4-6-11 Inner Circle

4-6-11 Inner Circle

Greetings Turbo Regal Inner Circle Members - 04-06-2011

After last week's Inner Circle, we heard again from Anthony Petridis, and Chris Tobie about specifics on the Body Trim Plate that I had questions about.

According to Chris, who has firsthand knowledge since he worked at GM, our cars were some of the last GM vehicles to have a body trim plate.

It appears once again GM used still a different code system to note the date. Using the same Body Trim Plate we showed as Photo 3 last week (03-30-2011) the very first 4 letter/number codes refers to the build date. This was the group of numbers I was unsure as to what it stood for. The second group after that we did explain.

In the case of the Body Trim Plate we showed last week, it shows "H02B." The first letter stands for the year; Example 1984 is the letter E, 1985 is the letter F, 1986 is the letter G, and 1987 is the letter H. The second two digits stands for the month, and the last letter indicates the week of the month; A means the first week, B the second week, C the third week, D the forth week and E the 5th week.

So, for this body plate number H02B - H it is for 1987, 02 is the second month (February), and the B is second week in February of 1987.

Today there is another part that would be hard to see the visible original date code - the pair of gas filled hood shocks. In many cases, they have probably been replaced, maybe even several times.

PHOTO 1 - The photo on the left shows the reference page in my Parts Identification and Inspection Guide. The date code is easy to understand. It reads the day of the year, then the year. The photo on the right shows the original hood shocks on our 2000 Corvette. The code reads "244 - 99," meaning the 244th day of 1999.

PHOTO 2 - Shows a gas hood shock on the 1986 T-Type we just bought. These need to be replaced on the car. It is dated "304 96," meaning the 304th day of 1996. Interesting enough, the hood shocks on our personal 1987 Turbo-T have no codes or numbers on them at all.

Since I have started to dismantle various 1985-1987 Turbo Regals, I've come across many discrepancies.

I've found most bolts are either 10mm or 13mm, and I've learned various tricks to remove certain parts. I've also discovered minor differences in the analog boost gauges.

PHOTO 3 - Shows both versions I have seen in the 1984-1987 Turbo Regals. The top one is identical to the one in my 1987 Turbo-T. I assume the other one shown in the lower photo was used mostly in 1984-1985 model. You can see how the top one shows 5 and 10 PSI, not just 0 and 15. The difference is so minor most owners probably would not see the difference.

My son Darrell, who many of you know, runs a body shop. He currently is fixing a late-model Mercedes Benz sedan. While many hoods today operate with hood shocks similar to our hoods, this Mercedes sedan does also along with unique hinge assembly. While not unusual by itself, except for one fact, the only way to visibly see the hood shock and replace it is you have to remove the fender!

PHOTO 4 - Shows this late-model Mercedes sedan with the passenger's side fender removed. (It hit into a deer). You can see the hood shock and where it is located. My son had to replace the headlight assembly, which was $1,300. The fender is aluminum, undoubtedly to save weight. So, if my observation is correct, unless the Mercedes mechanic has some secret trick to r & r the hood shocks, the labor involved could run into several hours!

CAR FOR SALE - 1986 Buick T-Type -

Rather than take up space here with all the details, you can email me direct if you are interested and would like more information and photos - [email protected]

Here is the basic info - 1986 Buick T-Type, 144,000 miles, solid roof, silver exterior, burgundy interior (solid bench seat). This is a very unusual Turbo Regal, not only does it have a bench seat, but the car has a burgundy interior instead of a grey interior to compliment the silver exterior. Car is mostly stock with an exceptional near mint interior.

This car should be ready shortly. The projected sale price will be under $9300.

A local friend of mine, who has small used car lot near me, is selling an unusual 1993 Chevy short bed truck. It is one of the rare Indy 500 trucks from May 1993. Not sure how many they produced. Truck is black with all the Indy decals intact and looks to be 100% stock and extremely clean. It does have 90,000 miles on it. Truck was just Pennsylvania inspected. They want $10,500 for it. Email me if you or someone you know may be interested in this limited production Indy 500 Chevrolet pick up truck - [email protected]

We can no longer get the 1984-1987 Turbo Regal GM rear impact cushion #6919. They are discontinued. It's probably just a matter of time before the GM factory original front impact cushion #6918 also goes bye bye!

You can't order this Special Deal from our website, you MUST call our office - 215-766-1611 x 0.

This is an excellent buy since the cars now 25 years and older. It's a key part to bring the car back to that new ride feeling.

We have heard from a couple people that have viewed the photos on the website. Because these have to be low-resolution photos to work on the Inner Circle segments on the website, any photos of text don't appear clear when enlarged. This is a problem when you are trying to see numbers, such as those on the VIN labels or pages from Options booklet. Also, because of photo reproduction and computer screen variations, the colors may not be true to the actual product or photo.

If you would like to have us email you any photo at the higher resolution for viewing, just email us and we will email them to you. Be sure to be specific on which pictures you want to see - Reference Inner Circle date and photo number 1, 2, 3 or 4 - [email protected]

2011 BUICK PERFORMANCE GROUP - JULY 29th - 31st, 2011 - HEBRON, OHIO -

The Buick Performance Group event will feature the Turbo Buick "step children" the T-Types and Pontiac's unclaimed child the Turbo Trans Am. The event is at National Trail Raceway in Hebron, Ohio.

They have secured Scott Kelly to attend, as well as Denny Manner, Joe Guzek, Dave Roland, Ron Yuile. Denny has also contacted Tom Wallace in hopes that he will attend. The people mentioned have also contacted other retired Buick Engineers, including Mike Doble to have them attend. There will be displays and "tech" talks, so it should be very informative. I don't think there has ever been that many Turbo G-body Engineers in one place at one time. This is one event you do not want to miss this summer!

Information for the Event can be found here -
