Greetings Turbo Regal Inner Circle Members 12-14-2016 -

ANNUAL CHRISTMAS M&Ms CONTEST -

The M&Ms are counted for our Annual Christmas contest. The contest starts now.

Here are the rules: The contest is open to everyone except those connected with any of the various Turbo Regal companies. You get one guess only. That single guess must be emailed to me [email protected] Please put your contest guess in the Reference Line heading of your email.

Closest guess UNDER actual count is the First Place winner. Next closest gets Second Place. The contest ends this Saturday night, 6 pm eastern time, December 17th, 2016. The winners will be announced the following week. The prizes will be sent in time for Christmas.

The First Place winner gets the Christmas container filled with M&Ms, plus a $75 Kirban Performance Products Gift Certificate to spend against any of our website items. First Place winner will also receive a very unique custom-made gift. We will show this actual custom-made gift in next week’s Inner Circle. The Second Place winner gets the same custom-made gift, plus a $50 Kirban Performance Products Gift Certificate to spend against any of our website items.

Good luck players. In case of a tie, the earliest email will be declared the winner.

PHOTO 1 - Here is a photo showing the Christmas jar filled the red and green Christmas M&Ms. I show a 12 inch ruler in the photo to help you determine the actual size of the container. That ruler is your only clue.

ANOTHER GREAT FIND -

Here is another great find we just made last week. Once again we bought all they had, which was 10.

We are nowhere near the biggest Turbo Regal supplier, but we do have a lot of long-time connections in the business. One company we deal with made these 10 of the eight-hole Turbo Regal under-the-hood pads a while ago. This is the same material and the same pattern as the original pad. Even has the indention where the word “TURBOCHARGED” would go. These 10 hood pads do NOT have any wording on them and are the eight-hole format. We have a very good price on them. I expect these to sell out quickly, perhaps before the end of this week. If you want to order one, you must call and personally talk to Christina - 215-766-1611 x 0.

This company has made no commitment to make them and, from what I am told, may not have the mold anymore. Again, I don’t know the complete story. All I know is I own all 10 that they had available.

PHOTO 2 - The photo on the left is an original nine-hole hood pad. The photo on the right shows this brand new eight-hole hood pad. You can clearly see the indention where the word “TURBOCHARGED” would go. It is also notched, like the original, in the top center. Again, these are brand new. Any original-style hood pad brand new is extremely hard to find today, just like the original pallex black and grey seat material - yet we have discovered both of these items almost at the same time!

PRICING FOR THE 10 AVAILABLE EIGHT-HOLE HOOD PADS -

The price for the eight-hole hood pad is just $299.95 each plus $25 shipping by UPS ground to any of the basic 48 states. Keep in mind, these are oversized so at $25 shipping, we are absorbing part of the shipping costs.

You can go on ebay and end up paying $500 or more for the various hood pads, and hope they take equally good care in packing it properly for shipping. I am sure someone has a pattern or stencil so the wording could be applied to make it look correct.

Don’t be the 11th caller, as you would lose out. Call Christina direct - 215-766-1611 x 0 - between 9 am and 4:30 pm eastern time any week day. No email, you must talk to her personally to be assured your order is honored.

A LOOK BACK ON THE GM T-TOP OPTION -

Most of our readers know my feelings about T-Tops. Of the 300-plus 1986-1987 Turbo Regals we bought and sold, the number of cars we have sold with T-Tops is 9. We sold 14 cars with the rare astroroof option. Again, my notes may not be exact on these roof options, but they are pretty close to the real numbers. I basically avoided Turbo Regals with T-Tops to eliminate the issues that T-Tops can cause.

Also, what some of my readers may not realize is that some Buick dealers had aftermarket T-Tops installed on Grand Nationals to increase their profit margins. Also in some cases, customers may have requested that T-Tops be installed. A car like this can quickly be verified by checking the codes on the trunk SPID label. Or, if you’re sharp, a visual look at the actual T-Tops. Aftermarket ones generally had a shorter top, so the front area above the windshield was wider on those vehicles. Inside the car, of course, the trim around the actual Tops was not factory. A car like this would be one to avoid unless you have a donor car with a solid roof you can cut off! Again, this is my opinion.

It’s ironic, that the company probably most responsible for T-Tops in GM cars is one I know a lot about. That company is Hurst. When they first came out with their T-Tops versions in the 1970s, they called it the “Hurst/Hatch.” In the late 1970s this option as very popular in the F-Body GM cars. The timing was perfect. Hurst was losing sales in the 1970s as performance cars not being produced, so shifter sales declined immensely.

Believe it or not, Hurst actually printed a 23-page instruction booklet on installing Hurst/Hatches on your GM car. This was not a project for the novice to attempt on a Saturday afternoon with the idea that by dinner time the project would be completed! It even says on the cover in part it is vital and necessary to completely comprehend the information and directions contained in this manual to achieve a successful installation. (In other words, always measure twice before cutting once!) This was way before YouTube and videos. By page 9 of this 23-page booklet you have the air chisel in your hand and you’re starting to make the initial cut in your roof! This may be time to take a break and rethink this project before making that initial cut with the air chisel!

PHOTO 3 - The photo to the left shows the actual cover of this 23-page instruction manual from Hurst. The photo on the right shows page 9. It shows how to take the air chisel to the roof and pray you marked it properly! What is almost as interesting is the fact that nowhere in the 23-page booklet does it say anything about performing a water test with your garden hose to see how successful or unsuccessful your Hurst/Hatch roof install project was! Nor does it state anywhere how much time this project should take. It does say that besides normal mechanic tools, you need to have an air chisel and a sabre saw.

PHOTO 4 - We show two of the original flyers on the Hurst/Hatch from the mid-1970s. These were also a factory option from GM on all four car lines - Buick, Chevrolet, Oldsmobile, and of course Pontiac. Ironically, with the Hurst 4-speed shifter, Chevrolet was the only GM car model not to get on board with the Hurst shifter but instead stuck with the Muncie shifter. I have a very extensive library of information on Hurst and have spoken at several national car club events on Hurst.

THE BACKGROUND ON THE LAST 47 GNXs BUILT -

The other day we heard from Paul Vilser who provided me with information on how the last 47 GNXs were distributed.

A few years back at the BPG Grand National Reunion in Columbus, Ohio they had several speakers that worked at ASC on the GNX project. They explained that there was a program where any Buick dealership that got a top review would be awarded a GNX to sell. That is the reason given to produce the extra 47 units.

At some point, the last one built slipped by the top brass and GNX #547 ended up in private hands, as we all know. Now you have the background.

By the way, GNX 547 has the VIN number of HP453619. I wonder if any of my readers has a 1987 Turbo Regal that falls close to this GNX VIN number. Actual VIN is the six digits after the HP code of the 17 digit VIN number.

THE NEXT CONTEST STARTS NEXT WEEK -

Our next contest will be a triple deal. It will involve three vehicles from the upcoming Mecum Florida auction. Of course, one vehicle will be GNX #547.

Watch for contest rules next week! You could be a big winner!

UPDATE ON ORIGINAL BLACK AND GREY PALLEX SEAT MATERIAL -

I now own all the grey pallex material that this source had available. The one section of grey pallex I have is 9 full yards uncut.

I also made a deal for all the black pallex material from this source. It is believed to be between 12 and 15 yards total. I did get one yard in the other day, which I sold in minutes. It is the real stuff. You would be amazed at just how black this original black pallex material is - because of no sun exposure! Because it is black, it is next to impossible to read the words and date on the back, but it is the real stuff! I can’t price the black pallex material until I see how it comes. It could be several pieces. But it’s only about 12 to 15 yards total, which is not much.

If you want any black pallex material you have to email me - [email protected] - and put how many yards you want in your email and I will see if I can honor your request. Keep in mind, I may not get the black pallex material for a while because of the holidays, etc.

BREAKING NEWS COMING SOON -

We will soon have brand-new AC Delco AC Accumulator/Drier with O-rings in the AC Delco box! These will be powder-coated black so they look original, unlike the ones other companies now offer. We are having them powder-coated black. Watch for pricing soon!

TIPS AND IDEAS YOU HAVE TRIED -

If you have a tip or a discovery that you found that works on your Turbo Regal, drop us an email giving us the details so we can pass the info on to our readers. Remember, even with my knowledge, I don’t know it all. Simply email me at - [email protected]

TIP FROM KIRBAN -

When doing any modifications to raise the performance level, it is best to make sure you get the most fuel pressure and volume to handle any upgrades. Because of its location by the rear, often the gas filter is neglected. Treat your car to 100 proof octane whenever possible. That, in itself, makes a noticeable difference especially on a cool day.

NEW PRODUCTS FROM US -

1984-1987 Buick Regal -
FACTORY-STYLE BLACK TRUNK KIT (9 PIECES)

One of the very desirable options that GM offered in the Buick Regal was a fully carpeted trunk kit that also covered the spare tire and the side panels in your Regal. Besides the nice appearance, it also helps to protect the inner fender walls from being dented from any objects you would carry in the trunk.

The discontinued GM kit consisted of seven different grey pieces. We used the original pieces to develop an improved trunk kit.

We offer this trunk kit in two colors - BLACK (part #7764) or GREY (part #6510.)

NOTE - Our photo shows the GREY material trunk kit. If you are ordering from this page on the website, you would receive the BLACK trunk kit, part #7764.

Our kit consists of nine different pieces (two more pieces than GM and some have a diecut backing like factory), all of which are clearly marked, and kit comes with placement instructions.

Once installed there are no unfinished edges in your trunk, even the hinge brackets are covered.

NOTE - We are now including a special Trunk Kit Installation DVD, Part #7056 at no charge when you purchase our trunk kit.

NOTE - You may also be interested in this related grey trunk kit - #6510 Factory-style GREY Trunk Kit, 9 pieces.

1986-1987 Buick Turbo Regal -
REPLACEMENT EGR VACUUM SOLENOID

Over time, the EGR vacuum solenoid can fail, and trigger a code "32”.

The EGR is disabled at wide open throttle for maximum performance. The purpose of the EGR system is to lower nitrogen levels that are released into the atmosphere from the engine's exhaust. This is accomplished by decreasing the combustion temperature.

The EGR vacuum solenoid pulses the EGR valve many times a second to send the precise amount of exhaust gas back into the intake manifold.

If the EGR vacuum solenoid fails, the diagnostic switch in the EGR solenoid will trigger a code 32.

In states that have emission inspections, if this solenoid fails, it can cause your car to fail the emission test.

The EGR vacuum solenoid is located on the driver’s side of the engine, by the side of the valve cover. It sits behind the EGR valve.

It’s also best to check all the related vacuum lines to EGR vacuum solenoid for any cracks due to age or heat.

This replacement part is exactly like the GM original, there is no difference.

NOTE - You may also be interested in these related parts - #7749 Cam Shaft Sensor or #7161 TPS Sensor.

We have heard from a couple people that have had problems with the links in our Inner Circle.

When we check the links, they work fine. However, if you are not able to be directed to the exact website page or internet site, you can "copy" and "paste" the link into the URL in your browser (such as Safari, Firefox, Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, etc.) If it doesn't link in one browser, it may work in another.

Most people having problems are using Internet Explorer… If you are having issues with links, try another browser to see if it works.

You may need to "UPDATE" your browser to be use you are using the current version.

NOTE ABOUT PHOTOS ON THE WEBSITE -

We have heard from a couple people that have viewed the photos on the website. Because these have to be low-resolution photos to work on the Inner Circle segments on the website, any photos of text don't appear clear when enlarged. This is a problem when you are trying to see numbers, such as those on the VIN labels or pages from Options booklet. Also, because of photo reproduction and computer screen variations, the colors may not be true to the actual product or photo.

If you would like to have us email you any photo at the higher resolution for viewing, just email us and we will email them to you. Be sure to be specific on which pictures you want to see - Reference Inner Circle date and photo number 1, 2, 3 or 4 - [email protected]

ABOUT OUR EMAILS -

Any inquiries concerning used parts, you must email me direct - [email protected] - I will answer you. However, if I fail to answer you within 24 hours, please email us again. Since expanding into used parts, I get a lot of emails and sometimes I may forget your request or may not remember who requested the item.

IN CLOSING -

In about a week I am getting a VIP tour at A1 Cardones headquarters in Philadelphia. This will be my first visit to A1 Cardone. I’ve been dealing direct with them for about 10 years now. We are one of the very few mail-order companies buying at this direct level.

I will actually get to meet the one guy who has been rebuilding all the powermaster brake units we sell for the last 8 years. It should be interesting! I doubt the employee has ever seen a Turbo Regal. I plan to give him some of my DVDs.
