CHRISTMAS M&Ms CONTEST –
This year the M&Ms contest is slightly different. You have to have the closest guess under the actual count combining the TWO containers shown in Photo 1.
Here are the rules: Contest is open to all our customers except those connected to the Turbo Regal business. The deadline is this coming Saturday, December 15th, 9 pm eastern time. In case of a tie, the earliest email is the winner. You can only submit one guess. Closest under actual total count of the total number of M&Ms in the two containers pictured is the First Place winner.
The winners will be announced the following Wednesday in the weekly Inner Circle. The First Place winner gets both containers, the cookies that came in both containers originally, a copy of the Kirban Side of the Road book, a Denali phone charger, and an autographed Don Garlits connecting rod from his top fuel dragster dated 2003.
The Second Place winner gets a Don Garlits autographed connecting rod from his top fuel dragster dated 2003.
Don Garlits retired from Top Fuel racing in 2003 and I bought all his connecting rods and had him sign them. I only have a very few left. Even if you are not a Mopar fan, you realize how valuable something like this is for a collector.
PHOTO 1 – We show both containers. Here are some of the clues for those of you that are good in math and engineering. (I am not part of that group!) The metal red oval container is about 5-1/2 inches tall and 2-½ inches deep. The Oreo cookie container is about ¾ inches tall with a diameter of about 7 inches.

HERE IS A VERY RARE ITEM –
I recently came across this rare item from our 2002 October Open House – a 2002 Open House ticket autographed by Molly. This would be the first one of two Open House events that was attended by Molly at our Plumsteadville, PA location. This was a huge event with a banquet Saturday night at the nearby Warrington Country Club. The year 2002 also marked the end of the monthly printed Grand News. We would start 2003 with the email format, which has come out every week since 2003 except during the Christmas holidays. This seems so long ago.
Also, according to my Grand News issue back then, I sold 19 Turbo Regals in 2002, all of which had fewer than 50,000 miles on them. Many of the 19 had less than 25,000 miles on them. The high end for price that year was $19,500 and $19,600 for the Grand Nationals that we sold. I even stated back then that prices are creeping up and I predicted in 2003 prices would break the $20 grand mark. Fast forward to 2019 and I predict some examples will do double that.

MORE ABOUT TURBO REGAL VALUES –
With values of the Turbo Regals (notably the 1986 and 1987 Grand Nationals) creeping up, I wanted to look back and what price they listed for sale in my books when they were virtually just a few years old. If you own a 1986-1987 T-Type or Turbo-T, you are basically riding the coattails of the values associated with the Grand Nationals.
I have an April 1990 N.A.D.A. Official Used Car Guide for the Eastern Region. For the 1986 T-Type they show a retail value of $7,950. For the 1986 Grand National they show retail value of $11,650. Under options they put a $350 value on T-Tops and for the power sunroof only $275. I think most readers today would agree with me that the power sunroof (or astroroof as it is sometimes called) would add greater value than T-Tops does.
The 1987 the Turbo-T comes in at $9,675 and the 1987 Grand National comes in at $13,325. Once again, the T-Tops option adds greater value at $425 versus just $300 for the sunroof or astroroof option. A comparable 1986 Monte Carlo SS comes in at just $8,175 and a 1987 Monte Carlo SS comes in at $9,825. They also made a 1988 Monte Carlo SS, which had a retail value of $11,800.
What is interesting is how the 1987 Corvette stacks up back in April 1990. The hatchback lists for $19,950 and the convertible a whopping $23,525. Jump forward to present day and the numbers are vastly reversed between the comparable 1986 and 1987 Corvette and the 1986-1987 Grand National. As for the Monte Carlo SS models 1986 and 1987, it is a major stretch that they would fetch the value shown back in 1990 today for the most part.
Being these were fairly new used cars back then, the prices were based on what the retail price was when they were new. Thus the Corvettes in 1986 and 1987 were a lot more than the Turbo Regals and Monte Carlo models.
The Turbo Regal models (most notably the Grand National) in the GM family in the late 1980s are truly the winners in real money and continues to be so. This is even with its visible short comings such as poor body fit, questionable paint, and brakes that make you hold your breath when you apply them. Good thing Buick didn’t hire me to write the catch phrases for the promotion of the Grand Nationals!

IN CASE YOU’RE WONDERING –
The lowly Yugo first appeared in 1986 and was last made in 1988. Their retail value for those years in1990 was all under $2,000. I apologize if I offend any Yugo owners.
PATINA AND TURBO REGALS –
Patina is a word I seldom heard years ago when the U.S. muscle car era began. Another word for patina would be “neglected” in my opinion as patina becomes visible due to age, exposure to the elements, and basic neglect. You may agree or disagree with me, but that is my description of patina.
In the February 2019 issue of Car Craft, they actually have an article on how to make paint have that patina look. The article goes on to say you can scratch it have bubbles in the paint all of which adds the weathered look! In other words, basically reproduce the somewhat poor paint job Buick did originally on most of the Grand Nationals.
I can’t imagine a body shop in the restoration business wanting to go this route. It’s true, restoration can be a challenge. I did it once on a major scale with our 1964 GTO that I found that had been sitting many years in the woods. Just a shell, but basically rust free. Being in the business of GTOs way back then, I had the time and ability to gather the parts I would need to assemble the car inside and out. A project I would never do again to that extend. I was younger then.
BY THE NUMBERS –
When I was researching the information for the 2002 Open House, I discovered that the year 2002 was the very last year for the monthly printed “Grand News.” Beginning in 2003, we switched to the weekly email format. That means starting next month will be our 16th year. Long-time subscribers have received about 800 weekly Inner Circles. That is something that no other company has duplicated in all these years.

In Nebraska, this woman elementary school principle has actually banned candy canes in the school. Here is her reasoning. The candy cane is in the shape of the letter J, which is for “Jesus.”
Fortunately, those in power above her have placed her on leave. Makes you wonder what word she would have substituted for the word Christmas since Christ is part of the word? What’s next Easter? Now she has some vacation time to think up her next move.
CLINT EASTWOOD – THE MULE –
The latest offering by Clint Eastwood opens this weekend entitled, “The Mule.” It is inspired by a true story where the main character is 90 years old. For Clint that is not much of a stretch to portray a 90-year-old man since he is now 88 years young. I have probably seen every movie that Clint has been in - either in front of the camera or behind it. This includes as a kid watching him on Rawhide as Rowdy Yates in black and white on TV!
You can probably count on one hand the number of movies he has appeared in where he didn’t kill someone!

C-2 – See photo 4 in 11-07-2018 issue. I have 4 of these Cadillac accessory trunk mats. I have them in the trunk of all our cars and use them in the pole building to keep any leaks from getting on the concrete floor. These trunk mats were a Cadillac option around the late 1980s. The mat is reversible rubber on the one side with the Caddy crest logo and grey cloth material on the other side. The trunk mat measures 33 inches by 36 inches, almost a perfect square. Mat is the perfect size for most trunks to protect your original trunk carpet. They are charcoal grey in color. Each one is almost like new with no stains. The price is just $34.95, which includes shipping to the basic 48 states. These mats are very high quality.
C-4 – For the Subaru Outback, a full set (4) embroidered with the word Outback factory carpet savers that are absolutely mint. Grey black color weave look. They are probably 1990s vintage. The price is just $38.95 for the full set, which includes shipping to the basic 48 states.

UPDATE ON ANOTHER 1987 GRAND NATIONAL FOR SALE -
As of this writing this 1987 Grand National is still available. This example has a great history. I sold it thru O'Neil Buick/GMC back in May of 2000. At that time, it had 26,000 miles on it. It features all original paint, less than 60,000 miles. Very well optioned and has the desirable factory astroroof option. Car comes with a copy of the original window sticker. Car appears to be 99% stock.
The trunk ID label (SPID) has been signed by Molly twice as the car was at both Reunion events Molly attended in 2002 and 2007 for us.

We actually owned this car twice - first in May of 2000 when I got it from the original owner with 26,000 miles on it. The last owner bought it again from us and Mike O’Neil back in 2005 when it had about 55,000 actual miles. Car has always been owned by collectors.
Remember, as a customer of ours, you would get a special price on this original 1987 Grand National.
I recently went down to the dealership to further check this car out. The exhaust system is a Pypes system which looks brand new even has the stickers on it. With the car goes a 3-ring binder of receipts and information regarding Grand Nationals. It is probably 50-60 pages worth of material and includes the original window sticker.
The car has zero paint work 100% original with no molding down the side. This is a very solid example that has been garaged since new. It has almost every option including twilight sentinel. It has one of the later early 1990s AC Delco satin black am/fm CD players in the dash, which looks factory. That has a value of $350 or more.
I test drove the car and it runs out super tight and extremely fast. I was impressed with how good this car runs. Mileage is almost at 60,000 miles. Here is a fine example that is 90% stock featuring 100% original paint, with the factory astroroof. Plus all the documentation back to when it was purchased new. Plus it was one of my cars I bought and sold. This is also one of only about 200 that are signed by Molly. Come Spring you know the values will only increase.
HERE IS A GREAT GIFT IDEA FOR CHRISTMAS –
I recently discovered a product at a GMC dealership gift shop. Many GMC dealerships do not have much of a gift shop if they have one at all. While you have many cheaper choices for a portable power bank to charge tablets, smart phones, etc., most are cheap looking plastic ones. The real concern is most that are not UL certified. Being electrical, UL certification is critical. UL certification reduces the risk of fire or explosions related to lithium batteries. Almost anything electrical you buy today carries the UL certification. To have peace of mind, the UL certification is critical for an electrical product to have. I know GM would not offer anything electrical unless it has the UL certification. I know this for sure as a buddy of mine was working on an electrical project and needed GM approval. He was told his product would require a UL certification in order for GM to approve it.

REMEMBER THE VIDEO PROFILE THAT WAS DONE LAST YEAR? –

Here are the options and the costs.
Ads can be from any individual or company. It needs to be automotive related, meaning it does not need be specifically Turbo Regal related. It can be for something for sale or something wanted.
Maximum number of words is 125 words, which is about 7 to 9 lines of copy. No photos. You can list a website. We recommend you state your name, phone number or email, a price, and your location in your ad.
The cost for 2 consecutive weeks is $25. The cost for 4 consecutive weeks is $40. You save $10 with the 4-week plan. No changes can be made to your existing running ad. You can only run one ad at any given time. We will have a code system at the end of your ad, so we will know what week number your ad is to run - 2 or 4 weeks.
It can be an ad for something for sale or an ad for something you are looking for.
We have never missed a single week since we started the Inner Circle email format in 2009. It’s something I enjoy doing and I just always seem to have enough material to write about.

TIP FROM KIRBAN –
Here is a word of advice. If you own a 1986 or 1987 Turbo Regal, it’s best to always buy plug wires that are custom cut the proper lengths. Avoid running the plug wires over the top of the upper plenum. Those sharp edges over a period of time can short out the plug wires.

1984-1987 BUICK REGAL (Including Turbo Regals) -

In many cases, these will fit older GM cars (1958 and up) that used this same format.
GM used studs that rust over a period of time and the rubber bumper stopper gets hard. A rusted stud makes adjustments difficult. A hard rubber stopper can lead to squeaks when you drive over a rough part of the road.

CHRISTMAS M&Ms CONTEST –
This year the M&Ms contest is slightly different. You have to have the closest guess under the actual count combining the TWO containers shown in Photo 1.
Here are the rules: Contest is open to all our customers except those connected to the Turbo Regal business. The deadline is this coming Saturday, December 15th, 9 pm eastern time. In case of a tie, the earliest email is the winner. You can only submit one guess. Closest under actual total count of the total number of M&Ms in the two containers pictured is the First Place winner.
The winners will be announced the following Wednesday in the weekly Inner Circle. The First Place winner gets both containers, the cookies that came in both containers originally, a copy of the Kirban Side of the Road book, a Denali phone charger, and an autographed Don Garlits connecting rod from his top fuel dragster dated 2003.
The Second Place winner gets a Don Garlits autographed connecting rod from his top fuel dragster dated 2003.
Don Garlits retired from Top Fuel racing in 2003 and I bought all his connecting rods and had him sign them. I only have a very few left. Even if you are not a Mopar fan, you realize how valuable something like this is for a collector.
PHOTO 1 – We show both containers. Here are some of the clues for those of you that are good in math and engineering. (I am not part of that group!) The metal red oval container is about 5-1/2 inches tall and 2-½ inches deep. The Oreo cookie container is about ¾ inches tall with a diameter of about 7 inches.

HERE IS A VERY RARE ITEM –
I recently came across this rare item from our 2002 October Open House – a 2002 Open House ticket autographed by Molly. This would be the first one of two Open House events that was attended by Molly at our Plumsteadville, PA location. This was a huge event with a banquet Saturday night at the nearby Warrington Country Club. The year 2002 also marked the end of the monthly printed Grand News. We would start 2003 with the email format, which has come out every week since 2003 except during the Christmas holidays. This seems so long ago.
Also, according to my Grand News issue back then, I sold 19 Turbo Regals in 2002, all of which had fewer than 50,000 miles on them. Many of the 19 had less than 25,000 miles on them. The high end for price that year was $19,500 and $19,600 for the Grand Nationals that we sold. I even stated back then that prices are creeping up and I predicted in 2003 prices would break the $20 grand mark. Fast forward to 2019 and I predict some examples will do double that.

MORE ABOUT TURBO REGAL VALUES –
With values of the Turbo Regals (notably the 1986 and 1987 Grand Nationals) creeping up, I wanted to look back and what price they listed for sale in my books when they were virtually just a few years old. If you own a 1986-1987 T-Type or Turbo-T, you are basically riding the coattails of the values associated with the Grand Nationals.
I have an April 1990 N.A.D.A. Official Used Car Guide for the Eastern Region. For the 1986 T-Type they show a retail value of $7,950. For the 1986 Grand National they show retail value of $11,650. Under options they put a $350 value on T-Tops and for the power sunroof only $275. I think most readers today would agree with me that the power sunroof (or astroroof as it is sometimes called) would add greater value than T-Tops does.
The 1987 the Turbo-T comes in at $9,675 and the 1987 Grand National comes in at $13,325. Once again, the T-Tops option adds greater value at $425 versus just $300 for the sunroof or astroroof option. A comparable 1986 Monte Carlo SS comes in at just $8,175 and a 1987 Monte Carlo SS comes in at $9,825. They also made a 1988 Monte Carlo SS, which had a retail value of $11,800.
What is interesting is how the 1987 Corvette stacks up back in April 1990. The hatchback lists for $19,950 and the convertible a whopping $23,525. Jump forward to present day and the numbers are vastly reversed between the comparable 1986 and 1987 Corvette and the 1986-1987 Grand National. As for the Monte Carlo SS models 1986 and 1987, it is a major stretch that they would fetch the value shown back in 1990 today for the most part.
Being these were fairly new used cars back then, the prices were based on what the retail price was when they were new. Thus the Corvettes in 1986 and 1987 were a lot more than the Turbo Regals and Monte Carlo models.
The Turbo Regal models (most notably the Grand National) in the GM family in the late 1980s are truly the winners in real money and continues to be so. This is even with its visible short comings such as poor body fit, questionable paint, and brakes that make you hold your breath when you apply them. Good thing Buick didn’t hire me to write the catch phrases for the promotion of the Grand Nationals!

IN CASE YOU’RE WONDERING –
The lowly Yugo first appeared in 1986 and was last made in 1988. Their retail value for those years in1990 was all under $2,000. I apologize if I offend any Yugo owners.
PATINA AND TURBO REGALS –
Patina is a word I seldom heard years ago when the U.S. muscle car era began. Another word for patina would be “neglected” in my opinion as patina becomes visible due to age, exposure to the elements, and basic neglect. You may agree or disagree with me, but that is my description of patina.
In the February 2019 issue of Car Craft, they actually have an article on how to make paint have that patina look. The article goes on to say you can scratch it have bubbles in the paint all of which adds the weathered look! In other words, basically reproduce the somewhat poor paint job Buick did originally on most of the Grand Nationals.
I can’t imagine a body shop in the restoration business wanting to go this route. It’s true, restoration can be a challenge. I did it once on a major scale with our 1964 GTO that I found that had been sitting many years in the woods. Just a shell, but basically rust free. Being in the business of GTOs way back then, I had the time and ability to gather the parts I would need to assemble the car inside and out. A project I would never do again to that extend. I was younger then.
BY THE NUMBERS –
When I was researching the information for the 2002 Open House, I discovered that the year 2002 was the very last year for the monthly printed “Grand News.” Beginning in 2003, we switched to the weekly email format. That means starting next month will be our 16th year. Long-time subscribers have received about 800 weekly Inner Circles. That is something that no other company has duplicated in all these years.

ELEMENTARY SCHOOL PRINCIPLE GOES TO THE EXTREME –
In Nebraska, this woman elementary school principle has actually banned candy canes in the school. Here is her reasoning. The candy cane is in the shape of the letter J, which is for “Jesus.”
Fortunately, those in power above her have placed her on leave. Makes you wonder what word she would have substituted for the word Christmas since Christ is part of the word? What’s next Easter? Now she has some vacation time to think up her next move.
CLINT EASTWOOD – THE MULE –
The latest offering by Clint Eastwood opens this weekend entitled, “The Mule.” It is inspired by a true story where the main character is 90 years old. For Clint that is not much of a stretch to portray a 90-year-old man since he is now 88 years young. I have probably seen every movie that Clint has been in - either in front of the camera or behind it. This includes as a kid watching him on Rawhide as Rowdy Yates in black and white on TV!
You can probably count on one hand the number of movies he has appeared in where he didn’t kill someone!

C-2 – See photo 4 in 11-07-2018 issue. I have 4 of these Cadillac accessory trunk mats. I have them in the trunk of all our cars and use them in the pole building to keep any leaks from getting on the concrete floor. These trunk mats were a Cadillac option around the late 1980s. The mat is reversible rubber on the one side with the Caddy crest logo and grey cloth material on the other side. The trunk mat measures 33 inches by 36 inches, almost a perfect square. Mat is the perfect size for most trunks to protect your original trunk carpet. They are charcoal grey in color. Each one is almost like new with no stains. The price is just $34.95, which includes shipping to the basic 48 states. These mats are very high quality.

UPDATE ON ANOTHER 1987 GRAND NATIONAL FOR SALE -
As of this writing this 1987 Grand National is still available. This example has a great history. I sold it thru O'Neil Buick/GMC back in May of 2000. At that time, it had 26,000 miles on it. It features all original paint, less than 60,000 miles. Very well optioned and has the desirable factory astroroof option. Car comes with a copy of the original window sticker. Car appears to be 99% stock.
The trunk ID label (SPID) has been signed by Molly twice as the car was at both Reunion events Molly attended in 2002 and 2007 for us.

We actually owned this car twice - first in May of 2000 when I got it from the original owner with 26,000 miles on it. The last owner bought it again from us and Mike O’Neil back in 2005 when it had about 55,000 actual miles. Car has always been owned by collectors.
Remember, as a customer of ours, you would get a special price on this original 1987 Grand National.
I recently went down to the dealership to further check this car out. The exhaust system is a Pypes system which looks brand new even has the stickers on it. With the car goes a 3-ring binder of receipts and information regarding Grand Nationals. It is probably 50-60 pages worth of material and includes the original window sticker.
The car has zero paint work 100% original with no molding down the side. This is a very solid example that has been garaged since new. It has almost every option including twilight sentinel. It has one of the later early 1990s AC Delco satin black am/fm CD players in the dash, which looks factory. That has a value of $350 or more.
I test drove the car and it runs out super tight and extremely fast. I was impressed with how good this car runs. Mileage is almost at 60,000 miles. Here is a fine example that is 90% stock featuring 100% original paint, with the factory astroroof. Plus all the documentation back to when it was purchased new. Plus it was one of my cars I bought and sold. This is also one of only about 200 that are signed by Molly. Come Spring you know the values will only increase.
HERE IS A GREAT GIFT IDEA FOR CHRISTMAS –
I recently discovered a product at a GMC dealership gift shop. Many GMC dealerships do not have much of a gift shop if they have one at all. While you have many cheaper choices for a portable power bank to charge tablets, smart phones, etc., most are cheap looking plastic ones. The real concern is most that are not UL certified. Being electrical, UL certification is critical. UL certification reduces the risk of fire or explosions related to lithium batteries. Almost anything electrical you buy today carries the UL certification. To have peace of mind, the UL certification is critical for an electrical product to have. I know GM would not offer anything electrical unless it has the UL certification. I know this for sure as a buddy of mine was working on an electrical project and needed GM approval. He was told his product would require a UL certification in order for GM to approve it.
The power bank we offer has that critical UL certification and also looks very elegant - two features many of the cheap ones lack. It is compact in size 2-¾ inches wide by 3 inches high by only ¾ inches thick. The power bank has a metal outer shell with chrome edges and a grey textured finish front and back. On the front in small print is the word “Denali.” It is GM licensed. The supplier to GM has a limited number of these on hand. Four small lights on the front show you see how much power is available. Capacity is 4000mAh, Input DC 5V/1000mA, output DC 5v/100mA.
It will charge a typical smart phone 2-3 times before needing a charge. The power bank recharges using a USB port.

REMEMBER THE VIDEO PROFILE THAT WAS DONE LAST YEAR? –

Good news - We now accept Classified Ads in our weekly Inner Circle emails. Over the years several customers have asked about placing an ad in our weekly Inner Circle.
Here are the options and the costs.
Ads can be from any individual or company. It needs to be automotive related, meaning it does not need be specifically Turbo Regal related. It can be for something for sale or something wanted.
Maximum number of words is 125 words, which is about 7 to 9 lines of copy. No photos. You can list a website. We recommend you state your name, phone number or email, a price, and your location in your ad.
The cost for 2 consecutive weeks is $25. The cost for 4 consecutive weeks is $40. You save $10 with the 4-week plan. No changes can be made to your existing running ad. You can only run one ad at any given time. We will have a code system at the end of your ad, so we will know what week number your ad is to run - 2 or 4 weeks.
It can be an ad for something for sale or an ad for something you are looking for.
We have never missed a single week since we started the Inner Circle email format in 2009. It’s something I enjoy doing and I just always seem to have enough material to write about.

TIP FROM KIRBAN –
Here is a word of advice. If you own a 1986 or 1987 Turbo Regal, it’s best to always buy plug wires that are custom cut the proper lengths. Avoid running the plug wires over the top of the upper plenum. Those sharp edges over a period of time can short out the plug wires.

1984-1987 BUICK REGAL (Including Turbo Regals) -

GM used studs that rust over a period of time and the rubber bumper stopper gets hard. A rusted stud makes adjustments difficult. A hard rubber stopper can lead to squeaks when you drive over a rough part of the road.

We have heard from a couple people that have viewed the photos on the website. Because these must be low-resolution photos to work on the Inner Circle segments on the website, any photos of text don't appear clear when enlarged. This is a problem when you are trying to see numbers, such as those on the VIN labels or pages from Options booklet. Also, because of photo reproduction and computer screen variations, the colors may not be true to the actual product or photo.
