Greetings Turbo Regal Inner Circle Members - 03-02-2011
FOLLOW-UP ON THE GRAND NATIONAL MODELS -
As we indicated last week and pictured, Monogram produced the 1:24 scale plastic model in several different box designs in the early 1990s.
John Zielinski, one of our customers from Michigan, has provided us with some additional information and Photo 1.
According to John, a total of 5 different Grand National box designs were produced.
When Monogram did the GNX in the same 1:24 scale, two different versions of that box were produced. This would be in addition to the combination version that featured the GNX with the ZR1 Corvette. (See 1-19-2011 Inner Circle for photo). In that combo pack they featured the ZR1 Corvette first, then the GNX. It is interesting to note on this twin-pack under the picture of the GNX it clearly states, "1987's FASTEST U.S. STREET CAR." The copyright on the box reads 1989, which is actually before the ZR1 would hit the showrooms.
PHOTO 1 - Shows the 5 different Monogram Grand National kits. The two on the far right are the early two designs that we showed in last week's Inner Circle. The three boxes on the left show minor changes and reflect that the company was no longer Monogram, but had combined with Revell at some point during the 1990s. This would explain the slightly different packaging.
Referring to the model kit on the top left of this photo, John says, "I have seen it with different types of stickers (on the bottom right of the box), this particular one says, "Streetburner Series." The box on the lower left has a sticker on it that says you can mail away to get a free American flag."
Some of you may recall the one catchy phrase that was on a bumper sticker back when the Turbo Regals were new. The quote was, "WE BRAKE FOR CORVETTES." From what I have been told, this catchy phrase originated with someone at Buick. I can recall in the late 1980s and early 1990s, buying original bumper stickers from Buick employees at the GS Nationals in Bowling Green, Kentucky.
Around that same time we even used that same slogan on one of our most popular ash grey T-shirts. The artwork was done by Paul Vilser, the artist who did many of our cartoons back in the day.
PHOTO 2 - Shows the back of the ash grey T-shirt we used to sell. Paul Vilser did the artwork. Although it may appear to be a Grand National, it is actually a WE 4, which is more rare. The clue is the 3.8 SFI Turbo emblem visible in the far left corner of the trunk lid. The license plate "A MOVER" was used because of one of our personalize license plates we have had since the early 1980s.
Our "A MOVER" plate first appeared on our 1967 Ram Air 4-speed Firebird, which was one of the quickest cars we have owned. In the early 1980s, we sold it to a person who lives near Chicago, Illinois and who still owns it. He was able to get the same vanity plate in Illinois.
We later had the plate on our 1987 silver Turbo Limited. So, if you attend any car shows around Chicago, you just may see an extremely rare 1967 Firebird with the license plate "A MOVER." Now you know the history.
PHOTO 3 - Shows the back end of our 2000 fixed roof coupe Corvette. As you can see, the "A MOVER" plate now adorns a Corvette.
SPARE TIRE INFORMATION -
While most of the parts on our cars carry a date specific code, I happened to look at the spare tire rim and noticed the embossed data on the tire and rim. Because of its size, the spare tire is unique to our cars when compared to a regular Regal. The Turbo Regals received a T155/80D16 tire.
Stamped by the valve stem is a code. I happen to have 3 original spare tires and the codes read, "K485, K486, and K487." The K487 is in the trunk of our personal 1987 Turbo-T. I would assume the last two digits represent the year. Based on the 3 tires I have, it would also appear the first two digits may be a standard code for the wheel.
Just on the other side of the valve stem is another code. Each one of the 3 I have is different - 3RY, 16RY, and 4RY.
PHOTO 4 - The top photo shows the entire correct factory spare tire and wheel. Notice the original grey valve stem. This one has never been used and is very close to mint. The lower left photo shows a close-up of the date code "K485." The lower right photo shows the tire/wheel size "T1555/80D16" that appears on the side of the tire.

NOTE ABOUT PHOTOS ON THE WEBSITE -
We have heard from a couple people that have viewed the photos on the website. Because these have to be low-resolution photos to work on the Inner Circle segments on the website, any photos of text don't appear clear when enlarged. This is a problem when you are trying to see numbers, such as those on the VIN labels or pages from Options booklet. Also, because of photo reproduction and computer screen variations, the colors may not be true to the actual product or photo.
If you would like to have us email you any photo at the higher resolution for viewing, just email us and we will email them to you. Be sure to be specific on which pictures you want to see - Reference Inner Circle date and photo number 1, 2, 3 or 4 - firstname.lastname@example.org
ALWAYS IN A BUYING POSITION WORKS -
Got any turbo parts you are not using? Why not cash them in for parts you need with a Letter of Credit. Simply email me a list - email@example.com

2011 BUICK PERFORMANCE GROUP - JULY 29th - 31st, 2011 - HEBRON, OHIO -
The Buick Performance Group event will feature the Turbo Buick "step children" the T-Types and Pontiac's unclaimed child the Turbo Trans Am. The event is at National Trail Raceway in Hebron, Ohio.
They have secured Scott Kelly to attend, as well as Denny Manner, Joe Guzek, Dave Roland, Ron Yuile. Denny has also contacted Tom Wallace in hopes that he will attend. The people mentioned have also contacted other retired Buick Engineers, including Mike Doble to have them attend. There will be displays and "tech" talks, so it should be very informative. I don't think there has ever been that many Turbo G-body Engineers in one place at one time. This is one event you do not want to miss this summer!
Information for the Event can be found here -
