6-29-11 Inner Circle

Greetings Turbo Regal Inner Circle Members - 06-29-2011

Many of you have some of the popular 1:18 scale GMP Turbo Buick diecast that was produced several years ago. Personally I have lost track at just how many different versions they made. In my private collection I have a total of 19 different ones in the 1:18 scale. They also made several in the smaller 1:24 scale.

I like the 1:24 scale better. One reason they take up less space!

Recently I purchased another diecast from Paul Castle. He had bought two of another version that was limited to just 12 built. The box says, "RARE UNRESTORED VERSION - 1987 BUICK GRAND NATIONAL - 1 OF 12," and was made by Backyard Conversions. It appears to be a GMP 1:18 scale racecar Grand National version made to look like a work in progress!

PHOTO 1 - This top photo shows this "unrestored" version. We show the box it comes in, the actual Grand National car and the little Certificate of Authenticity that came in the box. The one I have is number 10 of just 12 built! The lower photos show the exact same Grand National racecar on how it was originally sold by GMP. Even the license plate reads 1 of 12.

It's a clever idea and well thought out to include not only a box, but a Certificate of Authenticity. After all only 12 exist. Or, if you have two of the original Grand National racecars you can reverse the process yourself and have one in the unrestored condition also! Maybe put some oil spots under the engine bay area.

Last Friday I went to "GM at Carlisle," which is a three-day event. Among the various events at Carlisle, this GM one is one of the smaller venues. Although I did not see any Turbo Regals on Friday, in the field show area under special invitation in the one main building they did have a 1984 and a 1987 Grand National on display. This was the first time I have seen Grand Nationals elevated to that status at this event.

PHOTO 2 - This is the 1987 Grand National that was on special display at GM at Carlisle. I believe the owner told me the car had 13,000 miles on it. The paint was all original and was extremely nice. Car was 95% original, basically only lacking the original tires and battery. The 1984 Grand National also quite nice and had about 22,000 miles on it as I recall. However, that one had been repainted (not pictured.)

PHOTO 3 - Also at GM at Carlisle in the Car Corral was this 1934 Chevrolet coupe for sale. Car was all original with less than 6,000 miles! This photo shows the 1934 Chevrolet coupe. The asking price was $27,500 / OBO. A very well kept, solid car, which seemed fairly priced to me. The second photo shows the info on the windshield. This car has survived intact and original for over 75 years. I wonder if any Turbo Buicks will make that benchmark? Only have another 50 years to go!

This past Sunday I attended a local Plymouth Club's car show, held at a dealership in nearby Hatboro, that a friend owns. I used to tow for them about 25 years ago when it was a Dodge dealership. Some of the participants at car shows really put a lot of effort into the display. Some include related items that would have been available when their car or truck was brand new.

PHOTO 4 - This was about a 1948-1949 Dodge sedan that was decked out with many neat period piece items inside on the seats and the trunk and on the ground. The top photo shows the toys that were positioned on the back seat. There was a Mr. & Mrs. Potato Head Kit, a cowgirl outfit, a Little Lulu book and some dolls. The lower photo is priceless. Besides the early cameras on the seat, what I found most unusual was the primitive child's car seat! It looked brand new. With today's safety laws, this car seat would never see production! While the car may not be one of the highly-sought-after models, the truth is, cars like this built just after World War II were what many Americans were buying and driving with their kids! No DVDs or video games to entertain us! Even air conditioning was not really in mass production yet!

Effective today June 29th, 2011 the 1984-1987 Turbo Regal Steering Wheel Machined Billet Aluminum Horn Ring, Part #1518, is now $46.95 instead of $41.95. This is a very popular seller for us and eliminates the problem the original one has of cracking because it is plastic. This reproduction is very close to original in appearance and since it's made in metal, it will be the last one you have to buy!

KIRBAN REUNION EVENT - With Special Guest Linda Vaughn "Miss Hurst"
Saturday, August 20th, 2011 - 10 am - 3 pm - Rain or Shine
525 and 529 Haycock Run Road, Kintnersville, PA 18930

I contacted Don Lane who worked at Hurst during the 1960s. He actually worked on the prototype Hurst Olds that was presented to Oldsmobile to consider for what later became the 1968 Hurst Olds. He is planning on coming to our Kirban Reunion event.

I realize many car shows overlap each other, which can make it tough deciding which event you plan to attend. We tend to make ours more relaxed, with no judging. Also, it's a great location on grass with plenty of shade trees on the properties. We will have array of various items you can purchase for Linda to sign and a limited number of custom-made Reunion plaques to mark this unique event.

All we ask you do is be sure to email me personally with the number of people attending in your group. This will help us figure out how many donuts and Reunion plaques to order. Email me - [email protected]

On July 1, 1941 it was the beginning of one of the most annoying aspects on TV - the very first commercial to air on a licensed TV station. It was for the Bulova watch company and they paid a whopping $9 for the ad. One milestone most of us wish never took place!

We have heard from a couple people that have viewed the photos on the website. Because these have to be low-resolution photos to work on the Inner Circle segments on the website, any photos of text don't appear clear when enlarged. This is a problem when you are trying to see numbers, such as those on the VIN labels or pages from Options booklet. Also, because of photo reproduction and computer screen variations, the colors may not be true to the actual product or photo.

If you would like to have us email you any photo at the higher resolution for viewing, just email us and we will email them to you. Be sure to be specific on which pictures you want to see - Reference Inner Circle date and photo number 1, 2, 3 or 4 - [email protected]

Got any turbo parts you are not using? Why not cash them in for parts you need with a Letter of Credit. Simply email me a list - [email protected]

Also, we are still buying dead or partially dead 1984-1987 Turbo Regals under $4,000 that are within 250 to 350 miles of our location.

2011 BUICK PERFORMANCE GROUP - JULY 29th - 31st, 2011 - HEBRON, OHIO -

The Buick Performance Group event will feature the Turbo Buick "step children" the T-Types and Pontiac's unclaimed child the Turbo Trans Am. The event is at National Trail Raceway in Hebron, Ohio.

They have secured Scott Kelly to attend, as well as Denny Manner, Joe Guzek, Dave Roland, Ron Yuile. Denny has also contacted Tom Wallace in hopes that he will attend. The people mentioned have also contacted other retired Buick Engineers, including Mike Doble to have them attend. There will be displays and "tech" talks, so it should be very informative. I don't think there has ever been that many Turbo G-body Engineers in one place at one time. This is one event you do not want to miss this summer!

We will be attending this major event that entire weekend. So, bring us any parts you want to trade in and we especially want powermaster cores. We will be set up as a vendor.

Information for the Event can be found here -
