7-27-11 Inner Circle

Greetings Turbo Regal Inner Circle Members - 07-27-2011

I think most Turbo Regal owners would agree, one of the rarest and seldom seen factory options would be the "Twilight Sentinel Headlight Control." This is the exact wording Buick used for its description. The trunk ID code on your trunk label for this option would be "T82." The suggested retail price from Buick remained the same from 1984 through 1987 at $57.

Of the 300-plus 1986-1987 Turbo Regals that I have sold, I never kept track of what percentage of the cars had this option.

This option was not part of the long list of options that came on the GNX. (I have a GNX window sticker that confirms this was not standard on the GNX). It is one of the rare options Buick offered on the Turbo Regal. Rarer still would have been the engine block heater, seldom seen in the southern states!

PHOTO 1 - I recently purchased a used Twilght Sentinel kit, which is pictured here.Picture shows the Twilight Sentinel Electronic Amplifier, the actual thumb wheel, the sensor that goes in the top of the upper dash panel, the sensor bezel, misc. screws, and a new correct applique dash cover.

This past weekend I attended a major car show located on several of the main streets in Doylestown, Pennsylvania. I spotted this 1970 Oldsmobile 442 convertible, which just stood out as being an outstanding example of a top-notch restoration. The attention to detail was unbelievable, especially evident under the hood. With the Buick Performance Group event next weekend and being a Judge for the original cars, I thought I would share these photos of the detail of the engine compartment.

PHOTO 2 - The top photo is looking at the very front of the engine and the radiator support. No less than 5 stickers can be seen, including one on the oil fill tube and one on the radiator cap explaining about lining up the ears of the radiator cap a certain way. The lower left photo shows a portion of the battery with the spring-loaded red positive battery cable, the GM hoses, and labels on the cables. The lower right photo shows no less than 6 decals noting the various lines on and around the power brake unit. The entire engine compartment in my opinion would max any points at any show and I know very little about Oldsmobiles! The entire car reflected the same attention to detail.

PHOTO 3 - Also catching my interest at this car show was this engine compartment on this three-window Ford coupe. It appears that the owner of this car in the top photo took actual pistons and not only had them chrome plated to show standards, but modified the bases so they were air cleaners on his engine. This has to be one of a kind. The lower photo shows how this owner made a unique sign about his 1930 Ford. He actually attached a connecting rod complete with a piston as a weight to keep it from falling over.

Speaking of unusual things, we had a unique experience this week. Last Monday (07-18-2011) when we came home from week, there was a small dog running up our driveway. From a distance, I thought it was a dog that had been recently groomed. Later that night, he returned and the next morning he was still hanging around our house. Because we are animal lovers and the temperature was about 100 degrees, we put some food and water out for him. None of the five outside cats we have and take care of, were too happy about this new visitor.

Eileen researched it and found out he is a "Chinese crested" (hairless) dog. Devyn called him "Charlie" and I named him "Ugly," and you can certainly see why. He is so ugly, that he's cute.

He had no collar ID and we would later find out no chip. I think someone simply dropped him in our area. Eileen contacted every vet in the area, the police department and the SPCA but no one reported him lost. We posted a flyer about him at the neighborhood businesses, but no one claimed him. The dog got really attached to me and would follow me all around outside, which made it even more difficult to part ways with him. Once he realized there were miniature horses in the front pasture, he decided to constantly bark at them. We also sometimes take care of our granddogs; a 14-year old Lab and a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, which Ugly barked at too. Between his constant barking at night, the excessive heat, and the fact he started to peel the wood off the front door, we had to make the decision to take him to the SPCA with a donation. This breed of dog requires a lot of attention because they are hairless. Maybe the dog knew we liked the unusual and rare things and animals. The SPCA said they should be able to find him a home and they wouldn't put him down.

PHOTO 4 - Shows two photos of this little dog, Ugly.

On one of my recent trips, I bought about 100 feet of original gray pallex material dated 1992 (the material is dated on the back side). Although this is dated 1992, this would have been one of the replacement materials for the gray portion of the 1985-1987 Grand National seats and door panels if your upholstery shop ordered after 1992.

As many of you realize, whenever you restore your interior, it is critical that ALL the material comes off the same roll of material, otherwise you will never get a dead-on exact match. Nor will you ever find material, even if you found 1986-1987 dated gray pallex material, to match your Grand National seats as they are today. Remember, the interior has been exposed to the sun and heat, and general wear and has faded over the years.

Even when the material is produced, there can be slight color variations from roll to roll, depending on the dye lot and when it was made.

This is one reason why we have always stated, if you get your headliner redone, be sure to have the sun visors done at the same time (or get enough material to redo your sun visors at a later date), otherwise they will never match your redone headliner.

My roll is one continuous roll and has been properly stored since 1992. The material we have is 56 inches wide, which works out perfectly to do both of the gray front seats portions and the gray rear seats portions, in the proper direction with no waste. We have figured out how much length of this material is required to do all the gray portions of the Grand National seats and the upper door panels, so you are 100% assured all the material will match.

Owners realize if you brush the pallex material with your hand, one way the color looks different than when you brush the material the other way. If you examine your driver's seat closely, you can see how the pattern has been bruised from getting in and out of the seat. You may also have wear to the fabric or stains.

Several companies have reproduced newer versions of the pallex material, some of which seem to have a blueish-green tint.

Our price is $129.95 for a full 6 feet 6 inches by 56 inches wide piece of material. This is enough to do the GRAY portions of the front and rear seats and upper door panels. You would get one continuous rolled piece, so you are assured the material will all be the same.

Is the color dead on to what GM used in 1985-1987? No, nor can anyone match that material exactly even if you found 1985-1987 dated pallex material. You would almost have to find remnants of the actual roll that your actual seats came from... even then it wouldn't make since it hasn't been exposed to the elements.

So, this is the only way we will sell it. If you are interested, contact me with your name and mailing address - [email protected]

First I will mail you a free sample of the material. This way you can see the exact color this pallex material before purchasing it.

This is just one solution to getting your seats redone. It's amazing this roll dated 1992 is still around and in great shape. We will have samples and material available at the Buick Performance event this coming weekend.

Special thanks to all those that send me emails complimenting me on the weekly Inner Circle and enjoying the various topics we cover. Fortunately, I seldom suffer from writer's block and usually write them over each weekend as time permits. My wife, Eileen, spends more time correcting my English and making sure sentences make sense! Skills that I lack.

We will soon be carrying the crank sensor kits, and the high/low fan relays that sit next to the fan delay relay in the inner driver's fender of the 1986-1987 Turbo Regals.

As these cars continue to age, sensors and relays are having more failures.

Watch for information in future Inner Circles.

We finally have the 6 options for those custom-made center armrest consoles with cup holders on the website. These are really well made! Here is a link to view the 6 options.

Earlier this year, Mazda had to recall about 65,000 cars in North America due to the risk of yellow sac spiders building webs in the fuel system! I am not sure what their solution was to eliminate the problem.

An amateur Swiss pilot crashed his small airplane into his estranged Mom's house in attempt to kill himself and his Mom. He telephoned his Mom prior to making his dive and his Mom was able to get to the basement in time and survived the crash. However, he did accomplish half his goal and died in the crash.

You could hit the triple play! Our Reunion event Saturday August 20th, 10 am until 3 pm. Travel to nearby Perkasie for their "Under the Stars" event, which runs from 5 pm until 9:30 pm that same Saturday. Then Sunday on to Coopersburg Collector Car Show in nearby Coopersburg. That event draws 400-plus cars.

So, in the space of 2 days, you could hit 3 major car events all within 20 miles of each other and all 3 completely different formats. Ours is a Reunion non-judged event, Perkasie is held at night on the main streets in town, and Sunday is held at a beautiful park and is a judged event. We will be with Linda at the Coopersburg event.

At our Reunion event, we will have an array of various items you can purchase for Linda to sign and a limited number of custom-made Reunion plaques to mark this unique event.

This is a free event. All we ask you do is be sure to email me personally with the number of people attending in your group. This will help us figure out how many donuts and Reunion plaques to order. Email me - [email protected]

We have heard from a couple people that have viewed the photos on the website. Because these have to be low-resolution photos to work on the Inner Circle segments on the website, any photos of text don't appear clear when enlarged. This is a problem when you are trying to see numbers, such as those on the VIN labels or pages from Options booklet. Also, because of photo reproduction and computer screen variations, the colors may not be true to the actual product or photo.

If you would like to have us email you any photo at the higher resolution for viewing, just email us and we will email them to you. Be sure to be specific on which pictures you want to see - Reference Inner Circle date and photo number 1, 2, 3 or 4 - [email protected]

Got any turbo parts you are not using? Why not cash them in for parts you need with a Letter of Credit. Simply email me a list - [email protected]

Also, we are still buying dead or partially dead 1984-1987 Turbo Regals under $4,000 that are within 250 to 350 miles of our location.

JULY 29th - 31st, 2011
National Trail Raceway, Hebron, Ohio

The Buick Performance Group event will feature the Turbo Buick "step children" the T-Types and Pontiac's unclaimed child the Turbo Trans Am. The event is at National Trail Raceway in Hebron, Ohio.

They have secured Scott Kelly to attend, as well as Denny Manner, Joe Guzek, Dave Roland, Ron Yuile. Denny has also contacted Tom Wallace in hopes that he will attend. The people mentioned have also contacted other retired Buick Engineers, including Mike Doble to have them attend. There will be displays and "tech" talks, so it should be very informative. I don't think there has ever been that many Turbo G-body Engineers in one place at one time. This is one event you do not want to miss this summer!

We will be attending this major event that entire weekend set up as a vendor. So, bring us any parts you want to trade in. We do not need powermaster cores or steering wheel cores. We have also been asked to judge the original Turbo Regal class at this event. Richard Clark will be helping me as well. Along with Richard, Anthony Petridis will be assisting me as well. I think Richard has figured a method to gauge the amount of new car smell that remains in original cars!

Be sure to stop by our vendor spot at the Buick Performance Group event, as we are having a special custom-made gift done to give to Richard Clark that you will want to see. A second similar version will be available for sale for that Turbo owner that thinks they have everything for their shop or garage. It is definitely one-of-a-kind!

Information for the event can be found here -
