Greetings Turbo Regal Inner Circle Members - 02-09-2011


After much research, we now have several options available for 120 amp alternators for 1986 and 1987 Turbo Regal and 1989 Turbo Trans Am owners.

The information that follows is based on all the original Buick manuals I have in my personal collection, as well as conferring with Richard Clark, and an alternator company.

According to the Buick books I have researched, the 120 amp alternator used in the 1986-1987 Turbo Regals was unique to only those models. No other GM model used this 120 amp alternator during those years.

In 1986 the part number which is stamped on the flat surface in front near the top and just under the top mounting bolt was "1105 685 120A." With low production in 1986 compared to 1987, an original stamped 120 amp alternator housing for 1986 would be difficult to find today.

In 1987 the books show two different part numbers.

The early design part number was "1101 183 120A." The later design was "1101 349 120A."

None of my books show when the early design ended and the later design was used.

My research has found that by far the most popular one is the later number 1101 349 120A. This number appears on my personal 1987 Turbo-T and also on the one junker currently in my building. The ice is too thick to check the other one still outside on the trailer.

The letters "DR" are embossed rather than stamped on the original alternator housing down by the bottom mounting bolt. I assume DR stands for Delco Remy, the manufacturer of the alternators for GM.

PHOTO 1 - The top photo shows a close-up of the original 120A alternator on my personal 1987 Turbo-T. The part number is "1101 349" followed by "120A" on the first line. The lower photo shows an original front housing that has been cleaned and lightly painted the cast iron color. On this front housing you can clearly see the stamped 1101 349 120A. At this point, we can't determine what second line "5127 12V NEG" means. Four digits does not equate to any date-code sequence that we can determine.

For example, if the first number is the month, how would it show Oct-Nov-Dec since they would require two digits? Assuming the first 3 digits represented the day of the year (365), it doesn't make sense since my source has some that start with a number above 400. So that would not hold true since there are only 365 days in a year. The last digit may, in fact, refer to the year since most of the original housings my source has, the last digit is a 7. The rest of the numbers 12V NEG we can clearly assume what they mean.

According to Richard Clark and the information I have available, the 120 amp alternators used specifically for the 1986-1987 Turbo Regals did not have a date code that we can determine.

The lesser amp alternators did have date codes and those codes appear on the top lip area with the part number not stamped in the front like ours are. We welcome any positive proof that would explain the 4 digits in question on these unique alternators.

The 4 digit code on the non-Turbo Regals listed the day of the year followed by the year date. These would be the lesser amp alternators that Buick as well as other GM cars used during those years. This format does show up in the Buick manuals I have for the lesser amp alternators. It's important to remember in many cases GM illustrations are generic line drawings and not exact drawing specifically for certain applications.

We now have everything in place to virtually offer you any option you may want for a 1986-1987 Turbo Regal 120 amp alternator. While rebuilt alternators are not hard to find at various auto stores, you need to realize that most of them are simply rebuilt as replacement parts, not geared specifically in appearance for restoration purposes.

Prices are relatively cheap because they build many of them using mostly generic parts that will work, but may not look correct for a restoration project. Plus, in most cases, they require a core.

The local source we are using is paying strict attention to making them look as factory original as possible. Even other new ones we have found use a generic serpentine belt pulley, which is not the correct size. This could cause a charging issue if your belt is stretched. The pulley is not even black like the original pulley. The aftermarket stator section, which is sandwiched between the front and rear housings, is usually grey although the original stator is black.

We now have available brand new correct-looking 120 amp 1986-1987 Turbo Regal alternators. Not only are all the internals 100% brand new, but so is the front and back housings. The pulley is used and has been glass beaded and painted black to look factory. The tip of the rotor where the nut secures the pulley has been glass beaded and painted. The stator section is black like the original. The end result is a 120 amp alternator that is very close in appearance to what was on your car when it was new. The new housings do not have any number stamping on them.

Each one is pre-tested to be assured of putting out 120 amps, and comes with a 2-year warranty to the original purchaser. No core is required (you can keep your core.) Prices are noted, plus shipping.

PHOTO 3 - Shows the complete kit. It includes the front and back housing, 4 machined screws, factory original fan blade, and the correct serpentine belt pulley already painted black. It has the stamped number 1101 349 120A, which the Buick books say is the later 1987 Turbo Regal Alternator.

#7318 - 1987 Turbo Regal Original coded 120 amp alternator housing kit as show in Photo 3. Supplies are very limited since these are originals factory housings. Part number stamped on them is "1101 349 120A." Price is $65 for the kit.

Last, but not least, if you want to buy an original 1987 stamped alternator housing from us and have our source rebuild it using all brand new internals, we can also offer that service. The code on these housings would be "1101 349 120A." The price is $189.95 plus shipping. Supplies are very limited. Each would be pre-tested with a 2-year warranty to the original purchaser.

#7319 - An original rebuilt 1987 Turbo Regal 120 amp alternator using a used original housing stamped 1101 349 120A with all new internals and a 2-year warranty to the original purchaser. The price is $189.95. This price includes the original housing with the 1987 codes on it as seen in Photo 3.

The end result? If you own a 1986-1987 Turbo Regal or a 1989 Turbo Trans Am, we can pretty much offer you a correct 120 amp alternator that looks as close to original as you can ever expect to find with a 2-year warranty. No core is required, unless you are sending yours in specifically to be rebuilt.

Remember, the alternator is one of the most critical components to keep everything operating at its peak performance.

Last but not least, our same supplier has been able to find for us again the 1986-1987 Turbo Regal and 1989 Turbo Trans Am upgraded alternator pulley fan. This new fan pulley comes with the proper size spacer included and is a direct bolt in to replace your stock fan blade. This design has a smoother outward appearance and its design provides better cooling to your alternator than the original fan does. It also is easier to keep clean than the ribbed metal fan.

Our old part number was #6754 and it sold for $25. We are happy to report that we can retain the same price as before.

While researching this information, I noticed my 1994 Blazer also uses the same exact pulley as the Turbo Regals. Our 2000 Corvette alternator is a lot different in the fact the housing has vents in it to help dissipate the heat. I imagine many of the later GM alternators used that same type of vented housing. Heat is a killer to electronics.

Our source also says the air is drawn from the back of the alternator forward, NOT from the front to the back to cool the alternator. I asked about that since the upgraded pulley fan has fins towards the front of the alternator, rather than facing forward.

The information presented here on the codes is based on all the information I have available and discussions with Richard Clark. Obviously, as time goes on, having the proper coded parts with your car will increase its value.

2011 BUICK PERFORMANCE GROUP - JULY 29th - 31st, 2011

The Buick Performance Group event will feature the Turbo Buick "step children" the T-Types and Pontiac's unclaimed child the Turbo Trans Am. The event is at National Trail Raceway in Hebron, Ohio.

They have secured Scott Kelly to attend, as well as Denny Manner, Joe Guzek, Dave Roland, Ron Yuile. Denny has also contacted Tom Wallace in hopes that he will attend. The people mentioned have also contacted other retired Buick Engineers, including Mike Doble to have them attend. There will be displays and "tech" talks, so it should be very informative. I don't think there has ever been that many Turbo G-body Engineers in one place at one time. This is one event you do not want to miss this summer!
