmark produces several new cars and trucks for their Keepsake tree ornament series. For the last several years I have started to collect them. This year they did 3. The truck this year is the rare 1954 Mercury truck, which is similar to the Ford counterpart. The one car is the rare 1968 Nova SS model. Years ago I had a 1969 Nova 396 with a 4-speed. I actually purchased it from an insurance auction. Back then I would tow the cars a buddy of mine would win from this insurance auction. The car had a rod knock. The Nova was a plain-jane example with a bench seat and a black vinyl roof.

Last, but not least, is the Hallmark diecast car based on the 1938 Buick Y-Job concept car. I thought this was unique that Hallmark based one of them on a GM concept car. Going by memory I think years ago Buick had this 1938 Buick Y-Job car on display at the GS Nationals in Bowling Green, Kentucky.

All these new Hallmark diecasts are priced at $17.99 each at your local Hallmark store. It’s best to shop early as some stores may sell out of the various ornaments and I have no idea what production numbers they make of each one.

Some readers may recall Hallmark did a yellow GSX a few years back that I wrote about and have in my collection.

PHOTO 3 – We show all 3 of the 2018 Hallmark Keepsake diecast vehicles. The detail is quite good. I am not sure what scale they are, but they are all about 4 inches long in length. All 3 are metal. The truck has stake sides and a Christmas tree and gifts in the bed of the truck.

SPEAKING OF CHRISTMAS TREES –

Speaking of Christmas trees, it reminded me of my one time experience of selling Christmas trees from our house that we rented in the early 1970s. The year was around 1971-1972 I had just purchased my first tow truck. It was a hand winch tow truck. It was a vintage 1950-1952 Chevy 1-½ ton. I purchased the tow truck from a friend of mine that ran an Atlantic gas station. I saw that he sold Christmas trees from the gas station. At the time, we rented a huge house that was situated along a major well-traveled 4-lane highway. The house had 4 oversized garages, built in pool, and a huge driveway.

I figured I would give it a try and sell Christmas trees. What I did not realize at first was I had to buy an entire tractor trailer truck load of trees. Meaning, you could not pick the trees you wanted or a certain amount - you had to buy the entire trailer load.

Still that was not too bad. Once our friends found out we were selling Christmas trees, they wanted a good deal. I entered into this venture with the idea of making a few bucks. Another issue came up - as each day passes, the days of selling Christmas trees diminishes and you have to discount them to move them out prior to Christmas day.

When it was all said and done, I don’t think I cleared $100 over costs. A valuable lesson was learned. Stay away from a product that has a short sales life!

My second Christmas tree story involves my late Uncle who had a house on a busy street just on the outskirts of Philadelphia. For years, he had a beautiful spruce tree growing in his tiny front yard. One mid-December night he thought he heard something outside. The next morning his beautiful spruce tree had been chopped off leaving just the stump. I guess not everyone has the proper Christmas spirit.

Both stories are true.

MORE LITTLE TIPS CONCERNING THE TURBO REGAL –

Under the hood of any stock original 1986-1987 Grand National are several small things that help show just how original the engine compartment really is. Example - on the back of the alternator the main wire has a black plastic protective cap to prevent that wire from shorting out.

Check out the metal transmission cooler lines and oil line as they snake along the frame rail on the passenger side. Buick had a unique clip that attached to the 2 metal lines and the one hard rubber line to keep them from rubbing together.

Locate the plastic power steering reservoir, a fragile part for sure! Near it is a stud that secures a line to the power steering bracket. Buick put a small rubber cap over that stud. The metal heater water valve towards the firewall on the passenger side is unique. None of the aftermarket heater water valves I have seen look anywhere near like the AC Delco original heater water valve. In some cases, I have seen where owners have actually installed this heater water valve upside down!

Another place where a small rubber boot is used is on one of the cables going to the throttle body. It is silver grey in color and covers the threaded part of the adjustment screw. If you locate the fuel rail, nearby on the same side of the engine it has a small metal cap on the end of the release valve for the fuel pressure.

On a larger scale, the EGR valve located on the driver’s side has a pop-on black plastic. That cap may be missing.

It is these various little caps and brackets that, over a 30-plus-year span, can be missing even on a well-kept original car. You have to really know these cars to recognize that these features are either on the engine or somehow have disappeared. Given a written test, I would probably score pretty high on placement and position of many of the little parts Buick used under the hood.

PHOTO 4 – The top left shows the black cap on the back of the alternator. The top right photo shows the plastic clip that secures the 2 metal coolant lines with one of the rubber hose lines along the frame rail area on the passenger side. The bottom left photo shows the small rubber boot GM used to cover the stud opposite the power steering reservoir. The bottom right shows the factory metal original AC Delco heater water valve.

UPCOMING JANUARY BARRETT JACKSON AUCTION –

Every January one of Barrett Jackson’s best known auctions happens in Scottsdale, Arizona. Of interest to my readers, there are two sequential numbered 1987 Grand Nationals that were recently discovered that will be going up for auction with no reserve. The one has 900 miles on it and the other has 600 miles on it. I am not sure if the current owner has detailed the cars or left them with 30 years of dust on them. Both appeared this past May 2018 in Hot Rod magazine.

Either way, someone is hoping to cash in on this unique pair of 1987 Grand Nationals. It is probably a safe bet that both need the brake system freshened up. I would not stand in front of either of these cars as they get driven down the lane at the auction in January! This is assuming they start them up.

No matter what you feel is a fair price for this twin pair, it can only enhance the value and allure of 1986-1987 Grand Nationals in general. If you own one, the value can only increase as each year goes by. I am referring to mostly stock examples. No matter what the outcome is, the original buyer picked the right car in the GM family to buy with sequential VIN numbers.

MY VOTE FOR MOVIE OF THE YEAR - GREEN BOOK –

I don’t go to many movies, but I took my granddaughter Devyn to see Green Book over Thanksgiving. By far this movie is the best movie I have seen in recent years. It should win an Oscar for best movie in 2018, and both main actors should be in the running for Oscars as well. Most of the movie audience applauded when the movie ended, it was that good.

The movie is terrific and based loosely on a true story from the winter of 1962. In real life both men remained friends until they died several years ago. This was a very remarkable story, one that I highly recommend. Word of mouth will increase the number of ticket sales each week as more people see the movie. It was so good, I would see it a second time! Go see it!

I traveled throughout much of the deep south in the early 1970s, which was not much different than in the 1960s. I remember seeing signs that said, “whites only” in some places.

ROAD RAGE TO A HIGH NEW LEVEL OF STUPIDITY –

I read this in our weekend newspaper where an impatient driver on a narrow city street lost his patience as an EMT technician had blocked this narrow street to pick up a patient. The EMT technician was loading a patient into the ambulance. The impatient driver started to argue with the EMT technician. The argument quickly escalated and the enraged driver got in his car and rammed the ambulance injuring not only the patient, but the EMT driver as well. The patient suffered a broken leg on top of his initial issue, which required the ambulance originally.

I am pretty sure that enraged driver will have some jail time to think over the big mistake he made!

DOES THIS SOUND FAMILIAR? –

The US Government is investigating complaints with GM Chevrolet and GMC trucks and SUVs. The years in question are 2014 through 2016 for possible faulty vacuum brake pumps. It seems the vacuum pump can deteriorate causing increased braking effort, which results in longer stopping distances. This could possibly affect over 2 million GM vehicles if a recall is issued.

OUR ANNUAL 2018 CHRISTMAS SPECIALS –

Here is a complete listing of our annual Christmas Specials for 2018. These orders must be called in to our office to get the proper discount and shipping costs. We tried to put related items together as a Package Deal to make your project easier.

I highly recommend the Christmas Special #8702 that gives you the complete body and core support bushing kit complete with new grade 8 bolts to make the car ride like new again. This is a worthy winter project. I can’t stress it enough, the longer you put this project on the back burner, the bigger the risk you have of having some of the body bolts spin on the cage nut. If this happens the project becomes a lot more involved and costly because welding would be needed to reattach a cage nut to the car.

UPDATE ON GM LICENSED GRAND NATIONAL T-SHIRTS –

These new GM licensed Grand National T-shirts have been a good seller for us. Our initial order is due to arrive in the next 3-4 days. We already have a second order placed for them as well. I have submitted some other product ideas to this company and they are submitting various samples to get GM licensed. We expect to have other products available over the winter from this source.

Here is a link to these new shirts on our website.

NON-BUICK PARTS - FOR SALE –

I have several items for sale this first week. In each case the price includes shipping to the basic 48 states. Perhaps you have a relative or a good friend with one of these cars. All these items are extremely nice and priced to sell. Again, Paypal is the preferred method of payment. You must email me direct - [email protected] to purchase or check if item(s) are still available. All these items are bargain priced and extremely nice otherwise I would not bother hauling them out of the junkyard.

C-2 – See photo 4 in 11-07-2018 issue. I have 4 of these Cadillac accessory trunk mats. I have them in the trunk of all our cars and use them in the pole building to keep any leaks from getting on the concrete floor. These trunk mats were a Cadillac option around the late 1980s. The mat is reversible rubber on the one side with the Caddy crest logo and grey cloth material on the other side. The trunk mat measures 33 inches by 36 inches, almost a perfect square. Mat is the perfect size for most trunks to protect your original trunk carpet. They are charcoal grey in color. Each one is almost like new with no stains. The price is just $34.95, which includes shipping to the basic 48 states. These mats are very high quality.

C-4 – For the Subaru Outback, a full set (4) embroidered with the word Outback factory carpet savers that are absolutely mint. Grey black color weave look. They are probably 1990s vintage. The price is just $38.95 for the full set, which includes shipping to the basic 48 states.

C-5 – For any 2001-2004 Honda Civic with the grey/black interior I have a mint original factory passenger embroidered floor mat and a mint one piece rear carpeted factory floor mat. The price is just $29.95, which includes shipping to the basic 48 states.

NOTE - If requested we can supply photos of any item in this section if you are unsure as to whether it will fit your application.

UPDATE ON 1987 BUICK GRAND NATIONAL - FOR SALE –

The buyer is currently arranging transport to pick up the Grand National the end of this month. Car has been fully paid for. Car will be going to Nebraska.

ANOTHER 1987 GRAND NATIONAL FOR SALE -

As of this writing this 1987 Grand National is still available. This example has a great history. I sold it thru O'Neil Buick/GMC back in May of 2000. At that time, it had 26,000 miles on it. It features all original paint, less than 60,000 miles. Very well optioned and has the desirable factory astroroof option.

I just learned of this car so I don't have much info. Car comes with a copy of the original window sticker. Car appears to be 99% stock.

The trunk ID label (SPID) has been signed by Molly twice as the car was at both Reunion events Molly attended for us.

The price is $24,973 however, email Kevin direct at - koneilbuickgmc.com for more information and a special price for any of our customers. Here is a link to this car on their website - https://www.oneilbuickgmc.com/VehicleSearchResults?searchQuery=1987

We actually owned this car twice - first in May of 2000 when I got it from the original owner with 26,000 miles on it. The last owner bought it again from us and Mike O’Neil back in 2005 when it had about 55,000 actual miles. Car has always been owned by collectors.

Remember, as a customer of ours, you would get a special price on this original 1987 Grand National.

HERE IS A GREAT GIFT IDEA FOR CHRISTMAS –

I recently discovered a product at a GMC dealership gift shop. Many GMC dealerships do not have much of a gift shop if they have one at all. While you have many cheaper choices for a portable power bank to charge tablets, smart phones, etc., most are cheap looking plastic ones. The real concern is most that are not UL certified. Being electrical, UL certification is critical. UL certification reduces the risk of fire or explosions related to lithium batteries. Almost anything electrical you buy today carries the UL certification. To have peace of mind, the UL certification is critical for an electrical product to have. I know GM would not offer anything electrical unless it has the UL certification. I know this for sure as a buddy of mine was working on an electrical project and needed GM approval. He was told his product would require a UL certification in order for GM to approve it.

The power bank we offer has that critical UL certification and also looks very elegant - two features many of the cheap ones lack. It is compact in size 2- ¾ inches wide by 3 inches high by only ¾ inches thick. The power bank has a metal outer shell with chrome edges and a grey textured finish front and back. On the front in small print is the word “Denali.” It is GM licensed. The supplier to GM has a limited number of these on hand. Four small lights on the front show you see how much power is available. Capacity is 4000mAh, Input DC 5V/1000mA, output DC 5v/100mA.

It will charge a typical smart phone 2-3 times before needing a charge. The power bank recharges using a USB port.

This certified GM licensed power bank makes a great gift for a spouse or a friend. It is far superior then the plastic ones you find at most stores. Plus, it has the UL (Underwriters Laboratories) certification meaning it has passed all the proper tests required to obtain that certification.

PRICING – The price for one GM licensed power bank UL certified is $41.95, which includes shipping to the basic 48 states by mail. Want to buy more than 1? Add $36 for each additional charger with no additional shipping costs. NOTE - PA residents add 6% sales tax to total. Buy with confidence. To order this power bank call our office direct - 215-766-1611X0 - ask for Christina. Because the supplier has a limited inventory, we have no plans to add to our product line. Makes a unique gift that you can feel confident buying since it has the UL certification. I plan to use several as Christmas gifts. We already have several in stock for immediate delivery with more on order.

See Photo 4 in 10-31-2018 Inner Circle issue for photo of this UL certified GM licensed classic looking power bank. They are in stock for immediate delivery.

REMEMBER THE VIDEO PROFILE THAT WAS DONE LAST YEAR? –

Steve, the producer of that video, is now producing an automotive radio show in the Philadelphia market and is currently looking for sponsorship. Sponsors will receive commercial air time during the program as well as web and video presence. Because it’s the inaugural season of the show, rates are low compared to standard radio rates.

Business owners, particularly those in the Philadelphia region who are looking for a new way to advertise, should contact Steve at - [email protected] check out the website at -www.carsmartsradio.com

They are slated to begin broadcasting at 11am for one hour on 610ESPN radio. That Saturday slot will be the time slot for at least until May, with a few preemptions for football and basketball (Villanova).

The radio station kept the rates the same for Steve even though we’re now going to the larger radio station. This is very exciting!

TIPS AND IDEAS YOU HAVE TRIED -

If there are any tips or ideas you want to share with our readers, email me –[email protected]

TIP FROM KIRBAN –

With winter fast approaching for those of you that reside in the northern climates it’s time to prepare your car for its hibernation period - Full tank of gas, car cover, heated environment, and battery maintainer to keep the battery fully charged. These are the very least things you need to do. A security cat or cats provides the best rodent protection and gives you a companion in your garage or workshop.

While many choices exist for a car cover, the one we sell has a 10-year warranty and makes it a good value. Our car cover is also one of our Christmas Specials with a battery butler, part #8711. To order this, it must be called in to our office on this Christmas Special.

CORES NEEDED -

Here is the information on our credits for cores.

URGENT NEED - Powermaster brake units. The must be complete. We will now issue you a Letter of Credit for $150 for each acceptable core. We currently will not buy any powermaster units outright, only Letter of Credit towards parts.

If you ship to us, the post office is the cheapest method. Pack the item(s) with a note with your name, address and phone number. These are the only 2 items we are currently accepting as cores.

NEW PRODUCTS FROM US –

1984-1987 BUICK REGAL (Including Turbo Regals) -
HOOD STOPPERS (2) AND HOOD STUD BUMPERS (2) SET

In many cases, these will fit older GM cars (1958 and up) that used this same format.

GM used studs that rust over a period of time and the rubber bumper stopper gets hard. A rusted stud makes adjustments difficult. A hard rubber stopper can lead to squeaks when you drive over a rough part of the road.

By making them in stainless, you are assured they will not rust.

Each one comes with a new rubber stopper included.

NOTE - ABOUT LINKS IN THE INNER CIRCLE -

We have heard from a couple people that have had problems with the links in our Inner Circle.

When we check the links, they work fine. However, if you are not able to be directed to the exact website page or internet site, you can "copy" and "paste" the link into the URL in your browser (such as Safari, Firefox, Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, etc.) If it doesn't link in one browser, it may work in another.

Most people having problems are using Internet Explorer. If you are having issues with links, try another browser to see if it works.

You may need to "UPDATE" your browser to be use you are using the current version.

NOTE ABOUT PHOTOS ON THE WEBSITE -

We have heard from a couple people that have viewed the photos on the website. Because these must be low-resolution photos to work on the Inner Circle segments on the website, any photos of text don't appear clear when enlarged. This is a problem when you are trying to see numbers, such as those on the VIN labels or pages from Options booklet. Also, because of photo reproduction and computer screen variations, the colors may not be true to the actual product or photo.

If you would like to have us email you any photo at the higher resolution for viewing, just email us and we will email them to you. Be sure to be specific on which pictures you want to see - Reference Inner Circle date and photo number 1, 2, 3 or 4 - [email protected]

ABOUT OUR EMAILS -

Any inquiries concerning used parts, you must email me direct - [email protected] I will answer you. However, if I fail to answer you within 24 hours, please email us again. Since expanding into used parts, I get a lot of emails and sometimes I may forget your request or may not remember who requested the item.

IN CLOSING – Seems winter has come early for this part of the country. Remember, if you reside in the northern part of the USA, prepare your car for its winter.
