ON THE NEWSFRONT – HEMMINGS MUSCLE MACHINES JANUARY 2019 ISSUE -

I know I have mentioned it in the past, but by far one of the best magazines related to the US muscle cars is Hemming Muscle Machines.

The January 2019 issue has a very detailed 6-page article entitled, “1986-1987 Grand National Buyers Guide.” This article is very detailed with photos. It makes several points that I have mentioned, such as installing the body bushings Buick left out and the importance of braces such as the rear seat brace. These are critical additions for T-Tops optioned Grand Nationals to prevent cracks and stiffen up the suspension.

The photos in the article show a very clean 1987 Grand National that is not entirely stock. In one photo you can see it has the typical non-working power antenna a common problem. It sticks up about 4 inches. It’s a shame that most magazine articles focus only on the Grand National and neglect the T-Types and Turbo-Ts. I realize that values will always be higher for the Grand Nationals, but it would be nice to see the T-Types, Turbo-Ts and Turbo Limiteds included as well in articles.

The article has a Value Chart and what you can expect to pay for a 1986 or a 1987 Grand National. For a 1986, they have a low price of $12,650, average price of $26,200 and $43,000 for a high price. For 1987, they show the exact same three price values. Keep this in mind as prices continue to climb for these cars potential buyers are demanding documentation more than ever before. I get calls almost every week wanting my opinion on various cars for sale. Cars with no documentation or records can be a turn off for potential buyers, unless the car is bargain priced. This is especially true if the car has been modified or has had the engine rebuilt.

I like the one line in the article that says the Grand National outshone its contemporaries in 1986-1987: Camaro, Firebird, Mustang, and even the Corvette. To which I add, not only in values today, but proven to be the quickest of the bunch as well.

Whether you agree or disagree with the stated values, these numbers are what loan companies go by if they lend money for your investment. In that regard, having high values works in your favor.

UNDERSTANDING THE SPID DECAL –

GM first started to use the SPID decal with its various codes with the 1984 GM models. In the case of the G-body models, this decal known as the Service Parts Identification Decal (SPID) was affixed to the inside of the trunk lid.

The location of this decal was not a precise spot!

Beginning with the 2017 GM models, GM switched to a QR label that can be scanned and decoded. This new format can be found on the driver’s side B-pillar. I am not sure if this new format shows all the codes related to the GM vehicle or just the paint code for the vehicle. This is so body shops can quickly determine the correct paint code.

From 1984 and up, depending on the GM model car, it varied as to where it was in the trunk. For pickup trucks, it can usually be found affixed inside the glove box.

I am fairly certain that if you give the local GM dealership the VIN number, they can easily print out all the codes for your GM vehicle, at least for the newer models. I was able to get a print out a few years ago of all the codes related to our 2005 Chevrolet Tahoe. Our Tahoe has virtually every possible option available in 2005.

When the 1984-1987 Turbo Regals were new, GM published a small booklet entitled, “GM Production Options” each year listing the various GM codes. As each new model year came out, a new booklet came out. Dealers usually threw out the older copies. Finding an early GM Production Option booklet is extremely rare.

I have a 1986 copy, which only runs 40 pages. For example, I also have a 2001 GM Production Options booklet and it runs 168 pages. So, you can see how every year from when they started in 1984 has increased the number of various codes related to GM production. The later issues of the GM Production Options booklet makes it more difficult to find the codes pertaining to the 1984-1987 GM car models.

The 1986 GM Production Options booklet is extremely rare to find today. What I have done is incorporated it into a handy booklet and included several pages listing the specific Grand National options T-Type and Turbo-T exterior color codes and trim combinations.

Ironically, the specific code for the GNX does not appear in any of the GM Production Option booklets until around 2001. I have included that specific page as well. That code for the GNX option is T2L on the SPID decal. Why GM did not note this in an earlier GM Production Option booklet, I have no idea.

Of all the labels and decals Buick attached to all the 1984-1987 Turbo Regals, the SPID decal is by far the most important one.

When I was buying these cars, that was a major point I would ask the seller prior to considering any purchase. I can remember buying one T-Type where the owner had replaced the trunk lid. Fortunately, he had saved the original trunk lid. I had that label cut out of the original trunk lid so I could provide it with the car when I sold it.

PHOTO 2 – The photo to the left shows first the smaller October 1986 GM Production Options booklet alongside the March 2001 GM Production Options booklet. The 1986 runs just 40 pages the 2001 is 160 pages. On the right, we show the 5-½ by 8-½ spiral bound booklet we just had printed that covers all the critical codes related to any 1984-1987 Turbo Regal. It runs 60-pages.

The info is slightly enlarged for easy reading. We did a small run of these booklets and are only offering it this one time. Although no booklet can decode all the codes on your SPID decal this will do most of them including all the options. Also, if you have a real GNX the one page verifies the proof with the T2L code. Every GNX owner should have this info especially since most of the parts are now available to clone a GNX.

To order this copy of the GM Productions booklet email me direct [email protected] The price is $18.95, which includes USPS. We only did a limited run. This 60-page booklet is spiral bound. We had the copy enlarged compared to the original GM Production booklets. You must email me direct if you want a copy. Paypal is preferred method of payment.

GM PACKAGING CHANGES OVER THE YEARS –

GM packaging for the Grand National emblem is something I had saved over the years. The Grand National fender and trunk emblem is part number 2551622. Having never worked in a GM dealership parts department I can only guess what sequence these GM parts bags for the Grand National emblem were packaged originally.

PHOTO 3 – I show a total of 5 different GM bags that GM used over the years for the Grand National emblem #2551622. In case you’re wondering in my GM 2001 price book the Grand National emblem list price was $44.60 trade was $33.45 and dealer cost was $26.76 each.

WE4 TURBO-T UPDATE –

I have shown these two Buick Product Information Bulletins before in a previous article. I do recall stating that, if I had to guess, Buick probably made about 200 of the black 1987 Turbo-Ts with the WO2 black-out option before discontinuing that option. This was prior to the introduction of the new WE4. The WE4 would be similar except it would also have black bumpers. The basic appearance would closely resemble a Grand National minus the price tag and added weight.

GM discontinued the black Turbo-T with chrome bumpers 2 days prior to announcing the WE4 to avoid confusion. Since this was back in November of 1986 and prior to the internet, the public was totally unaware of this.

I recently heard from Jim Norton a customer of ours. He was able to check with Vintage Vehicle Services in Oshawa, Ontario, Canada. Jim lives in Canada. He was extremely curious as he has one of the black 1987 Turbo-Ts with the black-out WO2 option and chrome bumpers.

It turns out my guess was very close. According to Vintage Vehicle Services, the total count was 216 produced. His car has an October 21, 1986 production date, which falls about 2 weeks from when production ended for that combination of a black Turbo T with the black-out package WO2 and chrome bumpers.

It’s all about documentation to prove it and, of course, I have the actual Production Information Bulletin from Buick proving that on 11-13-86 you could no longer order a black Turbo-T with the black-out package WO2. The follow-up was the announcement on 11-15-86 of the new WE4 model, which was a black Turbo-T with the black-out package and black bumpers.

This model was marketed as a quicker model over the Grand National.

So, while the real rare car is actually the black Turbo-T with the black-out WO2 option made for just 2 months, it’s the WE4 with the black bumpers that saw far more production that gets the publicity. In the early 1990s I had one of the rare ones that they only made 216 of. Like most owners, back then I had no idea it was as rare as it really is since only 216 were made.

PHOTO 4 – We show both the 11-13-86 Production Information Bulletin where the black exterior was no longer available with the Exterior Sport Package WO2. Next to it is the 11-15-86 Product Information Bulletin announcing the WE4 Turbo-T package, which was all black with the Exterior Sport Package (WO2) and black bumpers. The WE4 had no rear spoiler. It had the aluminum wheels. The catch phrase Buick used was, “The reduction in weight theoretically makes the WE4 Turbo-T faster than a Grand National and for a lower price.”

UPDATE ON THANKSGIVING M&Ms CONTEST -

We heard from our Second Place winner for our Thanksgiving M&Ms contest Stephen Burke from Illinois. He bought his black 1986 T-Type in 1990 and has been a customer of ours since 2001. He literally counted M&Ms to see how many were in a cubic inch and then did some math. It’s only the second time he has entered one of our contests.

Our Christmas M&Ms contest will be posted soon!

SPEAKING OF THE WE4 MODEL –

Watch next week’s Inner Circle. Our supplier for GM licensed banners just got 5 more Turbo Regal ones licensed, one of which is the WE4 model. We now will have 2 different GM licensed banners featuring the rare WE4 models. We also will have one featuring the 1984 and 1986 Grand National. We already have several of each of these new banners in stock. We will have more info and photos next week.

IN SOME WAYS CORVETTE DID SOMETHING SIMILAR TO BUICK –

The year was 1999. Besides the convertible and the hatchback, Corvette came out with a third Corvette model - the fixed roof coupe. Known simply as (FRC), it was stiffer and lighter and therefore quicker than the coupe or the convertible. In 2000, they did another run of the (FRC). I was fortunate enough to own not only a 1999 model FRC, but also had a 2000 FRC. In 2001 that model would become the Z06.

Unlike the Buick world, in the Corvette world you can virtually find out any production number for any model and how many received that specific option.

BREAKING NEWS –

We just received our initial order of the Grand National T-shirts and the shirt quality and printing are great. Pre-orders are shipping out this week.

Remember, these shirts would be great Christmas gifts.

As you read this, we have placed another order for these GM licensed T-shirts.

Here is a link to these T-shirts on our website.

UPDATE ON THE 1986 GRAND NATIONAL HARDTOP FOR PARTS –

The 1986 Grand National that we recently mentioned has been sold. The 1987 Grand National was just picked up last week and is on its way to the new owner in Nebraska. That may represent the first Turbo Regal I have sold to someone in Nebraska.

OUR ANNUAL 2018 CHRISTMAS SPECIALS –

Here is a complete listing of our annual Christmas Specials for 2018. These orders must be called in to our office to get the proper discount and shipping costs. We tried to put related items together as a Package Deal to make your project easier.

I highly recommend the Christmas Special #8702 that gives you the complete body and core support bushing kit complete with new grade 8 bolts to make the car ride like new again. This is a worthy winter project. I can’t stress it enough, the longer you put this project on the back burner, the bigger the risk you have of having some of the body bolts spin on the cage nut. If this happens the project becomes a lot more involved and costly because welding would be needed to reattach a cage nut to the car.

Here is a link to the CHRISTMAS SPECIALS on our website.

UPDATE ON GM LICENSED GRAND NATIONAL T-SHIRTS –

These new GM licensed Grand National T-shirts have arrived. Many of our orders have been filled earlier this week. We just ordered more.

Here is a link to these new shirts on our website.

NON-BUICK PARTS - FOR SALE –

I have several items for sale this first week. In each case the price includes shipping to the basic 48 states. Perhaps you have a relative or a good friend with one of these cars. All these items are extremely nice and priced to sell. Again, Paypal is the preferred method of payment. You must email me direct [email protected] to purchase or check if item(s) are still available. All these items are bargain priced and extremely nice otherwise I would not bother hauling them out of the junkyard.

C-2 – See photo 4 in 11-07-2018 issue. I have 4 of these Cadillac accessory trunk mats. I have them in the trunk of all our cars and use them in the pole building to keep any leaks from getting on the concrete floor. These trunk mats were a Cadillac option around the late 1980s. The mat is reversible rubber on the one side with the Caddy crest logo and grey cloth material on the other side. The trunk mat measures 33 inches by 36 inches, almost a perfect square. Mat is the perfect size for most trunks to protect your original trunk carpet. They are charcoal grey in color. Each one is almost like new with no stains. The price is just $34.95, which includes shipping to the basic 48 states. These mats are very high quality.

C-4 – For the Subaru Outback, a full set (4) embroidered with the word Outback factory carpet savers that are absolutely mint. Grey black color weave look. They are probably 1990s vintage. The price is just $38.95 for the full set, which includes shipping to the basic 48 states.

C-5 – For any 2001-2004 Honda Civic with the grey/black interior I have a mint original factory passenger embroidered floor mat and a mint one piece rear carpeted factory floor mat. The price is just $29.95, which includes shipping to the basic 48 states.

NOTE - If requested we can supply photos of any item in this section if you are unsure as to whether it will fit your application.

ANOTHER 1987 GRAND NATIONAL FOR SALE -

As of this writing this 1987 Grand National is still available. This example has a great history. I sold it thru O'Neil Buick/GMC back in May of 2000. At that time, it had 26,000 miles on it. It features all original paint, less than 60,000 miles. Very well optioned and has the desirable factory astroroof option.

I just learned of this car so I don't have much info. Car comes with a copy of the original window sticker. Car appears to be 99% stock.

The trunk ID label (SPID) has been signed by Molly twice as the car was at both Reunion events Molly attended for us.

The price is $24,973 however, email Kevin direct at - [email protected] for more information and a special price for any of our customers. Here is a link to this car on their website - https://www.oneilbuickgmc.com/VehicleSearchResults?searchQuery=1987

We actually owned this car twice - first in May of 2000 when I got it from the original owner with 26,000 miles on it. The last owner bought it again from us and Mike O’Neil back in 2005 when it had about 55,000 actual miles. Car has always been owned by collectors.

Remember, as a customer of ours, you would get a special price on this original 1987 Grand National.

HERE IS A GREAT GIFT IDEA FOR CHRISTMAS –

I recently discovered a product at a GMC dealership gift shop. Many GMC dealerships do not have much of a gift shop if they have one at all. While you have many cheaper choices for a portable power bank to charge tablets, smart phones, etc., most are cheap looking plastic ones. The real concern is most that are not UL certified. Being electrical,UL certification is critical. UL certification reduces the risk of fire or explosions related to lithium batteries. Almost anything electrical you buy today carries the UL certification. To have peace of mind, the UL certification is critical for an electrical product to have. I know GM would not offer anything electrical unless it has the UL certification. I know this for sure as a buddy of mine was working on an electrical project and needed GM approval. He was told his product would require a UL certification in order for GM to approve it.

The power bank we offer has that critical UL certification and also looks very elegant - two features many of the cheap ones lack. It is compact in size 2- ¾ inches wide by 3 inches high by only ¾ inches thick. The power bank has a metal outer shell with chrome edges and a grey textured finish front and back. On the front in small print is the word “Denali.” It is GM licensed. The supplier to GM has a limited number of these on hand. Four small lights on the front show you see how much power is available. Capacity is 4000mAh, Input DC 5V/1000mA, output DC 5v/100mA.

It will charge a typical smart phone 2-3 times before needing a charge. The power bank recharges using a USB port.

This certified GM licensed power bank makes a great gift for a spouse or a friend. It is far superior then the plastic ones you find at most stores. Plus, it has the UL (Underwriters Laboratories) certification meaning it has passed all the proper tests required to obtain that certification.

PRICING – The price for one GM licensed power bank UL certified is $41.95, which includes shipping to the basic 48 states by mail. Want to buy more than 1? Add $36 for each additional charger with no additional shipping costs. NOTE - PA residents add 6% sales tax to total. Buy with confidence. To order this power bank call our office direct - 215-766-1611X0 - ask for Christina. Because the supplier has a limited inventory, we have no plans to add to our product line. Makes a unique gift that you can feel confident buying since it has the UL certification. I plan to use several as Christmas gifts. We already have several in stock for immediate delivery with more on order.

See Photo 4 in 10-31-2018 Inner Circle issue for photo of this UL certified GM licensed classic looking power bank. They are in stock for immediate delivery.

REMEMBER THE VIDEO PROFILE THAT WAS DONE LAST YEAR? –

Steve, the producer of that video, is now producing an automotive radio show in the Philadelphia market and is currently looking for sponsorship. Sponsors will receive commercial air time during the program as well as web and video presence. Because it’s the inaugural season of the show, rates are low compared to standard radio rates.

Business owners, particularly those in the Philadelphia region who are looking for a new way to advertise, should contact Steve at - [email protected] check out the website at -www.carsmartsradio.com

They are slated to begin broadcasting at 11am for one hour on 610ESPN radio. That Saturday slot will be the time slot for at least until May, with a few preemptions for football and basketball (Villanova).

The radio station kept the rates the same for Steve even though we’re now going to the larger radio station. This is very exciting!

GOOD NEWS - WE ARE ACCEPTING CLASSIFIED ADS -

Good news - We now accept Classified Ads in our weekly Inner Circle emails. Over the years several customers have asked about placing an ad in our weekly Inner Circle.

Here are the options and the costs.

Ads can be from any individual or company. It needs to be automotive related, meaning it does not need be specifically Turbo Regal related. It can be for something for sale or something wanted.

Maximum number of words is 125 words, which is about 7 to 9 lines of copy. No photos. You can list a website. We recommend you state your name, phone number or email, a price, and your location in your ad.

The cost for 2 consecutive weeks is $25. The cost for 4 consecutive weeks is $40. You save $10 with the 4-week plan. No changes can be made to your existing running ad. You can only run one ad at any given time. We will have a code system at the end of your ad, so we will know what week number your ad is to run - 2 or 4 weeks.

It can be an ad for something for sale or an ad for something you are looking for.

We have never missed a single week since we started the Inner Circle email format in 2009. It’s something I enjoy doing and I just always seem to have enough material to write about.

Our weekly Inner Circle reaches over 3,300 members every Wednesday direct to their inbox. The Inner Circle also appears every Wednesday on our website with the related photos. Your ad would be visible to both groups of readers. So, the exposure to your ad is well over 3,200 potential buyers.

Ads submitted properly by the previous Sunday would appear that next Wednesday in the weekly Inner Circle. Ads must be submitted by email to - [email protected]

Payment by credit card must be done by phone to our office 215-766-1611 x 0.

NOTE - IF YOU ARE NOT ABLE TO SEE THE BUICK RARE PARTS SECTION -

If you are not able to see the Buick Rare Parts section at the end of this Inner Circle, it is because you are not an Inner Circle member, but instead are reading this on the website. You must subscribe to see the Rare Parts section each week. It would go directly to your inbox every Wednesday afternoon. It is FREE, probably one reason why nobody complains about what I write about. Simply email - [email protected] to get on our weekly Inner Circle email.

The Buick Rare Parts section is only viewed by those that subscribe. Subscription is free, so complaints on what I write are nonexistent!

TIPS AND IDEAS YOU HAVE TRIED -

If there are any tips or ideas you want to share with our readers, email me –[email protected]

TIP FROM KIRBAN –

Here is a word of advice. If you own a 1986 or 1987 Turbo Regal, it’s best to always buy plug wires that are custom cut the proper lengths. Avoid running the plug wires over the top of the upper plenum. Those sharp edges over a period of time can short out the plug wires.

CORES NEEDED -

Here is the information on our credits for cores.

URGENT NEED - Powermaster brake units. The must be complete. We will now issue you a Letter of Credit for $150 for each acceptable core. We currently will not buy any powermaster units outright, only Letter of Credit towards parts.

If you ship to us, the post office is the cheapest method. Pack the item(s) with a note with your name, address and phone number. These are the only 2 items we are currently accepting as cores.

NEW PRODUCTS FROM US –

1984-1987 BUICK REGAL (Including Turbo Regals) -
HOOD STOPPERS (2) AND HOOD STUD BUMPERS (2) SET

In many cases, these will fit older GM cars (1958 and up) that used this same format.

GM used studs that rust over a period of time and the rubber bumper stopper gets hard. A rusted stud makes adjustments difficult. A hard rubber stopper can lead to squeaks when you drive over a rough part of the road.

By making them in stainless, you are assured they will not rust.

Each one comes with a new rubber stopper included.

NOTE - ABOUT LINKS IN THE INNER CIRCLE -

We have heard from a couple people that have had problems with the links in our Inner Circle.

When we check the links, they work fine. However, if you are not able to be directed to the exact website page or internet site, you can "copy" and "paste" the link into the URL in your browser (such as Safari, Firefox, Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, etc.) If it doesn't link in one browser, it may work in another.

Most people having problems are using Internet Explorer. If you are having issues with links, try another browser to see if it works.

You may need to "UPDATE" your browser to be use you are using the current version.

NOTE ABOUT PHOTOS ON THE WEBSITE -

We have heard from a couple people that have viewed the photos on the website. Because these must be low-resolution photos to work on the Inner Circle segments on the website, any photos of text don't appear clear when enlarged. This is a problem when you are trying to see numbers, such as those on the VIN labels or pages from Options booklet. Also, because of photo reproduction and computer screen variations, the colors may not be true to the actual product or photo.

If you would like to have us email you any photo at the higher resolution for viewing, just email us and we will email them to you. Be sure to be specific on which pictures you want to see - Reference Inner Circle date and photo number 1, 2, 3 or 4 - [email protected]

ABOUT OUR EMAILS -

Any inquiries concerning used parts, you must email me direct - [email protected] I will answer you. However, if I fail to answer you within 24 hours, please email us again. Since expanding into used parts, I get a lot of emails and sometimes I may forget your request or may not remember who requested the item.
