3-18-09 Inner Circle

Greetings Turbo Regal Inner Circle Members - 3-18-2009

Number eight Turbo Regal just showed up. It is a 1984 Grand National. So, now I have had a 1984 T-Type and a 1984 Grand National, something we never owned under the "Cars for Sale" category. It will probably take me a while to hit 300 on the dead or nearly dead Turbo Regal listing.

Remember, any inquiries concerning used parts, you must email me direct - [email protected] - We will answer you. However, if we fail to answer you within 24 hours, please email us again. Since expanding into used parts, I get a lot of emails.

O'Neil Buick-Pontiac-GMC, who as many of you know handles all our Turbo Regal car transactions, is doing Cruise Nights. He personally owns one of our very low-mileage Grand Nationals and has a 1935 Buick coupe fitted with a 1986-1987 Turbo engine that my son engineered. Mike's shop is in the midst of putting that car back together.

The dates for this summer cruise are May 1st, June 5th, July 3rd, August 7th, and September 4th. Time runs from 5pm until 8:30 pm. Location is 869 West Street Road, Warminster, PA 18974. If you need more info, contact John Baker at 215-672-0900. As the May date draws closer, we will mention it again. We may attend the first one with one of our cars. Depends on my schedule. Dash plaques will be given to the first 50 cars.

GM-HIGH TECH PERFORMANCE MAGAZINE APRIL 2009 issue is currently on the newsstands. It has an in-depth article featuring a Grand National that belongs to long-time customer Anthony Petridis in New Jersey. They performed a baseline dyno test of the powertrain. Then they did a good spring-cleaning - setting sensors to specs, clean the fuel system, clean the intake system, and chemically removed intake valve and combustion chamber deposits.

The magazine article goes into more detail than I have mentioned here. Interesting to Turbo owners is this "spring cleaning" resulted in a net increase of 23 HP and 38 lb ft torque at the rear wheels! This is on a stock 71,000 mile Grand National. It also eliminated 3 degrees of knock retard Anthony had at 13.77 pounds of boost.

Anthony had Richard Clark clean his injectors at Richards’s event last fall.

I noticed with my 2001 Tahoe, that every time I would start the truck, the gas pedal would stick prior to depressing the pedal. Most annoying. Turned out to be carbon deposits on the throttle body plate, causing the butterfly to stick in the closed position.

Once I had it cleaned out, it eliminated that problem and the truck seemed to perform slightly better. What many people don't realize is, things such as carbon, etc. build up slowly. When things happen slowly, we may not catch it right away.

A rare first copy of Superman just sold at auction for $317,200. (Not a misprint). Perhaps more astounding is the previous owner bought it for less than $1. Math not being my strong suit, I have no idea of what the profit margin is but, whatever the real number is, it had to make the seller an awful happy person.

Alan Livingston made it to the ripe old age of 91. In 1946 he created "Bozo the Clown" for a record album. That started a cottage industry of merchandise and television series. In the 1950s he held an executive position with Capitol records and signed Frank Sinatra, which at the time led to Frank Sinatra’s comeback.

Alan then left Capitol records and went to work in TV and produced the hit series "Bonanza." I remember this show quite well as it was one of the few that was in color. I think it originally came on Sunday night.

While the above accomplishments may seem pretty good, he really scored when he returned to Capitol records as President in the early 1960s. He signed the Beach Boys. Then he heard a Beatle song, "I Want To Hold Your Hand" he agreed to release the single and brought the Fab Four to the United States in 1964 to promote it. Capitol that was partly owned by the Beatle record company EMI in the United Kingdom, earlier had rejected the group's initial hit singles as unsuitable for the American market!

From Bozo the Clown to the Beatles, who would have thought the two were connected?

A few Inner Circles back we did an article on a 1949-1950 Ford that brought back memories for me back in the mid 1960s and had surfaced near our warehouse.

The current owner has contacted me about buying the car. The car has had two owners since it belong to my friend who owned the Getty gas station back then. The current owner has owned the car about 25 years.

I went to look to take closer look at the car and after about 30 years of sitting outside, the car is closer to reverting back to nature than turning the corner and being restored. It's ashame, but some cars cross that threshold of being beyond the point of restoration and become strictly a parts vehicle or a landmark for the yard. (We will keep you posted).

We have posted a photo of this car with this Inner Circle.

The May 2009 HOT ROD magazine issue has a six-page article entitled, "FASTER AND MORE FURIOUS." Complete with various photos, it goes into great detail on the cars and trucks used in the upcoming Fast and Furious Movie. For example, the article says more than 240 cars were used. The crew that worked on the cars numbered 40. The construction shop consisted of 65,000 square feet industrial building.

Interesting enough, the article goes on to state that of all the cars built, the Grand National was the most unusual tackled by the special effects department. One of the Grand Nationals was actually mounted backwards on the chassis, so it would appear to be going in reverse when it was actually going forward. This article states most were V6 turbo powered, however a few were Chevy crate V-8s. They were disguised as GNXs. Our company supplied the GNX-style louvers and other parts last summer for the construction group that built the cars for the movie.

Part #7007 - 1978-1987 Regal - Column Pro-Gard Steering Collar Lock
These are no longer available.

At the Magna meeting last month, we displayed the new black headlight bezels that are being made by the same midwestern company that did the new reproduction black grilles. They are due to get a partial shipment of the new black headlight bezels in the next 10 days. Our company will be one of the first to get them in stock.

Like the grilles, the satin black is molded into the plastic. Check out the photo on our website, Part #7222. I did some research on GM pricing of original black headlight bezels. Back in 1987 the retail price was about $55 a pair. At the end of production when we sold them in 2005 and part of 2006, we sold them for $135 a pair.

The new suggested retail price on these will be probably $179.95 a pair. This is a very good price when compared to GM's list price back in 2005-2006.

The company behind this project is to be commended for being able to come in at a reasonable price for a much-needed part. In order to get some idea as to initial sales for these new reproduction black headlight bezels, we will give a special introductory price if you place your order by March 31, 2009 by 4 pm. If you place your order by then, the price is just $149.95 plus shipping. We would not charge your credit card until we have the parts in hand and ready to ship.

These have a money back guarantee for quality and fit. The material today is far superior to the material GM used back in the mid 1980s. By purchasing now, you can save approximately $30 a pair.

These will fit all 1984-1987 Regals and are correct for all Grand Nationals, GNXs, T-Types, WE4s and any Turbo-T with the WO2 exterior sport package. (Buick's terminology).

*Special pricing if purchased by 4 pm. March 31, 2009.

NOTE - Your credit card will NOT be charged until we can ship the parts to

We have been told that the GM black passenger's side marker light is no longer available from GM, GM Part #0919874.

This is the side marker light that was used on all the 1984-1986 T-Types and 1987 Turbo-Ts with black-out package, WE4, Grand Nationals and GNX. This is the right hand side only (passenger's side) marker light that attaches to the headlight bezel. We have a few left. Remember, these are brand new, still in the GM wrapper. Price is $69.95 and shipping. Less than 4 on hand.

To order, call our office - 215-766-1611 x 2. Order while supplies last, to avoid disappointment.

The best way to stay informed with the upcoming show season is to check out the various Turbo Buick forums.

With the economy in a downward spiral, our concentration is more focused on buying dead 1986-1987 Turbo Regals for parts rather than super mint originals. Naturally, with fuel prices we will focus on Turbo Regals within a 500-mile radius of our location and cars under $5,000. If you have such a vehicle, email me - [email protected]

If you would like to see any Kirban Performance Products items listed on eBay, here is a link to our store and auctions -

If you are buying any of our used parts from the parts listing above, we can adjust the shipping if you buy more than one listed item. Canadian shipping is higher. Since we are now dismantling cars, look for smaller used items to be available at great prices. Some of which would be great to have as spares, especially since these parts cars are getting harder to find.

You have probably noticed, if something fails to sell in a previous week, we sometimes lower the price slightly the following week. After that it usually goes the ebay route.

Be sure to tell any friends to get on our FREE Kirban Inner Circle emails, if they are looking for parts.

We now accept Paypal for any of the used parts listed.
