10th ANNUAL MUSCLE CAR MADNESS at the York Reunion - July 8-9, 2011 -

This past weekend, I had the honor of helping Linda Vaughn, "Miss Hurst" at two events in Pennsylvania - the 10th Annual Musclecar Madness and the 40th Anniversary Nostalgia Nationals at the Beaver Springs Dragway.

Fortunately, the Friday and Saturday Musclecar Madness event was held in this huge building and it was air conditioned. All the cars inside were top-notch racecars from the 1960s and 1970s, mostly made famous on the various east coast drag strips. One of the most famous dragstrips was the York 30 Dragway, which has disappeared like so many others. While growing up, I was not heavy into the drag racing scene, but I do remember several of the major players in the area.

The quality of the cars was nothing short of amazing. Most of the vendors that were set up were selling older race-related items, magazines, and programs from various racetracks. I was definitely out of my element.

Once Linda arrived she had a constant line of people bringing items for her to sign and have their picture taken with her. She has been part of the racing world on all levels for almost 50 years now, and her memory is as sharp as ever. She remembers names, their cars, where she's seen them before. She still has that typical southern charm and smile for her fans. People were patient as they waited in line to meet her. Unfortunately, she broke her foot at Indy back in May so she wasn't able get around very easily.

PHOTO 1 - This photo shows Linda Vaughn "Miss Hurst" signing some of the original-style Hurst baseball caps at the 10th Annual Musclecar Madness held last weekend in York, PA.

PHOTO 2 - The top photo shows Linda signing the huge poster I won at the auction at the end, which was the advertisement poster for the show. Linda appears on this cardboard poster. They only had two of these and I had the highest bid. The most popular car part owners brought in from the car show for Linda to sign was their glove box door. The lower left photo shows Linda signing a red glove box door. The lower right photo shows Linda autographing an old poster for a gentleman.

Even Mickey Thompson's original swiss cheese 421 Pontiac was on display. Also one of the very few 1963 Tempest 421 stationwagons.

PHOTO 3 - While not part of the actual drag racing scene, this 1955 primered Chevy is the sole survivor of the 3 Chevies used in the movie "Two-Lane Blacktop." The first photo shows the actual car. The lower left photo shows the descriptive poster, which read in part, "One of three driven by James Taylor and Dennis Wilson in "Two-Lane Blacktop" (1971) and the only one to survive in original form." The lower right photo shows some of the photos displayed with the car.

Without doing more research, this may or may not be one of the cars also used in the American Grafitti movie, which Harrison Ford drove. From what I have read, they only built two 1955 Chevies for that movie and one was rolled and wrecked in the film and later destroyed. I do not know if this is the existing one from that movie.

The event at York Fairgrounds was a real eye opener for me. I am not accustomed to being at a car event like this that runs to 8 pm. That is a long day! This was my first experience working with Linda Vaughn. She was the one of the major guests at this event and, as such, she was featured at the very front of the display hall. The event featured 650 race and muscle cars, along with competitors from the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s.

When I was able to take a break on Saturday, I walked outside to see some of the cars. In the immediate parking lot sat a very nice looking 1950 Ford coupe. Ford made two versions of the coupe. The difference was that one was a cheaper model (with no back seat, radio and clock delete, etc.) The one at this event was the more deluxe model as it had a back seat, radio and clock. The car had a For Sale sign on it. I had one as a teenager and always had a soft spot for those cars. As I started to look the car over, I noticed an older gentleman with a cane by his side sitting on a bench in the shade. He said he owned the car. I went over to talk to him. I could see he was quite sad as he explained he would have to give up driving shortly as he had both his hips replaced and was recently told his cancer had returned. It was becoming too much for him to turn the steering wheel. He told me he was 80 years old and recently lost his wife.

As we talked, he mentioned the car once belong to Bruce Larson and he even had proof as he found a registration card in the car verifying it. He was told Bruce had even rebuilt the engine when he owned it. He said it still runs so quiet, you can't hear it run except for the exhaust!

Bruce Larson is one of drag racing most successful pioneer racecar builder and driver. He is well-known for his 1966 Chevelle USA-1, the first all-fiberglass funny car. In 1989 he was crowned NHRA Funny Car World Champion. He also drove Don Garlits' Swamp Rat #34 Top Fuel Dragster. I had met Bruce Larson several times at various events through a mutual friend and Buick customer, Bill Zink who helps Bruce at most of the events.

I mentioned to the elderly gentleman that Bruce was inside at this event and I was sure I could get him to come out and see him and even sign the dashboard of this car since he once owned it.

I went back in the main building and located Bruce, who without hesitation came out and talked to the owner. Bruce filled him in on what he did to the car and autographed his dashboard. I took a bunch of photos and told the gentleman I would have my wife print them out and mail them to him as a gift. He was most grateful.

While it may be hard to admit it, the day comes for all of us when we can no longer drive the car or cars we have worked on over the years.

PHOTO 4 - The top photos show the 1950s Ford coupe. Although the car has been repainted it is a correct factory color. The interior was 100% original. The lower left photo shows Bruce autographing the dashboard. The lower right photo shows Bruce Larson on the right talking to Ivan, the current owner of the Ford.

You could hit the triple play! Our Reunion event Saturday August 20th, 10 am until 3 pm. Travel to nearby Perkasie for their "Under the Stars" event, which runs from 5 pm until 9:30 pm that same Saturday. Then Sunday on to Coopersburg Collector Car Show in nearby Coopersburg. That event draws 400 plus cars.

So, in the space of 2 days, you could hit 3 major car events all within 20 miles of each other and all 3 completely different formats. Ours is a Reunion non-judged event, Perkasie is held at night on the main streets in town, and Sunday is held at a beautiful park and is a judged event. We will be with Linda at the Coopersburg event.

At our Reunion event, we will have array of various items you can purchase for Linda to sign and a limited number of custom-made Reunion plaques to mark this unique event.

This is a free event. All we ask you do is be sure to email me personally with the number of people attending in your group. This will help us figure out how many donuts and Reunion plaques to order. Email me - [email protected]

We have heard from a couple people that have viewed the photos on the website. Because these have to be low-resolution photos to work on the Inner Circle segments on the website, any photos of text don't appear clear when enlarged. This is a problem when you are trying to see numbers, such as those on the VIN labels or pages from Options booklet. Also, because of photo reproduction and computer screen variations, the colors may not be true to the actual product or photo.

If you would like to have us email you any photo at the higher resolution for viewing, just email us and we will email them to you. Be sure to be specific on which pictures you want to see - Reference Inner Circle date and photo number 1, 2, 3 or 4 - [email protected]

Got any turbo parts you are not using? Why not cash them in for parts you need with a Letter of Credit. Simply email me a list - [email protected]

Also, we are still buying dead or partially dead 1984-1987 Turbo Regals under $4,000 that are within 250 to 350 miles of our location.

JULY 29th & 31st, 2011
National Trail Raceway, Hebron, Ohio

The Buick Performance Group event will feature the Turbo Buick "step children" the T-Types and Pontiac's unclaimed child the Turbo Trans Am. The event is at National Trail Raceway in Hebron, Ohio.

They have secured Scott Kelly to attend, as well as Denny Manner, Joe Guzek, Dave Roland, Ron Yuile. Denny has also contacted Tom Wallace in hopes that he will attend. The people mentioned have also contacted other retired Buick Engineers, including Mike Doble to have them attend. There will be displays and "tech" talks, so it should be very informative. I don't think there has ever been that many Turbo G-body Engineers in one place at one time. This is one event you do not want to miss this summer!

We will be attending this major event that entire weekend set up as a vendor. So, bring us any parts you want to trade in. We have also been asked to judge the original Turbo Regal class at this event. Richard Clark will be helping me as well.
